About: MUSCLE (Multi User Server Client Linking Environment) is an N-way
messaging server and networking API. It is portable to any OS with a POSIX
TCP sockets API and a modern C++ compiler. It lets programs communicate
over a network via streams of serialized Message objects (which are very
similar to BeOS's BMessages). The included server program ("muscled") lets
its clients message each other and store information in its server-side
hierarchical database. The database supports flexible queries via
hierarchical wildcarding, and "live" updates via a subscription mechanism.
It may also be customized via subclassing if application-specific
server-side logic is needed.

Changes: Support for setting the priority of Qt-based threads was added,
and a few minor bugs in the FileDescriptorDataIO class and the assembly
byte-swapping routines were fixed. The code was cleaned up for compilation

About: SoundRuler is a tool for acoustical analysis, graphing, and
teaching. It interactively recognizes and measures about 35 temporal and
spectral properties of each pulse within each call in a file. It features
acoustic similarity routines, real-time filtering, auditory filtering,
graph batch production with extensive editing options, and didactic
modules.

Changes: Templates were added for exporting graphs. The Cross Correlation
module (CCA) was improved with the ability to play and plot sounds, to
load calls from a file, to load a whole folder with files for CCA, and to
define extra sound or not around the call. Control was added over playback
rate, so that fast and high frequency sounds can be heard at slower
tempos and lower frequencies. The compilation is now simpler, smaller,
and faster. The precision of the measurements of energy in the harmonics
was improved.

[062] - sptrace 1.4.0
  by Krzysztof Burghardt (http://freshmeat.net/users/KrzysztofBurghardt/)
  Fri, Aug 13th 2004 07:33

Security
System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring

About: sptrace is a secure ptrace() module for Linux. It limits users'
access to the ptrace() call. It can disable ptrace altogether, or if you
add a ptrace group to your system, only users in that group will be able
to use ptrace().

Changes: This release has been rewritten for the 2.6 kernel (whilst
maintaining 2.4 support), includes a module parameter to define the group
allowed to use ptrace(), and improves logging.

[064] - SwingSet 0.8.1-beta
  by Brian E. Pangburn (http://freshmeat.net/users/Yoda2/)
  Fri, Aug 13th 2004 14:18

Database :: Front-Ends

About: SwingSet is a Java toolkit that allows the standard Java Swing
components to be made database-aware. The SwingSet feature set includes
database binding for text boxes, combo boxes, and checkboxes, masked
editing of text boxes, binding of a "hidden" numeric column for combo
boxes with text choices (e.g. 0, 1, and 2 are stored for "Yes," "No," and
"Maybe," respectively), population of combo boxes based on columns in a
database query (can also be used for combo box-based record navigation), a
graphical record navigator (allows for database traversal, insertion,
deletion, commit, and rollback), and a data grid component (with support
for spreadsheet cut & paste) for creating datasheet/spreadsheet/table
views of queries.

Changes: The 0.8.0 default "empty" item for combo boxes was writing -1
rather than null to the underlying data source if another value was not
selected. In addition, the record counter recently added to the record
navigator to display the total number of records was not updating as
records were added or deleted. The record navigator button sizes have been
resized to make better use of available space. It is recommended that
anyone using 0.8.0-beta upgrade to 0.8.1-beta immediately.

[066] - tcshrc 1.6.0
  by Simos Xenitellis (http://freshmeat.net/users/simos74/)
  Fri, Aug 13th 2004 21:41

About: The tcshrc package provides a well-organised set of configuration
files that make full use of the advanced and often unknown features of the
tcsh shell. Features used are a comprehensive prompt setting, advanced
"set"s and "alias"es, bindkey support for the function keys, and
intelligent completion. A Makefile is included for a safe installation
procedure.

Changes: A new default prompt and a new ~/.tcshrc.local file that allows
users to keep local changes were added. The F11 bindkey was removed due to
usability issues. The completions file was updated from tcsh 6.13.00, buggy
completions were removed (including make and -co*), and a general cleanup
was made.

[072] - Wi.Ser Beta 0.2.1
  by dvdw (http://freshmeat.net/users/dvdw/)
  Fri, Aug 13th 2004 01:37

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Wi.Ser is a Java/XML server-side GUI-framework which enables an
application to run as either a monolithic Swing app, a client/server Swing
app, or as a Web app without any change. It includes a mixed deployment
mode, which supports one server to serve Swing clients and Web clients at
the same time. The framework uses XML to define an application's GUI. It
provides a common widget-based, object-oriented programming interface for
Web and Swing GUIs, which prevents the developer from struggling with HTML
and HTTP or with the internals of Swing. For Swing client/server
applications the client/server split as well as the client/server
communication is handled transparently by the framework. The project
includes a GUI builder that is based on the framework's functionality
(screenshot, deployed as a Web/HTML application).

Changes: The WebComboBox now handles the submit event correctly, the
WebScrollPane now renders correctly in the case of being resized via
mouse-drag, and the WebPullDownMenu now renders correctly in the case of
being used in an MDI environment.
