[004] - argtable 2.0
by Stewart Heitmann (http://freshmeat.net/users/sheitman/)
Monday, October 6th 2003 00:10
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Argtable is a library that allows programmers to define the command
line arguments in their program as a static array of structs. Argument
values are deposited into user-defined program variables from where they
can be accessed by the main program. Command line errors are trapped
automatically and appropriate error messages generated. The library also
provides the means for displaying the command line syntax directly from
the array of argument specifications. It uses GNU getopt and never stores
command line strings in static buffers.
Changes: This released abandoned the 1.x style support for arbitrary
option tag formats in favour of exclusive support for GNU style tags. The
new design also adds support for multiple instances of the same option
on the command line, is extensible to new types of command line
arguments, and provides better error reporting mechanisms than were
available in argtable 1.x. It is also secure against buffer overrun
attacks from maliciously long command line arguments.

[005] - ArX 1.0pre13
by wlandry (http://freshmeat.net/users/wlandry/)
Monday, October 6th 2003 20:36
Software Development :: Version Control
About: ArX is a distributed revision control system that features
distributed repositories, fancy merging, support for renaming, unobtrusive
operation, a Web interface, and revision libraries. It consists of a
collection of shell scripts and C code, and brings together many shell
utilities, SSH, HTTP, diff, and patch.
Changes: The security problem affects all past releases of ArX and larch.
The security issue arises from insecure path handling in dopatch.
Carefully constructed patches can write anywhere allowed by the user. The
C++ version in pre13 corrects those oversights, so everyone is encouraged
to upgrade. In addition, dopatch has slightly different semantics, and a
naming-convention command has been added.

Information Management :: Records Management
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
About: ByteHoard is aimed at a wide range of audiences, from people
wanting a way to quickly access files from work/ school without carrying

It's coded with a skin function, so the theme can be easily changed, and
already has many useful features, including auto compression, integrated
signup/delete, upload, download, password change, etc.
Changes: This release introduces skinning and folder support. Also
included is the option to use a custom logo. A few bugfixes and minor
feature upgrades are also included, along with folder manipulation
features. If you want to see the new features, then have a look at the
demo Web site, which is running the new version.

Communications :: Chat :: Internet Relay Chat
About: Hircules is an IRC client using GTK 2 for its tabbed user
interface, written in the functional programming language Haskell. It
features a couple of virtual channels: an "all channels" virtual channel
and an alert virtual channel to warn one of personal messages.
Changes: The input area was improved to allow easier multi-line editing
and provide a more natural user interface. Charset encoding now defaults
to UTF-8 with auto-decoding of ISO-2022-JP, and a command was added to
set and show the channel encoding. Channel tabs are now highlighted when
there is activity. Virtual channels can now be rejoined in the same way
as normal channels. Server log messages are now now date stamped.

[032] - Java Serialization to XML 2.1.2 (JSX 2)
by Brendan Macmillan (http://freshmeat.net/users/yow/)
Monday, October 6th 2003 03:38
Communications
Database
Software Development
About: Java Serialization to XML (JSX) allows you to write and read any
Java object graph as XML data with one line of code. You can verify your
data and manipulate it with standard XML tools like DOM, JDOM, and XSLT.
JSX automatically creates a file format/wire protocol for all Java
objects, so that it is always up to date as the code evolves. When you
need backward compatibility, JSX provides the evolution techniques of Java
Object Serialization, and you can also modify the XML directly. Unlike
databinders, such as JAXB and Castor, no explicit mapping is required, and
JSX works for all objects.
Changes: A bug in the 30 day validation logic that was cutting short the
trial period for some users was fixed.

by Lotzi Boloni (http://freshmeat.net/users/boloni/)
Monday, October 6th 2003 10:31
Information Management :: Document Repositories
Information Management :: Metadata/Semantic Models
About: Kraken is an application for managing knowledge objects, which can
be documents, remote or locally cached Web pages, personal information,
todo list items, appointments, and so on. It is especially useful for
researchers or students to manage their information. Users can annotate
these knowledge objects with metadata, perform complex queries, and
present the results as HTML pages. Kraken uses RDF as its native format,
allowing its data to be easily read by external applications.
Changes: This is the last release of the 2.0 series, and (mostly)
completes Kraken as a single user knowledge editing and querying tool. The
currently supported metadata includes BibTeX bibliography data, notes, and
opinion/ranking. The querying and Web page generation was significantly

