[005] - BitDefender for Postfix 1.6.0-6
  by BitDefender (http://freshmeat.net/users/linuxdefender/)
  Wed, Aug 4th 2004 05:28

Communications :: Email :: Filters
Communications :: Email :: Mail Transport Agents
Security

About: BitDefender for Postfix provides proactive protection of message
traffic at the email server level, eliminating the risk to the entire
network that could be caused by a negligent user. All messages, both sent
and received, are scanned for spam and viruses in real time, avoiding the
possible infections and preventing anyone from sending an infected
message. BitDefender claims 100% detection rate for all viruses in the
wild (ITW) through its powerful scanning engines.

Changes: This version adds antispam filter with 3 plugins (heuristic
scanning, WBL (Whitelist/Blacklist), and URL filter), and an internal
Watchdog (bdmond) to watch every request and take the appropriate action
if the scanning daemon fails (restart, ignore, refuse, reject). The
"Forward" feature has been added to duplicate or forward email traffic
(all or only disinfected messages or only virused messages) to a local or
 remote mailbox, and custom email disclaimers and virus alerts are now
available in English, German, French, Spanish, Catalan, and Romanian.

  Wed, Aug 4th 2004 13:19

Security :: Cryptography
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: CIPE (Crypto IP Encapsulation) is an ongoing project to build
encrypting IP routers. The protocol used is as lightweight as possible. It
is designed for passing encrypted packets between prearranged routers in
the form of UDP packets. This is not as flexible as IPSEC but it is enough
for the original intended purpose: securely connecting subnets over an
insecure transit network.

Changes: This version runs under Linux 2.6 (as well as earlier versions).
It can use the kernel crypto API and its cipher algorithms (with Linux 2.6
or 2.4.23+).

About: Clustered JDBC is to databases what RAID is for disks. C-JDBC
provides transparent database clustering (partitioning, replication, etc.)
to any Java application through JDBC. It works with any Java application
without code modification and with any database engine. C-JDBC has been
successfully tested with Tomcat, JBoss, JOnAS, WebSphere, MySQL,
PostgreSQL, HSQL, SAP DB, Oracle, Sybase, MS SQL, Firebird, and more.

Changes: This version includes a completely redesigned administration
console with an enhanced graphical interface to manage and monitor
distributed virtual databases. Several external components upgrades
(JGroups and Octopus), bugfixes, and JMX enhancements are included.

[014] - CWirc 1.8.8
  by Pierre-Philippe Coupard
(http://freshmeat.net/users/pierrephilippecoupar/)
  Wed, Aug 4th 2004 19:05

Communications :: Chat :: Internet Relay Chat
Communications :: Ham Radio

About: CWirc is a plugin for the X-Chat IRC client to transmit raw Morse
code over the internet using IRC servers as reflectors. The transmitted
Morse code can be received in near real-time by other X-Chat clients with
the CWirc plugin. CWirc tries to emulate a standard amateur radio rig: it
sends and receives Morse over virtual channels, and it can listen to
multiple senders transmitting on the same channel. Morse code is keyed
locally using a straight or iambic key connected to a serial port, or
using the mouse buttons, and the sound is played through the sound card,
or through an external sounder.

Changes: This release fixes a bug in the incoming signal buffering that
would overwrite buffered events when frames would come too fast during the
fade-out period, just after a buffer underrun.

[015] - Domain Technologie Control 0.14.0-R1
  by Thomas Goirand (http://freshmeat.net/users/zigo/)
  Wed, Aug 4th 2004 09:57

Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: IMAP
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: POP3
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

About: Domain Technologie Control (DTC) is a Web GUI for administration
and accounting for hosting services. Made up of a set of PHP scripts that
manage a MySQL database which handles all the hosting information, it
generates backup scripts, statistics calculation scripts, and config files
for bind, Apache, qmail, postfix, courier, dovecot, and proftpd, using a
single system UID/GID. It allows administrators to delegate the task of
creating subdomains, email, and FTP accounts to users for the domain names
they own.

