definitions can be made with the FORGET word. The library was updated and
 expanded and now includes definitions for searching and replacing
strings.

  Mon, Aug 2nd 2004 10:47

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation
Office/Business
Printing

About: The Big Faceless PDF Library is a Java class library for creating
PDF documents. The Extended Edition offers the ability to create and edit
AcroForms, PDF's answer to the HTML form. Like HTML forms, PDF forms can
contain text boxes, radio buttons, and can call JavaScript functions. The
Extended Edition also includes a PDF reader for importing and editing,
along with FDF support and verification for Digital Signatures. Both
variations offer full Unicode support, encryption, embedded TrueType and
Type1 fonts, barcodes, hyperlinks, spot and calibrated color. Advanced
text layout engine enables complex HTML styles. It is small, fast, easy to
use, and 100% pure Java.

Changes: XMP metadata generation has been fixed. The FDF class can now
parse XFDF files, provided there is a SAX parser available for it to use.
Duplicate annotations when importing open annotations from an FDF have
been fixed. An isPDFObjectSignature method has been added to the
SignatureHandler class for added flexibility when developing signature
handlers. When creating a canvas from a page or cloning a page, images or
fonts used on that page are no longer cloned. An obscure problem when
cloning documents with empty indirect dictionaries has been fixed.

  Mon, Aug 2nd 2004 07:33

Communications :: Email :: Filters
Text Processing :: Filters

About: Bogofilter is a Bayesian spam filter. In its normal mode of
operation, it takes an email message or other text on standard input, does
a statistical check against lists of "good" and "bad" words, and returns a
status code indicating whether or not the message is spam. Bogofilter is
designed with fast algorithms (including Berkeley DB system), coded
directly in C, and tuned for speed, so it can be used for production by
sites that process a lot of mail.

Changes: Invalid options now cause a warning rather than a program
abortion. The regression tests were revised for %A/%I/%Q. The
bogogrep_static program is now stripped on installation. Miscellaneous
cleanups were done.

About: getmail is intended as a simple, secure, and reliable replacement
for fetchmail. It retrieves email (either all messages, or only unread
messages) from one or more POP3, SPDS, or IMAP4 servers (with or without
SSL) for one or more email accounts, and reliably delivers into
qmail-style Maildirs, mboxrd files, or through external MDAs (command
deliveries) specified on a per-account basis. getmail also has excellent
support for domain (multidrop) mailboxes, including delivering messages to
different users or destinations based on the envelope recipient address.

Changes: Some types of socket errors would raise an exception instead of
letting getmail gracefully continue. There are documentation updates: two
typos have been fixed, and there are additions to the section on using
ClamAV with getmail. The current version's URL will not change when a new

  by Christian Grothoff (http://freshmeat.net/users/grothoff/)
  Mon, Aug 2nd 2004 07:55

Communications :: File Sharing
Security :: Cryptography
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: GNUnet is a peer-to-peer framework with focus on providing
security. All peer-to-peer messages in the network are confidential and
authenticated. The framework provides a transport abstraction layer and
can currently encapsulate the network traffic in UDP (IPv4 and IPv6), TCP
(IPv4 and IPv6), HTTP, or SMTP messages. GNUnet supports accounting to
provide contributing nodes with better service. The primary service build
on top of the framework is anonymous file sharing.

Changes: This version features improved use of URIs (Universal Resource
Identifiers) for anonymous file sharing. In particular, URIs can be used
in more places and are shorter than before. This release also fixes
various bugs, including problems with connection setup in TCP on IPv6,
wrong trust values, and various build problems. This release also extends
the GNUnet framework with a service registry. Remote procedure calls can
now be performed across GNUnet using the new RPC service.

