[001] - 1060 NetKernel 2.0.7
  by Peter Rodgers (http://freshmeat.net/users/1060/)
  Wednesday, October 8th 2003 03:11

Internet
System :: Operating System

About: 1060 NetKernel is a Java-based virtual Internet OS with an XML
runtime. It offers a microkernel modular component architecture and
integrates a comprehensive set of XML technologies. It features an XML
runtime, XML pipeline processes with loops and exception handling,
virtualized modular URI address spaces, and a dependency-based cache.

Changes: This version adds several new features including a second XML
runtime and Servlet support. Servlet support enables NetKernel processes
to be executed within a Servlet engine/App server. A New XML Resource
Linker (XRL) provides an 'XML-pull' runtime with forward and reverse
link translation and XML template traversal. Enhancements include DOS
throttle protection which removes memory overflow possibility during
excessive loading. Also enhanced is the URI resolver trace tool.

Internet
Utilities

About: Advanced Web Ranking is a tool that will help you check your Web
site position on all major search engines. It saves you hours of tedious
work while monitoring your Web site's search engine position. It generates
tabular and graphical reports that will help you check not just the
position of your Web site, but the position of your competitors' Web sites
as well.

Changes: The problem with exporting the reports is now fixed. Keywords and
URLs can now be imported/exported from/to a flat file. Keywords and URLs
can now be modified after they are added to the project. You can now
duplicate project feature. Access through a proxy server with
authentication is implemented. A reset project feature and the ability to
change the location of the data folder are added. The reports can now be
sent to one or more email addresses. The reports can now be saved into a

Communications :: Email
Database :: Front-Ends
Information Management

About: Bugzero is an all-in-one product for software bug tracking, defect
issue incident tracking, trouble ticketing, help desk support, and
customer email management. It is simple to use and avoids complexity by
making the tasks or projects separate and independent. It is platform and
database system independent (based on Java). It supports multiple
projects, group and field level access control, automatic bug assignment,
file attachment, email notification, inbound email management, metric
reports, and workflow. It also features advanced search capability, a
comprehensive bug audit trail, CVS version control integration, self
registration to public projects, and an easy to use system administration
tool for project configuration and user account management.

Changes: This release added three convenient links ("Assign to me", "Quick
close", and "Delete") onto the Home, query result, and Edit pages. With
public projects, the user's group is now changed to "guest" if the user is
not explicitly assigned to the project. Workflow is now enforced only when
the state is changed, and a state is now allowed to remain unchanged. A
bug introduced by the new query for MySQL databases was fixed.

[011] - devlabel 0.43.16
  by lerhaupt (http://freshmeat.net/users/lerhaupt/)
  Wednesday, October 8th 2003 16:46

System :: Filesystems
Utilities

About: Devlabel is a program which dynamically creates symbolic links to
disk/partition names. It uses the disk's and/or partition's unique
identifiers to keep the symlink pointed to the correct location even if
the underlying partition's name has changed. So, regardless of whether
/dev/sdb6 becomes /dev/sdc6, devlabel figures this all out and points the
symlink to the correct data.

Changes: A device ignore list has been created in /var/lib/
devlabel/ignore_list such that devlabel can keep track of devices it
shouldn't query for IDs, since it knows they won't return IDs and likely
will only spew errors to the screen instead. The ignore_list is cleared
every time devlabel is restarted, or after /proc/partitions has changed
since the last time it has run. The previous version had some bugs, and
these changes resolve them. The benefit of all of this is far fewer read
capacity error messages to the console.

[016] - EmPy 3.2

  Wednesday, October 8th 2003 01:07

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Interpreters
Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules

About: EmPy is a system for embedding Python expressions and statements in
template text. It takes an EmPy source file, processes it, and produces
output. This is accomplished via expansions, which are special signals to
the EmPy system and are set off by a special prefix (by default the at
sign, ''). It can expand arbitrary Python expressions and statements in
this way, as well as a variety of special forms. Textual data not
explicitly delimited in this way is sent unaffected to the output,
allowing Python to be used in effect as a markup language. Also supported
are callbacks via hooks, recording and playback via diversions, and
dynamic, chainable filters. The system is highly configurable via command
line options and embedded commands.

