  by Gerbier Eric (http://freshmeat.net/users/gerbier/)
  Tuesday, October 7th 2003 08:22

Security
System :: Systems Administration

About: afick is another file integrity checker, designed to be fast and
fully portable between Unix and Windows platforms. It works by first
creating a database that represents a snapshot of the most essential parts
of your computer system. You can then run the script to discover all
modifications made since the snapshot was taken (i.e. files added,
changed, or removed). The configuration syntax is very close to that of
aide or tripwire, and a graphical interface is provided.

Changes: The result output is now split into a summary part, followed by a
detailed part. The graphical interface was improved, and some bugs were
fixed.

About: Annif is a minimalistic Web-based birthday (calendar) monitoring
tool. Users can add and remove birthday dates and ask to be notified of
birthdays. No other usual calendar features will ever be included. It has
multi-lingual support, and currently has translations for English and
French.

Changes: The basic features are implemented, but all the user-related
functions (login/logout/notification) have not been implemented. Annif is
perfectly usable as it is, but if you want access control, you have to use
an external method, such as with Apache .htaccess files.

  Tuesday, October 7th 2003 21:31

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML

About: Aranha is a piece of software written to allow Web applications to
be written more cleanly and more easily. It is a Local FastCGI Responder,
although work is in progress to allow it to work as a FastCGI Authoriser
and a FastCGI Filter. It is based on the programming language Lua, and
contains many extensions to enable easy Web site development and
maintenance.

Changes: In this version, many new list manipulation functions have been
added, including sort(), reverse(), and various map() functions. The
split() was refined, and join() added. A new iterator function was added
to only iterate across table values. Bugfixes to the DBI interface now
allow error messages through to the Lua layer.

[007] - bash programmable completion 20031007 (Stable)
  by Ian Macdonald (http://freshmeat.net/users/ianmacd/)
  Tuesday, October 7th 2003 02:29

System :: Shells
System :: Systems Administration
Utilities

About: Since v2.04, bash has allowed you to intelligently program and
extend its standard completion behavior to achieve complex command lines
with just a few keystrokes. Imagine typing ssh [Tab] and being able to
complete on hosts from your ~/.ssh/known_hosts files. Or typing man 3 str
[Tab] and getting a list of all string handling functions in the UNIX
manual. mount system: [Tab] would complete on all exported file-systems
from the host called system, while make [Tab] would complete on all
targets in Makefile. This project was conceived to produce programmable
completion routines for the most common Linux/UNIX commands, reducing the
amount of typing sysadmins and programmers need to do on a daily basis.

Changes: Compatibility fixes have been made for the next major release of
bash, 3.x. yum(8) and yum-arch(8) completion was added and some fixes
were made to iptables and FreeS/WAN completion.

[010] - Cluster Installation Finishing Scripts 3.0
  by Joe Landman (http://freshmeat.net/users/landman/)
  Tuesday, October 7th 2003 13:20

Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.

About: The Finishing Scripts for Cluster Installations handle specific
post-installation configuration that might not be convienent nor possible
using existing cluster installation methods. The usual installation
process is used to build a reasonably configured node, and the system then
reboots into normal mode, achieves network visibility, and executes the
finishing script. The finishing script handles all of the finer details of
installing packaged or non-packaged software, tweaking installation,
setting host/net specific parameters/files, etc. It is controlled via a
single, easily modified script.

Changes: Significant changes, as RPMs are not directly distributed. An
environment that greatly simplifies the building and customization of the
RPMs has been created. This allows you to completely customize the server
host, the mount point, and the network and netmask for the server, and
compute node RPMs. The build script handles all the details of building
the RPMs, after asking you 4 questions. The defaults are reasonable for
cluster distributions such as ROCKS, though these scripts should work on
any RPM-based distribution used for clusters.

