BitlBee: IRC vs. Instant Messengers
by Vladi Belperchinov-Shabanski (http://freshmeat.net/~cade/)
Section: Project Reviews
Saturday, January 31st 2004 00:00
I like IRC. Actually, I like it very much. Usually, I start my XChat early
in the morning and keep it on a desktop nearly all day. It works quite
well for me, I can find my friends there for a chat, ask for help, or even
help someone else. Also, XChat (like other IRC clients) allows me to write
small plugins in Perl or Python to do various tasks like paging me on the
mobile phone when I'm away. IRC clients and all kinds of programs and
plugins surrounding them are well-deployed on nearly every platform.
Unfortunately, IRC is not enough to keep in touch with everyone.

[001] - 4tH compiler 3.4d (Development)
by HanSoft (http://freshmeat.net/users/hansoft/)
Saturday, January 31st 2004 13:49
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Libraries
About: 4tH is a Forth compiler with a little difference. Instead of the
standard Forth engine it features a conventional compiler. 4tH is a very
small compiler that can create bytecode, C-embeddable bytecode, standalone
executables, but also works fine as a scripting language. It supports over
85% of the ANS Forth CORE wordset and features conditional compilation,
pipes, files, assertions, forward declarations, recursion, include files,
etc. It comes with an RPN calculator, line editor, compiler, decompiler,
C-source generators, and a virtual machine.
Changes: The word IMMEDIATE has been added for portability purposes. The
words [INVERT] and WAIT have been removed due to portability problems. A
crude implementation of MS has been added to the library. Portability to
ANS-Forth has been restored by adding the appropriate library file.
General cleanup of all library files was done.

Text Processing
Text Processing :: Markup
About: AFT (Almost Free Text) is a document preparation system. It is
mostly free form, meaning that there is little intrusive markup; AFT
source documents look a lot like plain old ASCII text. It has a few rules
for structuring your document, more to do with formatting your text than
embedding lots of commands, and it produces all types of output (HTML,
XHTML, LaTeX, roll-your-own XML, etc.). All that needs to be done is to
edit a rule file. You can even customize your own rule files for
specialized output.
Changes: AFT now produces better-looking LaTeX and HTML.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: Asynchronous remote-script callback invocation (a.k.a. remote
scripting) is a technique by which ECMAScript code in a browser can
connect to a server without reloading a page. Remote callback invocation
allows you to create pages with sophisticated, dynamic features. ARSCIF is
a powerful framework that makes it trivial to use this technique. It helps
the developer by working out problems such as data and character encoding,
concurrency control, browser implementations, and so on.
Changes: ARSCIF now internally handles the quirks of PHP's "magic" quotes.
There is a new example showing how to build a pair of client/server
coroutines.

by Alexandru Dan Corlan (http://freshmeat.net/users/dcorlan/)
Saturday, January 31st 2004 13:54
Scientific/Engineering :: Astronomy
About: AVSOMAT is a project to automate the identification and photometry
of variable stars on CCD images. It consists of a Linux command which
takes as arguments the name of a fits image, and the name of an electronic
chart (another file) for the star supposedly on the image. It produces the
aavso observation report as a single line of text. Optionally, it can
produce a picture with the reference and the variable stars, as it thinks
it detected them, just for checking. The electronic chart is a file with
descriptions of the variable star, the reference stars, and guide stars
which are used to identify the field.
Changes: A scheduler of variable star observations was added which selects
lists of stars according to various criteria, optimizes telescope
movements from star to star, and generates a script for the GCX telescope
control program to obtain images of the stars in an automatic manner.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules
Software Development :: User Interfaces
Text Processing :: General
About: getargs is a Python module that implements a command line parser
that Python scripts can use to parse their command line arguments in
sys.argv. It is designed as a considerably more powerful and flexible
alternative to the standard getopt module. While supporting all features
provided by getopt, it also allows a command line option to take an
arbitrary number of arguments, permits switches (options without
arguments) and options with arguments to be interleaved on the command
line, and allows the developer to specify the maximum and minimum number
of arguments an option can take.
Changes: The parser will now (optionally) type-check arguments to an
option and return these in the specified type, rather than simply as
strings. Short-options can be 2-lettered. A given option can now have
multiple names (e.g., --block-size may be specified as synonymous to
--seg-size). A bug in the semantics of the "++" notation has been fixed.