[042] - JRobin 1.4.0
  by Sasa Markovic (http://freshmeat.net/users/saxon64/)
  Mon, Aug 2nd 2004 02:42

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: JRobin is a 100% pure Java replacement for Tobi's ubiquitous
RRDTool. JRobin supports all standard operations on Round Robin Database
(RRD) files: create, update, fetch, last, dump, restore, xport, and graph.
JRobin's API is made for those who are familiar with RRDTool's concepts and
logic, but prefer to work with pure Java. Providing RRDTool and JRobin with
the same data would result in identical outputs.

Changes: The high-level RRD logic was clearly separated from low-level
I/O operations. By default the java.nio.* library is now used for fast
disk access, improving speed by at least 2-3 times. Support for RRDTool's
 XPORT command was added. The graph package now includes setResolution(),
setLowerLimit(), and setLazy() methods, new rendering options, a new
datasource type (SDEF), graph template enhancements, and several new demo
and utility applications.

About: The Pandora Engine SDK is an object-oriented development toolkit
that is specially designed for multi-platform use. It allows you to create
truly object-oriented programs without being restricted to object-oriented
languages like C++. The environment is fully self-contained, which allows
for easier porting, and the inclusion of a commercially developed VESA
graphics drivers means that you can create full-screen applications that
don't require X11. It is intended for creating both applications and
games, and is also required to write programs for Athene, a multi-platform
operating system that is based on the engine.

Changes: This version adds VESA drivers for direct access to the graphics
hardware. A number of minor feature enhancements have been made.

[070] - pmacct 0.7.2
  by Paolo Lucente (http://freshmeat.net/users/plucente/)
  Mon, Aug 2nd 2004 06:37

Internet :: Log Analysis
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: pmacct is a set of network tools to gather IP traffic information
(bytes counter and number of packets). Aggregation of statistics is done
using simple primitives (MAC addresses, VLAN IDs, IP addresses, ports, and
IP protocol) that can be used alone or combined together to form complex
aggregation methods. Counters are either global or historical (broken at
fixed timeslots); Agent IDs allow distributed counters to be created. Data
is either stored in a memory table, in an SQL database (MySQL or
PostgreSQL), or printed to stdout; recovery actions are available to avoid
data loss during DB failures. Gathering packets off the wire is done either
using the pcap library or reading NetFlow packets.

Changes: VLAN accounting has been added. Distributed accounting support
has been added. When using "pmacctd", assigning an Agent ID to the daemon
is allowed; when using "nfacctd", mapping the IP address of a router
exporting Netflow packets to an ID is allowed. This scheme eases tasks
such as keeping track of who has generated what data and either clustering
data or keeping it disjoint when it comes from different sources. MAC
address query capabilties were added to the pmacct client. Exit codes have
been fixed. The PostgreSQL creation script has been revised. Fixes were
made for some problems reported under FreeBSD 5.1.

Games/Entertainment :: Turn Based Strategy

About: Quarters is a strategy game for two players. Although its rules are
relatively simple, it still offers some of the same opportunities for skill
as in chess. This program was originally conceived in the summer of 1986
during a study of the mini-max algorithm for chess playing computers, and
was thus designed to offer some of the same type of strategies. The game
was originally written in BASIC, then ported to Turbo Pascal, then to C,
and finally to Java. The Java version is not necessarily object oriented,
since it is a crude port from the C version.

About: The Life of a Geek is very silly console game in which you (a geek)
must keep a computer running until you graduate college. Surf around on the
Internet, battling hackers to gain money and better security for your box.
Drink lots of caffeine to keep yourself awake, since if you go to sleep,
you risk an attack on your computer. Save up money to take a month-long
college course and improve your education, but remember that paying
attention to schoolwork also leaves your computer open to attack. Find a
quick job for a month at places like fast-food restaurants and grocery
stores, but remember again that time away from your computer leaves it
open to attack. Viruses may also appear on your computer, weakening your
computer's health points regularly until cleaned.

