Learning From Kaleidoscope
by Matt Chisholm (http://themes.freshmeat.net/~oosernem/)
Section: Themes
Saturday, October 18th 2003 00:00

Back in the heady days of Macintosh System 7.5, Greg Landweber released
Aaron, which changed the system's windows and buttons to match the
"Platinum" appearance of the upcoming MacOS 8 (codenamed "Copland" after
the composer Aaron Copland). Hacked versions of Aaron quickly appeared
with the MacOS 8 images replaced by images of the hacker's creation.
Landweber realized he had a cash cow and released Kaleidoscope, which
could switch "schemes" on the fly.

[001] - active-menu.el 1.1.2
  by Claus Brunzema (http://freshmeat.net/users/cbrunzema/)
  Saturday, October 18th 2003 07:46

Text Editors :: Emacs

About: active-menu is a small XEmacs module that saves a few extra lines
of screen space in your favorite editor (if XEmacs happens to be your
favorite editor). When active-menu is enabled, the menubar at the top of
the frame is visible only when the mouse pointer is within the area of the
menubar.

Changes: A delay can now be set for the switch from a hidden menubar to a
visible one. This reduces screen flicker if you just move over the top
window border quickly without wanting a menu.

[002] - Aleph 0.9.0
  by Amaury C. Darsch (http://freshmeat.net/users/amaury/)
  Saturday, October 18th 2003 15:39

Software Development :: Interpreters

About: Aleph is a multi-threaded functional programming language with
dynamic symbol bindings that support the object oriented paradigm. It has
a rich set of features providing runtime compatibility with C++. The
engine runs on both 32- and 64-bit platforms, and it is designed to be
portable across platforms.

Changes: The 0.9.0 series precludes a full 1.0 release, scheduled for
2004. This release incorporates a cross debugger, a database manager, and
many new features in the libraries. Support for the IA64 platform has been
added as well.

About: Anamail is an email statistics gatherer. It allows you to construct
a database and to gather arbitrary information from each email message to
go into the database. Facilities are provided to write generic analysis
routines in Perl CGI/mod_perl to display results on Web pages. Sample
files are included to demonstrate gathering of author, date, mailing list,
and MUA for email messages and to do simple analysis of the results.

  Saturday, October 18th 2003 07:38

Communications :: Chat

About: Ayttm is an instant messenger program, supporting various protocols
such as MSN, Yahoo, AIM, Jabber, and more. It is a fork of Everybuddy, and
initially aims to address its problems. It should not segfault when you
use it, and should be almost instantly usable by your mother. Almost
useless prefs should be hidden, reserved for "advanced" users, and things
have to work without wondering what this or that will produce.

Changes: This release adds Jabber over SSL, Jabber typing notification, a
new German translation, password encoding, the ability to not to save
passwords, automatic reconnection to chatrooms, and splitting of long MSN
messages. It fixes bugs related to Yahoo, MSN, AIM-TOC, ICQ-TOC,
segfaults, and memory issues.

[009] - ClairVoyanT SysAdmin 0.1.9.3
  by binduck (http://freshmeat.net/users/binduck/)
  Saturday, October 18th 2003 11:04

About: CVTSA is a tool that allows a user to run arbitrary commands
remotely on a Linux system by sending email to the system. It maintains
security by requiring a password to be present in all email messages that
provide commands. There is a command wrapper file where the user can set
denied commands. It also uses a few other security techniques which are
outlined in the documentation. CVTSA can use a local fetcher to download
email, or it can create a connection to a remote mail server to download
email by itself. There is also an option that allows a pseudo-random
password to be created.

Changes: The cell wrapper option was removed, because of its uselessness.
Cell functions were only used with SMS services and not with WAP or gprs.
WAP or gprs allows you to send email messages from a mail box, so you
could set wrappers as usual. The core_f.c functions were rewritten using
structs, and now work better. A bug in the login function was fixed.

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: Distributed Checksum Clearinghouse (DCC) is a system of clients and
servers that collect and count checksums related to mail messages. The
counts can be used by SMTP servers and mail user agents to detect and
reject bulk mail. DCC servers can exchange common checksums. The checksums
include values that are "fuzzy", or constant across common variations in
bulk messages.

Changes: This version now reports checksums in greylist embargoed mail to
a DCC server while waiting for the embargo to expire. This can let the
very first copy of spam be rejected.

recent standards endorsed by the W3C to offer to the user a sophisticated
environment, similar to a dedicated client. Moreover, the user interface
is generated in a completely automatic way starting from a conceptual
description of the database by means of an XML-based description language
for entity-relationship schemata. From the same description, you can also
automatically obtain diagrams and documentation. ERW can be used for

[017] - File Integrity Command & Control 1.1
  by Terry Ott (http://freshmeat.net/users/TDOFreshmeat/)
  Saturday, October 18th 2003 12:13

System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: File Integrity Command & Control (FICC) helps system administrators
manage multiple Tripwire installations across their network. It maintains
MD5 hashes for the three key Tripwire files (the config file, executable,
and TW database) for every system it monitors. Using SCP, it retrieves
these key files from each system and compares the computed signature
against the signatures in the FICC signature database. If all three
signatures match the database, FICC then connects to the host via SSH and
runs Tripwire. In the event that any of the signatures do not match the
database or Tripwire detects files changes, an email is sent to the "FICC
administrator" of the system in question.

Changes: A possibly unsafe use of the fork() call was fixed. A per-host
feature was added to send email even if no changes were detected. The
scanning of Tripwire output was made more robust to see if Tripwire
detected filesystem changes.

