Software Development :: Libraries
About: Botan is a library of cryptographic algorithms written in C++. It
includes a wide selection of block and stream ciphers, public key
algorithms, hash functions, and message authentication codes. It has an
easy-to-use filter interface and supports many common industry standards,
including X.509v3.
Changes: The handling of ASN.1 character strings has been significantly
improved. Porting to non-ASCII systems should be much easier, thanks to
the centralization of character set information. Several bugs in the
BER/DER code were fixed, and support for QNX has been added. Some initial
work on FIPS 140-2 requirements has been done.

[006] - Captive 1.1.1.2
by Jan Kratochvil (http://freshmeat.net/users/kratochvil/)
Sunday, November 30th 2003 07:42
System :: Filesystems
About: Captive provides full read/write access to NTFS disk drives in the
WINE way by using the original Microsoft Windows ntfs.sys driver. It
emulates the required subsystems of the Microsoft Windows kernel by
reusing one of the original ntoskrnl.exe, ReactOS parts, or this project's
own reimplementations on a case by case basis. Involvement of the original
driver files was chosen to achieve the best and unprecedented filesystem
compatibility and safety.
Changes: Some types of NTFS disk drives are no longer refused for
filesystem operations. Mounted partitions now have public reading
file/directory permissions. The set of MS-Windows XP drivers identified as
compatible with Captive has been extended, and this release also covers
the MS-Windows XP kernels compatibility for Microsoft SMP/PA kernels.

[008] - CRM114 Discriminator 20031129-RC11
by Crah the Merciless (http://freshmeat.net/users/wsymerlcom/)

Communications :: Email
System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring
About: CRM114 is a Controllable Regex Mutilator and Smart Filter, designed
for easy creation of filters for things like incoming email redirection,
spam filtering, system logs, or monitoring processes. Filtering rules can
be either hard-coded (such as regexes), soft-coded (calculated at runtime
or read from an external file or process), or learned dynamically by
phrase matching (by SBPH hashing). This makes it possible to create very
accurate filters with very little actual work. Accuracies over 99.9% are
achievable.
Changes: The few remaining non-critical bugs have been dealt with; no
remaining bugs rate higher than a P4. This version uses the new 0.6.2 TRE
regex engine, and so includes approximate matching. '\' escape handling
has been improved, and most escapes are now unnecessary. The embedded
algebraic/RPN math system is improved; it can compare string lengths, do
math, etc. This version also includes an improved "pad.crm" application
that is a useful associative-memory program (consider it a
meta-address-book for any type of textual data).

Sunday, November 30th 2003 03:49
Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office
About: Elm 2.4ME+ is based on Elm 2.4. It contains enhanced MIME and
character set support. It can read mail from POP or IMAP folders and can
pass mail to the PGP or GPG programs. It can also view digests as a
mailbox and reassemble fragmented (message/partial) messages. It includes
modules for TLS/SSL, iconv, and SMTP.
Changes: This patch addresses a panic when the IMAP server disconnected
during the password prompt, fixes initialization of internal-mailcaps and
metamail-mailcaps elmrc options, and fixes some cases where error
messages were not visible because of the exiting of Elm ME+. Security
fixes introduced in PL109S (25) are included.

[017] - gentoo 0.11.44
by Emil Brink (http://freshmeat.net/users/emilbrink/)
Sunday, November 30th 2003 08:38
Desktop Environment :: File Managers
About: gentoo is a file manager written in C. It uses the GTK+ toolkit,
and the two-pane concept, somewhat inspired by DOpus. gentoo strives to be
very configurable, and also to let you do all configuration from a GUI
within the program itself. Using advanced file typing and styling systems,
gentoo determines how to display files in its listings, and also how to
act on them. The package includes a set of over 120 unique handcrafted
icons, for many different types of files.
Changes: The way that gentoo deals with overwrites in almost all file
operations was overhauled, and should be much better, more powerful, and
more consistent now. Symlink copying was dumbed-down, since it was trying
too hard and ended up being confusing. Problems working with directories
containing colon and apostrophe characters should be gone now. A bug that
allowed both panes to have a focused row simultaneously was fixed. Various
other fixes were made.