Changes: The MySQL dump wasn't done correctly, so a space was missing
after the date of the generated Apache logs. Therefore, Webalizer stats
weren't done correctly. A db_stop prevented Debian users from seeing the
installer stuck at the end of install because of restarting daemons
(debconf would wait forever for daemons to terminate without the call to
db_stop). The bw view per month works with zero as the quota, and
overquota is now drawn in red.

  by Eli Barzilay (http://freshmeat.net/users/elibarzilay/)
  Wed, Aug 4th 2004 20:22

Text Editors :: Integrated Development Environments (IDE)

About: DrScheme is a graphical environment for developing programs using
the Scheme, MzScheme, and MrEd programming languages. DrScheme runs under
Windows 95/98/NT, MacOS, and Unix/X. DrScheme's features include source
text highlighting of syntax and run-time errors, support for multiple
levels of Scheme from beginner to advanced, an algebraic stepper for the
beginner language, interactive and graphical static analysis, a graphical
user interface (GUI) library, objects, threads, modules, exceptions,
TCP/IP, regular expressions, and filesystem support.

Changes: PLaneT, a repository for PLT Scheme, has been integrated with the
module system. See http://planet.plt-scheme.org/ for information. FrTime
was changed considerably, and has multiple language levels ("Minimal"
includes most of MzScheme; "Standard" also provides some libraries),
enhancements, and more demos. In ProfessorJ, the Beginner language allows
initialized field definitions and imposes restrictions on ==. Additions to
the htdp teachpack include image.ss (for creating and manipulating pictures
in an algebraic manner) and world.ss (for turning these images into
animations).

the ability to add attachments to logbook pages. Logbook entries can be
categorized with user-defined classes, and queried using filters on these
classes. Automatic email notifications can be generated on new entries
based on the classes. The ELOG server is a small stand-alone C program,
which runs under Linux and Windows. No other packages are required. The
logbooks are saved in plain ASCII files for easy and fast access.

Changes: Automatic cloning makes it easier to set up a mirror server.
Several small additions have been implemented and bugs have been fixed.

Internet :: Proxy Servers

About: Etherpuppet is a small program for Linux that will create a virtual
interface (TUN/TAP) on one machine from the ethernet interface of another
machine through a TCP connection. Everything seen by the real interface
will be seen by the virtual one. Everything sent to the virtual interface
will be emitted by the real one. It has been designed because one often
has a small machine as his Internet gateway, and sometimes want to run
some big applications that need raw access to this interface, for sniffing
(Ethereal, etc.) or for crafting packets that do not survive being
reassembled, NATed, etc. It can even run on Linux embedded routers such as
the Linksys WRT54G.

  by JKB (http://freshmeat.net/users/jkb/)
  Wed, Aug 4th 2004 13:10

System :: Operating System Kernels

About: FreeVMS is an OpenVMS-like operating system which can run on
several architectures like i386, PPC, Alpha, and many others. It consists
of a POSIX kernel and a DCL command line interpreter. The only
architecture currently supported is i386.

Changes: This release has make targets and scripts to create the build
environment and bochs image. This release has EDT (imported from ozone).
An effort has been made to make the scheduler more compliant to VMS. In
CONFIG_VMS, 3c900 works now, and it can be pinged for a while (it has the
CMUIP stack). String-related bugs in ioc$search, some bugs in logicals,
and forking with CONFIG_VMS have been fixed. A sudden reset may happen

  by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
  Wed, Aug 4th 2004 09:43

Security
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: fwknop is a flexible port knocking implementation that is based
around iptables. Both shared knock sequences and encrypted knock sequences
are supported. In addition, fwknop makes use of passive OS fingerprinting
signatures derived from p0f to ensure the OS that initiates a knock
sequence conforms to a specific type. This makes it possible to allow,
say, only Linux systems to connect to your SSH daemon. Both the knock
sequences and OS fingerprinting are completely implemented around iptables
log messages, and so a separate packet capture library is not required.

Changes: Remote username checking in encrypted sequences was implemented.
Support for ICMP in knock sequences was added. A protocol rotation option
for encrypted sequences was added. Code for multiple SOURCE access blocks
with the same source net/IP was added. The KNOCK_LIMIT access control
variable was added to limit the number of times a particular knock
sequence is honored. Email alerts were added.

[022] - getmail 4.0.6 (Stable)

  Wed, Aug 4th 2004 09:43

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: getmail is intended as a simple, secure, and reliable replacement
for fetchmail. It retrieves email (either all messages, or only unread
messages) from one or more POP3, SPDS, or IMAP4 servers (with or without
SSL) for one or more email accounts, and reliably delivers into
qmail-style Maildirs, mboxrd files, or through external MDAs (command
deliveries) specified on a per-account basis. getmail also has excellent
support for domain (multidrop) mailboxes, including delivering messages to
different users or destinations based on the envelope recipient address.