Changes: The author's email address was updated in all of the files.
FreeBSD support was added. The Windows version now requires the Cygwin
DLLs, since the MingW version did not work properly, especially with

About: Traffic Control Super Script is used for traffic shaping of
Internet (IP) traffic passing through a NAT/bridge box with only one
hosts-config file with one line per host configs. TCSS can manage
bandwidth to user-specified speeds based on the u32 classifier. TCSS uses
the iproute2-u32 classifier to identify traffic by source, dest,
sourceport, destport, proto, and tos. It then limits the rate of
connection in either a single or a bidirectional fashion.

Changes: A minor bug where the iptables selector did not reflect the
config file settings correctly was fixed and minor documentation updates
were made.

[095] - White Water 2.21
  by Sir Logic (http://freshmeat.net/users/danwillett/)
  Mon, Aug 2nd 2004 02:38

Internet

About: White Water allows people with limited or metered bandwidth to
publish files for download by thousands of people without saturating
their bandwidth. Downloaders participate by distributing chunks of the
file amongst themselves but gain by downloading several parts of the file
simultaneously. The download speed will generally be limited only by the
downloaders own bandwidth, not that of the publisher. It can also be used
in server or proxy mode, publishing and downloading files for entire
networks whilst providing more permanent sharing of cached files.

[097] - x11vnc 0.6.2
  by Karl Runge (http://freshmeat.net/users/runge/)
  Mon, Aug 2nd 2004 07:51

Communications :: Conferencing
Terminals :: Terminal Emulators/X Terminals

About: x11vnc is a program that allows one to remotely view and interact
with real X displays (i.e. a display corresponding to a physical
monitor, keyboard, and mouse) with any VNC viewer. It is similar to
WinVNC and is designed to be compatible with all Unix variants and
depend on a very small set of standard libraries. It supports a growing
number of command line options, such as -nofb for dual- headed mode with
Win2VNC. It is part of the LibVNCServer project.

Changes: Server side scaling of the framebuffer is now supported (e.g.
-scale 2/3). Support for a ~/.x11vncrc configuration file and VNC password
creation via the -storepasswd option were also added. Much work was done to
improve the Keysym handling from Windows VNC clients and, in general,
between keyboards of differing languages. The main addition is the -xkb
option that uses the XKEYBOARD extension to deduce the Modifier keys state
needed to simulate the Keysym on the X server. Additional keyboard handling
options allow fine tuning the keymapping.

[099] - XO Wave Beta 3
  by bjornbjorn (http://freshmeat.net/users/bjornbjorn/)
  Mon, Aug 2nd 2004 14:35

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Capture/Recording

About: XO Wave is a digital audio workstation. It offers powerful features
and an intuitive cross platform user interface. The audio engine is
separate from the GUI which allows for intelligent management of
background tasks and the ability to use separate machines for the
interface and for playback. It provides simple yet powerful recording,
editing, mixing, and scripting (via the XML session file) as well as basic
effects, including reverb, compression, and EQ, and flexible real-time
cross fades.

Changes: This release adds a number of new features including DAO CD
Burning on both Mac OS X and Linux/FreeBSD (this feature requires CDRecord
on Linux/FreeBSD). It also adds "Edit Softening", a feature that
automatically smooths around region boundaries so that jumps in audio
level do not produce audible "clicks." In addition, a number of minor
enhancements and bugfixes have been included.

Utilities

About: Yet Another Radius Daemon (YARDRADIUS) is a free RADIUS
RFC-compliant daemon for accounting and authorization. It is derived from
the original Lucent (formerly Livingston Enterprise Inc.) RADIUS daemon
release 2.1. It adds a number of useful features to the Lucent daemon,
such as use of GNU autoconf/automake, control of simultaneous logins, the
ability to control user access by username, groupname, GECOS field, or
shell, support for Ascend, Cisco, and USR boxes in VSA mode, and much
more. It also supports all features of the most recent LE daemon, and it
is compatible with the original Lucent configuration files.

Changes: This is the first release of the development branch. This branch
is not intended for general use and will become stable eventually in the
near future. The current release has major upgrades in autotools scripts,
which now are modified for up-to-date autoconf/automake.
