[001] - abcm2ps 4.6.6 (Development)
  by Guido Gonzato (http://freshmeat.net/users/goccia/)
  Tue, Aug 3rd 2004 06:45

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Conversion

About: abcm2ps is a package that converts music tunes from ABC format to
PostScript. Based on abc2ps version 1.2.5, it was developed mainly to
print baroque organ scores that have independant voices played on one or
more keyboards, and a pedal-board. It introduces many extensions to the
ABC language that make it suitable for classical music.

Changes: In addition to several bugfixes, this release introduces
extensions to brace and bracket staves.

  Tue, Aug 3rd 2004 00:13

About: AbyssX is a lightweight IRCd intended for use with specialized IRC
networks that is reliable, maintainable, stable, and secure.

Changes: This release is very preliminary, and much is currently
unimplemented. A clean command structure is still lacking.

[003] - acast 0.16
  by Zaheer Abbas Merali (http://freshmeat.net/users/scav/)
  Tue, Aug 3rd 2004 10:04

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Capture/Recording

About: acast is a program for webcasting audio from your sound device to a
variety of different streaming servers. Its features include the ability to
stream the audio in Ogg Vorbis to Icecast 2.x servers and in MP3 to all
Shoutcast and Icecast compatible servers. It can also simultaneously
record the stream to disk, either normally, at a higher quality, or as WAV
files for recording on CD. It has both a GTK+ interface and a console
interface. All the streams can be individually started and stopped
dynamically while the streams are running, and the recording filenames can
be changed.

Changes: The compile-time check for plugins was replaced with a run-time
check. A bug where stopping stream recording would cause a segfault was
fixed. A bug where a webcast greater than 64Kbits/sec would not work was
fixed. The command line parsing now uses popt. A command line parameter to
override basefilename was added. A bug where running in console-only mode
prevented it from iterating the pipeline was fixed. Support for using esd
as an input source was added. A command line volume level indicator was
added. The user is now allowed to leave the config file unspecified and
thus generate sane defaults.

[004] - Accession 1.20
  by brighton36 (http://freshmeat.net/users/brighton36/)
  Tue, Aug 3rd 2004 11:36

About: Accession is powerful development tool aimed at providing
developers an intuitive framework through which they can develop complex,
web- based database administration applications in a minimal amount of
time. Accession promotes the use of 'List'-based, and 'Detail'-based
views of your record sets. All a developer needs to do to build rich
feature-filled database application is to define what view type
Accession is to present along with the fields it is to manage, and how
these fields are to be presented. Accession supports a wide array of
data types and database back- ends, in addition to all the features you'd
expect from a database application toolkit.

Changes: Javascript extension support has been incorporated into command
types. The output-templating library has been drastically improved.

[005] - Aewan 0.9.0
  by Bruno T. C. de Oliveira (http://freshmeat.net/users/btco/)
  Tue, Aug 3rd 2004 22:08

About: Aewan is a curses-based program that allows for the creation and
editing of ASCII art. The user is able to move the cursor around the
screen by means of the arrow keys and "paint" characters by pressing the
corresponding keys. There are dialog boxes that allow the user to choose
foreground and background colors, as well as bold and blink attributes.
The user may also select rectangular areas of the canvas in order to move,
copy, and paste them. Aewan also supports "intelligent" horizontal and
vertical flipping (e.g., it converts "\" to "/", etc). What sets Aewan
apart from similar projects is the fact that it can work with multiple
layers and has the ability to turn transparency and visibility on and off
for each layer. A layer dialog is provided through which the user can
change the order of the layers. Thus, each layer can be edited
independently in order to generate a composite drawing. Instead of using
the layers for compositing, it is also possible to use the layers as
frames for an animation, thus enabling the user to create ASCII
animations. The file format is easy to parse, so it is easy to write a
terminal-based application that uses the Aewan files to display onscreen.
Aewan has been tested on the Linux terminal, rxvt, xterm, and the FreeBSD
console.

Changes: This version changes the native file format to a simple, self-
describing, platform-independent gzip-compressed ASCII text format. It is
easier to parse/generate by other applications. The AES format was
abolished because with this change it is no longer necessary. Aewan now
compiles (and is fully featured) under Cygwin. There are also some minor
bugfixes.

