Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Office/Business

About: 123tkShop is an e-Business framework which allows small companies
like giftshops, boutiques, bookshops, etc. to set up their own e-Commerce
webshops without knowledge of any programming languages. Maintainance is
done over an integrated Web interface. 123tkShop provides plugin-based
extensibility for multiple languages and themes. The admin interface
allows backups of database and table structures, and backups of the
complete database with all data. An "Auto-Plugin-Detection" system makes
it easy to develop and install new plugins.

Changes: Bugs have been fixed. TKSESSION has some new functions. A new
add-on structure has been added to 123tkShop which makes it easier to
write new functions or install downloadable add-ons.

System :: Software Distribution

About: The superb Debian package installer APT has since some time become
available for RPM-based distributions. However, to install RPM packages
with apt, an apt repository is needed. apt4rpm creates the apt repository
from an RPM repository. The rpm repository can be located locally or
remotely. Once the apt repository has been created with apt4rpm, the apt
tools can be used to install RPMs.

Changes: A buffer overflow bug seen if the APT repository is stored on a

Education
Education :: Testing
Games/Entertainment :: Puzzle Games

About: Asymptopia Crossword Builder is a JavaScript application. A robust
GUI allows users to submit arbitrary length lists of key-hint pairs which
can be regenerated an unlimited number of times until the user wants to
accept the layout. The dhtml interface provides a configuration panel,
key- generating panel (i.e. answer sheet), puzzle-generating panel (blank
squares with numbers for accross/down), and an across-down-hints panel
which generates the text hints and numerical location on the puzzle. It
includes support for hyphenated words, and an example file demonstrating
how you can produce math crosswords.

Changes: A toggle for allowing the placement algorithm to place
unconnected words is provided on the "generator" panel. The intent is that
more fitting options will be available if the algorithm gets stuck, and
usually the unconnected submission gets connected later. In the interest
of speed, the online copy has moved to Sourceforge.

[016] - DKMS 0.99.01
  by lerhaupt (http://freshmeat.net/users/lerhaupt/)
  Friday, November 21st 2003 14:42

System :: Systems Administration

About: DKMS (Dynamic Kernel Module Support) is a framework where device
driver source can reside outside the kernel source tree so that it is very
easy to rebuild modules as you upgrade kernels. This allows Linux vendors
to provide driver drops without having to wait for new kernel releases (as
a stopgap before the code can make it back into the kernel), while also
taking out the guesswork for customers attempting to recompile modules for
new kernels. For veteran Linux users it also provides some advantages
since a separate framework for driver drops will remove kernel releases as
a blocking mechanism for distributing code.

Changes: This release has the version bumped to 0.99 to convey impending
1.00 release status. A MODULES_CONF_OBSOLETE_ONLY[#] directive array is
available in dkms.conf. This array, when set to "yes", informs DKMS to
only modify /etc/modules.conf if it finds an obsolete reference within it
as specified in the MODULES_CONF_OBSOLETES[#] array. This release will
only bother to remove /etc/modules.conf entries during an uninstall if
REMAKE_INITRD is set, or if you are uninstalling your module from the last
kernel that it is installed on.

  Friday, November 21st 2003 14:44

System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: dobackup.pl is a flexible Perl script to handle unattended
incremental backups of multiple servers. It handles multiple media sets
with automatic media preparation and rotation, configurable
'what-to-backup', global per-host exclusion patterns, and user settable
'don't-back-this-up' metafiles. Its design goal is zero-maintenance,
nothing to do except change the media when told.

Changes: This release fixes a couple of minor bugs in the ejection code,
and improves the error logging included in the email report after a failed
backup. All packages now include GPG signatures. RPM now requires the Perl
module Config::IniFiles.

Software Development :: Documentation

About: Doxygen is a cross-platform, JavaDoc-like documentation system for
C++, C, C#, Java, IDL, and PHP. Doxygen can be used to generate an on-line

RTF) from a set of source files. Doxygen can also be configured to extract
the code-structure from undocumented source files. This includes
dependency graphs, class diagrams and hyperlinked source code. This type
of information can be very useful to quickly find your way in large source
distributions.

