[001] - acast 0.17
  by Zaheer Abbas Merali (http://freshmeat.net/users/scav/)
  Wed, Aug 11th 2004 15:25

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Capture/Recording

About: acast is a program for webcasting audio from your sound device to a
variety of different streaming servers. Its features include the ability to
stream the audio in Ogg Vorbis to Icecast 2.x servers and in MP3 to all
Shoutcast and Icecast compatible servers. It can also simultaneously
record the stream to disk, either normally, at a higher quality, or as WAV
files for recording on CD. It has both a GTK+ interface and a console
interface. All the streams can be individually started and stopped
dynamically while the streams are running, and the recording filenames can
be changed.

Changes: This release has support for using gnome-media profiles for
recording, support for using the Gnome default audio source and a
configure option to enable/disable Gnome support, file menu operations in
the GUI, instant-apply for preferences, and large scale GUI interface
changes. It is a Gnome program (if in GUI mode and configure flag is
enabled). Some memory leaks have been plugged and GST code cleaned up.
The HScales have been removed completely; it only uses VU meters. Peak
and decaying peak VU meters have been removed; it only has one VU meter
per channel showing RMS and peak.

[002] - aircrack 1.1
  by Christophe Devine (http://freshmeat.net/users/devine10/)
  Wed, Aug 11th 2004 06:45

Security

About: aircrack is an 802.11 WEP cracking program that can recover a
40-bit or 104-bit WEP key once enough encrypted packets have been
gathered. It implements the standard FMS attack along with some
optimizations, thus making the attack much faster compared to other WEP
cracking tools.

Changes: This release adds multi-processor support, improves the fudge
calculation algorithm, and fixes a major bug in the BSSID check code. It
also introduces a new tool (aireplay) that can be used to generate traffic
on a WEP-encrypted wireless LAN without knowing the key, thereby reducing
the amount of time needed to gather a sufficient number of encrypted data
packets.

  by lerhaupt (http://freshmeat.net/users/lerhaupt/)
  Wed, Aug 11th 2004 15:35

System :: Systems Administration

About: DKMS (Dynamic Kernel Module Support) is a framework where device
driver source can reside outside the kernel source tree so that it is very
easy to rebuild modules as you upgrade kernels. This allows Linux vendors
to provide driver drops without having to wait for new kernel releases (as
a stopgap before the code can make it back into the kernel), while also
taking out the guesswork for customers attempting to recompile modules for
new kernels. For veteran Linux users it also provides some advantages since
a separate framework for driver drops will remove kernel releases as a
blocking mechanism for distributing code.

Changes: This release adds support for making SuSE/UnitedLinux driver
disks. It adds support for /etc/modprobe.conf for 2.6 kernels, and has
enhancements to the mkrpm process.

Multimedia
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players :: MP3

About: GeeXboX is a standalone media player Linux distribution, similar to
MoviX. It's a small bootable CD which allows you to play your favorites
video (DivX, XviD, FFMpeg, MPEG 1/2, VCD, DVD, OggMedia, Windows Media,
RealMedia, etc.) and audio (MP3, Audio CD, Ogg/Vorbis, etc.) files. It is
based on MPlayer, and can be used on every x86 computer. It supports
TV-out for various cards such as S3, nVidia, and ATI. A bootable ISO is
available, but it's easy to modify the sources to build your own GeeXboX
or even to install it on a HDD or USB Key or to boot from network via PXE.
It also supports network and is able to play medias on a Windows/Samba
share. It also supports TV tuners and WiFi cards.

Changes: This release switches MPlayer to 1.0pre5, has better WiFi
support and drivers for RT2400 and ACX100 chipsets, adds control through
joysticks, support for SPDIF output, software decoding of DTS audio
streams, a chapter selector for DVDs and Matroska files, fixes the TV-Out
problem with nVidia cards, and adds support for external USB SmartMedia
and CompactFlash card readers.

