[002] - Astaro Security Linux 4.016 (Stable 4.x)
  by astaro (http://freshmeat.net/users/astaro/)
  Thursday, October 23rd 2003 05:24

System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: Astaro Security Linux is a firewall solution. It does stateful
packet inspection filtering, content filtering, user authentication, virus
scanning, spam protection, VPN with IPSec (PKI for X.509 certificates) and
PPTP, Wireless LAN, VLAN, PPPoE, PPPoA, and much more. With its Web-based
management tool, WebAdmin, and the ability to pull updates via the
Internet, it is pretty easy to manage. It is based on a special hardened
Linux 2.4 distribution where most daemons are running in change-roots and
are protected by kernel capabilities.

Changes: This new ISO includes a new kernel for supporting new hardware,
extends PCMCIA card support (Prism 2/2.5/3) for WLAN, adds more ACPI
functions, and has DMA support for speeding up newer hard disks. It fixes
several bugs and other issues with PPTP. ASL 4.016 includes a 30 day
evaluation license with all features enabled.

  Thursday, October 23rd 2003 07:59

About: BibORB is a set of PHP+XML+XSLT scripts to transform BibTeX
bibliographies into an HTML more readable display with no effort (almost
nothing to do other than write a BibTeX file). It was designed to
facilitate the management of electronic versions (.ps, .pdf, etc.) of
papers referenced in the BibTeX file. Electronic papers are directly
accessible via the HTML interface. The Web display allows browsing papers
by groups and offers some search requests (author, title, or keywords). It
also offers an edition mode to add or modify entries. It can be used
locally or on a remote machine.

[005] - Big Medium 1.2.2 (Stable)
  by Josh Clark (http://freshmeat.net/users/joshclark/)
  Thursday, October 23rd 2003 06:08

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: Big medium is an affordable, full-featured content management
system that makes it easy to manage dynamic, fast-changing Web sites. The
browser-based interface allows even the most non-technical staff to add,
edit and publish Web content without needing to learn HTML. Big Medium
empowers writers, editors, and business users to update Web sites
directly, freeing Web professionals to be more productive and creative. It
is written in Perl to run on Web servers running a UNIX operating system.

Changes: Support for SMTP email was added as an alternative to sendmail. A
handful of reported issues were addressed. Also, registered users of Big
Medium are invited to beta-test Big Medium 1.2.2 on a server running
Windows and share their reports. When using Big Medium 1.2.2 on a Windows
server, users should consider Big Medium 1.2.2 to be beta software and
understand that there may be problems and bugs in a Windows environment
that do not appear on Unix-based systems.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Office/Business :: Groupware

About: Booby is a multiuser, multilanguage, fully themeable Web-based
desktop application which provides online management for bookmarks,
contacts, todos, notes, and news. It is written in PHP and is mostly
database independent by using the database abstraction layer 'ADOdb'. It
is fully themeable (using Smarty). It is based on a generic MVC design
pattern/framework that uses items with a potential hierarchical
relationship as its base.

Changes: This release adds support for Mozilla/Netscape/Opera sidebars,
lost password 'recovery' (not really recovery, a new random password is
generated and send by email), and Opera addresses import functionality.

to any Java application through JDBC. It works with any Java application
without code modification and with any database engine. C-JDBC has been
successfully tested with Tomcat, JBoss, JOnAS, MySQL, PostgreSQL, HSQL,

[009] - Coherent Mail Gateway 0.7.0
  by Thomas Worthington (http://freshmeat.net/users/nagora/)
  Thursday, October 23rd 2003 08:24

Communications :: Email :: Mail Transport Agents
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: POP3

About: Coherent Mail Gateway is intended to be a very easy to set up MTA
using SMTP and POP3. Greylisting is used on the SMTP daemon to reduce
spam. In addition, quite a lot of checks on the validity of information
from the SMTP client (such as claimed server name and sender) are carried
out, and anyone caught telling lies is disconnected. As well as
greylisting, black and white listing is also supported. The target market
is small offices and home users with static IPs. Others can use the
system but its value will be limited.

Changes: Microsoft Entourage has a bug in it which causes it get confused
by the order of headers under MIME. The main aim of this release is to
ensure that headers are in the order that MSE needs them. Correctly
written email systems are not affected. The other major addition is that
"debug" now takes various levels rather than simply spewing out every
message it can. A couple of minor bugs were also fixed.

  Thursday, October 23rd 2003 02:07

Software Development :: Documentation

About: Documancer is a programmer's documentation reader for Unix which
has very fast fulltext searching. It has several advantages over using a
Web browser or specialized format-specific viewers (such as info), namely
unified access to all documentation formats and a GUI that is
better-suited for documentation reading than a generic Web browser. It can

(VC++, GNUWIN32, Borland, VisualAge C++), FreeBSD, and Sequent.