Changes: This version reengineers the hooks support to use hook
instances, adds a -v/--verbose option, adds a --relative- path option,
reverses the PEP 317 style, and modifies Unicode support to give less
confusing errors in the case of unknown encodings and error handlers.

About: iptables is built on top of netfilter: the new packet alteration
framework for Linux 2.4. It is an enhancement on ipchains, and is used to
control packet filtering, Network Address Translation (masquerading,
portforwarding, transparent proxying), and special effects.

Changes: Memory leaks were fixed in ip(6)tables-save/restore. The printout
of odd length netmasks was fixed in ip6tables. iptables-save now works
properly with condition match, fuzzy match, (inverted) MAC match, the LOG
target, and mport match. Invalid port ranges are now checked for by
ip6tables UDP match. The ipq_id_t definition in libipq was fixed on "real"
64bit/64bit architectures. Endianness bugs related to ipv6_prefix_length
in libip6tc were fixed.

[030] - Karchiver 3.0.6 (KDE 3)
  by EC (http://freshmeat.net/users/coquelle/)
  Wednesday, October 8th 2003 06:04

Desktop Environment :: K Desktop Environment (KDE)
Utilities

About: kArchiver is a KDE utility made to ease working with compressed
files. With kArchiver, you can create tar.gz, tar.bz2, .zip, and other
files, and you can add, remove, or view one or more files with a
multiselection window. Its interface merges with konqueror, allowing you
to view and extract all of your archives within the file manager.
Right-clicking on an archive allows you to extract archives in background.
You can also convert files between .tar.gz and .tar.bz2. It also provides
an automatic splitter/unsplitter to fit a file onto a set of floppies, and
wizards that will help you step by step to compile and install software
through kArchiver's interface.

Changes: This is a usability, new features, and bugfixes release. The
usability changes concern the way an archive is created or converted, the
"add files" dialog, and some wizards. All the dialogs now use layouts to
help the translators' job. One nice new feature is the ability to set, by
the commandline or within the preferences menu, the default compressor to
use when right-clicking a file in Konqueror. It's now possible to create
or extract any kind of archive with the commandline (see karchiver
--help). The bugfixes concern a crash and a pb in the conversion tool.

About: This project is a filter that classifies packets based on
application (or layer 7) data. This means that it is able to classify
packets as HTTP, FTP, Gnucleus, etc., regardless of what port the services
are run on. It complements existing filters that classify based on route,
port numbers, and so on in the existing Linux QoS infrastructure.

Changes: This release adds eDonkey2000 support. It also includes
experimental support for matching file types (currently supported are
HTML, Ogg, PDF, Perl, Postscript, RPM, RTF, and tar) and matching worms
(Code Red and Nimda are currently supported).

About: LinkGrammar-WN is a lexicon expansion for the Link Grammar Parser.
The Link Grammar Parser is a syntactic parser of the English language
that is capable of handling a wide variety of syntactic constructions
and is considered quite robust. The LinkGrammar-WN project aims to import
lexical information from WordNet in an effort to increase the size of
the LGP lexicon. This project is of interest to anyone interested in NLP
(natural language parsing) of English text.

Changes: This initial release uses an automated word sense scoring
algorithm to categorize WordNet words into the appropriate Link Grammar
Parser dictionary files, providing 14,392 noun word forms not found in the
original LGP lexicon, increasing the lexicon size by roughly 25%, and
greatly increasing vocabulary recognition when performing NLP (natural
language parsing) of English text.

  Wednesday, October 8th 2003 16:41

System :: Networking
System :: Systems Administration

About: Linux Bandwidth Arbitrator allows beginning-to-advanced network
administrators to control bandwidth. It is designed to be completely
turn-key in its default configuration. You just plug it into your network
trunk, and it self configures and immediately starts slowing "bandwidth
hogs". It can be configured to target specific applications such as Kazaa,
IMAP, and POP. It also comes with denial of service protection and a
special reservation system for voice and video traffic QOS.

Changes: This release of the user guide explains the commercial QOS
features in the Arbiqos that allow users to set priority bandwidth by
type of traffic. For example, you can give SIP, H323, or Net2phone
traffic priority over other traffic on your network. It also has been
updated with details on how to auto reboot on system crash to insure
your Arbitrator system stays up 7X24. Finally, it explains the
differences between the Arbiqos GPL and commercial versions.