Internet
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: Contact Form is a Perl script that allows users to send you email
through a Web interface. It is designed to thwart spammers by not
allowing email to be sent to unknown addresses, or revealing the
addresses that it knows. In addition to this, it does not contain cross
site scripting vulnerabilities or allow arbitrary code to be run on the
host. It provides adequate information in the headers it sends to trace
spammers, can check the validity of all data before sending emails, and
features a customizable interface that allows for arbitrary fields.

Changes: Perl's built in safety checks (-T, -w, and use strict) are now
used. The "prefill" parameter may be used to suppress error messages when
passing in some other parameters prefilled. An icon linked from form was
added. A fix was made for subdomain regular expressions, so they can start
with numbers. The spelling of certain variable names was corrected.

Text Processing
Text Processing :: General
Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML

About: deplate is a tool for converting documents written in an
unobtrusive, wiki-like markup to LaTeX, HTML, or "HTML slides". It
supports embedded LaTeX code, footnotes, citations, bibliographies,
automatic generation of an index, etc. In contrast to many wiki engines,
it is made for "offline" use as a document preparation tool. In this
respect it is similar to tools like aft or txt2tags. It aims to be
modular and easily extensible. It is the accompanying converter for the
Vim viki plugin.

Changes: This release fixes a bug that prevented deplate from running if
$RUBYLIB wasn't defined. This release moreover features a Chinese
localization module (by Jjgod Jiang) and an experimental module for a
dynamic HTML pop-up table of contents. The handling of page headers and
footers was improved. The #IF command can perform tests on command line
options. #AU and #TI were added as aliases for #AUTHOR and #TITLE. A new
command-line option (-- [no-]simple-names) allows disabling simple Wiki

[027] - GeoServer 1.2.0
  by Chris Holmes (http://freshmeat.net/users/cholmes/)
  Tue, Aug 3rd 2004 11:13

Internet
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: Z39.50

About: The GeoServer project is a full transactional Java (J2EE)
implementation of the OpenGIS Consortium's Web Feature Server (WFS)
specification with a completely integrated Web Map Server (WMS). Users who
would like to access and modify their geographic data over the Internet
using flexible, industry-approved standards should take a look at
GeoServer or one of the existing commercial Web Feature Servers. It is
built as a thin layer on top of the excellent GeoTools2 GIS toolkit, and
includes a STRUTs-based Web administration interface for easy
configuration.

Changes: This release marks the completion of an extensive push to make it
much more usable. The centerpiece is the Web administration interface,
which allows it to be completely configured from any standard Web browser.
ArcSDE and Oracle support have improved to complement the solid PostGIS and
Shapefile formats, and the WMS (visualization) is more efficient and
compliant. An innovative validation engine has also been added, allowing
users to define rules to ensure the integrity of their backend databases
during transactions.

  Tue, Aug 3rd 2004 11:15

Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Software Development :: Libraries

About: GiNaC (GiNaC is Not a CAS (Computer Algebra System)) is a C++
library for symbolic calculations. It is designed to allow the creation of
integrated systems that embed symbolic manipulations together with more
established areas of computer science (like computation-intense numeric
applications, graphical interfaces, etc.). Contrary to other CASes it does
not try to provide extensive algebraic capabilities and a simple
programming language but instead accepts a given language (C++) and
extends it by a set of algebraic capabilities.

Changes: This release adds tree traversal iterators, a matrix::rank()
method, and a new function resultant(). Also, content() and primpart() now
work for polynomials with rational coefficients, and various bugs in the
series expansion, complex conjugation, and handling of indexed objects
have been fixed.

  Tue, Aug 3rd 2004 16:03

Communications
Internet
Security

About: GNU SASL is an implementation of the Simple Authentication and
Security Layer framework and a few common SASL mechanisms. SASL is used
by network servers such as IMAP and SMTP to request authentication from
clients, and in clients to authenticate against servers. The library
includes support for the SASL framework (with authentication functions
and application data privacy and integrity functions) and at least
partial support for the CRAM-MD5, EXTERNAL, GSSAPI, ANONYMOUS, PLAIN,
SECURID, DIGEST-MD5, LOGIN, NTLM, and KERBEROS_V5 mechanisms.