Changes: An attach() API has been added to FXWindow, which allows a
foreign window to be swallowed into the FOX widget tree. A new FLAG_OWNED
is added to FXWindow to determine if the window handle is owned by
FXWindow or whether it belongs to a foreign window; various API's have
been fixed accordingly. A new class, FXHash, maps pointers to pointers;
its primary purpose is to map window handles to FOX widgets. A bug in

[033] - ipsvd 0.7.0
  by Gerrit Pape (http://freshmeat.net/users/pape/)
  Thursday, October 23rd 2003 01:18

System :: Networking

About: ipsvd is a set of "Internet protocol service daemons" for Unix. It
includes daemons for TCP/IP and UDP/IP. An Internet protocol service
(ipsv) daemon waits for incoming connections on a socket, and for new
connections, it conditionally runs an arbitrary program to handle the
connection. ipsv daemons can be told to read and follow pre-defined
instructions on how to handle incoming connections. Based on the client's
IP address or hostname, it's possible to run different programs, set a
different environment, deny a connection, or set a per host concurrency
limit. ipsvd can be used to run services usually run by inetd, xinetd, or
tcpserver. Normally the ipsv daemons are run by a supervisor process, such
as runsv from the runit package, or supervise from the daemontools
package.

Changes: A new type of instruction was added. ipsvd can now be told to
look up IP addresses of (dynamic) hostnames on incoming connections, and
handle a connection using different instructions if the client's IP
address matches one of these IP addresses. The examples Web page was
updated slightly, and now includes an example of the new check host
instructions.

[039] - Java Serialization to XML 2.1.3 (JSX 2)

Software Development

About: Java Serialization to XML (JSX) allows you to write and read any
Java object graph as XML data with one line of code. You can verify your
data and manipulate it with standard XML tools like DOM, JDOM, and XSLT.
JSX automatically creates a file format/wire protocol for all Java
objects, so that it is always up to date as the code evolves. When you
need backward compatibility, JSX provides the evolution techniques of Java
Object Serialization, and you can also modify the XML directly. Unlike
databinders, such as JAXB and Castor, no explicit mapping is required, and
JSX works for all objects.

Changes: JSX now works with Java 1.3 as well as with Java 1.4

About: JCap is a Java application for adding captions and descriptions to
your digital photograph collection and includes a search dialog for
finding photos later. It is completely self-contained; it doesn't require
a separate database application or Web server to run. Captions,
descriptions, and keywords are stored in plain text files in the same
folder as the images they describe and can be read by any application that
can read text files. The primary goals are: to help you find photos later,
to help share photos with others, and to be able to read photo captions
and descriptions thirty years from now on whatever computer you happen to
have at the time.

Changes: A bug where the "The JPEG image could not be decoded." message
appeared when viewing non-JPEG images has been fixed. A bug with drag and
drop has been fixed where the dropped folder would not be remembered if
the app was closed after the folder was dropped. There is some code

About: KKBSwitch is a keyboard layout indicator for KDE 2 and 3. It is
useful when you have configured the XKeyboard extension of your X Server
to have more than one keyboard group, for example US/ASCII and Russian. It
displays an icon in the system tray that indicates which layout is
currently active. Note that it does not help you configure XKeyboard, it
merely serves as the indicator of the current group. You still have to
configure XKeyboard by editing the XF86Config file. You can switch
keyboard groups by clicking the icon or selecting the desired group from
the icon's menu. Icons corresponding to different groups are configurable
(chosen from the country flag pixmaps that ship with KDE). There is also a
"Toggle mode" (toggles between the two most recently used layouts). The
keyboard layout can be switched for each window separately (as in Windows)
or globally.

Changes: The style of the layout indicator icon is now configurable.
Keyboard shortcuts to activate layouts, an autostart option, and a
Ukrainian translation were added. Compatibility with Red Hat 9 (which
doesn't ship KDE country flag icons) was ensured.

About: Pen is a load balancer for "simple" TCP-based protocols such as
HTTP or SMTP. It allows several servers to appear as one to the outside.
It automatically detects servers that are down and distributes clients
among the available servers. This gives high availability and scalable
performance.

Changes: Clients can now be expired after a specified time from the last
connection, meaning that the load balancing algorithm no longer tries to
keep sending them to the same server. This distributes load more equally
between servers when there are few clients. A new command that allows
the current running configuration to be written into a file was added.

residing on a server. The library, together with a
WebServicesConnectivityAddOn, also allows developers to easily consume Web
services from within Flash MX.