About: FinalSolution is a network administrator's tool to check the
strength of network passwords. This is done by trying to crack the server
you want to test. FinalSolution is multithreaded--i.e., it makes many
simultaneous connections to the test server in order to optimize the
bandwidth usage. It is also distributed, which means you can make the test
from many computers to a single server. It could be useful in some cases
when the test server has more bandwidth than you. Using distributed
cracking helps optimize the bandwidth usage in the server's side.

Changes: This release includes distributed cracking support, which works
but is still beta. The interface was improved and several bugs were
fixed.

Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: POP3

About: Hotwayd is a POP3-HTTPMail (WebDAV) gateway. HTTPMail is a somewhat
undocumented WebDAV-based protocol used by a variety of mail servers
including Hotmail, MSN, Lycos, and Spray. Hotwayd allows you to use any
standard POP3 mail reader to check your mailboxes on these servers,
similar to the way that Outlook Express can access a hotmail account. It
supports features such as folder selection to get folders other than the
inbox and proxy server support (if you require a proxy to access the
internet).

Changes: Proxy support is now working properly, so it is now possible to
access your email via a Web proxy such as squid. Support for a variety of
Lycos mailboxes via HTTPMail has been added. Logging levels are now
configurable. It's now possible to download individual folders other than
your inbox. A bug which may have been causing slow message downloading

Software Development :: Libraries

About: Libnids is a library that provides the functionality of one of the
NIDS (Network Intrusion Detection System) components, namely E-component.
Libnids code watches all local network traffic, cooks received datagrams a
bit, and provides convenient information about them to the NIDS analyzing
modules. Libnids performs assembly of TCP segments into TCP streams, IP
defragmentation, and TCP port scan detection.

Changes: Starting with version 1.18, libnids discards TCP packets with old
timestamps, which is required to pass "fragroute" tests. Memory corruption
which could be caused by overlarge TCP packets has been fixed. checksum.c
has been adjusted to not use multiline literals (for gcc 3.3). In
configure.in, compilation is attempted even if libnet files are found;
there is another library with the same name. A bug has been fixed in
"collect" field handling where if you did collect-- and then collect++
(which is rare) you would get a single junk packet.

[029] - Linux 2.6.0-test8 (2.5)
  by Mathias Schindler (http://freshmeat.net/users/presroi/)
  Saturday, October 18th 2003 15:44

System :: Operating System
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: Linux is a clone of the Unix kernel, written from scratch by Linus
Torvalds with assistance from a loosely-knit team of hackers across the
Net. It aims towards POSIX and Single UNIX Specification compliance. It
has all the features you would expect in a modern fully-fledged Unix
kernel, including true multitasking, virtual memory, shared libraries,
demand loading, shared copy-on-write executables, proper memory
management, and TCP/IP networking.

Changes: Many changes, but most of them are fairly small. The
/proc/PID/stat oops that multiple people reported has been fixed. There is
a workaround for an Athlon prefetch bug (occasional spurious page faults).
Serverworks PIO autotuning and some cpufrequency calculations have been
fixed. NFS O_DIRECT works. There are also some architecture and driver
updates.

[030] - Linux Bandwidth Arbitrator 2.8 (CD distribution)
  by astormchaser (http://freshmeat.net/users/astormchaser/)
  Saturday, October 18th 2003 07:49

System :: Networking
System :: Systems Administration

About: Linux Bandwidth Arbitrator allows beginning-to-advanced network
administrators to control bandwidth. It is designed to be completely
turn-key in its default configuration. You just plug it into your network
trunk, and it self configures and immediately starts slowing "bandwidth
hogs". It can be configured to target specific applications such as Kazaa,
IMAP, and POP. It also comes with denial of service protection and a
special reservation system for voice and video traffic QOS.

Changes: This release provides uplink and downlink control for MAC address
shaping. It is built on the Arbitrator 6.31 GPL base (kernel) which was
developed to correct some instability with some LAN cards. It also has GUI
enhancements.

[043] - Port Scan Attack Detector 1.2.4
  by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
  Saturday, October 18th 2003 21:31

System :: Networking :: Firewalls
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: Port Scan Attack Detector (psad) is a collection of four
lightweight system daemons written in Perl and C that are designed to work
with Linux firewalling code (iptables in the 2.4.x kernels, and ipchains
in the 2.2.x kernels) to detect port scans. It features a set of highly
configurable danger thresholds (with sensible defaults provided), verbose
alert messages that include the source, destination, scanned port range,
begin and end times, TCP flags and corresponding nmap options (Linux 2.4.x
kernels only), email alerting, and automatic blocking of offending IP
addresses via dynamic configuration of ipchains/iptables firewall
rulesets. In addition, for the 2.4.x kernels psad incorporates many of the
TCP, UDP, and ICMP signatures included in Snort to detect highly suspect
scans for various backdoor programs (e.g. EvilFTP, GirlFriend, SubSeven),
DDoS tools (mstream, shaft), and advanced port scans (syn, fin, Xmas)
which are easily leveraged against a machine via nmap. Psad also uses
packet TTL, IP id, TOS, and TCP window sizes to passively fingerprint the
remote operating system from which scans originate.

Changes: This version adds support for Gentoo Linux (to be released
shortly in the portage tree), adds a danger level to subject in email
alerts, removes diskmond altogether since it now handles disk utilization
directly, adds exclusion of loopback and local addresses from auto-
blocking routines, includes a bugfix for an auto-blocking loop after
timeouts are hit, and adds a --status-dl [n] option to display only those
scans that have reached a danger level of at least [n] in --Status
output.
