Custom Content Management with PHP
by Thomas Perl (http://freshmeat.net/~thp/)
Section: Tutorials
Sat, Sep 11th 2004 00:00

It is well known that you can create powerful Web pages with PHP. Often,
the question arises: How are these pages made? This tutorial wants to give
you some hints on how to make your Web site appear more managed from both
inside and outside. These are my own approaches to Web development; I hope
you find them useful. Take these things as ideas rather than good practice.

[001] - AdminPro 1.3.0
  by giorgos (http://freshmeat.net/users/georgiost/)

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: AdminPro is a user authentication class based on MySQL and the PHP
Session functions. It was written for Web sites that need some password
protected areas. It includes a user management application script and a
MySQL table setup application script. The class can allow a user to login
and logout via Web-based forms, expire the session of an authenticated
user if it passed a given session timeout, display error messages and
point the user to the login page when the user is not authenticated or the
login session expired, and check whether a logged user has administrator
privileges

Changes: A bug in the main class has been fixed: The function
makeErrorHtml() will now expire the "Remember Me" cookies (if the function
"Remember Me" is enabled), so that the error data will not be stored in the
cookies and the user can login again without having to delete these cookies
manually.

Scientific/Engineering :: Electronic Design Automation (EDA)

About: Alliance CAD System is a set of EDA tools and portable cell
libraries for VLSI design. It covers a wide range of the standard design
flow (from VHDL up to layout). It includes a VHDL simulator, RTL
synthesis tools, place and route tools, netlist extractor, DRC, and a
layout editor.

Changes: Many bugs were fixed in Loon and Boog, Graal, and others. Minor
Sxlib cell modifications were made to match 0.13 u. Improvements and new
features were added to Graal. New features were added to LAX format and
VASY.

[004] - autocutsel 0.7.0
  by Michael Witrant (http://freshmeat.net/users/bmbros/)
  Sat, Sep 11th 2004 00:39

About: autocutsel synchronizes the two copy/paste buffers mainly used by X
applications. It unifies "clipboards" between VNC servers and Windows.

Changes: A bug that occurred when the first copy came from the cut buffer
was fixed. The -selection parameter now works. The default selection was
changed from PRIMARY to CLIPBOARD, which has meant that text should be
copied and then pasted to be handled by autocutsel. Simply selecting the
text will only work in a few applications. The old behavior can be
reverted to by supplying the "-selection PRIMARY" argument.

  by Scarfy (http://freshmeat.net/users/Scarfy/)
  Sat, Sep 11th 2004 22:29

Games/Entertainment :: Arcade

About: Blob Wars: Metal Blob Solid is a 2D mission-based platform game.
Since their world was invaded by an alien race, the Blobs have faced a
lifetime of war. But now they have a chance to win the war once and for
all. In Episode I: Metal Blob Solid, you take on the role of a fearless
Blob agent, Bob. Bob's mission is to infiltrate the various enemy bases
around the Blobs' homeworld and rescue as many POWs as possible. But
standing in his way are many vicious enemies, other Blobs who have
defected and the evil alien leader, Galdov.

Changes: This version fixes the binary RPM build script to produce a
correct RPM and fixes a gameplay error in the Forgotten Caves.

Communications :: Chat
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Browsers
System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions

About: blueflops is a two-floppy Linux distribution with a graphical Web
browser (links) and an IRC client (tirc). The kernel has most of the
Ethernet drivers compiled in as modules (including the PCMCIA ones) and
PPP support (for dialup connections). The browser is linked with OpenSSL.
The scripts are all accessible by a setup script and have a nice dialog
frontend.

Changes: This release adds kernel 2.6.8.1, turns tirc blue, allows the
console colors to be changed, adds the game tetris-bsd, uses the busybox
"loadkmap" instead of "loadkeys", fixes PPP bugs, and adds a proxy setup
for the browser.

