  Wednesday, November 5th 2003 02:52

Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: LibrariesAbout: 4tH is a Forth compiler with a
little difference. Instead of the standard Forth engine it features a
conventional compiler. 4tH is a very small compiler that can create
bytecode, C-embeddable bytecode, standalone executables, but also works
fine as a scripting language. It supports over 85% of the ANS Forth CORE
wordset and features conditional compilation, pipes, files, assertions,
forward declarations, recursion, include files, etc. It comes with an RPN
calculator, line editor, compiler, decompiler, C-source generators, and a
virtual machine.

Changes: In this version, pipes have been implemented for the Win32
version. The execution of a bytecode program can be suspended and
resumed.

[013] - DKMS 0.44.05
  by lerhaupt (http://freshmeat.net/users/lerhaupt/)
  Wednesday, November 5th 2003 14:13

System :: Systems AdministrationAbout: DKMS (Dynamic Kernel Module
Support) is a framework where device driver source can reside outside the
kernel source tree so that it is very easy to rebuild modules as you
upgrade kernels. This allows Linux vendors to provide driver drops without
having to wait for new kernel releases (as a stopgap before the code can
make it back into the kernel), while also taking out the guesswork for
customers attempting to recompile modules for new kernels. For veteran
Linux users it also provides some advantages since a separate framework
for driver drops will remove kernel releases as a blocking mechanism for
distributing code.

Changes: A $MODULES_CONF_OBSOLETES[#] directory array has been added to
specify which modules your new module makes obsolete. During installation,
it will remove these obsolete modules from /etc/modules.conf. As you
uninstall modules, it will first try to put an original module back into
the kernel. If it does this, it will leave the reference to the
non-obsolete module in modules.conf. If no original_module exists in the
kernel, but an obsolete module does, DKMS will put the obsolete module
reference back into modules.conf before remaking the initrd.

[016] - GiNaC 1.1.5
  by Christian Bauer (http://freshmeat.net/users/cebix/)
  Wednesday, November 5th 2003 11:19

Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Software Development :: LibrariesAbout: GiNaC (GiNaC is Not a CAS
(Computer Algebra System)) is a C++ library for symbolic calculations. It
is designed to allow the creation of integrated systems that embed
symbolic manipulations together with more established areas of computer
science (like computation-intense numeric applications, graphical
interfaces, etc.). Contrary to other CASes it does not try to provide
extensive algebraic capabilities and a simple programming language but
instead accepts a given language (C++) and extends it by a set of
algebraic capabilities.

Changes: Harmonic polylogarithms numerically evaluate for arbitrary
arguments. The zeta function can also be given a list as a parameter, in
which case it becomes a multiple zeta value. The order of parameters for
the multiple polylogarithm has been corrected. Finally, documentation for
the nested sums functions has been added.

[029] - KKBSwitch 1.3.1
  by Leonid Zeitlin (http://freshmeat.net/users/lz/)
  Wednesday, November 5th 2003 05:42

Desktop Environment :: K Desktop Environment (KDE)About: KKBSwitch is a
keyboard layout indicator for KDE 2 and 3. It is useful when you have
configured the XKeyboard extension of your X Server to have more than one
keyboard group, for example US/ASCII and Russian. It displays an icon in
the system tray that indicates which layout is currently active. Note that
it does not help you configure XKeyboard, it merely serves as the
indicator of the current group. You still have to configure XKeyboard by
editing the XF86Config file. You can switch keyboard groups by clicking
the icon or selecting the desired group from the icon's menu. Icons
corresponding to different groups are configurable (chosen from the
country flag pixmaps that ship with KDE). There is also a "Toggle mode"
(toggles between the two most recently used layouts). The keyboard layout
can be switched for each window separately (as in Windows) or globally.

Changes: This release restores compatibility with KDE 3.0, which was
unintentionally broken in version 1.3. Users of KDE 3.0 can now upgrade to
version 1.3.1. Users of KDE 3.1 don't need to upgrade. Also, the Ukrainian
translation was slightly updated.

Communications :: Email :: Filters
Software Development :: Interpreters
Software Development :: LibrariesAbout: libSieve is a standalone library
pulled from CMU's implementation of their Sieve mail sorting library in
the Cyrus mail server. Either shared or statically linked, libSieve will
help to bring mail sorting functionality into your mail server
application without the need to reinvent the wheel. As a library, it is
not intended for end users expecting a ready-to-run program.

Changes: API calls for managing "parser threads" have been added added. At
this time, only one thread can be created; once multithreading is
supported internally by the parsing engine, the API will be ready already.
The calling convention for sieve2_execute() has changed for consistency
with sieve2_validate(). The namespace of internal global functions has
been cleaned up. Most internal functions are prefixed with libsieve_, with
the rest to follow.

  Wednesday, November 5th 2003 14:14

System :: Installation/SetupAbout: The Linux From Scratch project is
intended for Linux users who want to build their own custom Linux system.
Reasons for wanting to build such a system are diverse. Perhaps you want
to get into more detail as to what happens behind the scenes. Perhaps you
are fed up with the bloated standard distributions. Or perhaps you don't
want to rely on pre-compiled binaries out of concerns for security.