Changes: Exception errors in Gateway.php that were sometimes thrown
(depending on the error reporting settings) were fixed. Encoding of UTF-8
characters was fixed. The size of the message from the server was reduced
by removing unnecessary URL-encoding. WebServicesConnectivityAddon.zip was

[074] - Python milter 0.6.3
  by Stuart D. Gathman (http://freshmeat.net/users/stuartdgathman/)
  Thursday, October 23rd 2003 16:19

Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: The milter module for Python provides a python interface to
Sendmail's libmilter that exploits all its features. Milters can run on
the same machine as sendmail, or another machine. The milter can even
run with a different operating system or processor than sendmail.
Sendmail talks to the milter via a local or internet socket, and keeps
the milter informed of events as it processes a mail connection. At any
point, the milter can cut the conversation short by telling sendmail to
ACCEPT, REJECT, or DISCARD the message. After receiving a complete
message from sendmail, the milter can again REJECT or DISCARD it, but it
can also ACCEPT it with changes to the headers or body.

several people to screen spam for a whole department. It fixes a minor
bug where "defang" copies of false positives were saved.

Software Development :: Build Tools

About: SCons is a software construction tool (build tool substitute for
Make) implemented in Python. It features a modular build engine that can
be embedded in other software. SCons configuration files are Python
scripts that call the build engine API. It can scan files to detect
dependencies automatically and maintain a global view of all dependencies
in a build tree, and uses MD5 signatures to detect changed file contents
reliably. Timestamps can be used if you prefer. SCons also supports
parallel builds and is easily extensible through user-defined builder and
 scanner objects.

Changes: A SCons User's Guide has been newly released. All default
Builders and most environment methods can be called as global functions,
and most global functions now have corresponding environment methods. The
parallel build (-j) implementation has improved performance and handling
of keyboard interrupts. This release may be configured to store signatures
in a global .sconsign file. Changes within source or dependent directories
now trigger rebuilds. This release searchs for and uses Jar manifest

[090] - Virtual Universe / Virtual Worlds 0.38
  by ElwoodBlues (http://freshmeat.net/users/ElwoodBlues/)
  Thursday, October 23rd 2003 11:10

Communications :: Chat
Games/Entertainment
Multimedia :: Graphics

About: VU/VW is a 3D cyberspace which offers more possibilities than just
chat: it is a combination of the Web, chat, and instant messaging within a
realistic, three-dimensional cyberspace. Here people can meet, interact
with each other, and build houses and whole worlds. The Virtual Universe
is a virtual reality environment which runs on top of the Internet.

Changes: Bugs have been fixed in the Fountain object, the "rotation"
command, and for Windows in the Pointlight object. Terrains can be created
as type "Complex Tiles" or "Repeated Tile" now, and the object download is
faster.

  by Aymerick Jéhanne (http://freshmeat.net/users/ajehanne/)
  Thursday, October 23rd 2003 20:51

Software Development :: Libraries
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: The WBXML Library is a C library for handling WBXML (Wireless
Binary XML) documents. It consists of a WBXML parser (with a SAX-like
interface), and a generic WBXML encoder.

Changes: A lot of work was done on SyncML. Now, XML-to-WBXML and
WBXML-to-XML conversion should work for SyncML too. This still needs to be
tested.

[092] - webCDwriter 2.6.2
  by Jörg Haeger (http://freshmeat.net/users/jhaeger/)
  Thursday, October 23rd 2003 01:24

Internet
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Writing
System :: Networking

About: webCDwriter can be used to make the CD- and DVD-writer(s) connected
to a Linux box available to all users in your network. It consists of the
server CDWserver and the clients webCDcreator and rcdrecord. CDWserver
stores the files transmitted by the clients, reserves the CD-writer and
controls the CD-writer using cdrecord. webCDcreator is a Java applet that
runs within your browser or by Java Web Start, assists you when putting
together a CD, and transmits the files. Finally rcdrecord is a command
line client that tries to offer the functionality of cdrecord over the
network with full multi-user support.

Changes: This release fixed a CD copying bug and simplified the rejection
of CDs by user IDs. CDWserver Pro now offers the ability to link
predefined burn projects in your local Web pages. DVD support was added
to the tools rcdrecord and files2cd when used with CDWserver Pro.

for hardware manufactured by Compal and used by vendors such as Acer, HP,
and Toshiba. You probably need to patch to your kernel to enable support
for this. See the README.compal file for all details. A spec file for RPM
creation was added. Yet another /proc file was added, from which
temperature can be read.

[097] - ypserv 2.10
  by Thorsten Kukuk (http://freshmeat.net/users/kukuk/)
  Thursday, October 23rd 2003 01:29

System :: Networking

About: The Network Information Service (NIS) provides a simple network
lookup service consisting of databases and processes. It was formerly
known as Sun Yellow Pages (YP). The functionality of the two remains the
same, only the name has changed. Its purpose is to provide information,
that has to be known throughout the network, to all machines on the
network.

Changes: Some improvements were made to the parser in makedbm. Signal
handler bugs and incorrect return codes for invalid map and domain names
were fixed in ypserv. The fork limit was removed. A bug that caused ypxfr
to not get the correct master name was also fixed.
