[001] - Aewan 0.9.3
by Bruno T. C. de Oliveira (http://freshmeat.net/users/btco/)
Fri, Sep 10th 2004 14:09
About: Aewan is a curses-based program that allows for the creation and
editing of ASCII art. The user is able to move the cursor around the
screen by means of the arrow keys and "paint" characters by pressing the
corresponding keys. There are dialog boxes that allow the user to choose
foreground and background colors, as well as bold and blink attributes.
The user may also select rectangular areas of the canvas in order to move,
copy, and paste them. Aewan also supports "intelligent" horizontal and
vertical flipping (e.g., it converts "\" to "/", etc). What sets Aewan
apart from similar projects is the fact that it can work with multiple
layers and has the ability to turn transparency and visibility on and off
for each layer. A layer dialog is provided through which the user can
change the order of the layers. Thus, each layer can be edited
independently in order to generate a composite drawing. Instead of using
the layers for compositing, it is also possible to use the layers as
frames for an animation, thus enabling the user to create ASCII
animations. The file format is easy to parse, so it is easy to write a
terminal-based application that uses the Aewan files to display onscreen.
Aewan has been tested on the Linux terminal, rxvt, xterm, and the FreeBSD
console.
Changes: A few minor bugfixes (including some bugs that caused aecat to
segfault under certain circumstances).

About: Bonita is a flexible cooperative workflow system based on the
workflow model proposed by the ECOO Team, which incorporates the
anticipation of activities as a more flexible mechanism of workflow
execution. This flexibility allows a considerable speed increase in the
design and development phases of cooperative applications. The workflow
engine is built on EJB (Enterprise Java Beans). The system offers a
comprehensive set of integrated graphical tools for performing the process
conception and definition, the instantiation and control of this process,
and the interaction with the users and other applications.
Changes: This release adds a high performance instantiation mechanism,
user security constraints, and GraphEditor application improvement. Some
of the existing features have been improved or, in some cases, completely
rewritten. Some bugs have been fixed. New versions of the Bonita API and
Bonita user guide documents are available.

Communications :: Email :: Address Book
Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
About: Brutus is an Exchange connector and development framework that
offers access to all of MAPI and therefore to all versions of Microsoft
Exchange from version 5.5 onwards. It is a complete wrapping of all of
MAPI into a (large) set of CORBA interfaces. It enables any groupware
client to integrate seamlessly into any organization with large Exchange
deployments on an equal footing with MS Outlook. Being based on CORBA, it
is platform independent, and works equally well on Linux, the BSDs,
Windows, or wherever there is a CORBA implementation available.
Changes: The MAPIFunctions:: interface is now sitting at an EndPoint,
together with the BrutusLogOn:: interface. The sample code has not yet
been expanded to reflect the new bootstrap feature. Functionality to
create MAPI profiles at the server end was added to the BrutusLogOn::
interface. Some cleanups were made (with dead code removed). A few
reference counting fixes were made.

Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup
About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather then having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.
Changes: Developers can now specify explicit dependencies on files and
troves from within recipes. Shell scripts automatically cause file
dependencies to be added for the shell scripts themselves. Cooking with
local flag overrides (such as "kernel.smp = False") now works. The
"--resume" option can be used multiple times. Conary will no longer create
or use your ~/.gnupg file.

Software Development :: Libraries
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
About: CWXML is an high-performance, open-source C-language library for
parsing and generating XML and BXML formats with a straightforward API.
Initial testing indicates that it is 3 or more times faster than other
popular libraries such as expat and libxml2 at parsing XML and much
faster again with BXML, which is a straightforward, open,
patent-unencumbered binary-encoding format for XML data that is a
stand-alone work-alike drop-in replacement for an XML file that mirrors
the XML markup structures in a way that is similar to the in-memory
representations of many parser libraries.
Changes: This release fixes minor bugs in XPath processing, binary file
reading on Windows, and generating embedded quoting in attributes.

