  by David Hilvert (http://freshmeat.net/users/dhilvert/)
  Fri, Aug 27th 2004 14:12

Multimedia :: Graphics

About: ALE is a program that can render high-fidelity images of real
scenes by aligning and combining many similar images from a camera or
scanner. The correct similarity between images is roughly that achieved by
a somewhat unsteady hand holding a camera.

Changes: This release fixes alignment bugs, adds a global search option,
and adds support for the OmniView OV7620 sensor.

Desktop Environment
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Playing
Office/Business

About: AntiRight is a lightweight and scripted desktop environment that
uses the Motif toolkit. Development is carried out with a minimalistic
philosophy in mind. The software consists of a text editor, a desktop
panel, a sticky note utility, system management panels, a file manager, a
calculator interface, a color/background selector, a command launcher, a
simple help system, an email and Web browser launcher, a theme selector, a
preferences utility, a series of system monitors including a graphical load
meter, and a CD player. The desktop panel consists of a launcher panel
button, a screen lock button, a virtual desktop switcher, an alarm
utility, a command launcher, a clock, a user counter, a load meter, and a
mail checker.

Changes: XPM icon support was added and such icons are now used by
default. A unified search and replace dialog was added and a toolbar was
added to the work area. Better session initialization was incorporated.
Uncomment, comment, and insertion of convenience text was added. If the
CVS version of yetanotherclib is installed, an interface definition
language is now available, parsing files specified after the -f option.
libcdaudio is now used by arcd if available.

[008] - CHOWNAT 0.07
  by Samy Kamkar (http://freshmeat.net/users/cp5/)
  Fri, Aug 27th 2004 14:07

Communications
Security
System :: Networking

About: CHOWNAT allows two machines behind two different NAT firewalls to
communicate even when there is no port forwarding or DMZ on either of
their routers. It does not require a middle man, proxy, spoofing, or DNS
tricks, and runs as an unprivileged user on both ends. It opens up a
direct tunnel between the two machines, even when both are behind NAT, so
that one can access services such as SSH or a Web server on the other.

Changes: Packet sequencing is now in place so that dropped packets get
retransmitted rather than losing them as in a normal UDP transmission. A
Windows executable version is also available. Other changes have been made
to increase the speed of the tunnel. Setting up the application is simple
and requires no installation or additional modules.

[015] - DKMS 2.0.0
  by lerhaupt (http://freshmeat.net/users/lerhaupt/)
  Fri, Aug 27th 2004 13:52

System :: Systems Administration

About: DKMS (Dynamic Kernel Module Support) is a framework where device
driver source can reside outside the kernel source tree so that it is very
easy to rebuild modules as you upgrade kernels. This allows Linux vendors
to provide driver drops without having to wait for new kernel releases (as
a stopgap before the code can make it back into the kernel), while also
taking out the guesswork for customers attempting to recompile modules for
new kernels. For veteran Linux users it also provides some advantages since
a separate framework for driver drops will remove kernel releases as a
blocking mechanism for distributing code.

Changes: This release has the following improvements over version 1.95. It
enables cross architecture building on 2.6 kernels (you must specify
--kernelsourcedir to get this to work). It has the ability to create Red
Hat version 1 driver disks that include kernel modules for the BOOT/i386
kernel. A bug in the default MAKE commands that DKMS uses has been fixed
so that it respects --kernelsourcedir.

can also be used as a standalone application to convert HTML to DocBook.
Additionally it comes with a Swing application to manage documentation
projects and to transform the resulting DocBook files to PDF.

Changes: This release adds support for javahelp. It also adds support for
user-customized fo drivers. A lot of minor improvements and bugfixes were
done.

  by milky (http://freshmeat.net/users/milky/)
  Fri, Aug 27th 2004 14:04

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: ErfurtWiki is a fast, user-friendly, and highly configurable
hypertext management system. It can store its pages and binary content
with MySQL, PEARDB/dbx/ADOdb, dba/dbm, PHP-RPC, or flat file databases. It
stands out from similar Wiki implementations in that it allows very easy
integration into existing Web sites, features case-insensitive WikiLinks,
extensive CSS support, multiple admin tools, is not GPLed, and includes
documentation. There are over 200 extension plugins, but everything could
still be compacted into one core "library" for easier installation and
handling. It is useful for larger sites as well as lightweight backend for
private homepages, due to its simple image uploading feature.

Changes: This major release brings many changes and additions. It includes
a much cooler database interface, enables PATH_INFO, is E_NOTICE cleaner,
brings structural changes in distribution, better CSS page fragmentation
and excessive typecasting for PHP5 compatibility. It adds a general
WikiApi interface with PingBack, XmlRpc, OpenSearch, WikiSync with
PHP-RPC, the WikiCommander (Web-based NC-clone), banned and blocked links,
QuickDiff action, RSS/Atom feeds, BlogMpi, cron scripts, RefererLog, XFN, a

[028] - FreeRADIUS 1.0.0 (Development)
  by Scott Langley (http://freshmeat.net/users/langles/)
  Fri, Aug 27th 2004 22:13

Security
System :: Networking

About: FreeRADIUS is a high-performance, highly configurable, and
feature-rich RADIUS server. Supported features include EAP (wireless
authentication, PEAP, TTLS), MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, LDAP, X9.9 token
cards, and many more. It comes with more than 50 vendor dictionaries, and
interoperates with many others. It is the only open source RADIUS server
that has implemented EAP, and it is currently deployed in multiple
million-user systems.