Changes: This release adds commandline tool improvements and IPv6 support.
It changes the default behavior for --client, --imap, --connect, and
--authentication-id. It is now possible to invoke "gsasl mail.example.org"
and have it authenticate to mail.example.org over IMAP, instead of the much
more complicated usage before.

Communications :: File Sharing
Security :: Cryptography
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: GNUnet is a peer-to-peer framework with focus on providing
security. All peer-to-peer messages in the network are confidential and
authenticated. The framework provides a transport abstraction layer and
can currently encapsulate the network traffic in UDP (IPv4 and IPv6), TCP
(IPv4 and IPv6), HTTP, or SMTP messages. GNUnet supports accounting to
provide contributing nodes with better service. The primary service build
on top of the framework is anonymous file sharing.

Changes: This release fixes various minor bugs in the version update
mechanism and the anonymous file sharing code. It also fixes a packaging
error that resulted in build failures for some configurations.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players :: MP3

About: iList is an intelligent playlist for the KDE media player Noatun.
It is intelligent in the sense that songs are selected from a (possibly
large) repository of audio files in a smart manner. Think of it as your
personal radio station that plays your favourite songs all day long. iList
supports implicit song ranking, incremental search, a song history,
independent queueing, multiple collections, and fast access to large
repositories with auto detection of new files.

Changes: The priority play mode is now in a usable state. A link to the
lyrics page is displayed in the info widget if a link is set by the lyrics
plugin. The display of tooltips on items is now configurable. The progress
window is properly updated on startup and shutdown of iList. User
configurable priorities have been provided, but these might change in the
future. The tagger is notified of newly added items. An item's title is
cached to make sorting more efficient.

[036] - ipsvd 0.9.6
  by Gerrit Pape (http://freshmeat.net/users/pape/)
  Tue, Aug 3rd 2004 13:52

System :: Networking

About: ipsvd is a set of Internet protocol service daemons for TCP/IP and
UDP/IP. A daemon waits for incoming connections on a socket; for new
connections, it conditionally runs an arbitrary program to handle the
connection. The daemons can be told to read and follow pre-defined
instructions on how to handle incoming connections; based on the client's
IP address or hostname, they can run different programs, set a different
environment, deny a connection, or set a per host concurrency limit. On
Linux the network connection optionally can be encrypted using SSL3. ipsvd
can be used to run services usually run by inetd or tcpserver. Normally the
daemons are run by a supervisor process, such as runsv from the runit
package, or daemontools' supervise.

Changes: The sslio program has been fixed to detect a successful SSL
handshake properly, preventing data from the service program from being
written to the network before the SSL connection is fully established. The
current version of the SSL library is used to build sslio.

  Tue, Aug 3rd 2004 16:18

System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Compression
System :: Installation/Setup

About: mkCDrec (Make CD-ROM Recovery) makes a bootable (El Torito)
disaster recovery image, including backups of the Linux system to one or
more CD-ROM(s) (multi-volume sets). Otherwise, the backups can be stored
on another disk, NFS disk, or (remote) tape. After a disk crash or system
intrusion, the system can be booted from the CD-ROM and one can restore
the complete system as it was. It also features disk cloning, which allows
one to restore a disk to another disk (the destination disk does not have
to be of the same size, as it calculates the partition layout itself).
Currently, ext2, ext3, minix, MS-DOS, FAT, VFAT, Reiserfs, XFS, and JFS
filesystems are supported. mkCdrec is also able to restore disks in
Software RAID and LVM mode.

Changes: This release adds One Button Disaster Recovery (OBDR). make

  Tue, Aug 3rd 2004 10:45

Security
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: NetSQUID is a Perl script (daemon) that sits in between Snort and
IPTables. It gathers alerts generated by Snort, then automatically creates
an IPTables firewall entry to block the alerting host (such as those
infected by viruses). Web traffic is redirected to a Web server that can
alert the user to the infection. The host is automatically unblocked after
a specified time. It can also send DHCP address requests, so rogue DHCP
servers can be detected by Snort.

