[017] - ddrescue 0.5
  by Antonio Diaz Diaz (http://freshmeat.net/users/ant_diaz/)
  Wed, Sep 15th 2004 12:32

System :: Recovery Tools

About: ddrescue copies data from one file or block device (hard disk,
CD-ROM, etc) to another, trying hard to rescue data in case of read
errors. It does not truncate the output file if not asked to. So every
time you run it on the same output file, it tries to fill in the gaps. The
algorithm will: read the non-damaged part of the disk, skipping the damaged
areas; try to read the damaged areas, splitting them into smaller pieces
and reading the non- damaged pieces, until the hardware block size is
reached; try to read the damaged hardware blocks until the specified
number of retries is reached, or until interrupted by the user;
optionally, write a list of bad blocks to a file.

Changes: The badblocks file is now also saved if ddrescue is interrupted
while splitting damaged areas. A man page has been added.

reports of FW-1 logs with LIRE.

Changes: Changes include filter rules for audit logs, as well as general
enhancement of filter rules including support for negation of filter
arguments. fw1-loggrabber also supports additional output destinations,
such as files or syslog. A complete rewrite of the documentation was done.
The README file was replaced by a man page as well as HTML documentation.

  Wed, Sep 15th 2004 10:49

Desktop Environment :: K Desktop Environment (KDE)
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Writing

About: K3b is a CD and DVD burning application for Linux systems optimized
for KDE. It provides a comfortable user interface to perform most CD/DVD
burning tasks, such as creating an audio CD from a set of audio files or
copying a CD. While the experienced user can influence all steps of the
burning process, the beginner may find comfort in the automatic settings
and the reasonable defaults which allow a quick start. The actual burning
is done by the command line utilities cdrecord, cdrdao, and growisofs.

Changes: This is basically a fix for kernel versions 2.6.9 and higher. The
writer detection should work again, although there have been problems with
2.6.9-rc2 which may not be caused by K3b. It is still recommended that
users stick to kernel version 2.6.7 or use one of the patches to revert to
the "old" SCSI command handling.

[052] - scsidev 2.35
  by Kurt Garloff (http://freshmeat.net/users/garloff/)
  Wed, Sep 15th 2004 17:28

System :: Hardware

About: scsidev builds a list of devices on your SCSI busses and creates
device nodes to access them. The names are built based on their path,
which is a 4-tuple consisting of the host adapter number, the channel
number, the SCSI target ID, and the Logical Unit Number. Names build this
way are much more persistent than the enumeration scheme used by the
kernel (1st disk = sda, etc.). scsidev remembers the permissions of
disappeared devices and restores the permissions properly when devices
reappear. Optionally, it can create the devices as symbolic links to the
main device nodes in /dev/, create missing device nodes, and handle
missing permissions on the /dev/ nodes. You can assign alias names based
on various pieces of information, such as vendor and model name. It also
supports retrieving the serial number, the WWID, and the HSV OS ID and
allows assigning names based on this information, thus providing a unique
identification.

Changes: Many small bugs were fixed. sysfs has changed somewhat, and
scsisdev has been adapted accordingly. Some limits have gone as well:
longer host adapter names and partition names are possible now. A few
bugfixes (dump page lengths, block vs. char dev creation, SCSI dev type
overwriting in serial no retrieval, removal of the testdev dev node, and
channel specification in scsi.alias) have been necessary. The quiet option
works better now. To test missing sysfs support, -y has been added. ASCII
T10 date from EVP INQ 0x82 can be displayed as well. scsi.alias can be
placed elsewhere.

  Wed, Sep 15th 2004 10:38

About: SKEM is a sendmail milter, that checks and maintains a list of
whitelisted, temporarily banned, and permanently blacklisted
IP-addresses. How it obtains the entries is up to the administrator, but
the included logwatcher module provides one possibility. This milter does
not itself filter spam, instead it memorizes the verdicts issued by other
anti-spam defenses to reduce the system load and resource consumption, by
temporarily rejecting the relays suspected of spamming (banned) and,
optionally by permanently rejecting the relays "convicted" of spamming
(blacklisted). The idea is to stem the traffic from real spam sources,
while reducing the ill effects of false-positives to merely delaying,
rather than rejecting future messages.

