[001] - abcm2ps 4.6.7 (Development)
by Guido Gonzato (http://freshmeat.net/users/goccia/)
Mon, Aug 23rd 2004 05:24
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Conversion
About: abcm2ps is a package that converts music tunes from ABC format to
PostScript. Based on abc2ps version 1.2.5, it was developed mainly to
print baroque organ scores that have independant voices played on one or
more keyboards, and a pedal-board. It introduces many extensions to the
ABC language that make it suitable for classical music.
Changes: This release handles !head-xxx! on single notes, improved the
clef change algorithm, included wider helper lines for square notes, and
fixed a bug affecting the horizontal offset of rests.

System
System :: Systems Administration
About: AcpiTool is a Linux ACPI client. It's a small command line
application, intended to be a replacement for the apm tool. The primary
target audience are laptop users, since these people are most interested
in things like battery status, thermal status and the ability to suspend
(sleep mode). The program simply accesses the /proc/acpi or /sysfs entries
to get/set acpi values. Hence, a computer running a Linux kernel from the
2.4.x or 2.6.x series with ACPI enabled is needed.
Changes: A silly bug that prevented battery status from being reported in
some cases was fixed. Code cleanup was done. Some feature enhancements
were made.

Mon, Aug 23rd 2004 07:55
Communications :: File Sharing
Information Management
Internet :: Proxy Servers
About: The AnomicHTTPProxy is a caching proxy. Pages that pass the proxy
are indexed and can be searched using a built-in HTTP server. Proxies can
connect each other and form a p2p-based index exchange network, based on
distributed hash tables. The proxy can therefore be used as a global
search and distributed indexing engine. A specialized database engine is
included, which makes installation and running the proxy very easy. Other
features are: blacklisting (URL filtering) with blacklist distribution,
and access control with IP filters and/or HTTP authentication.
Changes: A new Index Administration menu item was added, so the Reverse
Word Indexes may now be inspected. Each reference in a word index can be
displayed in detail, and optionally can be deleted. Minor bugfixes were
made in bootstrapping. Major bugfixes were made in index storage (with a
better normal form for URLs). Display of cache content in the Cache
Administration was improved.

Mon, Aug 23rd 2004 05:53
Communications :: Email
Security
Security :: Cryptography
About: C1 SecureMail Gateway is a central, server-based software solution
which provides encryption and digital signatures for the entire email
traffic of an organization. It works with organizational certificates and
certificates for individual users, groups or organizational units. It
provides its services transparently to end users. C1 SecureMail Gateway
automatically finds the certificates of external users or companies via
the Internet. Secure email traffic to customers, suppliers, and partners
is easily established, no matter whether or not they also deploy C1
SecureMail Gateway. Packages for Red Hat and SuSE are available for
download.
Changes: A bug in the handling of messages with multiple recipients with
the same SMGW action (i.e. sign, signcrypt) was fixed. Such messages are
no longer split into separate messages, thus improving performance
significantly. There is a new option available for the incoming security
footer, which allows you to append the footer into the first mail body
part. The inbound policy setting for "plain" messages had been applied to
decrypted mails too, and has now been fixed.

Mon, Aug 23rd 2004 09:03
Software Development :: Code Generators
About: Ccide reads a source file of C source code containing embedded
decision tables from STDIN, analyzes it, and expands the tables. All
statements not within a decision table are copied unchanged to STDOUT,
forming a compilable C source module. Erratic side effects are avoided by
evaluating all condition expressions exactly once and by performing all
evaluations and actions in the original sequence.
Changes: Ccide now works on Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris platforms.

[016] - color wrapper 1.0.4
by vade79 (http://freshmeat.net/users/vade79/)
Mon, Aug 23rd 2004 07:50
Desktop Environment
Desktop Environment :: Application Themes
Desktop Environment :: Application Themes :: Shells
About: cw is a non-intrusive real-time ANSI color wrapper for common
Unix-based commands. It is designed to simulate the environment of the
commands being executed, so that if a person types 'du', 'df', 'ping',
etc. in their shell it will automatically color the output in real-time
according to a definition file containing the color format desired. It
has support for wildcard match coloring, tokenized coloring,
headers/footers, case scenario coloring, command-line- dependent
definition coloring, and includes over 50 pre- made definition files.
Changes: The "CW_SHLVL" environment variable check was added to limit the
environment which will be colored. The "other" definition instruction was
added to define alternate program executions. smbstatus, showmount,
tracepath, quotastats, praliases, nfsstat, pmap_dump, services
, and
syslog pre-made definition files were added. The df and lastlog pre-made
definition files were revised.

[017] - Conary 0.7.6
by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
Mon, Aug 23rd 2004 13:27
Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup
About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather then having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.
Changes: Installation: Hardlink handling, enhanced debugging capabilities
(including saving a debugging state file to enable remote debugging),
using binary file ids and iterators for significant memory savings, and
runtime support for the x86.x86_64 sub-architecture. Cooking: more robust
handling of the --resume option, and policy normalizing where app-defaults
files go.