Changes: If the connection failed in a certain way, getmail could forget
which messages it had already retrieved, and therefore retrieve them again
when the next successful connection occurred. This has been fixed. A Win32
executable installer has been added as a third download option.

  by Guillaume Chazarain (http://freshmeat.net/users/booh/)
  Wed, Aug 4th 2004 05:27

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers

About: GLiv is an OpenGL image viewer. Image loading is done via
Gdk-pixbuf bundled with GTK+-2.4, rendering with OpenGL, and the graphical
user interface uses GTK+ with GtkGLExt. GLiv is very fast and smooth at
rotating, panning and zooming if you have an OpenGL accelerated graphics
board. It supports thumbnails and navigating through them using two images
menus.

Changes: Gtk+-2.4 is now required. The framerate limiter is more accurate
and is by default enabled at 100 fps. Collections load faster since the
file is now mmapped. There is a Slovak translation.

  by Jim Jozwiak (http://freshmeat.net/users/jozwiak/)
  Wed, Aug 4th 2004 19:37

Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.

About: nut is nutrition software to record what you eat and analyze your
meals for nutrient composition. The database included is the USDA Nutrient
Database for Standard Reference, Release 16-1, which contains 6,661 foods
and 125 nutrients. This database contains values for vitamins, minerals,
fats, calories, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, etc., and includes the
essential polyunsaturated fats, Omega-3 and Omega-6. Nutrient levels are
expressed as a percentage of the Daily Value, the familiar standard of
food labeling in the United States, but also can be fully customized.
Foods can be added from recipes or food labels, and nutrient intake can be
graphed. The program is completely menu-driven and there are no commands to
learn.

Changes: This release optimizes the new code of the last release, the
focus of which was distinguishing no data from zero in the USDA database.

[042] - Openwall Linux kernel patch 2.4.26-ow3 (Linux 2.4)
  by Solar Designer (http://freshmeat.net/users/solardiz/)
  Wed, Aug 4th 2004 09:53

Security
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux
System :: Systems Administration

About: The Openwall Linux kernel patch is a collection of security
"hardening" features for the Linux kernel. In addition to the new
features, some versions of the patch contain various security fixes. The
"hardening" features of the patch, while not a complete method of
protection, provide an extra layer of security against the easier ways to
exploit certain classes of vulnerabilities and/or reduce the impact of
those vulnerabilities. The patch can also add a little bit more privacy to
the system by restricting access to parts of /proc so that users may not
see what others are doing.

Changes: This update corrects the access control check in the Linux kernel
which previously incorrectly allowed any local user to change the group
ownership of arbitrary NFS-exported/imported files (CAN-2004-0497). It
adds a workaround for the file offset pointer races (CAN-2004-0415).

About: OpenWFE is a workflow engine. It is written in Java and is robust,
extensible, and scalable. An access library for Python is available,
making it easy to write custom interfaces or agents (automatic
participants) for a workflow-enabled system.

Changes: This release introduces a lot of changes in the release tree
structure. The tree is less flat, there are fewer launch scripts. The
'engine' package got fully qualified to 'openwfe.org.engine' instead of
simply 'openwfe.org' which was confusing and it induced another set of
changes to the configuration files. Control over REST got implemented so
that Python (and soon .Net) interfaces will be able to cancel or

About: phpSNMP is an implementation of SNMP in pure PHP as an alternate

should be a uniform format across platforms, and should be more
thread-safe than the extension.

Changes: Several bitwise operations were changed to arithmetic to avoid
problems with overflow to float. Version .1 should not be used, as
incorrect data is returned for results larger than the range of signed
integers (such as large unsigned ints). A timeout was added to prevent
hanging when remote device is not responding. The set function now has

  Wed, Aug 4th 2004 07:32

About: Smarty-Light is a fast, easy, efficient template engine for PHP.
It supports a similar syntax to Smarty, but adds useful features, removes
some not-so-useful features, and is just faster. It is a compiling,
caching template engine.

Changes: It is very important that you clean out your compile and cache
directories after this upgrade. The previous attempt at making cache files
check included files for changes was a failure, but now it works.

[060] - SmokePing 1.31 (Stable)
  by Tobias Oetiker (http://freshmeat.net/users/oetiker/)
  Wed, Aug 4th 2004 19:11

System :: Benchmark
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: SmokePing is a network latency monitor which works in a way that is
similar to MRTG. It measures network latency to a configurable set of
destinations on the network, and displays its findings in easy-to-read Web
pages. SmokePing has special support for monitoring hosts with dynamic IP
addresses. SmokePing uses RRDtool as its logging and graphing back-end,
making the system very efficient. The presentation of the data on the Web
is done through a CGI which creates graphs on demand.