[007] - chroot_safe 1.3
  by Henrik Nordstrom (http://freshmeat.net/users/hno/)
  Sat, Sep 11th 2004 05:48

Security
System :: Systems Administration

About: chroot_safe is a alternative method for chrooting dynamically
linked applications in a sane and safe manner. By using a little dynamic
linking trick it delays the chrooting until after dynamic linking has
completed, thereby eleminating the need to have a copy of the binary or
libraries within the chroot. This greatly simplifies the process of
chrooting an application, as you often do not need any files besides the
data files within the chroot. In addition to chrooting the application,
it also drops root privileges before allowing the application to start.

Changes: This is a security update to remove the NEED_SETUID_WRAP option.
This option has been available since the initial release, but was turned
on by default in version 1.2. Only after the release of 1.2 was it
realized that this option actually invalidates part of the purpose of
chroot_save, as it not only nullifies setuid() and similar calls for the
application but also for chroot_safe itself, causing chroot_safe to not
drop root privileges. Users of version 1.1 are not affected unless they
have manually enabled the NEED_SETUID_WRAP option.

About: DHTTProxy is an HTTP/1.0 and 1.1 proxy server that uses filters
(programs that transform stdin to stdout, return with the HTTP status
code, and log to stderr) for virtually everything, including redirection,
downloading, caching, anonymizing, and content filtering. It is supposed
to be more extensible than squid-cache, since it's easy to write new
filters in nearly any programming language. It is simple to set up and
transparent. Most of all, it's supposed to be Free and not depend on any
non-Free software. The intended environment is on a gateway or internal
server for a small business or home, as it's not very fast.

[011] - Dnsmasq 2.14
  by Simon Kelley (http://freshmeat.net/users/simonkelley/)
  Sat, Sep 11th 2004 13:43

Internet :: Name Service (DNS)

About: Dnsmasq is a lightweight, easy to configure DNS forwarder and DHCP
server. It is designed to provide DNS and (optionally) DHCP to a small
network. It can serve the names of local machines which are not in the
global DNS. The DHCP server integrates with the DNS server and allows
machines with DHCP-allocated addresses to appear in the DNS with names
configured either in each host or in a central configuration file. Dnsmasq
supports static and dynamic DHCP leases and BOOTP for network booting of
diskless machines.

Changes: This release comprises a collection of tweaks to the DHCP server.
They improve RFC-compliance and fix a bug in interoperation with DHCP relay
agents. Support for RFC-951 BOOTP and RFC-3011 subnet selectors was added.
Compilation under NetBSD and Mac OS X was fixed.

Information Management
Information Management :: Document Repositories
Information Management :: Records Management

About: DoXFS (pron. docs-eff-ess) is a document management system that
uses the XFS filesystem to store both content (files) and meta-data (file
attributes), bypassing the traditional architecture of filesystem and
database, and leveraging the built-in advantages of XFS. Currently, it
offers a Web frontend based on PHP and standard management functionality
(create, delete, attributes add/delete, etc.) as well as extras such as
versioning and Full Text Indexing (using Namazu).

Changes: In the DoXFS Web Client, the ability for super users to view and
edit hidden properties of a document or topic object was added. Browse
lists are now sorted ascending from the entire list. A bug when creating
a new document where the title bar showed an incorrect creation date was
fixed, as was a bug where the topic tree was not refreshing after
creating a new topic. New indexes were added to DoXFS Server to support
the browse list sorting.

  by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
  Sat, Sep 11th 2004 06:55

Security
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: fwknop is a flexible port knocking implementation that is based
around iptables. Both shared knock sequences and encrypted knock sequences
are supported. In addition, fwknop makes use of passive OS fingerprinting
signatures derived from p0f to ensure the OS that initiates a knock
sequence conforms to a specific type. This makes it possible to allow,
say, only Linux systems to connect to your SSH daemon. Both the knock
sequences and OS fingerprinting are completely implemented around iptables
log messages, and so a separate packet capture library is not required.

