System :: Archiving :: Mirroring
About: apt-got is a customizable mirror engine. It builds and supervises a
partial (or full) Debian mirror which is populated on-the-fly. It employs
several pluggable modules that are customized for specific jobs. There is

for customized mirroring algorithms. The engine is written in Java, and
the Apache module is written in C.
Changes: A rewrite of the high performance parts in NIO was commenced.
This release focused on the DownloadWatcher and introduced the use of MMAP
when applicable, reducing stress on the CPU and disk dramatically and
allowing for excellent delivery speeds.

Sunday, May 2nd 2004 04:59
Software Development :: Version Control
Software Development :: Version Control :: CVS
About: CVSNT was started as a port of cvs pserver for NT. It has since
been greatly improved and is now available under Windows and Unix/Linux.
Authentication may be done via all standard CVS protocols, plus
Windows-specific SSPI and Active Directory. Secure transport support is

integrated with the Win32 system. MergePoint processing means no more
tagging to merge. Atomic checkouts mean you always get the files you
wanted.
Changes: An option to pretend to be a Unix CVS server was added. When used
with the repository prefix, this improves compatibility with WSAD and
Eclipse. Extra unicode encodings are now available. All combinations of
UCS2/UTF16 with/without BOM are now catered for. Security fixes were made,
and modules2 support was added for more flexible modules, and paving the
way for true rename in future releases. This is a test feature currently
for those who are interested in the future development.

Database :: Front-Ends
Information Management :: Metadata/Semantic Models
About: The Gaudí Database Visual Editor is a Java application that allows
you to visually design the tables of a database using a JDBC 2.0 (or
higher) driver. It saves generated diagrams in XML format. It also
generates Java code that binds an object to a table from a database and
XML code for generating GUIs.
Changes: This release features enhanced support for foreign keys, nullable
fields, and check constraints. The generated code now allows you to work
in a plugable scheme, thus enabling simultaneous work with more then one
database from the same program. The ability to reverse engineer a given
database was extended to support nullable fields, default values, foreign
keys, and check constraints. Many minor enhancements were made to the

Sunday, May 2nd 2004 07:43
Desktop Environment :: File Managers
About: gentoo is a file manager written in C. It uses the GTK+ toolkit,
and the two-pane concept, somewhat inspired by DOpus. gentoo strives to be
very configurable, and also to let you do all configuration from a GUI
within the program itself. Using advanced file typing and styling systems,
gentoo determines how to display files in its listings, and also how to
act on them. The package includes a set of over 120 unique handcrafted
icons, for many different types of files.
Changes: Textviewer has better search, new keyboard accelerators, a
resizable window, and a plugged memory leak when searching. Binary-check
for file viewing tries a little bit less hard, which makes it better.
Storing of selections in directory history is now optional. FAM-triggered
directory rescanning now adjusts its maximum rate depending on how long
each rescan actually takes, which saves CPU in many cases.

[029] - IzPack 3.5.2 (Stable)

Sunday, May 2nd 2004 05:17
Software Development
System :: Installation/Setup
System :: Software Distribution
About: IzPack is a powerful Java installer builder. It is able to create
lightweight and modular installers. You have the choice of the installer
panels you want to use (some can do the same job, so that you can select
the one you prefer), and you even have the choice of the kind of installer
that you want to use. IzPack doesn't use any portion of native code, it is
designed to be fully independent from the operating system that runs it.
It is very easy for the end user with a properly installed JVM to use an
installer made with IzPack, since a single "java -jar installer.jar" will
launch it.
Changes: This release consisted of various bugfixes as well as
translations updates. Users are advised to upgrade to this release.

Text Processing :: Filters
About: pymavis is an email parser similar to the old amavis (or
amavis-perl). The primary goal is to retrieve all (even damaged, non-RFC
compliant) attachments from an email, and then run various virus scanners
over them. The reason is that the email parsing function of most virus
scanners is very limited (most can parse RFC-compliant messages only) or
broken. Also, other signs of viruses and other malware can be found, like
various MIME exploits or various tricks not found in normal legal email.
It does partial content checking, and currently knows how to list ZIP
files (and check filenames/sizes inside the zip, even if it's encrypted)
and EXE files (win32 PE files are parsed for DLL dependencies, so most
Internet worms can be detected without using any virus scanner). Some
heuristics are performed to distinguish between normal messages and
malware.
Changes: RAR archives and BinHex40 encoding are now supported. The .EXE
parser was improved for truncated files, and the weight of some MIME
errors was reduced to avoid some false positives. The filename checker was
split into two functions and now handles whitespace tricks and hidden file
extensions better.

Changes: A stupid nothing in ACL bug was fixed. Checks were split into two
methods: subnet_checks and acl_checks. An option to not have a ban_list in
non-default subnets was added so that you can just lock a room or block
method types. Some spelling mistakes were corrected. Get_config in the
subnet class and acl class now need an (int)size argument. More options
were added to soulC::get_config(blah) and an issue with cleaning the DB
when there was none created was fixed. A soul.conf file must now be
installed.

[075] - XML Catalog Manager 2.1 (2.x)
by Julio M. Merino Vidal (http://freshmeat.net/users/jmmv/)
Sunday, May 2nd 2004 05:21
Text Processing :: Markup
About: xmlcatmgr is a utility to manipulate XML and SGML catalogs. It is
designed to be simple and extremely lightweight. Its main purpose is to be
able to add and remove entries from catalogs, so it can be used from
package systems.
Changes: A -p flag for prepending new entries in catalog files instead of
appending them was added. The lookup action was modified to be consistent
across XML and SGML catalogs (i.e., it shows all matching entries when
running in XML mode, not just the first one). There were also several
bugfixes: an incorrect attribute specification in XML tags was fixed, a
warning message that printed strings in the wrong order was fixed, some
compilation warnings with -O2 and glibc were corrected, and some typos in
the manual were corrected.