Security :: Cryptography
System :: Logging
About: grsecurity is a complete security system for Linux 2.4 that
implements a detection/prevention/containment strategy. It prevents most
forms of address space modification, confines programs with least
privilege via its process-based MAC system, hardens syscalls, provides
full-featured auditing, and implements many of the OpenBSD randomness
features. It was written for performance, ease-of-use, and security. The
MAC system has an intelligent learning-mode, and all of grsecurity
supports a feature that logs the IP of the attacker that causes an alert
or audit.
Changes: Changes in this release include documentation updates,
performance enhancements, an initrd bugfix, and PaX updates including
PT_GNU_STACK and PT_GNU_HEAP support. grsecurity 1.9.13 is for the 2.4.23
kernel, and gradm has been updated for this release.

About: gtkpod is a platform-independent GUI for Apple's iPod using GTK 2.
It allows you to import your existing iTunes database, add/delete
songs/playlists, edit ID3 tags, modify the iTunes database without having
the iPod connected, and synchronize at a later time. It also features
international charset support for ID3 tags, detects when adding already
existing songs, and more.
Changes: New features in this release are support of (unprotected) AAC
files (.m4a files) and an info window showing some statistics about your
iPod contents. The other changes are mainly small improvements with large
practical impact. For instance, "Add Tracks" can now be used to quickly
sync directories, the extended information file won't be voided when using
other programs to upload to the iPod, the "year" tag is fully supported,
and "track/tracks" as well as "disk/disks" tag formats are recognized.

About: IzSound is a C++/STL stream-oriented sound processing library. It

Changes: The Doxygen file has been updated (doxygen -u doxyfile). In
LibAOOutput, the driver can now be autodetected when passing 0 as the
driver string. Flanger now flushes its internal buffers when one of them
becomes empty. A segfault-prone bug was fixed. The configure script does

into features and allows those features to be tied together independently,
creating test cases. These automated test cases can then be data-driven
and executed against different environments. The goal is to create an
automated testing tool that can be used for the enterprise. A UI that ties
a series of features to a test case, generating both the test script and
the test case documentation is in the works.
Changes: This release adds a feature that auto-generates the test case
documentation based on the automation script, a generic JUnit plug-in for
integration testing, and even more very helpful information in the test
results. Many other minor features and bugfixes are also included in this
release.

[028] - java.sql.ResultSet DOM Wrapper 1.0rc-2
by Tal Rotbart (http://freshmeat.net/users/Opiuman/)
Sunday, November 30th 2003 16:55
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
Text Processing :: Markup :: XSL/XSLT
About: The java.sql.ResultSet DOM Wrapper implements the Java DOM
interface to represent a JDBC result-set. The resulting ResultSetDocument
does not contain the actual result-set data and meta-data, but instead
contains references to row and column indices. Because of this, it is very
memory efficient, but it requires that the result-set be created with
"scroll" capabilities. The wrapper is read-only, but since it implements
the standard interfaces, it allows the use of transformers such as Xalan
to perform XSLT transformation and XPath queries on the SQL result-set.
Changes: The ability to clear the result-set wrapper for garbage
collection has been added. There is a small compatibility fix to allow for
an old version of Xalan which choked on a null return from getNodeValue().
It returns an empty string instead. So far, there are no known bugs. This
wrapper has been used in a production heavy environment for the last
month.

[029] - JCalendar 0.75
by troggan (http://freshmeat.net/users/troggan/)
Sunday, November 30th 2003 13:55
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: The JCalendar library is a set of Java classes that provides a
ComboBox (JCalendarComboBox) for selecting a Date and a simple Panel
(JCalendarPanel) for showing and editing a Date. It was written with two
rules in mind. The first is to use the current Look and Feel instead of
hard-coded Fonts or Colors. The second is to use the default or a given
Locale for determining such values as the start of week and names of days
and months instead of hard-coded locale behavior.
Changes: This release adds a new JCalendarDialog class and language
support for Portuguese, Italian, and the Netherlands. If JCalendarComboBox
was reused, the Ancestor was wrong. Pressing the button while JCalendar
was open became confused under some circumstances.

turn-key in its default configuration. You just plug it into your network
trunk, and it self configures and immediately starts slowing "bandwidth
hogs". It can be configured to target specific applications such as Kazaa,
IMAP, and POP. It also comes with denial of service protection and a
special reservation system for voice and video traffic QOS.
Changes: The administrative GUI has been completely revamped with a new
professional look and feel. The new QOS GUI provides a live real time