[018] - convmv 1.08
by Björn Jacke (http://freshmeat.net/users/bjoernjacke/)
Mon, Aug 23rd 2004 10:29
About: convmv converts filenames (not file content), directories, and
even whole filesystems to a different encoding. This comes in very handy
if, for example, one switches from an 8-bit locale to an UTF-8 locale. It
has some smart features: it automagically recognises if a file is already
UTF-8 encoded (thus partly converted filesystems can be fully moved to
UTF-8) and it also takes care of symlinks. Additionally, it is able to
convert from normalization form C (UTF-8 NFC) to NFD and vice-versa. This
is important for interoperability with Mac OS X, for example, which uses
NFD, while Linux and most other Unixes use NFC. Though it's primary
written to convert from/to UTF-8 it can also be used with almost any other
charset encoding. Note that this is a command line tool which requires at
least Perl version 5.8.0.
Changes: This release fixes a bug where files that were called "0" were
accidentally considered to not be UTF-8. The smart UTF-8 detection also
works when converting to other multi-byte encodings.

by Miguel Garvie (http://freshmeat.net/users/MiguelGarvie/)
Mon, Aug 23rd 2004 08:48
Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence
System :: Hardware
About: The Distributed Hardware Evolution Project allows the distribution
of a genetic algorithm evolving hardware designs across the Internet by
setting up an island on each client's PC which will evolve during idle
time. Individuals from these islands will migrate between each other as
they compete for survival. All source code is available at Sourceforge
under the projects named JaGa, DistrIT, and IslandEv. The source code is
generalizable to any genetic algorithm or distributed processing task.
Changes: Code for DebugLib (essential for the sub-projects DistrIT, JaGa,
and IslandEv) has been added to their file releases. Concurrency issues
when distributing multiple processor-intensive tasks with DistrIT across a
pool of computers have been resolved. JavaDoc commenting has been completed
for all three sub-projects, providing full documentation in the API pages.
Coupled with Getting Started guides, this makes it easy to start
distributing any process and to start a Genetic Algorithm search.

by Jakim Friant (http://freshmeat.net/users/jmodule/)
Mon, Aug 23rd 2004 13:38
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Multimedia :: Graphics
About: EzGallery was designed to quickly create and publish an HTML image
gallery. It is a GUI desktop application that was written for people who
want to publish a Web image gallery on a site that doesn't support PHP,
ASP, or CGI programs. It builds static pages that can be uploaded
("published") from within the program. It lets the user quickly create a
gallery project, add pictures, write captions and descriptions, pick
colors, and set the layout. Then, with a click of a button, it will create
the necessary thumbnails and HTML pages. It supports completely automated
uploading and updating of the gallery on a remote Web host.
Changes: Bugs with the layout preview and start wizard have been fixed. An
option to display a background image to has been added to the gallery index
page.

Mon, Aug 23rd 2004 23:58
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics Conversion
About: "Jpegpixi" is short for "JPEG pixel interpolator". It is a
command-line utility which interpolates pixels in JFIF images (commonly
refered to as "JPEG images"). This is useful to correct images from a
digital camera with CCD defects. Jpegpixi is unique in that it tries to
preserve the quality of the JFIF image as much as possible. Most graphics
programs decode JFIF images when they are loaded, and re-encode them when
they are saved, which results in an overall loss of quality. Jpegpixi, on
the other hand, does not decode and re-encode the image, but manipulates
the encoded image data, protecting the quality of the image as much as
possible.

Zope. Users create and manage content in Workgroups and publish them in
Publications spaces (Hierarchies) through a dedicated workflow. Managers
can easily set global and local roles for users (Workgroup Managers,
Members, Visitors, Reviewers, and Readers). All actions are available
through simple Web interfaces. Nuxeo CPS also features office document
integration, indexing, and conversion to HTML format; versioning; attached
comments; interactive services (e.g. mailing-lists); and skinning of
hierarchies.
Changes: Two new products have been added: CPSNewsLetters, a newsletters
generator, and CPSTypeMaker, a simplified interface for generating new
document types using a Web browser. Other than these two products, all
features should be fairly stable. All of the known issues with the other
bleeding edge products (CPSCalendar and CPSWebMail, for instance) have
been fixed. Changes in the interface include a new minibanner, a new
favicon, and better W3C and WAI conformance.

by Steven Dake (http://freshmeat.net/users/stevendake/)
Mon, Aug 23rd 2004 13:56
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
About: OpenAIS is an open source implementation of the SA Forum
(www.saforum.org) Application Interface Specification. The project
currently implements application failover, application defined
checkpointing, and cluster membership APIs. With this software it is
possible to write redundant applications that tolerate hardware,
operating system, and application faults.
Changes: Memory usage has been reduced from 20 MB to 3 MB at idle. Flow
control has been added to the library->executive connection so that the
executive doesn't assert when overloaded. Priorities have been added to
poll abstraction for fair servicing under overload. Some internal
interfaces have been reworked to support the flow control work. A bug has
been fixed where the executive would assert when the library stopped
responding.

[072] - Shared Crypto System 0.5
by Bart Somers (http://freshmeat.net/users/zon4jou/)
Mon, Aug 23rd 2004 10:26
Communications :: File Sharing
Security :: Cryptography
About: Shared Crypto System gives the user option to effectively
transparently encrypt files on a shared network filesystem, without
directly knowing which communication partner will open the file, without
needing to share a keypair. It uses Blowfish encryption and one "key"
(the passphrase) to decrypt the files. This prevents the hassle of
sharing lots of keys and choosing which key to use. It also has an option
to recode using a new "key", if for some reason the old key is no longer
trusted.
Changes: This release adds space-handling in filenames. Logging when
generating a key has been modified. It writes a warning instead of storing
a file directly.