About: MIMEDefang is a flexible MIME email scanner designed to protect
Windows clients from viruses. However, it can do many other kinds of mail
processing, such as replacing parts of messages with URLs, adding
boilerplate disclaimers, and so on. It can alter or delete various parts
of a MIME message according to a very flexible configuration file. It can
also bounce messages with unacceptable attachments. MIMEDefang works with
Sendmail 8.11/8.12's new "Milter" API, which makes it more flexible and
efficient than procmail-based approaches.

Changes: An internal constant was increased so that MIMEDefang can accept
the much more verbose reports produced by SpamAssassin 2.60. If a virus is
detected, action_notify_sender is disabled. This is done to avoid annoying
innocent third parties with useless virus notification messages.

[059] - SURVIVOR 0.9.3
  by Benn Oshrin (http://freshmeat.net/users/bennos/)
  Wednesday, October 8th 2003 06:07

System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: SURVIVOR is yet another systems monitor. It consists of a
POSIX-thread based scheduler written in C++ running arbitrary checks in a
flexible, heterogeneous, bureaucratic, and convoluted environment. It
maintains proper state, history, sanity, and attitude, and allows
interaction via Web, command, and two-way messaging interfaces.

Changes: This release overhauls the dependency infrastructure, adding
dependencies for fixes and making Type II dependencies useful. In addition
to the usual array of bugfixes and new modules, the dependency on sendmail
has been removed, and changes have been made to reduce duplication in
Alert Plan definitions. Additionally, a small meta-monitor has been added
as a utility, useful to monitor the system from another location.

Scientific/Engineering

About: Frink is a calculating tool and programming language designed to
help you in the real world. It tracks units of measurement throughout all
calculations and ensures that answers are correct. It converts between
systems of measurement and has a huge library of physical data. It handles
conversions between time zones, currencies, and historical values of the
U.S. dollar and the British pound, translates between several languages,
does date/time math, and more.

Changes: This release adds a new operator for support of object- oriented
programming. It improves the lexing of whitespace to allow more flexible
interleaved comments, and adds Unicode synonyms for several operators.
The "sun.frink" astronomical library was enhanced to calculate times
when the moon or sun crossed a certain altitude or azimuth with
refraction corrections for temperature and pressure.

[067] - ulogd 1.02
  by Harald Welte (http://freshmeat.net/users/laf0rge/)
  Wednesday, October 8th 2003 20:42

System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: The Userspace Logging Daemon (ulogd) is a flexible framework for
extensive logging of packets on a firewall machine. ulogd uses the ULOG
target of iptables/netfilter, the packet filtering framework of Linux 2.4.
It supports binary plugins for adding packet interpreters and
output-targets (e.g., for logging into databases, user-defined filetypes,
etc.).

Changes: The printout of date in ulogd_LOCALTIME.c was fixed. The $(LD)
macro is used in order to provide cross-compiling/linking support. An
'rmem' configuration key was added to set the netlink socket rmem
buffsize. Kernel header files are no longer used for IP/TCP header
definitions. Various cosmetic cleanups were made to compile cleanly with
-Wall. mysql_init() is now called before mysql_real_connect. LOGEMU no
longer reads the system time, since ulogd_LOCAL.so does this already.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players :: MP3

About: xmms-crossfade is an output plugin for XMMS. Its main feature is
automatic crossfading. It also removes the gaps between tracks, to play
whole MP3 albums without any audible interruption. xmms-crossfade supports
OSS via a builtin driver, and any other platform by using existing output
plugins.

Changes: A bug in the built-in OSS driver which could cause a complete
stop of playback under heavy system load has been fixed. The behaviour
when quitting XMMS while a song is being played has changed: the
fade-on-stop crossfade is now applied before exiting.

About: Yed is a C software library made of modules (objects) instanceable
according to the main paradigms of Object Oriented Programming:
incapsulation and data hiding.

Changes: A new object, YedXml, was introduced to allow developers to load
valid XML files into memory and scan them. A bug in the Makefile was
cleared: it didn't create the right symbolic link to the Yed library name
when the library target path (the exec_prefix configure parameter) was
specified in the form of "./....".