Changes: Dot images are now regenerated only if they change. Support for
parsing pre-ANSI K&R style C code was added. Some minor enhancements to
the XML output were made. The source code is now searchable via the new

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: File cache class is a PHP Class that can cache arbitrary data in
files in order to reduce the time necessary to regenerate pages or other
types of data that do not change every time they are requested. It
features safe locking of cache files to avoid data corruption caused by
simultaneous accesses during cache file updates, portable locking schemes,
and the ability to set a cache expiry date or timeout period. Cache files
can store user-defined headers besides the cached data, and also standard
headers used in HTTP like content-length:, date:, expires:, etag:, etc. It
has been tested under Linux, SunOS and Windows.

Changes: This release implements a function, "updating", that determines
if the cache is currently locked for update by a concurrent process, or
if the cache is available for reading or updating. A simple example of
usage of the class is also provided.

[043] - Linux Bandwidth Arbitrator 7.25
  by astormchaser (http://freshmeat.net/users/astormchaser/)
  Friday, November 21st 2003 14:45

System :: Networking
System :: Systems Administration

About: Linux Bandwidth Arbitrator allows beginning-to-advanced network
administrators to control bandwidth. It is designed to be completely
turn-key in its default configuration. You just plug it into your network
trunk, and it self configures and immediately starts slowing "bandwidth
hogs". It can be configured to target specific applications such as Kazaa,
IMAP, and POP. It also comes with denial of service protection and a
special reservation system for voice and video traffic QOS.

Changes: This release stabilizes the 7.0 beta that introduced shaping for
uplink and downlink. It has fixes for problems with the accuracy of
setting separate limits for downlink/uplink by host. It also fixes the
content filtering feature, which had been disabled in prior releases due
to a reliability problem. It fixes a problem with turning the default
rules off. Turning the default rules off turns off the background shaping
so that only your custom limits will be in effect.

[057] - S tar 1.5a35 (Development)

  Friday, November 21st 2003 03:25

System :: Archiving
System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Compression

About: Star is a very fast, POSIX-compliant tar archiver. It reads and
writes POSIX compliant tar archives as well as non-POSIX GNU tar archives.
Star is the first free POSIX.1-2001 compliant tar implementation. It saves
many files together into a single tape or disk archive, and can restore
individual files from the archive. It includes command line interfaces for
the "tar", "Sun-Tar", "cpio", "pax" and "gnutar" cmdline syntax. It
includes a FIFO for speed, a pattern matcher, multi-volume support, the
ability to archive sparse files and ACLs, the ability to archive extended
file flags, automatic archive format detection, automatic byte order
recognition, automatic archive compression/decompression, remote archives,
and special features that allow star to be used for full and incremental
backups. It includes the only known platform independent "rmt" server
program that hides Linux incompatibilities. The "rmt" server from the star
package implements all Sun/GNU/Schily/BSD enhancements and allows any
"rmt" client from any OS to contact any OS as server.

Changes: This version fixes a 'ustar' file name handling bug introduced
with CPIO support in 1.5a22 that caused star to create star-specific
vendor unique extensions for unsplittable files <= 256 characters instead
of skipping them. Now only exactly one error message is printed for file
names that cannot be archived. It also fixes a bug introduced with 1.5a31
with star -dump that may have caused broken "SCHILY.dino" inode entries
to be written; this bug breaks incremental dumps and causes Syntax error
messages to be printed in extract mode.

Information Management :: Issue Tracking
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: "School Tools for Online Resource Management" is designed to aid
schools in moving away from pedestrian systems of managing IT facilities
and resources. The target audience is a school, but other environments,
such as small businesses, could easily make use of the tools. The project
is a suite of PHP Web pages that use a MySQL backend. The project is
divided into various modules, each with a different focus, such as support
request tracking, resource booking, etc.

Changes: The way in which usernames and passwords are validated on login
has been changed, in order that MS SQL servers may be slightly less
problematic to work with.

[059] - SecureServ 1.0
  by Justin (http://freshmeat.net/users/fishwaldo/)
  Friday, November 21st 2003 09:29

Communications :: Chat :: Internet Relay Chat
Security

About: SecureServ is an IRC trojan detector. It's much like a virus
scanner, but aimed at IRC networks. Using several methods, including
version checks, behavior analysis, and general pattern matching, it aims
to detect trojans, viruses, and floodbots which connect to your IRC
network. Its "brains" are based on a "Definition file" which contains
information on how to detect trojans. To update detection for new trojans,
you only have to download a new file.

Changes: IRC administrators can now maintain their own definitions file.
Help text has been cleaned up. Onjoin bots now have a random version reply
to look more like real users, and onjoin bots will not check channels that
are already monitored with a monbot. There is updated documentation and
many bugfixes for existing code.