Changes: This release adds the ability to specify multiple IPs/networks in
a single SOURCE definition, a better examples section in the fwknop
manpage, a bugfix to make sure the EMAIL_ADDRESSES variable does not
contain commas (any commas are translated into spaces), and the GPL
LICENSE file.

  Sat, Sep 11th 2004 13:25

Desktop Environment :: K Desktop Environment (KDE)

About: KOrganizer is the KDE PIM/Calendar/Scheduling tool. It is different
from other programs for Unix/Linux like ical or plan because it supports
vCalendar, a flexible, open Internet standard for exchanging calendar
information (for instance, Lotus and Microsoft both support it in their
products). For this reason, you can move to KOrganizer without losing your
existing data.

Changes: This release is part of KDE 3.3, but can be also installed on KDE
3.2. It adds recurrence on todos, a free/busy view, automatic uploading of
free/busy information to the server, and remote calendars with auto-update
and change notification. Working hour configuration was made more flexible,
as it is now minute-based, working days can be selected, and overnight
shifts are possible. Editing of more than one day in Journal (diary) view
is allowed. The holiday plugin uses the system's country by default.
Filters are now also applied to todo lists and to printing the todo list.

Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Mantissa is a collection of various mathematical algorithms in Java
aimed towards simulation. It features a small set of linear algebra
classes, a least squares estimator, some curve fitting classes, several
ordinary differential equation integrators (all supporting multiple
switching functions and dense output), vectors and rotations in a three
dimensional space, algebra-related classes like rational and double
polynomials, various orthogonal polynomials, some optimization algorithms
using direct search methods, and more.

Changes: An error has been corrected in the automatic stepsize
initialization for adaptive stepsize integrators. This error allowed too
small initial steps to be generated, leading to numerical cancellation
errors in the step handlers. In addition, a method has been added to allow

About: nut is nutrition software to record what you eat and analyze your
meals for nutrient composition. The database included is the USDA Nutrient
Database for Standard Reference, Release 17, which contains 6,839 foods and
128 nutrients. This database contains values for vitamins, minerals, fats,
calories, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, etc., and includes the essential
polyunsaturated fats, Omega-3 and Omega-6. Nutrient levels are expressed
as a percentage of the Daily Value, the familiar standard of food labeling
in the United States, but also can be fully customized. Foods can be added
from recipes or food labels, and nutrient intake can be graphed. The
program is completely menu-driven and there are no commands to learn.

[044] - Port Scan Attack Detector 1.3.3
  by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
  Sat, Sep 11th 2004 12:09

System :: Networking :: Firewalls
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: Port Scan Attack Detector (psad) is a collection of three
lightweight system daemons written in Perl and C that are designed to work
with Linux iptables firewalling code to detect port scans and other suspect
traffic. It features a set of highly configurable danger thresholds (with
sensible defaults provided), verbose alert messages that include the
source, destination, scanned port range, begin and end times, TCP flags
and corresponding nmap options, email alerting, DShield reporting, and
automatic blocking of offending IP addresses via dynamic configuration of
iptables firewall rulesets. In addition, psad incorporates many of the
TCP, UDP, and ICMP signatures included in Snort to detect highly suspect
scans for various backdoor programs (e.g. EvilFTP, GirlFriend, SubSeven),
DDoS tools (mstream, shaft), and advanced port scans (syn, fin, Xmas)
which are easily leveraged against a machine via nmap. Psad also uses
packet TTL, IP id, TOS, and TCP window sizes to passively fingerprint the
remote operating system from which scans originate.

Changes: The __WARN__ and __DIE__ exception handlers were fixed so that
they reference global message variables. Auto danger level assignments
were fixed. Network auto assignments and per-protocol assignments now
work. The SYSLOG_DAEMON variable was added to define which syslog daemon
is running. The ability to ignore both ranges and specific ports/protocols
was added with a new variable, IGNORE_PORTS in psad.conf. A bug in which
ipt_prefix counters were not being parsed correctly at import time was
fixed.
