[001] - 4tH compiler 3.4e-pre5 (Development)
by HanSoft (http://freshmeat.net/users/hansoft/)
Tue, Aug 31st 2004 02:45
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Libraries
About: 4tH is a Forth compiler with a little difference. Instead of the
standard Forth engine it features a conventional compiler. 4tH is a very
small compiler that can create bytecode, C-embeddable bytecode, standalone
executables, but also works fine as a scripting language. It supports over
85% of the ANS Forth CORE wordset and features conditional compilation,
pipes, files, assertions, forward declarations, recursion, include files,
etc. It comes with an RPN calculator, line editor, compiler, decompiler,
C-source generators, and a virtual machine.
Changes: The complete ANS MEMORY wordset was added to the library. A few
other changes and additions were made, including a library member that
writes Excel files.

[002] - AcpiTool 0.2.4
by DLeemans (http://freshmeat.net/users/dleemans/)
Tue, Aug 31st 2004 00:09
System
System :: Systems Administration
About: AcpiTool is a Linux ACPI client. It's a small command line
application, intended to be a replacement for the apm tool. The primary
target audience are laptop users, since these people are most interested
in things like battery status, thermal status and the ability to suspend
(sleep mode). The program simply accesses the /proc/acpi or /sysfs entries
to get/set acpi values. Hence, a computer running a Linux kernel from the
2.4.x or 2.6.x series with ACPI enabled is needed.
Changes: This release adds support for enabling/disabling wakeup devices.
It now uses autoconf/automake for compiling, building, and installation.
An acpitool.spec is included to build RPM packages.

[004] - Allen Bradley Ethernet utils 0.1.9
by Ron Gage (http://freshmeat.net/users/rongage/)
Tue, Aug 31st 2004 12:27
System :: Networking :: Monitoring :: Hardware Watchdog
About: The Allen Bradley Ethernet Library (ABEL) allows a programmer to
read and/or write the data table of an Allen Bradley PLC-5, SLC5/05, or
Pyramid Integrator (PLC5/250). The library is constantly growing with new
functionality being added all the time. Example programs are included to
demonstrate the usefulness of the library and to demonstrate how to
interface to the library.
Changes: A bug in word_block_write where the packet size was reported
incorrectly has been fixed. A bug where the data types "BT" and "D" were
transposed has been fixed.

by zarr (http://freshmeat.net/users/zarr/)
Tue, Aug 31st 2004 00:11
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players
About: ANA-MP is a player for music files (modules) in the .MOD, .XM, and
S3M formats. It runs on any platform with a Java 1.3 implementation, and
can be used as a library for playing music in games or demos.
Changes: This release supports loading of XMs with more than one sample
per instrument. An ugly mixer bug that caused the left and right channel
to be slightly out of sync was fixed. This version no longer crashes if
an undefined instrument is played or if effects are applied to an
undefined instrument.

by Matthias Reichl (http://freshmeat.net/users/HiassofT/)
Tue, Aug 31st 2004 12:28
System :: Emulators
About: AtariSIO is a Linux kernel driver module plus a small set of tools
that implement the Atari 8-bit (400/600/800/XL/XE) computer series SIO
protocol. The kernel driver handles the low-level parts and provides a
simple interface for user space applications. This package contains two
tools: atariserver, an Atari disk drive emulator (similar to SIO2PC or APE
for MSDOS), and atarixfer, a tool to transfer disk images to/from a
connected Atari disk drive.
Changes: This release fixes kernel 2.6 issues that could lead to a kernel
crash and a bug in atarixfer which prevented writing 180k and 360k disks.

Text Processing
Text Processing :: General
Text Processing :: Markup
About: deplate is a tool for converting documents written in an
unobtrusive, wiki-like markup to LaTeX, DocBook, HTML, or "HTML slides".
It supports embedded LaTeX code, footnotes, citations, bibliographies,
automatic generation of an index, etc. In contrast to many wiki engines,
it is made for "offline" use as a document preparation tool. In this
respect it is similar to tools like aft or txt2tags. It aims to be
modular and easily extensible. It is the accompanying converter for the
Vim viki plugin.
Changes: The highlights of this release are a simple template mechanism
and an initial attempt at Docbook output (currently book, article, or
reference pages are supported). The layout of the user configuration
directory was modified and many other changes were made.

Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: IMAP
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: POP3
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
About: Domain Technologie Control (DTC) is a Web GUI for administration
and accounting for hosting services. Made up of a set of PHP scripts that
manage a MySQL database which handles all the hosting information, it
generates backup scripts, statistics calculation scripts, and config files
for bind, Apache, qmail, postfix, courier, dovecot, and proftpd, using a
single system UID/GID. It allows administrators to delegate the task of
creating subdomains, email, and FTP accounts to users for the domain names
they own.
Changes: The way non-resolveable domain aliasing is handled has been
improved: now it uses open_basedir like for normal vhosts, so users can't
screw up other users' files. Please note that this "hole" only happened
for very recent versions (should only be 0.15). Also, the installer now
checks if it is running under Debian. If not, it does not check for Apache
modules. It will be up to the Unix you are using to do the job.

Tue, Aug 31st 2004 07:17
Software Development
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
About: Elektra (formerly Linux Registry) provides a universal and secure
framework to store configuration parameters in a hierarchical key-value
pair mechanism, instead of each program using its own text configuration
files. This allows any program to read and save its configuration with a
consistent API, and allows them to be aware of other applications'
configurations, permitting easy application integration. While
architecturally similar to other OS registries, Elektra does not have most
of the problems found in those implementations.
Changes: The project name was changed from "Linux Registry" to "Elektra".
Because of that, many installed files were renamed, but there is also a
temporary binary compatibility right now. This release has been ported and
tested on BSD systems. The "kdb" command now has a shell-friendly
interface. Many improvements were made in the API documentation.

Changes: This release fixes a bug that would cause all hits, regardless of
host, to have the same session limit, updates the HTML on the admin screen
so the buttons display more cleanly, fixes a bug that caused the wrong
hits to be deleted/reset, makes the admin page show counters with 0 hits,

About: getmail is intended as a simple, secure, and reliable replacement
for fetchmail. It retrieves email (either all messages, or only unread
messages) from one or more POP3, SPDS, or IMAP4 servers (with or without
SSL) for one or more email accounts, and reliably delivers into
qmail-style Maildirs, mboxrd files, or through external MDAs (command
deliveries) specified on a per-account basis. getmail also has excellent
support for domain (multidrop) mailboxes, including delivering messages to
different users or destinations based on the envelope recipient address.
Changes: Enhanced warning diagnostics about non-accessible or non-writable
maildirs. The method of determining the name of the local host has changed;
it will only fall back to getfqdn() if the result of gethostname() does not
contain a dot. There are documentation enhancements.

About: JSX serializes Java objects to XML in one line of code. It has no
mappings or setup, and works for all objects, including the over 1,000
J2SE classes that rely on the Java Serialization standard. It just works.

can be serialized with no extra work: when developed, as they evolve, even
dynamically hot-loaded classes. Applications include transient persistence
for session management and document-style SOAP messages for Web services.

System :: Networking
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: Nmap is a utility for network exploration or security auditing. It
supports ping scanning (determine which hosts are up), many port scanning
techniques (determine what services the hosts are offering), version
detection (determine what application/service is runing on a port), and
TCP/IP fingerprinting (remote host OS or device identification). It also
offers flexible target and port specification, decoy/stealth scanning,
SunRPC scanning, and more. Most Unix and Windows platforms are supported
in both GUI and command line modes. Several popular handheld devices are
also supported, including the Sharp Zaurus and the iPAQ.
Changes: In this release, the core scanning engine was rewritten to be
faster, many hosts can be scanned in parallel, and it is gentler against
target hosts and networks. The UDP system has been overhauled to avoid
false-open results. Time estimates are provided for long scans in verbose
mode (-v). There is new "port scan pings" help against firewalled hosts.
An --exclude option allows hosts or subnetworks to be excluded from a
broad scan. Microsoft has foolishly crippled raw sockets in Windows XP
SP2, but the Window version works around this. Dozens of other
significant changes have been made.

System :: Systems Administration
About: pmacct is a set of network tools to gather IP traffic information
(bytes counter and number of packets). Aggregation of statistics is done
using simple primitives (MAC addresses, VLAN IDs, IP addresses, ports, and
IP protocol) that can be used alone or combined together to form complex
aggregation methods. Counters are either global or historical (broken at
fixed timeslots); Agent IDs allow distributed counters to be created. Data
is either stored in a memory table, in an SQL database (MySQL or
PostgreSQL), or printed to stdout; recovery actions are available to avoid
data loss during DB failures. Gathering packets off the wire is done either
using the pcap library or reading NetFlow packets.
Changes: Support for both NetFlow 'input interface' and 'output
interface' fields were added. The ID to packet/flow mapping engine was
enhanced and now supports the marking of flows with a finer granularity.
A new reset flag was introduced into the in-memory table to avoid race
conditions when using shared memory segments. Configuration handlers were
rewritten for better portability, and signal handler routines were
changed to accommodate SysV semantics. mmap() allocations were fixed on
SunOS and IRIX, and a new test checks how to obtain 'anonymous' shared
segments. Core to plugin communication was enhanced.

packaging and built-in sendmail integration. SRS is needed when forwarding
mail for SMTP authorization schemes that publish which IPs are authorized
to send mail from a domain (for example SPF - Sender Policy Framework). It
can also detect forged SMTP bounces by signing the return path for outgoing
mail.
Changes: Sendmail socketmap support.