Changes: The ability to allow for a 'pass through' HTTP server was added,
so that all port 80 traffic will be redirected except to a specified
server (perhaps a patch server or similar). Also, any IPs specified in
either the DNS section or the HTTP section of the config file are
automatically added to the exclude list, so they will not be blocked for
any alert generated by them.

About: SiteMesh was built upon the Java Servlet 2.3 API. It is a web-page
layout system and web-application integration system to aid in creating
large sites consisting of many pages for which a consistent look/feel,
navigation, and layout scheme is required. It intercepts requests to any
static or dynamically generated HTML page requested through the
web-server, parses the page, obtains properties, and data from the
content, and generates an appropriate final page with modifications to the
original. It is ideally suited for Java based sites (particularly JSP) but
can be dropped into any existing site that uses a Servlet engine including
static, CGI, PHP, and ColdFusion generated pages.

Internet
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: pkt is a universal XML packet archiver. It can manipulate files for
backing up documents, transferring them across networks, emailing them, and
sharing them by other means (p2p etc). It uses plugin filters to do the job
and handles virtually any format available if there is a plugin for it. It
handles encryption, compression, conversion, parity checking, decryption,
decoding, repairing, rebuilding, and other tasks using a universal file
format (XML-based). By default, all pkt output is in 7-bit ASCII which is
UTF encoded and is compatible with XML parsers. pkt files can be
disassembled, reassembled, and repaired by hand if necessary. pkt also
supports the use of 8-bit compressed XML packets for its archives using
one of several compression algorithms. In general, pkt will try to use the
best algorithms available.

Changes: A full cipher suite (Blowfish, AES128, and AES256) has been
added. The existing encryption system has been optimized for a roughly
40-50% speed increase. A text editor with search and replace capability
(case sensitive/insensitive) has been added. Themeable options have been
added to the utilities menu with four themes to select from. Encryption
and decryption algorithm selection capability has been added to the GUI
and the CLI.

About: PrEd is a Java-based graphical utility to find and edit Java
property files in JAR, WAR, and other kinds of ZIP archives. It is an
appropriate tool for customizing Java applications which use XML and
Property files for their configuration. It provides an interface to edit
the property values of property files and to edit the values of XML text
nodes and attributes. No knowledge of XML is needed to edit XML files. The
program can update JAR and WAR files without having to extract them.

Changes: XML editing features were added. The default setting of files
types is now both XML and property files. The readme file was updated, and
documentation was added in the form of a Web site. A Unix-like shell script

[068] - Python milter 0.7.0
  by Stuart D. Gathman (http://freshmeat.net/users/stuartdgathman/)
  Tue, Aug 3rd 2004 13:47

Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: The milter module for Python provides a python interface to
Sendmail's libmilter that exploits all its features. Milters can run on
the same machine as sendmail, or another machine. The milter can even run
with a different operating system or processor than sendmail. Sendmail
talks to the milter via a local or internet socket, and keeps the milter
informed of events as it processes a mail connection. At any point, the
milter can cut the conversation short by telling sendmail to ACCEPT,
REJECT, or DISCARD the message. After receiving a complete message from
sendmail, the milter can again REJECT or DISCARD it, but it can also
ACCEPT it with changes to the headers or body.

Changes: SPF checks the helo name. pythonsock has been moved to
/var/run/milter. milter.cfg has been moved to /etc/mail/pymilter.cfg.
Microsoft-style XML CID records are checked by converting to SPF. This
release will recognize, but never match IPv6 in SPF (until it is properly
supported). There is an option to reject senders with no PTR and no SPF.

is written in Java and should be able to run on any platform. It does
depend upon an image converter if imagescaleing is on. The recommended
image converter is "convert" from the ImageMagick package.

Changes: A problem with image conversion under Windows was fixed. The
default convert arguments were updated so that it strips exif headers and
similar things. More MIME type handlers were added. A file name typo for
SSLHandler.java was fixed. A bug in the HTML parser was fixed. The cache
status expiry date was made human readable again. Some code cleanup and
initial work on better response header handling was done.