[013] - GluCat 0.1.8
  by Paul C. Leopardi (http://freshmeat.net/users/leopardi/)
  Wed, Aug 11th 2004 05:10

Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Software Development :: Libraries

About: GluCat is a library of template classes which model the universal
Clifford algebras over the real or complex fields, with arbitrary
dimension and arbitrary signature. Technically, what GluCat implements is
a model of each Clifford algebra corresponding to each non-degenerate
quadratic form up to a maximum set by the user. GluCat classes are
designed to be used as template parameters for other template libraries,
such as Blitz++, deal.II, Matrix Template Library, and POOMA.

Changes: The index_set<> string constructor and stream input operator>>
now work with strings of the form "1,2". The sign_of_mult() function for
index_set<> has been improved. The subscript operator[] for matrix_multi<>
now works properly for index sets not contained in m_frame. Programs can
now invoke GluCat classes and functions from separately compiled modules,
since the try_catch functions have been moved to the new file
test/try_catch.h. Minor speed improvements have been made for some
constructors for matrix_multi<> and operator%= for framed_multi<>.
Compilation with g++ versions before 3.3 uses less inlining.

[029] - MagicPoint 1.10a
  by e-type (http://freshmeat.net/users/etype/)
  Wed, Aug 11th 2004 10:20

Office/Business

About: MagicPoint is an X11 based presentation tool. It is designed to
make simple presentations easy while making complicated presentations
possible. Its presentation file is just text so that you can create
presentation files quickly with your favorite editor (e.g. Emacs). It
includes a true type library for elegant looking text and effects.

Changes: This release has support for Xft2 + fontconfig, and support for
the new directive %tab 0. For security reasons, mgp has been changed so
that directives that fork a process are not processed by default. The
%opaque directive has been introduced. There is support for iso8859-2
encoding for mgp2ps. An -X option has been added to mgp2ps to suppress the
use of the specified rendering engine. An escape character (\) has been
introduced to display lines that start with '#'. There are many bugfixes.

About: NGSecureWeb is a security module for Web Servers. It acts as an
HTTP IDS/firewall, preventing security bugs from being exploited. It has
the ability to check for shellcodes (even polymorphic ones), buffer
overflows, forbidden words, long URLs, long GET arguments, long POST

detects a possible attack, the firewall engine stops the request. The
Apache (1.3 and 2), Netscape Enterprise/IPlanet, and IIS Web servers are
supported.

Changes: The configuration, signatures, license, and error files are now
hot loadable; there's no more need to restart the Web server. The
management protocol has been completely rewritten. There's a new "Log

[038] - NoMachine NX 1.4.0 S 66/43
  by NXAdmin (http://freshmeat.net/users/NXAdmin/)
  Wed, Aug 11th 2004 05:26

Communications

Software Development

About: NoMachine NX is a fast terminal server system based on the X11
protocol. In addition, NX also translates and embeds the MS Windows
Terminal Server and VNC protocols into X/NX. NX is an order of magnitude
faster than VNC or X11 on bandwidth as narrow as 10 kBit/sec. By embedding
RDP and RFB, it enables users to compress and accelerate remote Windows and
VNC sessions. NX lets you work fluently even across slow links like modems.
The NX project provides a suite of libraries and X11 proxying agents
implementing efficient compression and optimized transport of X11, SMB,
IPP, and arbitrary protocols like audio over the Internet.

Changes: This is the fourth snapshot of the 1.4.0 branch. The snapshot
releases are only intended for development purposes. The 1.4.0 version
introduces two major features: support for local printers and session
persistence. Session persistence allows users to suspend the X11 session
and restart it, on the same or a different computer, at a later time
(think of "screen" for X11). This development release has redesigned
tunneling over SSH, better handling of keyboard layouts in RDP sessions,
fixes to clipboard management, and filesystem sharing using the SMB
protocol.

