Internet
System :: Operating System

About: 1060 NetKernel SE is an XML Application Server for REST Web
services. It is based on a modular REST microkernel architecture. It
supports over 70 XML technologes, which may be combined into applications
and services ranging from traditional Web CMSs to EAI XML integration. All
component services are URI addressable, encapsulated behind public/private
URI address spaces.

Changes: Web-based control panel services were added, including a module
install wizard with auto-discovery of docs/entrypoints. New XML modules
include XForms, XML-to-RDBMS, and a spec compliant XQuery. There are new
accessors for service invocation, cache dependency threading, SQL, XHTML,
image processing, and more. The microkernel was updated to version 2.2,
and supports hot module deployment, hot restart, load management, runtime
reconfiguration, and memory and performance optimizations. The Dev Kit
provides full documentation, trailmaps, demonstrations, developer wizards,
and tools.

  by Simon Kelley (http://freshmeat.net/users/simonkelley/)
  Thursday, January 29th 2004 10:26

Internet :: Name Service (DNS)

About: Dnsmasq is a lightweight, easy to configure DNS forwarder and DHCP
server. It is designed to provide DNS and (optionally) DHCP to a small
network. It can serve the names of local machines which are not in the
global DNS. The DHCP server integrates with the DNS server and allows
machines with DHCP-allocated addresses to appear in the DNS with names
configured either in each host or in a central configuration file. Dnsmasq
supports static and dynamic DHCP leases and BOOTP for network booting of
diskless machines.

Changes: This release includes a fairly large set of mainly minor bugfixes
and usability enhancements, almost all in the new DHCP code. The
documentation on setting up the DHCP function has been significantly
expanded and bugfixed. This release also fixes building on FreeBSD, and a
crash which showed up on Linux 2.6.x kernels which have IPv6 enabled.

  Thursday, January 29th 2004 09:11

System
Utilities

About: EvRouter reads events from the Linux input layer, and acts on them
according to a user-specified set of rules. Currently, EvRouter can map
events to X11 key and button presses, XMMS commands, and it can also run
shell commands. EvRouter is intended to help legacy applications
understand modern events such as mouse wheel movement and special keys on
keyboards. It also offers hotkey-like functions, and can help existing
modern applications deal with events that, for one reason or another, X11
is unaware of (as long as they are accessible through a Linux event
device).

Changes: This release can only read input from the Linux event interface.
It can dispatch events via the XTest extension (X keys and buttons),
execute shell commands, and control XMMS.

[024] - File Integrity Command & Control 1.2.1

  Thursday, January 29th 2004 19:08

System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: File Integrity Command & Control (FICC) helps system administrators
manage multiple Tripwire installations. It maintains MD5 hashes for three
key Tripwire files (the config file, executable, and TW database) for
every system it monitors. It then verifies that the MD5 checksum of these
key files against the signatures in its file checksum database. If all
signatures match those in the database, it then connects to the host via
SSH and runs Tripwire. If any of the signatures do not match those in the
database or Tripwire detects file system changes, an email is sent to the
"FICC administrator" of the system in question.

Changes: This release is mostly an update to documentation. There are no
new features or bugfixes. It contains an update to the updateDB script so
it now honors the "quick_check" configuration option, reducing bandwidth
usage. It includes a contrib/ directory with a script that makes it easier
to update the FICC host DB from a FICC target.

  Thursday, January 29th 2004 10:28

Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: IlohaMail is a lightweight, multilingual Webmail client that is
easy to use and install. It runs on a stock build of PHP, and does not
require databases (although database support is available) or the IMAP
library (it is powered by a custom IMAP/POP3 library). It also includes
basic PIM-like features, including a calendar/scheduler, a full fledged
contacts manager, and a bookmarks manager.

Changes: This version fixes a crippling bug that stripped, instead of
filtered, input on systems with PHP's magic_quotes_gpc turned off. A bug
where messages were not sent to BCC recipients when using PHP's mail()
function (instead of the built-in SMTP library) has also been fixed. This
release also includes updates to a few translations, as well as other
minor bugfixes.