Communications :: Email :: Filters
Internet
Text Processing :: Filters

About: DSPAM is a server-side anti-spam agent for Unix email servers. It
masquerades as the email server's local delivery agent and effectively
filters spam using a combination of de-obfuscation techniques, token
chains, and Bayesian analysis. The result is an administratively
maintenance-free, self-learning anti-spam tool. This approach, applied to
a mature corpus of email, has the potential to yield a 99.75% success rate
with less than a 0.01% chance of false positives.

Changes: An Oracle storage driver has been added. The Berkeley libdb
drivers have been enhanced to support ENV locking and automatic recovery.
Delivery time is no longer ignored in the calculation. Program name
transformation is now supported. dspam_ngstats, the global stats tool, has
been modified to allow a unique identifier to be specified for dynamic
hosts. Enhancements to the corpus feeding tool have been made. Several
small bugfixes have been made, including a FreeBSD compile-time bug,
handling of single-part Base64-encoded messages, and MySQL storage driver
fixes.

Database :: Front-Ends
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: User Interfaces

About: ERW (Entities and Relationships on the Web) is an innovative system
for handling complex databases using a Web browser. It uses the most
recent standards endorsed by the W3C to offer to the user a sophisticated
environment, similar to a dedicated client. Moreover, the user interface
is generated in a completely automatic way starting from a conceptual
description of the database by means of an XML-based description language
for entity-relationship schemata. From the same description, you can also
automatically obtain diagrams and documentation. ERW can be used for
content management, in particular when the data is structured along
complex relations.

Changes: All major features that were originally planned have been
implemented. In particular, highly customizable forms, dozens of bug
fixes, a complete reorganization of the code, and much more testing was
done. Beware that there are a few important incompatibilities with pre-1.0
versions, which can be easily fixed if you read the README/CHANGES files.

Internet :: Name Service (DNS)
Software Development :: Libraries

About: GNU Libidn is an implementation of the Stringprep, Punycode, and
IDNA specifications defined by the IETF Internationalized Domain Names
(IDN) working group. It is used to prepare internationalized strings (such
as domain name labels, usernames, and passwords) in order to increase the
likelihood that string input and string comparison work in ways that make
sense for typical users throughout the world. The library contains a
generic Stringprep implementation that does Unicode 3.2 NFKC
normalization, mapping and prohibition of characters, and bidirectional
character handling. Profiles for iSCSI, Kerberos 5, Nameprep, SASL, and
XMPP are included. Punycode and ASCII Compatible Encoding (ACE) via IDNA
are supported.

Changes: This version adds a "trace" alias for SASL ANONYMOUS stringprep
profile, and a "const" qualifier on stringprep_profile().

About: PBButtons is a daemon to handle special hardware on the Apple
iBook/PowerBook/TiBook. It controls the display brightness, the sound
volume, mutes the sound, changes the trackpad mode, puts the machine to
sleep, or ejects the CDROM on command. It also provides basic power
management features. An included client gives the user visual feedback
about all actions with nice little popup windows.

Changes: The daemonise code has been reworked. The PID of thedaemon will
now be written to /var/run/. The PID file can be defined on the command
line. The code to eject a CD has been reworked. The external program
'eject' isn't necessary anymore. There is a new Debian start script.

[063] - Performance Co-Pilot 2.3.2-4
  by Mark Goodwin (http://freshmeat.net/users/markgw/)
  Tuesday, October 7th 2003 02:25

Internet :: Log Analysis
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Performance Co-Pilot (PCP) is a framework and set of services for
supporting system-level performance monitoring and performance management.
It provides a unifying abstraction for all of the interesting performance
data in a system, and allows client applications to easily retrieve and
process any subset of that data using a single API. A client-server
architecture allows multiple clients to monitor the same host, and a
single client to monitor multiple hosts. Archive logging and replay are
integrated so that a client application can use the same API to process
real-time data from a host or historical data from an archive.

Changes: This version features some minor bugfixes and some new metrics
covering kernel memory usage and VFS statistics.

