  Monday, October 13th 2003 10:31

System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: bandwidthd tracks usage of TCP/IP network subnets and builds HTML
files with graphs to display network utilization. Charts are built by
individual IP. It color codes HTTP, TCP,UDP, ICMP, VPN, and P2P traffic.
Unlike MRTG, it tracks each individual IP address, not the status of any
particular link. It is easy to install, low overhead, and has few
dependencies.

Changes: This release adds an alternating light blue background to the
stats table and centered column headers, date/time to the top of the HTML
output, and FTP tracking based on the "ftp-data" port number. It fixes the
DLT_LINUX_SLL undefined compile bug by wrapping it in an #ifdef and
modifies the stat table so everything lines up and is easy to read at low
resolutions.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development
Software Development :: Bug Tracking

About: Codestriker is a Perl CGI script that is used for performing code
reviews in a collaborative fashion, as opposed to using patches sent in
unstructured emails. Authors create code review topics, and the nominated
reviewers are automatically notified by email. Reviewers can view the
proposed diff in colored-diff mode, and can also view the original and new
files that comprise the review in their entirety when Codestriker is
linked with CVS or Subversion. Comments are made on a per-line basis, and
comments submitted by the other reviewers can be viewed as they are
created. Emails are sent to the appropriate parties when comments are
created. The author is free to submit comments against the review
comments. The end result is a structured set of review comments instead of
a pile of unstructured emails. Codestriker also features the ability to
search over existing topics in a variety of ways.

Changes: The topic view page was modified for non-diff topics and the
list comments page was modified to allow filtering by user or comment
state and to show the context text associated with each comment. An
$allow_comment_email option that controls if an email is sent for each
comment was added, and the notion of soft and hard topic text length
limits was introduced. Information from diffs can be used with the
--show-c-function. A new script for automating the submission of code
review topics was added along with a new view topic option for newline
wrapping.

About: Crafty Syntax Live Help is a live help support chat system that
allows the operators of Web sites to monitor their visitors as they are
browsing the site and proactively open a chat session with them. It can
use either a MySQL database or a text-based database and features chat
notification, notifications when the user is typing a message, multiple
chat sessions, referer tracking, page view tracking, and multiple
operators.

Changes: Some missing files were added for the JavaScript that controls
the floating menus in the user chats. A problem where auto-invite based
on visits was inviting regardless of the number of pages visited was
corrected. Refresh and Clear options were added to the floating
navigation. The chat frame was made bigger in the admin side and 'no

Internet

About: ctrlproxy is an IRC server with multiserver support. It runs as a
daemon and connects to a number of IRC servers, then allows you to connect
from a workstation and work as the user that is logged in to the IRC
server. After you disconnect, it maintains the connection to the server.
It acts like any normal IRC server, so you can use any IRC client to
connect to it. It supports multiple client connections to one IRC server
(under the same nick), allowing you to connect to IRC using your IRC nick,
even while you have an IRC session open somewhere else. It supports
logging (in the same format as the irssi IRC client), password
authentication, and ctcp (in case no clients are connected).

Changes: Flood protection, nickserv auto-identification, support for
unloading modules, and a custom logging module have been added. Many bugs
have been fixed, especially some regarding replication and a lot of crash
bugs.

Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: IMAP

About: The DBMAIL package replaces the normal UNIX mailing system. All
email and user data is stored in a database. You can create an unlimited
number of email accounts, which can be checked using the POP3 or IMAP
protocol. Users can maintain their own set of email addresses. It is more
scalable, more secure, and faster than traditional mail systems. DBMAIL
has storage drivers for PostgreSQL and MySQL, and it has authentication
drivers for PostgreSQL, MySQL, and LDAP.

Changes: A lot of small bugfixes were made. A big speed improvement and an
important security fix were made for the pop3d. This release is very
stable, and is running on sites with over 80,000 mail users. A 2.0 branch
was started, which includes a lot of speed improvements for the imapd and

Text Processing :: Filters

About: DSPAM is a server-side anti-spam agent for Unix email servers. It
masquerades as the email server's local delivery agent and effectively
filters spam using a combination of de-obfuscation techniques, token
chains, and Bayesian analysis. The result is an administratively
maintenance-free, self-learning anti-spam tool. This approach, applied to
a mature corpus of email, has yielded real-world success rates of up to
99.9% accuracy with less than a 0.01% chance of false positives.