Fri, Sep 10th 2004 19:59
Games/Entertainment
Games/Entertainment :: Real Time Strategy
Games/Entertainment :: Turn Based Strategy
About: Freeciv is a multiuser reimplementation for Unix/X of the famous
Microprose game of Civilization. By default, the game is an improved Civ
II, but this can be customized; modpacks for near-100% compatibility with
Civ I and Civ II are included. Multiuser gameplay is real-time: in each
turn, all human players move concurrently. The game is designed to remain
fairly playable even on poor network connections. Freeciv can also be
played on standalone machines, and its AI players are a good challenge for
beginners. The source code comes with the server, two X clients, and non-X
clients for MS Windows and Amiga. Freeciv is released under the GNU
General Public License. It is maintained by an international team of
coders and enthusiasts, and is easily one of the most fun and addictive
network games out there.
Changes: Important compile fixes were made for some platforms. Game
balance adjustments were made. All buildings except wonders and space
parts are 30% cheaper. Some wonders are cheaper (Colossus, Copernicus,
Isaac Newton's, King Richard's, Oracle, and Shakespeare's). The submarine
has more attack and movement, and costs less. Reputation recovery was
fixed (it is now much slower). A few other minor bugfixes were made.

fluxbox, emelfm, links-hacked, ssh, tcpdump, nmap, chntpwd, and much more.
It provides full read-write support for NTFS partitions (using captive),
and the ClamAV virus scanner (including a fairly recent signature database
and a GUI). It also has a network boot facility.
Changes: This is mainly a bugfix and package update release. A bit of
testing has been done to ensure things are working as they should. Many
packages were updated, and a few tools were added. A script to create
boot floppies was re-added. There is a new Windows tools folder outside
the compressed image.

About: JH2N (Java host to named conversion program) converts a hosts file
to a full BIND 8 or 9 configuration. JH2N was inspired by the h2n.pl
program included in the O'Reilly "DNS and BIND" book. Various options are
available to enhance its operation by incuding external files. Using the
simple host file syntax, very large and complex zones can be maintained.
Changes: This release contains a number of minor changes and a rewrite of
the way messages and errors are handled. It fixes a bug in the formatting
of the serial numbers, adds an option to stop the use of the root.cache,
removes the default of allowing PTR duplicates, changes the -q to take an
optional numeric argument, detects and drops (with warning) duplicate
records on the same input line, detects and aborts on duplicate CNAME
records, and adds an -A (--abortlevel) option to control the level at
which the run will abort when it finds errors.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search
Multimedia
About: libextractor is a library used to extract meta-data from files of
arbitrary type. It is designed to use helper-libraries to perform the
actual extraction, and to be trivially extendable by linking against
external extractors for additional file types. The goal is to provide
developers of file-sharing networks, file managers, and WWW-indexing bots
with a universal library to obtain meta-data about files. libextractor
contains a shell-command "extract" that, similar to the well-known "file"
command, can extract meta-data from a file and print the results to
stdout. Currently, it supports the formats HTML, PDF, PS, OLE2 (doc, xls,
ppt), OpenOffice, MP3, OGG, WAV, JPEG, GIF, PNG, TIFF, RPM, ZIP, Real, QT,
MPEG, RIFF (AVI), ASF, and ELF. Various additional MIME types are detected.
libextractor can also be used to compute hash functions (sha1, md5). A Java

Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Electronic Design Automation (EDA)
About: PEP is a modeling and verification framework for parallel systems.
It provides a large number of different modelling languages (e.g. SDL,
B(PN)^2, Petri nets, Process algebras and Finite Automata), and
verification techniques (e.g. reachability and temporal logic model
checking). Due to its Tcl/Tk-based GUI, PEP is easily extensible to other
analysis or specification tools. The framework offers fully integrated
simulation and debugging features on all levels.
Changes: Major changes have been to the GUI and the net simulator. This
release offers a lot of convenience enhancements. The high-level net
simulator and its stand-alone version, netsim_server, have been fixed and
extended. The automaton editor has been fixed, and features automatic
graph layout. Many analysis tools have been fixed, updated, or newly
integrated. Due to the new tools available, this version needs at least
version 1.2.0 of PEP-externals.