Changes: This major milestone features a new method with strong emphasis
on building a correct compilation environment and base libraries
independent from the host system. It features Linux kernel version 2.4.22,
the GNU C Library 2.3.2, the GNU Compiler Collection 3.3.1, and a
bootloader change from LILO to GRUB, amongst other package upgrades. The
book's explanatory texts have also been enhanced.

[061] - soundmosaic 1.1
  by cherub (http://freshmeat.net/users/cherub/)
  Wednesday, November 5th 2003 05:30

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Sound SynthesisAbout: Soundmosaic constructs
an approximation of one sound out of small pieces of other sounds. The
soundmosaic algorithm is: split the target file up into equal-sized
segments, or "tiles". For each tile in the target file, find the closest
match in the source files, and replace the target tile with the tile from
the source files.

Changes: The distance metric used to compare tiles was improved. It is now
the correlation between normalized tile vectors. Previously soundmosaic
used the Manhattan distance between the "normalized" vectors, where
"normalization" was done in the common audio sense of increasing the
volume as much as possible without clipping (this corresponds to mapping
onto the surface of a hypercube rather than a hypersphere). This version
compiles on MacOS X. The build scripts now use automake. Innumerable minor
bugs were fixed.

[062] - The Tamber Project 1.9.5 (Numenor)
  by tamber (http://freshmeat.net/users/tamber/)
  Wednesday, November 5th 2003 16:31

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/LibrariesAbout: The
Tamber project is a free, componentised n-tier website engine that uses
open languages such as XML and JavaScript. In a nutshell, content is
stored in separate XML files, in databases, or other data objects;
business functions are carried out by JavaScript and ASP; and presentation
is controlled by an XSL transformation, which allows for delivery over
multiple channels such as HTML, WAP and email. Currently Tamber contains
modules that support; automatic locale detection, search engine tracking
and optimisation, e-commerce catalogues; shopping carts and order
management, secure sign in, data access and conversion services, advanced
session management, content managemt tools and forums.

Changes: This release adds lots of bugfixes and a new layout for
/admin/admin_contents.asp. The CMS can now use primitives/templates. It
supports virtual stores (stores selling different items, such as Apparel
and CDs). The installer/upgrader is fully working and can import table
data (agent, countries, etc.) from an external XML file and use
user-defined DSN pointers and install on a SQL server. The "import for SQL
from XML" function can now find the correct table in a multi-table XML
file and return valid SQL statements. The log file exporter has been
cleaned. Database tables have been renamed around logical hierarchies.

[063] - ThinStation 1.0.2
  by Paolo Salvan (http://freshmeat.net/users/psalvan/)
  Wednesday, November 5th 2003 02:53

System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions
Terminals :: Terminal Emulators/X TerminalsAbout: Thinstation is a mini
Linux distribution that enables you to convert standard PCs into
full-featured, diskless thin clients supporting all major connectivity
protocols like Ica, Windows terminal services (RDP), X, telnet, ssh, etc.
It can be booted from the network using Etherboot/PXE or from standard
media like floppy/CD/hd/flash-disk etc. The configuration is centralized
to simplify terminal management.

Changes: This version adds a fix for Samba (defines a local host), adds a
fix for the vncviewer package, fixes ts.bat causing the cramfs wrong
magic error in ts.bat, and updates loadlin to 1.6c.

[064] - Virtual Universe 0.41
  by Oxygenic (http://freshmeat.net/users/oxygenic/)
  Wednesday, November 5th 2003 06:18

Communications :: Chat
Games/Entertainment
Multimedia :: GraphicsAbout: The "Virtual Universe" is a 3D cyberspace
which offers more possibilities than just chat: it is a combination of the
Web, chat, and instant messaging within a realistic, three-dimensional
cyberspace. Here people can meet, interact with each other, and build
houses and whole worlds. The "Virtual Universe" is a virtual reality
environment which runs on top of the Internet.

Changes: Bugs have been fixed in the RWX model loader, and it now works
faster and consumes less memory. The OBJ file loader for Alias/Wavefronts'
Maya models has been completely rewritten and should now work with every
.obj model and every .mtl material library.

[065] - VSOFont 1.4
  by Ville Helin (http://freshmeat.net/users/vhelin/)
  Wednesday, November 5th 2003 11:34

Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D RenderingAbout: VSOFont is a small library
used to draw very simple and fast user-definable 2D vector fonts in OpenGL
applications. It was written after the author found GLUT's fonts to be too
expensive to render.

Changes: This release adds optimized 2D text writing functions and fixes a
few fatal bugs. The vertex arrays were optimized.

[066] - wv2 0.2
  by Werner Trobin (http://freshmeat.net/users/trobin/)
  Wednesday, November 5th 2003 06:20

Text Processing :: FiltersAbout: wv2 is a portable MS Word .doc import
filter. Currently, it supports MS Word 6, MS Word 95, MS Word 97, MS Word
2000, and MS Word 2002 (a.k.a XP) documents. Older versions like Word 2,
3, 4, and 5 aren't supported for now, but it's quite likely that they will
be supported at some point.

Changes: The target of this release was to have a polished wv2 version for
the upcoming KOffice 1.3 final. The most important bugfixes compared to
version 0.1.9 are list related. Word 8 compatibility lists are now
correctly handled, even if the document doesn't contain any native Word 8
lists. Additionally, the Word 6/7 list CRC sums are correctly calculated.
All other changes have insignificant impact for users.