Changes: A new inoculation group has been added, enabling groups of users
to inoculate each other against new spam messages they report. The libdb
drivers have been enhanced with automatic deadlock detection, and an
automatic detection tool (for large scale installations) has been added. A
bug in algorithm initialization has been fixed, making some algorithms as
accurate as they are supposed to be. The token sorting algorithm has been
enhanced to break ties based on the frequency of tokens within the
message. A few miscellaneous bugs have also been repaired.

  Monday, October 13th 2003 06:10

System :: Networking
System :: Systems Administration

About: Linux Bandwidth Arbitrator allows beginning-to-advanced network
administrators to control bandwidth. It is designed to be completely
turn-key in its default configuration. You just plug it into your network
trunk, and it self configures and immediately starts slowing "bandwidth
hogs". It can be configured to target specific applications such as Kazaa,
IMAP, and POP. It also comes with denial of service protection and a
special reservation system for voice and video traffic QOS.

Changes: Uplink and downlink limits were added for MAC address shaping, so
now you can shape incoming and outgoing traffic separately for MAC
addresses. Several holes in the kernel code that were the likely cause of
kernel panics that a small fraction of users had experienced in 6.2 were
fixed. The documentation was updated and tested for reliability, so
machines can be configured to fully recover from power down or panic. A
link to the site that lists tested and stable LAN cards is now available.

[055] - MIB Smithy 2.4a5 (Development)
  by Muonics (http://freshmeat.net/users/muonics/)
  Monday, October 13th 2003 13:06

Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
System :: Networking

About: MIB Smithy is an application for SNMP developers, MIB designers,
and Internet-draft authors. It provides a GUI-based environment for
designing, editing, and compiling MIB modules according to the SMIv1 and
SMIv2 standards. It accelerates the development process by providing an
easy-to-use GUI environment for designing, editing, and compiling SNMP MIB
specifications without the syntax and formatting concerns of designing
MIBs by hand. It includes a number of built-in basic SNMP management
tools, XML support, and (with MIB Smithy Professional) support for custom
compiler output formats.

Changes: Records can be previewed individually, as opposed to entire
files/modules, and all can be previewed in MOSY format. Drag and drop
support was added to the project tree for copying and moving records, a
right-click menu for the project itself, and mouse wheel support for all
such trees. Undo/redo support was enabled for multi-line text properties
such as description and reference. Compiler log messages can be
double-clicked to open the appropriate record's properties, or to launch
an integrated text file editor to correct parse errors and reload without
needing a separate application.

[056] - MIB Smithy SDK 2.4a3 (Development)
  by Muonics (http://freshmeat.net/users/muonics/)
  Monday, October 13th 2003 13:03

Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Libraries :: Tcl Extensions

About: MIB Smithy SDK is a dynamic extension to Tcl/Tk (8.1+) that allows
development of custom scripts for controlling SNMP agents, manipulating
SMI definitions, doing conversions, and more. It is based on the core of
Muonics' MIB Smithy, and the SDK supports SMIv1 and SMIv2, as well as
SNMPv1/v2c/v3 with HMAC-SHA-96 and HMAC-MD5-96 authentication and CBC-DES
privacy. It also provides complete read-write access to all elements of
SMI/MIB Module definitions, unlike similar extensions that provide only
read access to a limited subset. The SDK allows multiple discrete SMI
databases and SNMP sessions, and provides all of the built-in validation
and error recovery capabilites of the full product, without the visual MIB
development environment.

Changes: Conf-Modules, Comp-Groups, and Variations can be created with an
automatically assigned name as with other record types. Records with OID
values are automatically assigned a default OID of 0.0, and it's no longer
possible to force them to have no OID. Warning messages from the parser
that were duplicated during validation were eliminated, new checks added,
and more catches were added to the parser to work around MIB syntax
errors. A new SNMP Session "cancel" command and "pending -idlist" option
were added for cancelling requests that are waiting for a response or
timeout.

About: msmtp is an "SMTP plugin" for Mutt and (probably) other MUAs. It
forwards messages to an SMTP server which does the delivery. Features
include various SMTP AUTH methods, TLS-encrypted connections (including
server certificate verification and the ability to send a client
certificate), support for multiple accounts, and IPv6 support.