Changes: This release adds the new probes AnotherDNS, AnotherSSH, and SSH,
makes the FPing probe handle ICMP errors gracefully, fixes RemoteFPing to
work with an unpatched fping binary, and fixes timeout behavior in the
base::forks class.

[061] - Stabilizer 0.2.1
  by Amir Michail (http://freshmeat.net/users/amir/)
  Wed, Aug 4th 2004 07:36

Software Development
Software Development :: Bug Tracking
Software Development :: Testing

About: The Stabilizer bug tracking system aims to quickly stabilize buggy
GUI applications so that people can get real work done with them. Users
can collaboratively and quickly stabilize applications simply by using
them normally and reporting any bugs that they encounter to prevent anyone
(including themselves) from encountering them again. As soon as a few
people report the same bug, warnings will be issued to all users whenever
they are about to trigger that bug and they will be given the opportunity
to abort the input event. The bugs need to be fixed eventually, but this
makes the application useful in the meantime.

Changes: Bug prediction has been improved: not only can users explicitly
report a bug, but they can also explicitly report "not bug" after an
erroneous bug warning. When reporting a bug or "not bug", the user can
preview and omit the before/after screenshots if they contain sensitive
information. Screenshot capture speed has been improved significantly
under Linux. The Stabilizer runner can now intercept more Java GUI events,
yet allows the user to filter events if necessary, using a new
-excludeEvent regexp option. Additional work was also done on the
evaluation framework for bug prediction.

Software Development :: Version Control

About: svk is a decentralized version control system. While Subversion
(svn) aims to take over the CVS user base, svk attempts to take over the
user base of the other version control systems, including people who have
already switched to another version control system, as well as people who
have not yet started using a version control system. It is written in Perl
and uses Subversion's underlying filesystem.

Changes: This release adds Subversion-1.1 compatible symlink support.

Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
Text Processing :: Markup :: XSL/XSLT

About: Syntext Serna is an XSL-on-the-fly WYSIWYG XML document editor.
During the editing process, it renders XML documents according to XSL
stylesheets (e.g., a Docbook XSL stylesheet similar to the Norman Walsh
one). As a result, authors constantly see rendered and transformed content
which looks similar to the final presentation. It also provides on-the-fly
XML schema validation and extensive entity support.

Changes: This release features major memory optimizations. Docbook
documents now require 30% less memory.

[065] - Tablix 0.0.8
  by Tomaz Solc (http://freshmeat.net/users/Avian/)
  Wed, Aug 4th 2004 19:37

Office/Business :: Scheduling

About: Tablix is a high school timetable generator. It uses a
coarse-grained parallel genetic algorithm to construct sensible timetables
from XML-formated school information files. It can run on a single host as
well as on a heterogenous parallel virtual machine using PVM. Its features
include a number of possible restrictions for teachers or classes,
HTML-formatted output, and configurable genetic parameters.

Changes: Three new modules have been added to the distribution. Support
for "restriction" tags under "classrooms" tags has been added. The limit
to the maximum number of tuples in a single problem has been removed.
Advanced genetic algorithm parameters can now be set at runtime. Three new
utilities have been added. Load balancing code has been rewritten. Several
important bugs have been fixed.

[069] - UMLGraph 2.6
  by Diomidis Spinellis (http://freshmeat.net/users/diomidis/)
  Wed, Aug 4th 2004 05:32

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Software Development :: Documentation

About: UMLGraph facilitates the declarative specification and drawing of
UML class and sequence diagrams. One can specify a class design using the
Java syntax complemented by Javadoc tags. Running the UmlGraph doclet on
the specification generates a Graphviz diagram specification that can be
automatically processed to create Postscript, GIF, SVG, JPEG, fig, or
Framemaker drawings. Similarly, sequence diagrams are specified using
declarative pic macros and compiled with the GNU plotutils pic2plot
program into a PNG, PNM, (pseudo) GIF, SVG, AI, Postscript, CGM, FIG, PCL,
HPGL, Regis, or TEK drawing.

Changes: Customization of URL mapping allows links between UML diagrams
and corresponding class documentation (requires Java 1.4). There was some
source cleanup, documentation improvements, and minor bugfixes.
