  by Jez (http://freshmeat.net/users/jez/)
  Saturday, October 25th 2003 12:27

Software Development :: Libraries
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: Arabica is a C++ XML parser toolkit that has a full SAX2
implementation (the Simple API for XML), including the optional interfaces
and helper classes. It also implements the W3C Document Object Model Level
2.0 Core. It delivers UTF-8 encoded std::strings or UCS-2 std::wstrings,
but can also accommodate custom string types and alternative encodings. It
provides uniform SAX2 wrappers for the expat parser, Xerces, libxml, and
the Microsoft XML parser COM component. The DOM is layered on top of the
SAX2 implementation. The project was formerly called SAXinC++.

Changes: This release adds both SAX and DOM writers, allowing SAX events
and DOM trees to be serialized to iostreams (file, console, etc). Several
codecvt facets were added to support the writers, providing several common
conversions, such as UTF8 to UTF16 and ISO8559-1 to UTF16. Portability and
configuration improvements were made. Assorted bugfixes were made.

through the ICQ server and email gateways supported by Mirabilis),
contacts, and email express messages, and it has many other useful
features.

Changes: MSN support was removed. LiveJournal posting parameters were
added, and a set of LiveJournal friend management features were added.
Friends can now be added and removed directly from within the program,
and the program will notify you when someone adds or removes you from
their friends list. Some minor AIM, Jabber, and Yahoo! fixes were made.
Several useful patches were applied, and weird memory leak problems were
fixed.

About: This project allows the distribution of a genetic algorithm
evolving hardware designs across the Internet by setting up an island on
each clients' PC which will evolve during idle time. Individuals from
these islands will migrate between each other as they compete for
survival. All source code is available and is generalizable to any GA or
distributed processing task.

Changes: Computational effort is now measured, making statistics a lot
fairer. Data is now generated to create graphs showing island topology and
fitnesses across islands. The project is now tackling the largest
sequential circuit evolution experiment. Circuits evolved so far have
outperformed conventional designs.

  Saturday, October 25th 2003 01:09

Database :: Front-Ends
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: User Interfaces

About: ERW (Entities and Relationships on the Web) is an innovative system
for handling complex databases using a Web browser. It uses the most
recent standards endorsed by the W3C to offer to the user a sophisticated
environment, similar to a dedicated client. Moreover, the user interface
is generated in a completely automatic way starting from a conceptual
description of the database by means of an XML-based description language
for entity-relationship schemata. From the same description, you can also
automatically obtain diagrams and documentation. ERW can be used for
content management, in particular when the data is structured along
complex relations.

Changes: A major bug in type transformations that caused it to work
correctly only for single parent inheritance and only in a database
without referential integrity checks was fixed. They should now work in
all cases.

[014] - gentoo 0.11.38
  by Emil Brink (http://freshmeat.net/users/emilbrink/)
  Saturday, October 25th 2003 12:15

Desktop Environment :: File Managers

About: gentoo is a file manager written in C. It uses the GTK+ toolkit,
and the two-pane concept, somewhat inspired by DOpus. gentoo strives to be
very configurable, and also to let you do all configuration from a GUI
within the program itself. Using advanced file typing and styling systems,
gentoo determines how to display files in its listings, and also how to
act on them. The package includes a set of ~100 unique handcrafted icons,
for many different types of files.

Changes: Directory copying left the destination directory with wrong
protection flags, and has been fixed. Attribute copy failures can now be
optionally ignored. Focusing improvements were made, especially with FAM.
Delete can now optionally alter the protection of required files when it
fails because of permissions.

[027] - K8000 Event Language 1.3
  by Benoit LOCHER (http://freshmeat.net/users/blocher/)
  Saturday, October 25th 2003 19:47

Other/Nonlisted Topic

About: K8000 Event Language (KEL) is a programming environment for
Velleman's K8000 board. It is a compiled language, designed to be fast and
responsive, for controlling and automating processes. It is powered by the
Linux operating system as a multi-threaded application. One available
application is a complete house alarm that can send alerts through email,
SMS, or voice messages. It can also drive devices like an outside alert
lamp or a siren.

Changes: This version adds boolean variables whose changes do not go into
the FIFO as for flags, and adds system state backup/restore by the
implementation of a software 'nvram', allowing to save register and
boolean values on environment shutdown, and loading the previously saved

[028] - Kodo JDO 2.5.5
  by Chox (http://freshmeat.net/users/neelan/)
  Saturday, October 25th 2003 14:18

About: Kodo JDO allows you to write database calls using Java statements
instead of SQL statements, by supporting the Java Data Objects standard
for transparent persistence. It is the most complete implementation of the
JDO specification for relational data stores, and comes with tools for
producing a schema from an object model, producing class files from an
existing schema, and a performance pack (distributed caching and statement
batching) that improves performance by 15 - 30 times. It supports most
relational databases, application servers, and IDEs, and reduces the total
coding effort by 20-40%.

Changes: This release corrects a few minor bugs related to prepared
statement and query caching, as well as the overall concurrency of the
cache. A problem in SolarMetric with checking the optimistic lock version
of a subclass that uses a vertical inheritance mapping strategy was fixed.
A synchronization problem in EEFactoryHelper that could result in a
ConcurrentModificationException when Kodo is used under high load with
managed transactions was also fixed.