Changes: This version features sanity checks of the server certificate
when using TLS, strict server certificate verification with

[075] - QDBM: Quick DataBase Manager 1.7.0
  by Mikio Hirabayashi (http://freshmeat.net/users/mikio/)
  Monday, October 13th 2003 06:33

Database

About: QDBM is an embeded database library compatible with GDBM and NDBM.
It features hash database and B+ tree database and is developed referring
to GDBM for the purpose of the following three points: higher processing
speed, smaller size of a database file, and simpler API.

Changes: The API which handles an inverted index was added. An inverted
index is a data structure to retrieve a list of those documents (within a
given collection of documents) that include a particular word. An inverted
index makes it easy to realize a full-text search system. Because this API
does not depend on character codes or languages, it can be used to
implement a full-text search system which can respond to various requests
from users.

System :: Archiving
System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Compression

About: Star is a very fast, POSIX-compliant tar archiver. It reads and
writes POSIX compliant tar archives as well as non-POSIX GNU tar archives.
Star is the first free POSIX.1-2001 compliant tar implementation. It saves
many files together into a single tape or disk archive, and can restore
individual files from the archive. It includes command line interfaces for
the "tar", "Sun-Tar", "cpio", "pax" and "gnutar" cmdline syntax. It
includes a FIFO for speed, a pattern matcher, multi-volume support, the
ability to archive sparse files and ACLs, the ability to archive extended
file flags, automatic archive format detection, automatic byte order
recognition, automatic archive compression/decompression, remote archives,
and special features that allow star to be used for full and incremental
backups. It includes the only known platform independent "rmt" server
program that hides Linux incompatibilities. The "rmt" server from the star
package implements all Sun/GNU/Schily/BSD enhancements and allows any
"rmt" client from any OS to contact any OS as server.

Changes: This release features the first complete multi-volume
implementation that splits files across media and verifies media
correctness via volume labels on readback. Tape change on write can now
be triggered by auto-detecting physical EOM, making it possible to use
compressed tapes.

Changes: There is a new port to Win32 with an identical feature set to
Linux/OSS. Switched to INET rather than UNIX domain sockets for client
server communication. Interfaces have been added for caching of sound
files in the server, and for writing raw sound samples directly to the

[085] - Supybot 0.73.1
  by jemfinch (http://freshmeat.net/users/jemfinch/)
  Monday, October 13th 2003 00:53

Communications :: Chat :: Internet Relay Chat

About: Supybot is a clearly-written Python IRC framework and bot, intended
to be both easily extensible and very flexible. Several modules are
included by default. Numerous plugins are already written, including
Google, Factoids, RSS, Quotes, and URLSnarfer. Plugins and their commands
achieve greater utility via command nesting, something that no other IRC
bot does. The user database is based on "capabilities" rather than obscure
flags or arbitrary numeric "userlevels", giving the bot flexibility and
fine-grained control (think ACLs vs. standard *nix permissions).
Developing your own additions to the bot is simple with the base classes
provided; writing a new command for the bot is as simple as writing a
function. Unlike many other IRC frameworks, this simplicity is achieved at
no cost to generality, which lets new programmers and old programmers
alike feel at home in the framework.

Changes: Numerous bugs were fixed. The Relay plugin now relays topic
changes, the chat command in the DCC plugin works (again), the
debincoming command in the Debian plugin was fixed, the bot no longer
GHOSTs himself if his name changes to an different case form of his
registered name, the Enforcer plugin now properly respects ChanServ as
an authority in the channel, and several bugs in the bot-creation wizard
were fixed (bolding works again and modules without configuration
functions are handled properly).

[091] - Turck MMCache for PHP 2.4.2
  by Dmitry Stogov (http://freshmeat.net/users/dstogov/)
  Monday, October 13th 2003 03:06

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: Turck MMCache is a free PHP accelerator, optimizer, encoder, and
dynamic content cache. It increases performance of PHP scripts by caching
them in a compiled state, so that the overhead of compiling is almost
completely eliminated. It also uses some optimizations for speeding up PHP
scripts' execution. It typically reduces server load and increases the
speed of PHP code by 1-10 times. It is tested with PHP 4.1.0-4.3.3, and
Apache 1.3 and 2.0 under Linux and Windows.

Changes: An Encoder/Loader object inheritance bug was fixed along with
problems with incorrect optimization of "!(strlen($string)!=0)", session
handler registration on "graceful apache restart", and some 64-bit
specific systems. The check for builtin_functions durng class storing
was removed. Locking of disk cache files was implemented. This release
was tested with php5-200309300930.