[043] - Luau 0.1.0
by David Eklund (http://freshmeat.net/users/auknight/)
Monday, October 6th 2003 10:36
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Installation/Setup
System :: Software Distribution
About: Luau provides a backbone for disseminating software updates
throughout a software project's userbase. It differs from other
"automatic update" solutions (eg. apt, Red Hat Network) in that it works
on a decentralized basis - developers provide an "updates" file
describing all currently available updates which is then downloaded and
interpreted by the client. It is also more flexible in that individual
developers can distribute not only software updates but messages
throughout the userbase, which can be used to inform users of important
security updates, new software roadmaps, or anything else the developer
thinks is important for users of the software package. Also provided is
an X front-end to the Luau database (called 'luau-x') and a console based
front-end (called 'luau') that allow the user to check for and download
or install updates for all supported software.
Changes: This release supports all major functions. Notably, package
installation and program removal are now supported. Also, a major
segmentation fault has been fixed, and there have been some other minor
bugfixes and feature enhancements.

[062] - OSSP fsl 1.3.0
by Ralf S. Engelschall (http://freshmeat.net/users/rse/)
Monday, October 6th 2003 12:00
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Logging
About: OSSP fsl offers the syslog API otherwise provided by libc. Instead
of writing to the syslogd process, it uses the powerful OSSP l2 logging
capabilities. It is a drop-in link-time replacement which enables any
syslog consumer to take advantage of OSSP l2 by just linking this library
in before libc. The program is intended to apply OSSP l2 functionality to
existing syslog-based third-party programs without the requirement to
change the source code of the program.
Changes: This release integrates OSSP l2 0.9.4 and in this way provides a
new "monitor" option in the "file" channel.

[063] - OSSP l2 0.9.4
by Ralf S. Engelschall (http://freshmeat.net/users/rse/)
Monday, October 6th 2003 11:59
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Logging
About: OSSP l2 is a C library providing a very flexible and sophisticated
Unix logging facility. It is based on the model of arbitrary number of
channels, stacked together in a top-down data flow tree structure with
filtering channels in internal nodes and output channels on the leave
nodes. Channel trees can be either constructed manually through
lower-level API functions or all at once with a single API function
controlled by a compact syntactical description of the channel tree. For
generating log messages, a printf-style formatting engine is provided
which can be extended through callback functions. The data flow inside the
channel tree is controlled by logging message severity levels which are
assigned to each individual channel.
Changes: This release changes the "jitter" option in the "file" channel
from "flag" to "count" and adds a new "monitor" option to the "file"
channel.

[071] - Ragel State Machine Compiler 2.2
by Adrian Thurston (http://freshmeat.net/users/age/)
Monday, October 6th 2003 12:02
Software Development :: Code Generators
About: Ragel compiles finite state machines from regular languages into
runnable C code. It allows you to embed actions at any point in your
regular language and to control the non-determinism in the resulting
machines. It understands concatenation, union (the "or" operator), kleene
star, subtraction, and intersection, as well as some helpers like "!", "?"
and "+". Ragel's finite state machines are closed under all of its
operators. This property allows for arbitrary regular lanuages to be
described. It can be used to create a parser for any language that is
regular.
Changes: Repetition operators {n}, {,n}, {n,}, and {n,m} in the style of
grep have been added. A bug in the action table that occasionally caused
segfaults in machines with many actions has been fixed.

