  Thursday, November 13th 2003 06:50

Security
System :: Systems Administration

About: afick is another file integrity checker, designed to be fast and
fully portable between Unix and Windows platforms. It works by first
creating a database that represents a snapshot of the most essential parts
of your computer system. You can then run the script to discover all
modifications made since the snapshot was taken (i.e. files added,
changed, or removed). The configuration syntax is very close to that of
aide or tripwire, and a graphical interface is provided.

Changes: The exit status now depends upon the detected changes. afick now
controls itself (binaries, config file, database).

[027] - Figaro's Password Manager 0.58
  by John Conneely (http://freshmeat.net/users/dolphin26/)
  Thursday, November 13th 2003 12:14

Security :: Cryptography

About: Figaro's Password Manager (FPM) is a GNOME application that allows
you to securely store your passwords, which are encrypted with the
blowfish algorithm. It allows you to copy passwords or usernames to the
clipboard or primary selection. If a password is for a Web site, FPM can
keep track of the URLs of your login screens and can automatically launch
your browser. You can also teach FPM to launch other applications. FPM can
sort your passwords into categories. Finally, it has a password generator
that can help you choose good passwords.

Changes: This release has a fix for corrupted password files when you
change the passcode, export to plaintext functionality, a change in the
maximum password length from 24 to 255 characters, an import function, and
fixes for some other small bugs.

user to find and select waypoints (airports, navigational aids, and
fixes), then calculates distances, courses, wind corrections, and times.
Information about the waypoints is provided (including frequencies,
elevation, fuel availability, and runway descriptions). The route data
is also used to fill in an editable FAA Flight Plan form. FlyWay has an
X11 GUI based on the PyQt library.

Changes: The waypoint database has been updated, and cursor changes were
added to indicate time consuming operations. Also, a Linux/Unix install

[029] - G Pascal 0.0.8
  by Michael R Gibson (http://freshmeat.net/users/MichaelRGibson/)
  Thursday, November 13th 2003 13:52

About: G Pascal is a scripting version of Pascal. It is an interpreter,
not a compiler; it is based primarily on UCSD Pascal and tries to adhere
to strict guideline standards. Some alternative exceptions are made for
convenience, but the standard way of coding is always maintained.

Changes: The compile script has been tweaked to work with the new code. An
rmdir() function has been added. A FILE.IOResult system variable has been
added. unlink() now returns FILE.IOResult. unlink() will now take variable
names. FILE.info is assigned as an integer. This fixes a bug where if the
first var defined was a 'text' file, other variables would not print in
the second argument of write() and writeln(). get_system() Fedora Linux
support has been added. Space/parsing problems before and after variables
in write(), writeln(), concat(), and insert() have been fixed. Real number
addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication have been fixed.

About: Informant is a set of utilities for keeping a user informed of
events. It consists of an informant, which is the means by which the user
is alerted to the occurrence of the said event, and a number of sources
that "whisper" an alert to the informant when the event occurs.
Currently, the informant is implemented as a GNOME panel applet or a
stand alone GTK program. When an alert has been whispered by a source,
the text of the applet or GTK program changes from "No alerts" to "New
Alerts". The user can click on the text and a window will pop up
containing a list of the alerts received and the time they were received.
The sources provided are the original CVSToys source, an email filter
source and a daemonized version of it, an RSS feed source (relying on
TouRSSt), a Web page change monitoring source, and a simple command line
source that can be called from anything else.

[039] - Java Serialization to XML 2.1.4 (JSX 2)
  by Brendan Macmillan (http://freshmeat.net/users/yow/)
  Thursday, November 13th 2003 23:26

Communications
Database
Software Development

About: Java Serialization to XML (JSX) allows you to write and read any
Java object graph as XML data with one line of code. You can verify your
data and manipulate it with standard XML tools like DOM, JDOM, and XSLT.
JSX automatically creates a file format/wire protocol for all Java
objects, so that it is always up to date as the code evolves. When you
need backward compatibility, JSX provides the evolution techniques of Java
Object Serialization, and you can also modify the XML directly. Unlike
databinders, such as JAXB and Castor, no explicit mapping is required, and
JSX works for all objects.