[035] - MemAid 0.4.5
  by David Calinski (http://freshmeat.net/users/neodave/)
  Saturday, October 25th 2003 19:49

Education
Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)

About: MemAid is like a traditional flashcard program to help you memorize
question/answer pairs, but with an important twist: it uses a neural
network to schedule the best time for an item to come up for review.
Difficult items that you tend to forget quickly will be scheduled more
often, while MemAid won't waste your time on things you remember well.
This means that your learning process becomes much more efficient, because
the neural network gradually adapts to your personal memory model.

Changes: In this version, the implementation of the "hint" feature has
been improved. A "keyboard feedback" feature has been added, allowing you
to type hidden part of an answer and get feedback (if you are right or
not). The "learn ahead" mode is back, but this time is well implemented.
A number of smaller enhancements have been made.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio

About: MP3DB2 is a collection of bash scripts for keeping track of large
MP3 collections. It will retrieve song information from the filenames and
ID3 tags of a directory or CD of MP3s and store them in a local
database. It then allows you to search any of the fields, generate a
master listing of all your complete albums, see the size of your entire
collection, and more.

Changes: There is a new installation/configuration script that will
generate a configuration file, then allow the user to change settings
through an interactive menu. A database to HTML converter has been added
to the package. The configuration file is now stored as .mp3db2rc in the

  Saturday, October 25th 2003 14:15

Security
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Installation/Setup

About: radmind is a suite of Unix command-line tools and a server designed
to remotely administer the file systems of multiple Unix machines. At its
core, radmind operates as a tripwire. It is able to detect changes to any
managed filesystem object, e.g. files, directories, links, etc. However,
radmind goes further than just integrity checking: once a change is
detected, radmind can optionally reverse the change. Each managed machine
may have its own loadset composed of multiple, layered overloads. This
allows, for example, the operating system to be described separately from
applications. Loadsets are stored on a remote server. By updating a
loadset on the server, changes can be pushed to managed machines.

Changes: f_notls exits so that the client gets an error message. On store
failure, the client waits 30 seconds for the server to give any messages.
The store routines exit on network and system errors.

is written in pure C and can quickly process mail with little overhead.
Unlike a conventional virus scanner, there are no specific virus or worm
definitions. Instead, it identifies potentially dangerous attachments
based on filename extension and on encoded body content. It can be used
from within sendmail, postfix, procmail, or pretty much anywhere else.

[063] - SwenDeleter 1.4
  by fxn (http://freshmeat.net/users/fxn/)
  Saturday, October 25th 2003 19:53

Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: SwenDeleter tries to identify email messages infected with the Swen
worm in POP3 mailboxes and delete them on the server. It applies some
heuristics to the headers and size of the messages, in order to avoid
downloading the actual email, thus making retrievals less taxing. It has
both interactive and nonstop modes.

Changes: In this version, the size threshold and highlighting are now
parameters. The server, login, and password can be entered interactively.

[070] - Womcat Bookmarks 2.5
  by Philip Dorrell (http://freshmeat.net/users/womcat/)
  Saturday, October 25th 2003 00:35

Communications

About: Womcat Bookmarks is a program that maintains Web bookmarks in a set
of hierarchical folders. It can output the bookmarks as an HTML page and
as an RSS 2.0 file that can be placed on a Web site. The RSS file maps
folder names into the "category" element. It can download other RSS files,
treating them as categorized bookmarks to create a local database of Web
bookmarks that can be browsed by subject. It supports RSS discovery by
allowing posting RSS file URLs as new items. It also acts as a basic RSS
feed reader. It also includes a Weak Subscriptions feature, which is a bit
like a personalized version of BlogDex.

Changes: The interface was fine-tuned for weak subscriptions. Most
recently mentioned URLs are now displayed first. Dtail logging was
disabled, speeding things up somewhat. The interface for the "Recommend"
bookmarklet now allows the creation of a new subject all in the same
page. After clicking on URLs, their CSS class is changed to make it
possible to see what you have already viewed without refreshing the
page.

[071] - xCHM 0.8.7
  by Razvan Cojocaru (http://freshmeat.net/users/thewhiterabbit/)
  Saturday, October 25th 2003 01:32

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers

About: xCHM is a graphical CHM viewer for UNIX. It's based on CHMLIB and
written with wxGTK. It is able to display the topics tree, work with
displayed pages history, print the current page, work with bookmarks,
change fonts and fast search through all the pages of the loaded .chm
document. Being indirectly dependent on GTK+, the possibility of changing
GTK+ skins makes xCHM theme-friendly.

Changes: File history support was added. The user set content and search
panel size are now remembered. The default HTML window font size was
reduced from 14 to 12 points.

[072] - xine xine-lib 1-rc2
  by Siggi (http://freshmeat.net/users/siggi/)
  Saturday, October 25th 2003 19:53

Multimedia :: Video :: Display

About: xine is a free multimedia player. It plays back CDs, DVDs, and
VCDs. It also decodes multimedia files like AVI, MOV, WMV, and MP3 from
local disk drives, and displays multimedia streamed over the Internet. It
interprets many of the most common multimedia formats available--and some
of the most uncommon formats, too. All those features come in a reusable
library (xine-lib) which can easily be embedded in your applications.

Changes: This release comes with built-in support for S(X)VCD navigation
(ie. Video CD menus), better handling of filenames that contain "#" or
"%" characters, and it now supports hardware accelerated MPEG decoding
via XvMC. Additionally, a security hole in the "#save" MRL option was
fixed so that files can now only be saved into an explicitly specified
directory.