[060] - SIP Express Router 0.8.12
  by Jan Janak (http://freshmeat.net/users/janakj2/)
  Friday, November 21st 2003 10:01

Communications
Communications :: Conferencing
Communications :: Internet Phone

About: SER or SIP Express Router is a very fast and flexible SIP (RFC3621)
server. Written entirely in C, it can handle thousands of calls per second
on low-budget hadware. A C shell-like scripting language provides full
control over the server's behaviour. Its modular architecture allows only
required functionality to be loaded. The following modules are available:
digest authentication, CPL scripts, instant messaging, MySQL support, a
presence agent, Radius authentication, record routing, an SMS gateway, a
Jabber gateway, a transaction module, a registrar, and user location.

Changes: This release adds a new subst function in the textops module, a
new commandline option for checking the configuration file, and extended
operator support in the configuration file. The new commands
set_advertised_address and set_advertised_port can be used to control what
IP address will be printed in SIP messages (useful for NAT traversal). The
Remote-Party-ID value can now be stored in the database (in addition to
the radius server). The permissions of the FIFO interface are now more
restrictive. Some minor bugs in different modules have been fixed.

System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions

About: slapt-get is an APT-like system for Slackware package management.
It allows you to search Slackware mirrors and third-party package sources
(such as www.linuxpackages.net) for packages, compare them with installed
packages, and install new packages or upgrade installed packages, all with
a few simple commands.

Changes: This release updates the package version comparison routine,
fixes another occurrence of the URL malformed bug, and has more internal
updates for libslapt.

[062] - Sophster 0.9.2
  by Steven Schaefer (http://freshmeat.net/users/mathews20/)
  Friday, November 21st 2003 14:41

Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: Sophster is an HTTP server that provides access to the Linux
server it's running on. It requires authentication and then takes on the
user and group ID of the credentials. File and folder access is then
limited by the user and group ID. It features file upload/download, file/
folder delete, move, copy, and rename, basic text editing, creation of
files and folders, and the ability to set permissions and user/group
ownership of files/folders.

Changes: This release has been compiled with support for a user
authentication filter. An issue where requests to move files between
partitions were ignored has been corrected. There is a subtle performance
gain due to fewer string length calculations. The ability to alter the
last accessed and last modified time stamps has been added. The logic has
been changed to add a hyperlink for the change user ownership link
regardless of the user browsing. Support has been added for OpenSSL.

  Friday, November 21st 2003 09:31

Software Development :: Version Control

About: SVN::Web provides a Web interface to Subversion repositories. You
can browse the tree, view history of a directory or a file, see what's
changed in a specific revision, track changes with RSS, and also view
diffs. It also tracks the branching feature (node copy) of Subversion,
so you can easily see the relationship between branches.

Changes: This release adds a fix for RSS links to revisions under
mod_perl, miscellaneous fixes, and an API catch-up.

[064] - The Nice programming language 0.9.4 (Development)
  by Daniel Bonniot (http://freshmeat.net/users/bonniot/)
  Friday, November 21st 2003 03:27

Software Development :: Compilers

About: Nice is a new object-oriented programming language based on Java.
It incorporates features from functional programming, and puts into
practice state-of-the-art results from academic research. Among the
advanced features: parametric types, anonymous functions, multi-methods,
tuples, optional parameters to methods, design by contract, detection of
many errors during compilation (in particular, concerning casts and null
references). This results in more expressivity, modularity, and type
safety.

Changes: This release provides source-level debugging support for recent
debuggers that implement jsr 45. It also adds several features, like more
flexible typing of parametric classes, efficiency improvements for some
anonymous functions, and fixes for a few important bugs.

[065] - Trackballs 0.9.2
  by Mathias Broxvall (http://freshmeat.net/users/mbrx/)
  Friday, November 21st 2003 09:30

Games/Entertainment :: Arcade

About: Trackballs is a simple game similar to the classic game Marble
Madness. By steering a marble through a track filled with vicious hammers,
pools of acid, and other obstacles the player collects points. When the
ball reaches the destination, the player continue to the next, more
difficult track - unless, of course, time runs out first.

Changes: This release adds initial joystick support and some new sound
effects, and a new setting for 32bit color depth. It replaces some TTF
fonts with textured ones for faster rendering, and fixes some other small
bugs.
