Software Development :: Version Control
About: arch is a modern replacement for CVS, specifically designed for the
distributed development needs of open source projects. It has uniquely
good support for development on branches (especially good merging tools),
distributed repositories (every developer can have branches in their own
repository), changeset-oriented project management (arch commits changes
to multiple files at once), and, of course, file and directory renaming.
Changes: This release adds diff3-style conflict resolution, performance
enhancements, CLI improvements, bugfixes, and a tutorial update.

[004] - Big Medium 1.2.1 (Stable)
by Josh Clark (http://freshmeat.net/users/joshclark/)
Thursday, October 2nd 2003 08:27
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
About: Big medium is an affordable, full-featured content management
system that makes it easy to manage dynamic, fast-changing Web sites. The
browser-based interface allows even the most non-technical staff to add,
edit and publish Web content without needing to learn HTML. Big Medium
empowers writers, editors, and business users to update Web sites
directly, freeing Web professionals to be more productive and creative. It
is written in Perl to run on Web servers running a UNIX operating system.
Changes: This version addresses several reported issues in Big Medium 1.2,
a major release that added RSS news feeds, support for non-Western
languages, and a new, streamlined editing interface. The fixes include
correction of display errors in some JavaScript news feeds, improved
handling of bad characters in URLs of RSS feeds, and correction of
occasional display errors on some Web site navigation elements. Text on
"utility pages" now always displays black text on a white background, and
HTML code is no longer included in email-to-a-friend plain-text messages.

by harteg (http://freshmeat.net/users/harteg/)
Thursday, October 2nd 2003 03:42
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML
About: CMSimple is a simple content management system for simple
maintainance of small commercial or private sites. It has a simple
installation, is easy to modify, and offers an unique combination of
features. It uses an HTML-file for storing the entire site, which can be
edited in your favorite editor. It has a dynamic TOC and document locator,
a WYSIWYG editor (no plugin--functions in IE and Mozilla), a search
function, link validation, image handling, and automatic backup. It is
easy to set up your own layout; just edit the template and stylesheet.
Changes: Page generation is now up to 16 times faster. Three errors in the
search function were corrected, and full headers are saved to content
files. A problem with empty headings was corrected, and strange behavior
that occurred when changing page headings was corrected. Empty headings
are now removed before saving pages. + and / characters in URIs are now
changed to _ and | respectively.

[008] - College Radio Database 0.9.2
by Ray Shaw (http://freshmeat.net/users/autechre/)
Thursday, October 2nd 2003 13:45
About: The College Radio Database is Web-based software for radio
stations. It allows you to track large collections of CDs by unique ID,
assign status, do basic searches, and more. It also tracks airplay,
allowing easy entry of spins from the CD database, as well as entry of
DJ-supplied music. Top XX overall/by genre charts can be generated between
2 dates, and you can check up on DJ attendance, number of spins versus
station spins, and more. It also includes the ability to maintain DJ
schedules in table form for multiple semesters. This software has been in
use at WMBC Radio and evolving since the year 2000.
Changes: The CD ID format can now be specified in the configuration file
using a Perl-compatible regular expression. The schedule now includes
Saturday and Sunday, as well as a hackish method of "deleting" a schedule
entry which will be replaced by something better-thought-out at a later
time. A bug in addspins.php is (hopefully) fixed; when adding a spin, if
you specified your own start time for the song and hit "enter" instead of
clicking "submit", the spin would be discarded rather than entered.

[013] - DKMS 0.40.11
by lerhaupt (http://freshmeat.net/users/lerhaupt/)
Thursday, October 2nd 2003 13:49
System :: Systems Administration
About: DKMS (Dynamic Kernel Module Support) is a framework where device
driver source can reside outside the kernel source tree so that it is very
easy to rebuild modules as you upgrade kernels. This allows Linux vendors
to provide driver drops without having to wait for new kernel releases (as
a stopgap before the code can make it back into the kernel), while also
taking out the guesswork for customers attempting to recompile modules for
new kernels. For veteran Linux users it also provides some advantages
since a separate framework for driver drops will remove kernel releases as
a blocking mechanism for distributing code.
Changes: Intrinsic redundancy in the DKMS tree is reduced by making 'dkms
add' no longer copy dkms.conf and any post script into the /var/dkms tree.
It now uses them directly from the source_tree. The options --postadd,
--postremove, --postinstall, and --postbuild have been replaced with
equivalent directives in dkms.conf. The flag --rpm_safe_upgrade has been
added. This flag should be used in all dkms-enabled RPM modules during the
ADD and REMOVE. Using this flag makes sure that in all RPM upgrade
scenarios (rpm -Uvh), dkms behaves appropriately. See the man page for
more details.

by Emil Brink (http://freshmeat.net/users/emilbrink/)
Thursday, October 2nd 2003 06:12
Desktop Environment :: File Managers
About: gentoo is a file manager written in C. It uses the GTK+ toolkit,
and the two-pane concept, somewhat inspired by DOpus. gentoo strives to be
very configurable, and also to let you do all configuration from a GUI
within the program itself. Using advanced file typing and styling systems,
gentoo determines how to display files in its listings, and also how to
act on them. The package includes a set of ~100 unique handcrafted icons,
for many different types of files.
Changes: The copying code now copies group and owner info and signals
failure a bit better. An option to auto-save the configuration on exit was
added. Directory copying was made a bit more robust, but still assumes you
know what you are doing. FAM-triggered rescans were made rate limited.
Moving the focus into one pane while the other rescans no longer causes
flickers. A couple of more minor fixes were made.