Security
System :: Networking

About: OpenRADIUS is a RADIUS server that allows you to use external data
sources for anything - shared secrets, accounts and passwords, profiles,
session database, NAS lists, called/calling nr. ACLs, accounting storage,
and much more. It has a powerful external module interface that uses
pre-spawned subprocesses and pipes for communication, allowing you to
implement modules in any language that supports Unix pipe I/O. Its
behaviour is fully configurable, using a simple built-in language that
gives you full control over the request and reply list. It includes
versatile LDAP and SQL modules, and a full featured RADIUS client.

Changes: In this first release after a long time, a lot of enhancements
were made. The server implements full, database-driven proxying through
its flexible RADIUS client. Some example configuration and behaviour
files were updated, and a set was added for PostgreSQL. A module was
contributed to authenticate users against Windows NT servers. Some
improvements were made to the behaviour language, the logging module, and
the debugging output of the module interface, and a few bugs were fixed.

[057] - SwingSet 0.8.0-beta
  by Brian E. Pangburn (http://freshmeat.net/users/Yoda2/)
  Wed, Aug 11th 2004 15:28

Database :: Front-Ends

About: SwingSet is a Java toolkit that allows the standard Java Swing
components to be made database-aware. The SwingSet feature set includes
database binding for text boxes, combo boxes, and checkboxes, masked
editing of text boxes, binding of a "hidden" numeric column for combo
boxes with text choices (e.g. 0, 1, and 2 are stored for "Yes," "No," and
"Maybe," respectively), population of combo boxes based on columns in a
database query (can also be used for combo box-based record navigation), a
graphical record navigator (allows for database traversal, insertion,
deletion, commit, and rollback), and a data grid component (with support
for spreadsheet cut & paste) for creating datasheet/spreadsheet/table
views of queries.

Changes: For the latest version all components have been made into Java
Beans, which will allow for better integration with Java IDEs. Major
usability enhancements include cut and paste support from the data grid
to/from spreadsheet programs and/ or other data grids, addition of current
record index and total record count to the data navigator, and default
selection of an "empty" item for combo boxes. Finally, this release

  Wed, Aug 11th 2004 15:30

System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: The sysstat package contains the sar, mpstat, and iostat commands
for Linux. The sar command collects and reports system activity
information. This information can also be saved in a system activity file
for future inspection. The iostat command reports CPU statistics and I/O
statistics for tty devices and disks. The statistics reported by sar
concern I/O transfer rates, paging activity, process-related activites,
interrupts, network activity, memory and swap space utilization, CPU
utilization, kernel activities, and TTY statistics, among others. Both UP
and SMP machines are fully supported.

Changes: The value for file-sz reported by sar -v was a number of free
handles, and not a number of used ones. This is now fixed (and this is
really now a number of used file handles). This release will ask during
the config stage for the directory where sadc will be located. The sa1
script uses '-' to specify the current daily data file instead of
guessing its name using the current date. NLS has been updated to be
consistent with GNU gettext standards.

Database :: Front-Ends
Software Development

About: Tulip is a PHP-GTK based editor for PHP. It has an interface that
allows you to set up your projects and deal with them in a distinct way
through an intuitive file explorer tree. It has CVS controls, making it
possible to create, update, and delete remote files seamlessly from a CVS
server, allowing the programmer to manage several big projects with
individual organization for each project. It has controls that lock work
files, enhancing security in a networked development environment. It has
auto-completion, syntax highlighting, and syntax hints, features provided
through GtkScintilla, and configuration files containing all of the syntax
rules. It has an embbed Database navigator with which you can access MySQL
or PostgreSQL, make queries, and edit or delete records.

Changes: This release has built-in documentation, improvements on debug,
new shortcuts, many bugfixes, new menu items, caret lines, braces
highlighting, a new "open recent" menu option, and new word wrap.

