Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Atris Framework is a fully functional platform independent GUI
framework based on the Java/Swing API. It provides an advanced GUI screen
editor with features including an abstract data layer, pre-built Design
Patterns, data set to visual component mappings, window management
(tiling, last position/size memory), database/app server login control,

relationship management, automated management of standard CRUD operations,
launching GUI applications from Web sites directly, table sorting, column
ordering, table searching, in-table editing, and the ability to import
existing visual components in addition to many other features.

Changes: Significant improvements, focusing on real world compatibility
issues to ensure that the framework can be used on any platform. Ease of
use concerns have been addressed, making the finished application easier
to use and more consistent. The Screen editor has been improved, with
additional functions (including UNDO) making screen development easier.
Additional examples and code samples have been added, and a new tutorial
document was created. Extensive work was done to ensure compatibility with
popular databases (a Compatibility suite), especially in the area of
auto-generated SQL code.

[005] - Big Faceless PDF Library 2.2.5
  by Big Faceless Organization (http://freshmeat.net/users/faceless/)
  Wed, Aug 18th 2004 07:51

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation
Office/Business
Printing

About: The Big Faceless PDF Library is a Java class library for creating
PDF documents. The Extended Edition offers the ability to create and edit
AcroForms, PDF's answer to the HTML form. Like HTML forms, PDF forms can
contain text boxes, radio buttons, and can call JavaScript functions. The
Extended Edition also includes a PDF reader for importing and editing,
along with FDF support and verification for Digital Signatures. Both
variations offer full Unicode support, encryption, embedded TrueType and
Type1 fonts, barcodes, hyperlinks, spot and calibrated color. Advanced
text layout engine enables complex HTML styles. It is small, fast, easy to
use, and 100% pure Java.

Changes: The memory footprint was reduced, especially when reading a
document using the PDFReader(File) constructors and when digitally signing
a doc when a Cache is in use. Reading a large document is around 15%
faster. DiskCache was rewritten to write to disk before a stream is
closed, if necessary, which allows large individual streams to be handled.
PublicKeyEncryptionHandler was added to read/write documents encrypted with
public keys. The "Stream still open" error was fixed except when cloning a
page that had had fields flattened on it. FormChoice fields no longer have
a "ghost" image. An error when reading documents containing a "Caret"
annotation was fixed.

[006] - Bygfoot 1.4.3
  by gyboth (http://freshmeat.net/users/gyboth/)
  Wed, Aug 18th 2004 05:47

Games/Entertainment :: Simulation

About: Bygfoot is a small and simple football (a.k.a. soccer) manager game
featuring the most important European leagues and cups. You manage a team
from one such league: you form the team, buy and sell players, get
promoted or relegated, and of course try to be successful.

Changes: The "1-2"-bug was corrected. This bug prevented you from entering
these two digits into fields like the structure field because they were
used as keyboard shortcuts for browsing forward and back. Browsing is done
with "q" and "w" now, and "q" quits the game only when the browse buttons
aren't shown (e.g. in main menu mode). Some minor transfer list bugs were
corrected. A bug that occurred when cup matches that ended drawn were
shown was fixed. A sorting bug which occurred when computing the tables
was corrected.

featuring the most important European leagues and cups. You manage a team
from one such league: you form the team, buy and sell players, get
promoted or relegated, and of course try to be successful.

Changes: The possibility to have messages shown instead of popups was
added. Extended stadium capacity enlargement possibilities were added. The
possibility to fire a player was added. A "Player actions" button was
added. The current skill and fitness display was changed a bit: the
current skill is now the skill that's really used when computing games
(except for the home advantage factor), and fitness can now be 100% and is
shown in different colors. A minor display bug was corrected.

System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: Chronic is a constraints-based opportunistic application-level
scheduler. Unlike cron, which schedules according to a time
specification, it schedules tasks when specified constraints are met. In
other words, it schedules during a window of opportunity when the
circumstances are favorable.

Changes: Syslog support has been introduced. SIGHUP handling has been
augmented to defer signals during task execution, since tasks can't be
safely interrupted. The scheduling algorithm has been improved.
emerge-later, an application which adds packages to be emerged (using
Gentoo's package manager, emerge) to the system crontab as only_once
tasks, has been added to the distribution.

[014] - dd_rescue data recovery tool 0.3
  by Antonio Diaz Diaz (http://freshmeat.net/users/ant_diaz/)
  Wed, Aug 18th 2004 08:23

System :: Recovery Tools

About: dd_rescue copies data from one file or block device (hard disk,
cdrom, etc) to another, trying hard to rescue data in case of read errors.
It does not truncate the output file if not asked to. So every time you run
it on the same output file, it tries to fill in the gaps. The algorithmn
will: read the non-damaged part of the disk, skipping the damaged areas;
try to read the damaged areas, splitting them into smaller pieces and
reading the non- damaged pieces, until the hardware block size is reached;
try to read the damaged hardware blocks until the specified number of
retries is reached, or until interrupted by the user; optionally, write a
list of bad blocks to a file.

Changes: dd_rescue can now read or write a list of bad blocks from or to a
file, making the rescue much more efficient.

[018] - dvipng 1.2
  by Jan-Åke Larsson (http://freshmeat.net/users/jalar/)
  Wed, Aug 18th 2004 07:56

Text Processing :: Markup :: TeX/LaTeX

About: dvipng makes PNG or GIF graphics from DVI files obtained from TeX
and its relatives. Its benefits include speed; it uses very fast
bitmap-rendering code for DVI files. On a fairly low-end laptop, it takes
less than a second to generate 270 one-formula images. Furthermore, it
does not read the postamble, so it can be started before TeX finishes. It
supports PK, VF, PostScript Type1 (via FreeType or t1lib), and TrueType
fonts (via FreeType), color specials, and more.