About: Kandid is a system to evolve graphics. Graphics, in Kandid, are not
drawn by hand. Instead, new forms can be found using genetic algorithms.
To achieve this aim Kandid simulates evolution using sexual reproduction
and mutation. But there is no fitness function inside the program. Only
the user can decide what images are interesting. Populations and genes can
be stored in XML format. Image calculation is based on Iterated Function
Systems, Linear Cellular Automata, and Voroni diagrams.

Changes: New in this version are expressions based on vector calculations,
to produce images using the hue, saturation, and brightness color model.

About: The Linux Video Project attempts to create a live-DVD (CDs are too
small) which boots on any x86 system, initializes its hardware (most
notably sound), and plays video on that system. It uses the ROCK Linux
Distribution Build Kit for building the live-system.

Changes: The live system was shrunk to 25MB without any loss of features,
making the use of LVP on CDs reasonable. Programs are now linked
statically to eliminate seeking for libraries, which costs a lot of time

  Thursday, January 29th 2004 10:30

Utilities

About: MultiTail lets you view one or multiple files like the original
tail program. The difference is that it creates multiple windows on your
console (with ncurses). Merging of 2 or more log files is possible. It can
also use colors while displaying the log files (through regular
expressions) for faster recognition of what is important. It can also
filter lines (again with regular expressions). It has interactive menus
for editing given regular expressions and deleting and adding windows. One
can also have windows with the output of shell scripts and other software.
When viewing the output of external software, MultiTail can mimic the
functionality of tools like 'watch'.

Changes: When using the normal 'tail' program, one can press enter a

  Thursday, January 29th 2004 08:01

Communications :: File Sharing
Security :: Cryptography

About: MUTE File Sharing is an anonymous, decentralized
search-and-download file sharing system. Several people have described
MUTE as the "third generation file sharing network" (From Napster to
Gnutella to MUTE, with each generation getting less centralized and more
anonymous). MUTE uses algorithms inspired by ant behavior to route all
messages, include file transfers, through a mesh network of neighbor
connections.

Changes: Static download timeouts have been replaced with dynamic timeouts
that adjust to the current transfer speed. This dramatically improves the
success rate for slower transfers and should eliminate most download
failure issues.

however, it validates documents against a number of grammars.

Changes: Two ways to use extension datatype libraries have been
implemented: either external program or built-in Scheme interpreter. These
allow the datatype-checking capabilities of Relax NG to be extended far
beyond the scope of XML Schema datatypes. RNV now parses external system
entities, as it was an omission not to implement this earlier. Memory
usage and diagnostics have been improved. The source code has been
rearranged again for better modularity.

[078] - Virtual Private Ethernet 1.5
  by Marc A. Lehmann (http://freshmeat.net/users/pcg1/)
  Thursday, January 29th 2004 16:21

Communications
Internet
System

About: VPE creates a virtual ethernet by creating host-to-host tunnels
between multiple endpoints. Unlike other virtual private "network"
solutions which merely create a single tunnel, it creates a real network
with multiple endpoints. It is designed to be very simple and easy to
setup. It can also be used to tunnel into some VPN network using a
variety of protocols. It is, however, primarily designed to sit on the
gateway machines of company branches to connect them together.

Changes: This release fixes a longstanding bug that affected routers only
and caused zeroing of queued control packets, resulting in harmless but
scary-looking error messages and slightly delayed connections between
hosts. It adds better error reporting when the node configuration is wrong
and updates the LZF code to 1.2. The protocol is unchanged.

[079] - Webmin 1.130
  by Jamie Cameron (http://freshmeat.net/users/jcameron/)
  Thursday, January 29th 2004 19:07

System :: Systems Administration

About: Webmin is a web-based interface for system administration for Unix.
Using any browser that supports tables and forms, you can setup user
accounts, internet services, DNS, file sharing and so on.

Changes: This version adds a Log File Rotation module, for configuring
logrotate, adds the ability to compress MySQL and PostgreSQL backups, and
includes the beginings of a new ui-lib.pl library for generating common
Webmin UI elements. The Disk Quotas module can now display in kilobytes
instead of blocks, on systems when the block size is known. There is
better MD5 encryption handling in the Users and Groups module, including
support for FreeBSD. The Users and Groups module now works out UIDs and
GIDs at creation time, rather than when the new user or group for is
displayed.