Software Development :: Version Control
About: The LibXDiff library implements basic and yet complete
functionalities to create file differences/patches to both binary and text
files. It uses memory files as file abstraction to achieve both
performance and portability. For binary files, it implements (with some
modification) the algorithm described in "File System Support for Delta
Compression" by Joshua P. MacDonald. For text files, it follows directives
described in "An O(ND) Difference Algorithm and Its Variations" by Eugene
W. Myers. Memory files used by the library are basically a collection of
buffers that store the file content.
Changes: This version improves the (size) binary differential and
implementes the textual merge3() function.

[053] - pmacct 0.5.1
by Paolo Lucente (http://freshmeat.net/users/plucente/)
Thursday, October 2nd 2003 08:45
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: pmacct is a network tool to gather IP traffic information (bytes
counter and number of packets). Aggregation of statistics is done using
simple primitives (MAC addresses, source host, destination host, ports,
and IP protocols) that can be used alone or combined together to form
complex aggregation methods. Counters are either global or historical
(aggregated and separated hourly, daily, or monthly). Data is stored in an
in-memory table or using an SQL database (currently only MySQL). The
content of these tables can be later retrieved by a client program or via
an SQL client, for simple output or export to other programs, such as
MRTG.
Changes: Support for configuration files was added. Historical recording
of counters was added, and they may be aggregated hourly, daily, or
monthly. Enhancements and some fixes were made to the MySQL plugin to
address performance constraints. SQL table locking stuff was added to
allow multiple instances of the software to run on the same machine. Code

manipulate them, send them over the wire, sniff other packets from the
wire, match answers and replies, and more. Interaction is provided by the
Python interpreter, so Python programming structures can be used (such as
variables, loops, and functions). Report modules are possible and easy to
make. It is intended to do about the same things as ttlscan, nmap, hping,
queso, p0f, xprobe, arping, arp-sk, arpspoof, firewalk, irpas, tethereal,
tcpdump, etc.
Changes: A BPF filter regression has been fixed. There is better error
handling, lazy loading of p0f/queso/nmap databases, and support for 802.11
protocols (every frame).

[065] - Squeuer 2.0.2
by BattleBlow (http://freshmeat.net/users/battleblow/)
Thursday, October 2nd 2003 13:16
Internet :: Proxy Servers
Scientific/Engineering :: Astronomy
About: Squeuer is a queueing proxy for Seti
Home. It keeps a configurable
sized queue of work units so that the client will always be able to get a
new work unit immediately upon finishing one. It queues results for
uploading should the main Seti
Home site be overloaded or down. Results
are never lost and the client is never delayed waiting to upload a result.
It can handle multiple users running the Seti
Home client on multiple
machines all connecting to Squeuer. It has been tested and found to work
on different versions of Unix, MacOS, and Windows. All it requires is a
Perl 5 interpreter.
Changes: This release fixes a bug which caused a new user who only had
existing Seti
Home clients and wanted to submit results to never have the
results sent or be able to retrieve work units.

is now needed for receiving from the local spool and sending through an
external program. The Font configuration has been moved to the new
Preferences dialog. The filtering actions are now enabled in "Actions".
The GPG/PGP Key ID is now printed on checking a signature of an existing
key. A new script has been added which converts an Evolution vCard into a
Sylpheed address book. A Simplified Chinese translation has been added.

About: TjMSN is a MSN client written in Java designed to be platform
independent. It supports file transfers, smilies, and multiple user chat
sessions. It also has extra features such as IRC-style actions and a novel
error correction message for those oh-so-regular typos.
Changes: This version moves to the MSNP9 protocol. The code to deal with
the MSN network servers has been separated out into a separate library to
aid in development of the user interface and to increase stability. A
start has been made on moving all of the emoticons to a central resource,
to improve performance and the memory footprint.

[079] - ZoneCheck 2.0.0b8
by ZoneCheck Team (http://freshmeat.net/users/zonecheck/)
Thursday, October 2nd 2003 08:47
Internet
Internet :: Name Service (DNS)
About: ZoneCheck is intended to help solve DNS misconfigurations or
inconsistencies that are usually revealed by an increase in the latency of
the application. The DNS is a critical resource for every network
application, so it is quite important to ensure that a zone or domain name
is correctly configured in the DNS.
Changes: The resolver should now handle the loss of the TCP connection
during DNS queries. The timeout for connection to a mail server has been
reduced. Checking of DNS connectivity (port 53) has been improved,
particularly for TCP. The ip6.int zone is handled the same way as the arpa
zone. New tests have been added, one for checking the coherence between
SOA of the different nameservers, and one to check for unexpected timeout
on an AAAA query. Customizing zonecheck is now done by adding a
zc-custom.rb file in its directory. Other minor bug fixes have also been
done.