[030] - libferris 1.1.15
by Ben Martin (http://freshmeat.net/users/monkeyiq/)
Saturday, January 31st 2004 12:06
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Filesystems
About: libferris is a virtual filesystem that exposes hierarchical data of
all kinds through a common C++ interface. Access to data is performed
using C++ IOStreams and Extended Attributes (EA) can be attached to each
datum to present metadata. Ferris uses a plugin API to read various data
sources and expose them as contexts and to generate interesting EA.
Current implementations include Native (kernel disk IO with event updates
using fam), xml (mount an xml file as a filesystem), edb (mount a berkeley
database), ffilter (mount an LDAP filter string) and mbox (mount your
mailbox). EA generators include image, audio, and animation decoders.
Changes: Some debug code in libcreationdbxml.cpp was commented out.
configure.in now fails if redland is not found. Ferris/libferrisperl.pm is
now in the tarball. Detection was improved for libpathan. Building the
dbxml plugin is only attempted when explicitly requested. The factory
libraries were moved into their own tree so that top level make works as
expected. A bug in DOM wrapper was fixed. A bug with "//" in URLs and lazy
loading in the file:// handler were fixed. The mysql plugin now ignores
hosts for which it doesn't have permission to connect. Context::isDir()
now delegates to overmount.

[032] - LinkChecker 1.12.0 (Stable)
by Bastian Kleineidam (http://freshmeat.net/users/calvin/)
Saturday, January 31st 2004 04:16
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management :: Link Checking
About: With LinkChecker, you can check HTML documents for broken links. It
features recursion, robots.txt exclusion protocol support, HTTP proxy
support, i18n support, multithreading, regular expression filtering rules
for links, and user/password checking for authorized pages. Output can be
colored or normal text, HTML, SQL, CSV, or a sitemap graph in GML or XML
format. Supported link types are HTTP/1.1 and 1.0, HTTPS, FTP, mailto:,
news:, nntp:, Gopher, Telnet, and local files.
Changes: This version resolves issues with backslashes in attributes and
missing quotes in the integrated HTML parser. Its HTTP check routines now
automatically fall back to GET requests when the initial HEAD request
produces an error. It fixes use of the -C cookie option, adds bash
auto-completion support for the command line script's options, and adds an
example cron script that can check links on a daily basis.

[034] - MailScanner 4.26.7
by Julian Field (http://freshmeat.net/users/jfield/)
Saturday, January 31st 2004 13:12
Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Filters
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: MailScanner is an email virus scanner, vulnerability protector, and
spam tagger. It supports the Postfix, Sendmail, Exim and ZMailer MTAs, and
the Sophos, McAfee, F-Prot, F-Secure, CommandAV, InoculateIT, Inoculan,
eTrust, Kaspersky, Nod32, AntiVir, BitDefender, RAV, Panda, DrWeb, and
Clam anti-virus scanners. It supports SpamAssassin for highly successful
spam identification. It is specifically designed to handle denial of
service attacks. It is very easy to install, and requires no changes at
all to your sendmail.cf file. It is designed to be lightweight, and won't
grind your mail system to a halt with its load; a good PC can process over
1.5 million messages per day. It can be integrated into any email system,
regardless of the software in use.
Changes: Each line in a ruleset can have 2 tests "ANDed" together.
Scheduled rebuilds of the Bayes database with full locking have been
added, so MailScanner won't timeout during the rebuild. Appearance of a
message on a "Spam List" can be used to modify the spam score, so users
with mail filters looking for the SpamScore header can easily match spam
that only appeared on a Spam List. The "notify" Spam Action has been added
so that users can be informed that they received a spam without actually
being able to see the spam message. This could be very useful in sites
that look after children.

About: Opag, which stands for "Option Parser Generator", is a program to
generate C code which parses command line options. It takes as input a
description of the command line options you want your program to support.
The output is a C function which finds these options in an array of
strings (typically "argv", the second parameter of the "main" function)
and sets variables accordingly. Short (single character) as well as long
(GNU style) options are supported. It is also possbile to associate a help

and reliability and an easy migration process from other solutions. A
special query language that is SQL-compliant and XML-capable has been
started to allow for easier migration from SQL-based solutions.
Changes: In this release, the object-oriented foundation has been fully
implemented and the QUERY.html document has been updated a lot. It's
expected that the next release is going to be a usable one.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
About: Thundaural Jukebox is a jukebox server and client designed for use
with touchscreen. It is an ideal replacement for a stationary stereo
system in a common area (lounge, pool room, bar, etc.). The server is
threaded and supports multiple playback devices. The interface to the
server is generic enough to support different kinds of clients, the
included client is just one possibility.
Changes: In this version, the checkdeps script also checks for SDL_perl's
dependencies. The server is now able to create a new database
automatically, and upgrade older versions of the schema if necessary. The
client and server can now run on different machines without loss of any
client functionality. Randomized play is now supported.

About: XQuark Fusion is an information integration engine for performing
real-time queries of multiple, heterogeneous, and distributed data
sources. Using XML-based data sources federation, it presents to
applications a single, uniform XML view of all business information, which
can then be queried with XQuery to produce XML documents. Accessible data
sources include relational databases (through the XQuark Bridge component)
and XML documents, and potentially much more, including Web Services,
XQuery-enabled data sources, and JCA connectors.