[067] - s11n 0.9.10
by stephan beal (http://freshmeat.net/users/s11n/)
Tue, Aug 31st 2004 17:37
About: s11n ("serialization") is a C++ library for easily serializing a
wide variety of objects, including PODs, arbitrary streamable types, and
user-defined Serializable types. It is completely data-format agnostic and
currently supports 7 data formats, including three XML dialects and one
MySQL-powered back-end. Its author, with atypical hubris, truly believes
s11n to be the most advanced, most flexible, simplest-to-use, and utterly
most powerful serialization framework ever implemented in C++.
Changes: This release adds std::valarray support. std::list/map/vector
are no longer registered by default, because they chew up a lot of
compile time and normally aren't needed. s11n:: library_version() was
re-added. A couple of other minor changes were made.

Security
About: Securepoint Firewall and VPN Server is a high-performance
application designed to offer full protection for network assets. The
server is a complete firewall and VPN software system with an operating
system based on a secure Linux. VPN functions support PPTP and IPSec
(X.509 certificates, preshared, RSA signature). You can use the firewall
on a standard PC with 2 to 16 network cards (including Ethernet, ADSL,
ISDN, and Token Ring). It supports journaling filesystems and RAID. The
Security Manager offers a graphical user interface with many features,
different configurations, and advanced reporting and filter functions. It
is available for real-time analysis, traffic, alarm, IPSec, PPTP,
system-log, system-status, proxy, administration, and ISDN messages. It is
very easy to install and administer. The firewall server is connectable to
Securepoint IDS systems. The Securepoint Security Manager is available in
English, German, Polish, French, and Spanish, and works in online and
offline mode.
Changes: The kernel was updated to version 2.4.27-grsec.
High-availability support (bonding of network cards and trunking) and a
new nconfig console tool were integrated. A new rule wizard makes it
possible to easily create firewall rules for static NAT, IPSec, and
PPTP. The VPN now supports 3DES, AES, and Twofish encryption. A new and
faster rule engine was included. A freeware VPN IPSec client was added to
the CD-ROM image.

System :: Shells
About: sishell is a reverse (connecting) shellcode kit for x86 Linux,
FreeBSD, NetBSD, and OpenBSD. You may generate both regular shellcode (no
NULLs) and stand-alone ELF executables (e.g. for injection into Web script
vulnerabilities). It is distributed with a Makefile system, a custom ELF
brander (brandelf), and a C example code generator.
Changes: 0x0c and 0x0b terminates a sscanf() %s input string, so that the
program no longer generates 0x0c or 0x0b in the binary. The -X option was
added to scprocessor.c which can now generate ASCII-encoded hex output
for use with "printf", "echo -ne", etc. A bug in the BSD shellcode was
fixed.

[074] - StarPlot 0.95
by Kevin McCarty (http://freshmeat.net/users/kmccarty/)
Tue, Aug 31st 2004 21:07
Scientific/Engineering :: Astronomy
About: StarPlot is a GTK-based program, written in C++, which can be used
interactively to view three-dimensional perspective charts of stars.
Charts can be recentered, rotated, or zoomed in or out with a mouse click
(this can also, of course, be done via dialog boxes for more precision).
Stars may be viewed (or ignored) by spectral class and absolute magnitude.
Other features include support for both celestial and galactic coordinate
systems, the ability to display extended non-stellar objects, and a pop-up
Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. StarPlot is also packaged with starconvert, a
utility which converts line-oriented stellar data records to StarPlot
format. Most star data files available on the Internet can be converted
this way if a short file describing the original file format is provided
to starconvert.
Changes: This is the first version to support i18n, and a Castilian
Spanish translation is now available. Other new features include a "Save
to PNG" option and an improved star information dialog with sortable
columns. A new configure script option allows specifying the default Web
browser at compile time. The starconvert utility now has some support
for multiple star systems. Numerous other minor enhancements and bugfixes
have been made.