System :: Archiving
System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Compression
About: Star is a very fast, POSIX-compliant tar archiver. It reads and
writes POSIX compliant tar archives as well as non-POSIX GNU tar archives.
Star is the first free POSIX.1-2001 compliant tar implementation. It saves
many files together into a single tape or disk archive, and can restore
individual files from the archive. It includes command line interfaces for
the "tar", "Sun-Tar", "cpio", "pax" and "gnutar" cmdline syntax. It
includes a FIFO for speed, a pattern matcher, multi-volume support, the
ability to archive sparse files and ACLs, the ability to archive extended
file flags, automatic archive format detection, automatic byte order
recognition, automatic archive compression/decompression, remote archives,
and special features that allow star to be used for full and incremental
backups. It includes the only known platform independent "rmt" server
program that hides Linux incompatibilities. The "rmt" server from the star
package implements all Sun/GNU/Schily/BSD enhancements and allows any
"rmt" client from any OS to contact any OS as server.
Changes: A POSIX.1-2001 based volume header system was added with many
SCHILY.volhdr.* tags, which will be used with future versions of star to
verify multi-volume media and incremental dumps. Archive type name

[077] - Shuriken 1.4
by Deraj (http://freshmeat.net/users/Deraj/)
Monday, October 6th 2003 20:35
System :: Shells
About: Shuriken is an XML-based tool for Linux system administrators to
set up spans of time when the system should be up. Using the RTC daily
alarm (requires BIOS, hardware, Linux support), the system will
automatically power-on (if it is off) for these intervals. Automatic
power-off is supported, but this feature is not recommended if users
intend to log in to the system and not have it shut down on them.
Changes: This version fixes an error in the calculation of the system's
real time clock driver's time zone that would cause the system to not
power-on at the appropriate time. Additionally, uptabrtc now sets the RTC

[081] - Supybot 0.73.0
by jemfinch (http://freshmeat.net/users/jemfinch/)
Monday, October 6th 2003 00:12
Communications :: Chat :: Internet Relay Chat
About: Supybot is a clearly-written Python IRC framework and bot, intended
to be both easily extensible and very flexible. Several modules are
included by default. Numerous plugins are already written, including
Google, Factoids, RSS, Quotes, and URLSnarfer. Plugins and their commands
achieve greater utility via command nesting, something that no other IRC
bot does. The user database is based on "capabilities" rather than obscure
flags or arbitrary numeric "userlevels", giving the bot flexibility and
fine-grained control (think ACLs vs. standard *nix permissions).
Developing your own additions to the bot is simple with the base classes
provided; writing a new command for the bot is as simple as writing a
function. Unlike many other IRC frameworks, this simplicity is achieved at
no cost to generality, which lets new programmers and old programmers
alike feel at home in the framework.
Changes: Numerous bugfixes were made and new plugins were added,
including News, Python, and Status. The new commands added included
convert, units, cmdstats, and commands. Refinements were made to the
consistency of the user interface. Search functions now all default to
glob searching, with exact string searching and regular expression
searching as options. Tests no longer fail on Windows or on systems
without SQLite installed.

written in the C language. YSM is based on the last ICQ protocol version,
v7/8.
Changes: Console fixes and enhancements were made, and readline getline
and ysmline are now used. Help on commands was extended. A new ysm.dev
file was added for compiling under Win32 with gcc. Proxies support was
fixed. The Automatic AFK mode was removed. Fixes were made to charset
convertion. Several translations were updated and added. Many other

[097] - ZEngine 0.8.5

Games/Entertainment
About: ZEngine is a cross-platform 2D API which uses a combination of
OpenGL and SDL to provide speed and functionality as well as portability.
The library can be used on any platform SDL supports, but for full
functionality requires OpenGL and several SDL extension libraries. A
class-based design allows the easy management of resources and makes
learning the API easy, allowing more time to be spent on the development
of the actual game than learning of various APIs. Current development
platforms are Windows and Linux, but ZEngine is reported to work on
similar operating systems (like OSX), and help is available for anyone
porting to any platform.
Changes: To help Windows developers that may be hurt by the removal of
VC6, Dev-C++ project files have been added. On Linux, the build system has
been improved. The SDL-only backend option has returned. Two new ZImage
features were added: the ability to draw with shading options and the
ability to specify a clipping rectangle. ZImage, ZSound, and ZFont are now
able to load from a zip archive via the included zlib library. Several
other features have been added, and some small bugs have been fixed.