[065] - TwinDB 0.1
  by Steve Dekorte (http://freshmeat.net/users/SteveDekorte/)
  Wed, Aug 11th 2004 10:28

Database
Database :: API
Database :: Database Engines/Servers

About: TwinDB is an embedded key/value database based on BerkeleyDB. It
basically adds security from database corruption on top of the
non-transactional version of BerkeleyDB. It accomplishes this by
maintaining twin BerkeleyDB databases and using "lock" files to indicate
when a set of writes are in progress. Performance is still good (tested at
~60K writes/sec and 300K reads/sec). It was written because the
transactional version of BerkeleyDB is expensive.

[066] - viewglob 0.8.1
  by Stephen Bach (http://freshmeat.net/users/sjbach/)
  Wed, Aug 11th 2004 15:32

Desktop Environment :: Tools
Other/Nonlisted Topic
System :: Shells

About: viewglob is a utility designed to complement the Unix shell in
graphical environments. It tracks changes in the command line as they are
typed, and shows globbing and expansion information in a display showing
the layout of relevant directories.

Changes: This release fixes a series of bugs which caused the display to
surrender if the user typed too quickly. Also, long command lines will no
longer cause the display to grow, and directory layouts are now a little
easier on the eyes. There are miscellaneous other bugfixes.

[067] - Visopsys 0.41
  by Andy McLaughlin (http://freshmeat.net/users/andymcl/)
  Wed, Aug 11th 2004 05:12

System :: Operating System Kernels

About: Visopsys is an alternative operating system for PC compatible
computers. Under development since late 1997, this system is small, fast,
and open source. It features a simple but attractive interface, real
preemptive multitasking, and virtual memory. Though it attempts to be
compatible in a number of ways, Visopsys is not a clone of any other
operating system. You can demo the distribution from a "live" CD or floppy
disk.

Changes: This is supplemental/bugfix release, with some added features,
including the ability of the Disk Manager to move partitions in contiguous
space (i.e. it can "slide" them from side to side), a configuration file
editor, and a program for choosing keyboard layout. A number of tweaks
were also made to the graphical components and GUI user settings, such as
clickable slices in the Disk Manager, "color chooser" dialog boxes, and an
optional desktop clock.

About: WxLib is a widely resuable C++ library that converts many
facilities that are found in the standard C library into a form that is
more appropriate for use in a C++ context. The library wraps functions for
dealing with threads, files, FIFOs, serial I/O, sockets, and directories.
It focuses on the correct use of C++ functions, and especially on the
correct use of error handling mechanisms.

Changes: This release has a bugfix in WyDate.

[069] - xlSQL Y4.2
  by Jim Caprioli (http://freshmeat.net/users/jimcp/)
  Wed, Aug 11th 2004 01:09

Database
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: xlSQL is a JDBC Driver for Excel, CSV, and other document data
sources. Documents can be read and written with SQL as if they were tables
in a database. In the case of Excel, xlSQL maps a directory with Excel
files to a database, workbooks to schemas, and sheets to tables. These
tables can be queried with the full SELECT syntax of either the HSQLDB,
MySQL, or McKoi SQL dialect. Native xlSQL is a rich subset of SQL for
creating, altering, and populating documents.

Changes: This is an interim release containing a prototype of the
forthcoming CSV JDBC driver. The CSV JDBC Driver is functional for CSV
files of the Microsoft format. The CSV JDBC Driver supports the complete
SQL dialects of either HSQLDB, MySQL, or McKoi. This release contains a
new driver kernel for both Excel (not included) and CSV.

[070] - Xmame-fe 0.4
  by gradbert (http://freshmeat.net/users/gradbert/)
  Wed, Aug 11th 2004 10:09

Games/Entertainment :: Arcade

About: Xmame-fe is a frontend for xmame. One important feature is that it
uses the output from the xmame executable itself to build the list of
options you can use. This is so it won't break when the command line
options change. The other useful feature is that you can easily switch
between multiple configurations.

Changes: This release adds the ability to have a favorites list. A
configuration can now specify an alternate xmame executable to run, but
the configuration window will still only give you the options for the
default executable. Right-clicking on a game will now bring up the game
menu.