[065] - PhpLabware 0.30
  by Nico Stuurman (http://freshmeat.net/users/nicost/)
  Tuesday, October 7th 2003 02:26

Database :: Front-Ends
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics

About: PhpLabware is a database system with features similar to Filemaker
and Access, but is completely Web-based. Relational databases can be
defined through the Web interface and extended with PHP plugin code. User
and group access is regulated at the record level. It was written by and
for life sciences research scientists, but should be generally useful as a
Web-based front end to SQL databases.

Changes: This release adds the ability to generate reports from the
results of database searches. The reports are based on user-definable
templates. Most of the problems when working with linked databases in
earlier releases have been removed. The data import and export functions
as well as the user interface were improved. Major speed increases make
it now feasible to work with large datasets.

[072] - Quick-Join 0.5.2
  by Thomas Mailund (http://freshmeat.net/users/mailund_birc/)
  Tuesday, October 7th 2003 09:59

Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics

About: Quick-Join implements a heuristic for speeding up neighbour
joining, making neighbour joining feasible for large sets of taxa. The
inferred tree is identical to the tree inferred by the traditional
neighbour joining method, but the heuristic will (potentially) construct
the tree significantly faster.

Changes: This release corrects a serious bug in the distance matrix
calculation. When the input was given in the form of a multiple alignment,
with two sequences completely unrelated, the calculation gave them a
pair-wise distance of plus infinity. With this distance, the resulting
tree is completely bogus. The current release gives them a distance of
twice the observed (real) distance found in the alignment.

About: The SMS Server Tools were made to send and receive SMS from one or
many GSM modems. They include a send/receive daemon and some sample
scripts to build an SMS email gateway and for logging into an SQL

sends them. It puts all received SMS in an incoming spool directory, and
can call any external program for incoming or outgoing notification.

[080] - Split-Dist 0.1.2
  by Thomas Mailund (http://freshmeat.net/users/mailund_birc/)
  Tuesday, October 7th 2003 13:22

Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics

About: Split-Dist calculates the number of splits (edges) that differs for
two trees. When you construct phylogenetic trees using slightly different
methods, or from slightly different input data, the trees will not
agreecompletely on the topology. When they differ, it is interesting to
know where they differ, i.e. which edges can be found in both trees and
which cannot.

Changes: The two trees being compared were not necessarily being traversed
starting in the same root node. Consequently, an edge with one label in
the first tree would not necessarily correspond to the edge with the same
label in the second tree. This has now been fixed.

  Tuesday, October 7th 2003 09:57

Information Management
Information Management :: Workflow Frameworks

About: Tidal Wave is a recursive project-tracking Web application. It can
be used by organizations to keep entire teams on time and on target for
getting multiple projects done. A single project can own sub- projects
that are sorted by either due date or priority (that choice is easily
configurable), and each sub-project can be owned by an entirely different
person. If project A relies on project B, that is clearly visible with
the recursive project tree view. A manager can clearly see that what
employee A is doing is holding up employee B's work.

Changes: Setup will now create the theme table correctly. The typo in the
SQL code has been resolved. When a new project is added, the owner of the
project will be notified via email. When a project is changed, the owner
and submitter will be notified of the change via email.

[088] - Verlof 0.4.6
  by martin moene (http://freshmeat.net/users/mjmoene/)
  Tuesday, October 7th 2003 08:25

Office/Business :: Groupware

About: Verlof is a Web application for registering and viewing leave
information. It records hours of leave rights and hours of leave within
categories like normal leave, special leave, reduced working-hours (ADV),
and the begin and end dates for the leave's period. The few rules imposed
on the entries are mainly sanity checks like "begin date is in the
weekend". The act of entering a new leave entry sends an email to the
group manager and a copy to the employee. The advantages of this
electronic version over the paper version are: there is a single
information location (no employee-card and mother-card discrepancies),
questionable entries immediately draw the manager's attention (with
email), and various up-to-date views of the leave history are available
(total, year, and list). Verlof is a Dutch-only application and a little
specific to Leiden University.

Changes: The day-coloring algorithm of the year view was improved. It now
correctly handles leave entries that have corrections, and it uses the
category that has the most hours on each day. It is now necessary to
specify the category when registering leave, since there is no default
anymore.
