[001] - 3rd Edition Dungeons & Dragons Character Generator 1.9
by Slicer (http://freshmeat.net/users/slicer/)
Fri, Jul 23rd 2004 15:46
Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing
About: 3rd Edition Dungeons and Dragons Character Generator is an
HTML/JavaScript Web page that allows the user to quickly and easily create
new Dungeons and Dragons characters. The characters can be of any of the
eleven classes, any of the playable races, and may start at any level from
1 to 220. Generation requires some simple input, after which the character
is displayed on a basic character sheet. It allows you to select your
starting stats, add ability points, and pick skills, equipment, feats, and
spells. It runs on most operating systems with most modern browsers.
Changes: Racial bonuses for halflings and gnomes have been fixed. They
were not getting their size bonuses to base attack and armor class.

Desktop Environment
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Playing
Office/Business
About: AntiRight is a lightweight and scripted desktop environment which
uses the Motif toolkit. Development is carried out with a minimalistic
philosophy in mind. The software consists of a text editor/viewer, a
desktop panel, a sticky note utility, system management panels, a file
manager, a calculator interface, a color/background selector, a command
launcher, a simple help system, an email and Web browser launcher, a theme
selector, a preferences utility, and a CD player. The desktop panel
consists of a launcher panel button, a screen lock button, 8 virtual
desktop buttons, an alarm utility, a command launcher, a clock, a user
counter, a load meter, and a mail checker.
Changes: The label formatting code was rewritten in C, greatly improving
speed. The documentation was updated and some build system improvements
were made. A greater number of widgets is now allowed, making it possible
for the file manager to browse larger directories. Editing of new files
with the text editor was fixed. An experimental xlib version of the
arshell utility, arshell-x, was added.

[012] - DOMIT! RSS Parser for PHP 0.1
by John Heinstein (http://freshmeat.net/users/jheinstein/)
Fri, Jul 23rd 2004 13:24
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
About: DOMIT! RSS is an RSS parser for PHP+. It does not require the
installation of extensions beyond the basic PHP distribution. Unlike most
existing PHP RSS clients, it uses a DOM XML parser (DOMIT!) to convert an
RSS feed into a DOM document that can be traversed using the standard DOM
methods. It is able to parse all flavors of RSS feed, and its API is
designed to work identically across all versions. Its caching mechanism
saves a local copy of the RSS feed and updates it only at specified
intervals. It is able to detect certain types of non-compliant XML and
repair them. The lightweight DOMIT! RSS Lite is available for users who
wish only to extract title, link, and description elements from a feed.

[013] - Doodle 0.2.1
by Christian Grothoff (http://freshmeat.net/users/grothoff/)
Fri, Jul 23rd 2004 10:58
Information Management
Information Management :: Document Repositories
Information Management :: Metadata/Semantic Models
About: Doodle is a tool that searches your hard drive for files using
pattern matching on meta-data. It extracts meta-data using libextractor
and builds a suffix tree to index the files. The index can then be
searched rapidly. It is similar to locate, but can take advantage of
information such as ID3 tags.
Changes: The code was refactored to separate out a library that can be
used for manipulations of the multi suffix-tree database. This will allow
other applications access to the index constructed by doodle. A
convenience option for loading libextractor's dictionary-based meta-data
extractors was added.

by Matrix (http://freshmeat.net/users/morgan3d/)
Fri, Jul 23rd 2004 22:26
Games/Entertainment
Multimedia :: Graphics
Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Rendering
About: Graphics3D is a free, Open Source C++ library for game developers,
researchers, and students. It is a base of robust and high performance
code common to most 3D projects. It is not a standalone graphics or game
engine--it is the set of pieces you need to jumpstart your own engine or
graphics project. The library has two parts: G3D for pure math, and GLG3D
for interacting with hardware acceleration via OpenGL. You can use G3D
without GLG3D if you want to use another 3D API (like DirectX) or don't
like the OpenGL abstraction.
Changes: Support for the AABSPTree class that accelerates collision
detection, rendering, and ray tracing was expanded, and TextInput/Output
were added for easier parsing and unparsing of human-readable file
formats. Support for Rect2D (including Draw::rect2D), which is aimed at
processing video streams on programmable hardware was improved. Max/Min
alpha blending was added. Several bugfixes for MSVC 7 compatibility and
enhancements targetted at GeForce 6800/Radeon X800 were made. This
release builds on all platforms but contains only Win32 binaries.

Fri, Jul 23rd 2004 08:56
Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: JayBird is JCA/JDBC driver suite for connecting to Firebird
database servers. It was based on Borland's InterClient JDBC driver and
uses the new JCA standard, which specifies an architecture in which an
application server can cooperate with a driver so that the application
server manages transactions, security, and resource pooling, and the
driver supplies only the connection functionality. It also supports JDBC.
Changes: This release adds full JDBC 2.0 compatibility (which passed the
JDBC CTS 1.3.1 suite), full callable statement support, and batch updates.
X/Open SQL states are now reported by SQLException. Syntax support for
stored procedures and functions has been escaped. JDBC specs deviations
have been fixed.

About: Pogo is a lightweight, elegant, programmable, and highly
customizable application launcher for X11. It has no dependencies on GNOME
or KDE. Its most unique feature is that it allows external programs to
dramatically modify its appearance using a variety of different methods,
such as flashing, moving, or changing the color or shape of specific
icons. It is fully themable, and comes with a large number of pre-made
launcher icons, scripts, and usage examples to help you customize it to
match your individual system. In addition to serving as a potential
replacement for tools like GKrellM or GNOME/KDE's launcher, it can also be
used as a generic front-end for applications and scripts which lack their
own displays.
Changes: Additional launcher icons were added, bringing the total to just
over 600. A few desktop backgrounds were also added for users who choose
to run Pogo exclusively as a stand-alone desktop environment. The code
cleanup was expanded to include other now-obsolete functions.
Auto-hinting has now been tied to the action of the mouse leaving the
window, rather than remaining timer-based. Pogo now successfully
obscures both GNOME and KDE's panels on command. The executable size is
now 79KB, with a minimum memory footprint of around 22KB per launcher.

About: SKEM is a sendmail milter, that checks and maintains a list of
whitelisted, temporarily banned, and permanently blacklisted
IP-addresses. How it obtains the entries is up to the administrator, but
the included logwatcher module provides one possibility. This milter does
not itself filter spam, instead it memorizes the verdicts issued by other
anti-spam defenses to reduce the system load and resource consumption, by
temporarily rejecting the relays suspected of spamming (banned) and,
optionally by permanently rejecting the relays "convicted" of spamming
(blacklisted). The idea is to stem the traffic from real spam sources,
while reducing the ill effects of false-positives to merely delaying,
rather than rejecting future messages.

[068] - Virtualmin 2.10
by Jamie Cameron (http://freshmeat.net/users/jcameron/)
Fri, Jul 23rd 2004 00:25
System :: Systems Administration
About: Virtualmin is a Webmin module that simplifies the process of
setting up and managing virtual servers. It can create Apache virtual
hosts, BIND DNS domains, MySQL and PostgreSQL databases, and set up
Sendmail or Postfix to accept email for a domain. It can also manage
mailboxes and mail aliases within a domain.
Changes: A virtual server Unix user can now own multiple domains, and can
be given the ability to create domains itself up to some limit. All
domains are stored under the user's home directory, and share the same
disk quota. A CSR for a proper SSL certificate can be more easily
generated for a virtual server, and the returned signed certificate
installed. A range to allocate IP addresses from can be defined, used
when creating a virtual server with its own non-shared IP. The domain
name, Unix user, and home directory of a virtual server can be changed.