Changes: New 3GPP, 3GPP2, Propel, Karlnet, Sonicwall, Navini, Bristol
University, Valemont, and Mikrotik dictionaries were added along with
many more man pages for the modules. Tests indicate that the server is up
to 30% faster with dictionaries using the new red-black tree
implementation. The queue of input requests was de-coupled from the pool
of threads, allowing "spikes" of requests to be queued, even though all
threads are busy, significantly increasing the servers ability to process
large numbers of requests on a multi-CPU machine. Many minor bugfixes and
feature enhancements were made.

About: getmail is intended as a simple, secure, and reliable replacement
for fetchmail. It retrieves email (either all messages, or only unread
messages) from one or more POP3, SPDS, or IMAP4 servers (with or without
SSL) for one or more email accounts, and reliably delivers into
qmail-style Maildirs, mboxrd files, or through external MDAs (command
deliveries) specified on a per-account basis. getmail also has excellent
support for domain (multidrop) mailboxes, including delivering messages to
different users or destinations based on the envelope recipient address.

Changes: Getmail raised an exception after processing all accounts, while
printing a summary, if "verbose" was set to 2. This has been fixed.

[031] - Gnome-Dial 0.0.1
  by Stefano D'Angelo (http://freshmeat.net/users/daste/)
  Fri, Aug 27th 2004 18:24

About: Gnome-Dial is a user-friendly PPP dialer for GNOME 2. The idea is
to give GNOME 2 users a usable, fully-featured, GNOME-integrated, clean,
and fast interface to the PPP package in order to make dialup connections
easily. Other tools often need other programs like WvDial to make
connections, or are not so clean, fast, or well-integrated with the GNOME
interface. At the moment, it is a frontend for PPP, but it will at some
point begin to include new features and its own configuration files to
represent modems, connections etc. However, it will not try to replace the
PPP package. The package will soon include a configuration generator..

Text Editors
Text Processing

About: GNU Aspell is a spell checker designed to eventually replace
Ispell. It can either be used as a library or as an independent spell
checker. Its main feature is that it does a superior job of suggesting
possible replacements for a misspelled word than just about any other
spell checker out there for the English language. Unlike Ispell, Aspell
can also easily check documents in UTF-8 without having to use a special
dictionary. Aspell will also do its best to respect the current locale
setting. Other advantages over Ispell include support for using multiple
dictionaries at once and intelligently handling personal dictionaries when
more than one Aspell process is open at once.

Changes: The two major changes in this release are support for affix
compression and better Unicode support. Other significant changes include
an enhanced SGML filter, support for loadable filters, and customizable
filter modes.

features esound provides, polypaudio has an extensible plugin
architecture, support for more than one sink per source, better
low-latency behavior, the ability to be embedded into other software, a
completely asynchronous C API, a simple command line interface for
reconfiguring the daemon while running, flexible and implicit sample type
conversion and resampling, and a "Zero-Copy" architecture.

About: Pre Make Kit (PMK) aims to be a BSD alternative to GNU autoconf,
GNU libtool, and pkg-config. It uses data files instead of scripts to
limit the spreading of trojans in software packages. It's designed to be
easy to use for users and developers. For better portability and
efficiency, all of the components are written in C. Requirements are a
POSIX system, a C compiler, the Bourne shell, and a make tool.

Changes: This snapshot is mainly a bugfix for pmk.conf parsing. It also
contains a new C++ binary building sample. The C binary sample has been
updated and activated. A backup feature has been added to pmksetup.

[074] - Supybot 0.79.9
  by jemfinch (http://freshmeat.net/users/jemfinch/)
  Fri, Aug 27th 2004 09:19

Communications :: Chat :: Internet Relay Chat

About: Supybot is a clearly-written Python IRC framework and bot, intended
to be both easily extensible and very flexible. Several modules are
included by default. Numerous plugins are already written, including
Google, Factoids, RSS, Quotes, and Relay. Plugins and their commands
achieve greater utility via command nesting, something that no other IRC
bot does. The user database is based on "capabilities" rather than obscure
flags or arbitrary numeric "userlevels", giving the bot flexibility and
fine-grained control (think ACLs vs. standard *nix permissions).
Developing your own additions to the bot is simple with the base classes
provided; writing a new command for the bot is as simple as writing a
function. Unlike many other IRC frameworks, this simplicity is achieved at
no cost to generality, which lets new programmers and old programmers alike
feel at home in the framework.

Changes: This release adds a large number of enhancements and bugfixes.
New plugins include Infobot, Nickometer, Later, Anonymous, Currency,
Format, KeepAlive, NickCapture, XMLLogger, ChannelRelay, and Tail. The
Infobot plugin now provides close emulation of the original Infobot.
Significant enhancements have been made to the Services, Topic, and Status
plugins. Multi-server use no longer requires the Relay plugin. Many
configuration options have been added and many bugs fixed. Significant
enhancements have been made to the core code to make it even more
configurable and flexible.