Changes: This version includes an XML schema of the XML format for all
classes serialized with JSX. A walk-through for using a memento to change
the representation of Java classes was added.

About: NoMachine NX is a remote desktop system based on the X11 protocol.
It provides a suite of libraries and X11 proxying agents implementing
efficient compression and optimized transport of X11, HTTP, SMB, and

and embedding RFB and RDP in X protocol, it is also able to compress VNC
and Windows Terminal Service sessions.

Changes: This is the last beta of the 1.3.0 series. Binary packages are
available for all the supported platforms. Two very welcome features are
included not originally planned for this release. NX virtual desktops can
now leverage the eye-candy of font antialiasing and alpha-blending. XFT
and fontconfig2 are fully supported. This simplifies system administration
by letting clients use server-side fonts. NX will use the MIT-SHM
extension when available. This offers a boost on X11 desktops making heavy
use of pixmaps or running RDP or VNC sessions.

also triggers the email alert mechanism, which sends mail to one or more
persons with the details of what's going on.

Changes: Sending of email messages is now possible without an MTA on the
host. The Perl sendEmail program is now used to send messages. Please note
that the upcoming sendEmail version has incompatible options. raidmon uses
the new options, so you should use the provided patched sendEmail RPM
(downloadable from the sendemail directory).

[061] - S tar 1.5a34 (Development)
  by Jörg Schilling (http://freshmeat.net/users/schily/)
  Thursday, November 13th 2003 03:01

System :: Archiving
System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Compression

About: Star is a very fast, POSIX-compliant tar archiver. It reads and
writes POSIX compliant tar archives as well as non-POSIX GNU tar archives.
Star is the first free POSIX.1-2001 compliant tar implementation. It saves
many files together into a single tape or disk archive, and can restore
individual files from the archive. It includes command line interfaces for
the "tar", "Sun-Tar", "cpio", "pax" and "gnutar" cmdline syntax. It
includes a FIFO for speed, a pattern matcher, multi-volume support, the
ability to archive sparse files and ACLs, the ability to archive extended
file flags, automatic archive format detection, automatic byte order
recognition, automatic archive compression/decompression, remote archives,
and special features that allow star to be used for full and incremental
backups. It includes the only known platform independent "rmt" server
program that hides Linux incompatibilities. The "rmt" server from the star
package implements all Sun/GNU/Schily/BSD enhancements and allows any
"rmt" client from any OS to contact any OS as server.

Changes: Multi volume continuation headers (that allow to skip rests of
split files when starting past volume #1) now are implemented for the
default FIFO case. Recognition of 'packed' archives was fixed.
Auto-decompression support was added for 'pkzip' archives. There is a new
option -print-artype that prints compression and archive type. A new
option artype=headertype, as an alias for H=headertype, has been
introduced because -H has been defined otherwise by POSIX.1-2001. A bug
with chdir() in the copy mode was fixed, as was a bug that caused star
to reject files > tape volume size set by tsize= even with -multivol
active.

  by Douglas Gilbert (http://freshmeat.net/users/dpgilbert/)
  Thursday, November 13th 2003 07:08

About: The sg_utils package includes variants of the Unix dd command
called sg_dd and sgp_dd that speed copies to, from, and between SCSI disks
and CDROMs. sg_map and sg_scan supply information about SCSI devices and
how they are related to other drivers. There are utilities for timing and
testing SCSI devices and the SCSI bus. The sg3_utils package is for the
Linux 2.4 series, while sg_utils is for the 2.2 series with some support
for the 2.0 series.

Changes: sginfo (derived from scsiinfo) was reworked so it can access (and
modify) modern SCSI mode pages (as found in SPC-3 and SBC-2). sg_dd,
sgm_dd, and sgp_dd were made capable of reading and writing to very large
stores (8 byte logical block addresses).

About: uClibc (µClibc) is a C library for developing embedded Linux
systems. It is much smaller then the GNU C Library, but nearly all
applications supported by glibc also work perfectly with uClibc. Porting
applications from glibc to uClibc typically involves just recompiling the
source code. uClibc even supports shared libraries and threading. It
currently runs on standard Linux and MMU-less Linux (also known as
µClinux) systems with support for ARM, i386, h8300, m68k, MIPS, mipsel,
PowerPC, SH, SPARC, and v850 processors.