[092] - turtle 1.4
  by Michael W. Shaffer (http://freshmeat.net/users/mwshaffer/)
  Monday, October 13th 2003 13:07

Games/Entertainment
Multimedia :: Graphics
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio

About: turtle is a portable toy for playing with graphics and sound
programming using Scheme on either Win32 or Linux/X11, and possibly OS
X/Carbon. It is a native application implementing a small platform
abstraction API for graphics and sound, and an embedded Scheme
interpreter (Guile), for developing interesting behaviors on top of that
platform. It features graphics primitives for lines, pixels, text, and
bit blitting, as well as background sound playing, and a library of
useful modules written in Scheme.

Changes: The background sound server has been ported to Win32 as well as
Linux/OSS. Interfaces have been added for caching of sound files and
writing raw sound samples directly to the sound server, as well as new
automatic upsampling of all sound input to correct output rate. There is
general cleanup of directory structure and makefiles, and more pervasive
checking of Scheme data types before conversion to C data types.

[093] - uClinux 2.6.0-test7-uc0 (2.6.x)
  by David McCullough (http://freshmeat.net/users/davidmc/)
  Monday, October 13th 2003 00:49

About: uClinux is a set of patches for Linux that supports MMUless
processors. It brings a full featured operating system onto platforms
that would otherwise run less advanced, simpler operating systems.
uClinux gives the programmer a Linux API with remarkably few concessions
to the lack of MMU (Memory Management Unit), and in terms of code size
and efficiency it has an advantage over standard Linux.

Changes: This release was synced with the latest kernel.

[094] - UESQLC 0.9.4
  by Rafael Jesus Alcantara Perez (http://freshmeat.net/users/ralcan/)
  Monday, October 13th 2003 00:48

Database
Database :: Front-Ends
Software Development :: Compilers

About: Universal Embedded SQL Compiler (UESQLC) is a compiler that
provides a common way for accessing heterogeneous databases. UESQLC is
based on Structured Query Language (SQL) as a standard for accessing data.
This interface provides maximum interoperability, i.e. a single
application can access different SQL Database Management Systems (DBMS)
through a common set of embedded SQL code (UESQL). This enables a
developer to build and distribute a client/server application without
targeting a specific DBMS.

Changes: This release added a command line modifier for checking the
syntax, support for compiling multiple source files at a time, support
for qualified identifiers in the function parameters of embedded
expressions, and fixed a bug with not escaping double quotes, quotes, and
 backslashes. It also added proper support for rollbacks in Java, more
convertors for the standard Java types, and many internal enhancements
and fixes. The --output switch was removed as the output file is now
determined from the input file name.

[095] - ulxmlrpcpp 1.2.4-beta1
  by ewi (http://freshmeat.net/users/ewi/)
  Monday, October 13th 2003 13:04

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers
Software Development :: Object Brokering

About: ulxmlrpcpp is a library to perform calls via XML-RPC in an object
oriented approach. Unlike other implementations, it does not insist on
HTTP for transportation but might also accept other ways (e.g., a simple
serial line with a user-defined protocol).

Changes: Aside from some smaller changes, there is now support for Unicode
and asynchronous communication using threads (tested already on Linux).

  by MUFTI (http://freshmeat.net/users/mufti22/)
  Monday, October 13th 2003 06:26

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Modeling
Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Rendering

About: white_dune is a graphical VRML97 editor. VRML97 (Virtual Reality
Modeling Language) is the ISO standard for displaying 3D data over the Web
via browser plugins. It has support for animation, realtime interaction
and multimedia (image, movie, sound). White_dune can read VRML97 files,
display and let the user change the scenegraph/fields, and load and store
x3d (the next generation VRML XML format) files if configured to work with
the nist.gov x3d translators. It also has support for stereoscopic view
via "quadbuffer"-capable stereo visuals, and support for 3D input devices
like a joystick, spaceball, or magnetic tracker.

Changes: A missing return statement in Scene::writeExternProto that could
make saving impossible was fixed. A crash in drawing faces which occurred
if mesh.coordIndex does not end with -1 was fixed. Quaternion related code
in InputDevice.* and Aflock.* was cleaned up. A bugfix was made for the
different event handling of MS Windows in the animation dialog. Typing
errors in MS Windows/DevIL compilepath were fixed.
