Agile Practices
by Dean Margerison (http://www.dekam.net/)

There is a fundamental sea change happening in the industry around us, a
move away from prescriptive top-down mandates to implement a methodology
to a developer-led "viral adoption" of Agile Practices. But exactly how
widespread is this movement?

About: Ansel is a picture gallery for web sites. It is a high quality,
information-rich photo gallery, designed to handle large numbers of images
and albums. It stores all its images in a database, making it both fast and
flexible. Ansel is similar in spirit to Shutterfly and Yahoo pictures, but
does not place restrictions on image size.
Changes: The program was enhanced to be able to handle larger galleries
with many albums. New per-user accounts and a stronger sense of album
creator facilitate the management of a large picture gallery. A new
security structure allows locked and private (hidden) albums. Finally,
new database indexes greatly speed page viewing for large albums.

[009] - dd_rescue 1.04
by Kurt Garloff (http://freshmeat.net/users/garloff/)
Sat, Aug 28th 2004 19:53
System :: Recovery Tools
About: dd_rescue copies data from one file or block device to another. It
is intended for error recovery, so, by default, it doesn't abort on
errors, and doesn't truncate the output file. It uses large block sizes
to quicken the copying, but falls back to small blocks upon encountering
errors. It produces reports that allow you to keep track of bad blocks.
Changes: Some bugs have been fixed and some features have been added. The
avg CPU load does not overflow any more. The end report is written to the
log file even for -q and if no errors occur. -d/D can be used to use
O_DIRECT on input/output. -p copies the timestamp and file owner and
permissions. A larger soft block size (64k instead of 16k) is used by
default. The program now also aborts on ENXIO, ENODEV, and EPERM. There
were also minor code cleanups.

About: Herenow is a small utility based on the locate system. It combines

according to the types of files. (ex: command editor ; type text)." Also,
hn can be recived command as argument.

[018] - IQ 0.9.2
by f0rked (http://freshmeat.net/users/f0rked/)
Sat, Aug 28th 2004 19:56
Communications :: Chat :: Internet Relay Chat
About: IQ is an intelligent IRC robot framework. It is modular, and can
dynamically load and unload modules. Writing modules for the bot is
simple, and any PHP developer should be able to write his or her own
modules to have the bot act as needed. IQ modules utilize a binding system
(modeled after that used by eggdrop) which creates triggers that can be
executed upon any regular event (msg, join, kick, nick, quit, part, etc.),
as well as other bot-specific events (idle, connect, disconnect), and call
a lambda-style function in the module to perform the desired action.
Several official modules are included: weather, Google searching,
gametiger.net searching, DNS, acronym finder, and an intelligent
auto-oping module.
Changes: This version dramatically increases mode support and gathering
of server information. Command line options and process control support
were added to allow alternate configuration files and forking into the
background. A new automode module was introduced to maintain all channel
user modes (+o, +v, +h, etc.).

Religion
About: Scout Tracker tracks Boy Scout advancements towards their Eagle
Scout. Scouts can monitor their camping nights, service hours, and
leadership. Scoutmasters can let the boys know about incomplete
requirements without affecting advancement records. Worksheets created for
the scouts are stored in a database for easy view and hide access. Scouts
can view the progress of all scouts to enable them to find other scouts
who need to work on the same requirement or merit badge. Only leaders and
administrators can change data on the site. The best part is that parents
and scouts can access their information anytime they want without having
to call the Scoutmaster.
Changes: This release fixes some major security bugs regarding passwords
and user groups. It fixes date fields to accept multiple types of date
formats and reformat them for MySQL date format. It changes main.css to
accommodate a more updated look to pages.

[035] - Spamikaze 0.2 (Development)
by Rik van Riel (http://freshmeat.net/users/riel/)
Sat, Aug 28th 2004 19:57
Communications :: Email :: Filters
About: Spamikaze is an automated spam blacklisting system that attempts to
make it as annoying to send spam as it is to receive spam, while at the
same time making it possible for anybody to get legitimate email through
to its destination. Spamikaze implements MTA and DNSBL level filtering,
but unlike open proxy or open relay lists it doesn't rely on any
vulnerability tests. It simply tries to turn the tide against spam by
introducing a system that doesn't scale for people who send unsolicited
bulk email but should work fine for everybody else.
Changes: This release simplifies configuration, improves the flexibility
of the expiry policy, implements a new database layout, and cleans up the
code.

Sat, Aug 28th 2004 05:37
Communications :: Email :: Filters
About: t-prot (TOFU Protection) is a filter which improves the readability
of email messages and Usenet posts by hiding some of their annoying parts.
The annoyances it handles include mailing list footers, signatures, TOFU,
sequences of blank lines, and repeated punctuation. TOFU is an acronym
that stands for "Text oben, Fullquote unten", a German reference to the
practice of adding just a few lines of original text and quoting a
complete message below them.
Changes: A new option for better MS-style TOFU treatment has been added.
GnuPG locales have been updated to match the new gnupg-1.2.6. Some minor
fixes have been applied.

About: tcpick is a textmode sniffer that can track TCP streams and saves

colors too).

when all the first "num" tracked connections are marked as CLOSED), the
option "-Tfnum" to stop tracking new connections when "num" is reached, a
balanced AVL tree to the IP lookup engine, and several bugfixes. It now
works successfully under OpenBSD and NetBSD.