Changes: This release adds GIF support if the drawing library, libgd, is
new enough to support GIF writing. It also adds some command-line
switches: --picky, --noghostscript, --nogssafer, --gif, and --gamma. A few
portability issues have also been taken care of, as well as a bug in the
color special support.

specific code from reusable generic code. So far, abstract board games are
best supported. This software is written using GNU SmartEiffel. The package
comes with four abstract strategy games: Neutron, Hnefatafl, Stopate, and
Outwit.

Changes: This release adds a progress indicator for the computer's "think"
process and a button to show the last move again.

[026] - getmail 4.0.11 (Stable)

  Wed, Aug 18th 2004 16:58

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: getmail is intended as a simple, secure, and reliable replacement
for fetchmail. It retrieves email (either all messages, or only unread
messages) from one or more POP3, SPDS, or IMAP4 servers (with or without
SSL) for one or more email accounts, and reliably delivers into
qmail-style Maildirs, mboxrd files, or through external MDAs (command
deliveries) specified on a per-account basis. getmail also has excellent
support for domain (multidrop) mailboxes, including delivering messages to
different users or destinations based on the envelope recipient address.

Changes: This release changes oldmail file writing to save a few bytes of
disk space. There are documentation additions. Python's standard library
email.Message().flatten() could barf on certain types of badly
mis-formatted messages (instead of during instantiation, like the other
buggy cases). Hopefully, this is fixed in Python 2.4. A work-around has
been developed for getmail. There are changes to the "normal" output of
getmail to make it slightly less verbose.

About: Nail is a mail user agent derived from Berkeley Mail 8.1. It is
intended to provide the functionality of the POSIX mailx command with

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: News/Diary

About: RSSOwl is a wise SWT-based news aggregator. Its search feature lets
you hunt down the best RSS/RDF/Atom feeds on the Web, and then organize and
share your feeds with agility. Other features include an integrated
browser; AmphetaRate, for acquiring news tailored to your tastes;
full-text searching through headlines and descriptions; export feed
summaries to PDF, RTF, and HTML; the ability to import or export OPML; the
ability to exchange collections with others by importing or exporting
subscriptions; the ability to import or export user data to and from other
machines; automatic newsfeed upating; and much more.

Changes: Loading any number of feeds and aggregations now runs completely
in the background, allowing you to open feeds while a loading is running.
This not only removes the annoying "Please wait..." dialog, but also
improves the performance when loading aggregations. A comparison of time
it takes loading the 130 sample favorites resulted in 14.5 seconds for
RSSOwl 0.82b and 90.5 seconds for earlier versions. A lot of bugs have
been fixed.

System :: Archiving
System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Compression

About: Star is a very fast, POSIX-compliant tar archiver. It reads and
writes POSIX compliant tar archives as well as non-POSIX GNU tar archives.
Star is the first free POSIX.1-2001 compliant tar implementation. It saves
many files together into a single tape or disk archive, and can restore
individual files from the archive. It includes command line interfaces for
the "tar", "Sun-Tar", "cpio", "pax" and "gnutar" cmdline syntax. It
includes a FIFO for speed, a pattern matcher, multi-volume support, the
ability to archive sparse files and ACLs, the ability to archive extended
file flags, automatic archive format detection, automatic byte order
recognition, automatic archive compression/decompression, remote archives,
and special features that allow star to be used for full and incremental
backups. It includes the only known platform independent "rmt" server
program that hides Linux incompatibilities. The "rmt" server from the star
package implements all Sun/GNU/Schily/BSD enhancements and allows any "rmt"
client from any OS to contact any OS as server.

Changes: A new step towards an incremental restore implementaton has been
made. A bug that caused star to reject some lines in /etc/tardumps was
fixed. The speed of star -restore was increased by 1000 times. The
SCHILY.volhdr.dumptype= header has been activated, now deciding between
full dumps and partial dumps. The new option, -xdev, as added as and alias
for -M.

[069] - s11n 0.9.7
  by stephan beal (http://freshmeat.net/users/s11n/)
  Wed, Aug 18th 2004 08:28

About: s11n ("serialization") is a C++ library for easily serializing a
wide variety of objects, including PODs, arbitrary streamable types, and
user-defined Serializable types. It is completely data-format agnostic and
currently supports 7 data formats, including three XML dialects and one
MySQL-powered back-end. Its author, with atypical hubris, truly believes
s11n to be the most advanced, most flexible, simplest-to-use, and utterly
most powerful serialization framework ever implemented in C++.

Changes: Features were added to s11nconvert with respect to loading
DLLs/Serializers. A "special" magic cookie which supports redirection of
arbitrary serialized data to an arbitrary Serializer was added. This is
used by the mysql_serializer to save some data to files and some in the
database, without having to require the user to know that a database is
being used.

Software Development :: Build Tools

About: SCons is a software construction tool (build tool substitute for
Make) implemented in Python. It features a modular build engine that can
be embedded in other software. SCons configuration files are Python
scripts that call the build engine API. It can scan files to detect
dependencies automatically and maintain a global view of all dependencies
in a build tree, and uses MD5 signatures to detect changed file contents
reliably. Timestamps can be used if you prefer. SCons also supports
parallel builds and is easily extensible through user-defined builder and
 scanner objects.

Changes: Support for Fortran 90/95 and shared libraries on Mac OS X has
been added. Qt support is improved. New debugging and file manipulation
features have been added. Java can now be built from multiple source
directories. -Wa, -Wl, -Wp, and -pthread options from *-config commands
are handled properly. Visual Studio PDB files are now generated at link
time. Dependency handling of generated .h files has been improved.
Builders now always return lists of Nodes on all platforms. The
documentation has been enhanced. Many bugs have been fixed. Performance
improvements have been made.