Changes: A pointer-to-integer casting warning on 64-bit systems has been
eliminated. Although harmless, the warning was fatal due to the -Werror
flag.

Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Software Development

About: This Tiny Vector and Matrix template library uses Meta Templates
and Expression Templates (ET) to evaluate results at compile time, thus
making it fast for low-end systems. Temporaries are avoided because of
this. The produced code is similar to hand-coded code, but the quality of
the code still depends on the compiler and its version. The dimensions for
vectors and matrices are static and bounded at compile time using template
arguments.

Changes: Bugs have been fixed, documentation enhanced, and new regressions
added, as well as functions to handle memory references and to create
identity matrices. The code is cleaner now; unused code was eliminated and
identifiers are better named. There is better support for compiler
optimizations. This results in less compile time and higher run-time
performance.

[061] - uClinux 2.6.8.1-uc0 (2.6.x)
  by David McCullough (http://freshmeat.net/users/davidmc/)
  Wed, Sep 15th 2004 17:36

About: uClinux is a set of patches for Linux that supports MMUless
processors. It brings a full featured operating system onto platforms
that would otherwise run less advanced, simpler operating systems.
uClinux gives the programmer a Linux API with remarkably few concessions
to the lack of MMU (Memory Management Unit), and in terms of code size
and efficiency it has an advantage over standard Linux.

Changes: Support for the new Motorola Freescale 5270/5271 CPUs. MMU-less
ARM support has been integrated. This release has the latest kernel
version and a few minor fixes.

video-4-linux-2, IIDC cameras, and video-to-firewire converters.

Changes: This version enhances the support for Video-4-Linux 2 devices. A
new example to show how to save .jpeg images from the live stream was
added. The configure script was improved and should now disable all
plugins with missing dependencies. Some various compile issues and minor
bugs were fixed.

[064] - Visitors Web Log Analyzer 0.4
  by antirez (http://freshmeat.net/users/antirez/)
  Wed, Sep 15th 2004 02:05

Internet :: Log Analysis
Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: Visitors is a very fast Web log analyzer. It can process up to
150,000 lines/second of logs on a modern PC, outputs statistics in
plaintext or HTML, and can be used interactively in a pipe with less to
just see the stats quickly, or run via cron for the HTML output. It does
not require any kind of configuration, nor to know the format of the Web
log file to process.

Changes: This release features two new reports, 404 errors and pageviews
per visit, and the Google keyphrases report is now better looking and
shows the page number of the keyword on Google, and was fixed to be
case-insensitive. There are more sane exit codes. An option to handle
different timezone between server and Web users added. A bug in the
parsers was fixed. There were many other little changes.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics Conversion
System :: Archiving :: Compression

About: WebPack is a shell script for automatically packing Web sites by
shrinking them without affecting their functionality or appearance. It is
also useful for losslessly shrinking image collections and locating
corrupt files. It works by stripping unnecessary information and
optimizing the compression of images, and by removing comments/whitespace
from HTML, using readily-available tools.

Changes: This release catches (more) pngcrush failures, implements an
update mode (-u), implements a force overwrite mode (-f), has more sanity
checking, adds a 'readme' file, and has miscellaneous cleanups.

[068] - Xdebug 2.0.0beta1
  by Derick Rethans (http://freshmeat.net/users/opensrc/)
  Wed, Sep 15th 2004 12:33

About: The Xdebug PHP extension aids script debugging by providing a lot
of valuable information, including stack and function traces in error
messages, memory allocation traces, and protection from infinite
recursions. Xdebug also has a built-in debugging server which you can
access with a debug client to debug your scripts remotely. Stepping,
accessing data, and examining stacktraces are a few of the remote
capabilities.

Changes: This release adds a new debugger protocol, many new features, and
much better script tracing capabilities. Xdebug 2's profiler outputs the
same format as cachegrind and can be read by KCacheGrind.

[069] - XMMS Root Visualization Plugin 0.0.7
  by Johannes Jordan (http://freshmeat.net/users/FoPref/)
  Wed, Sep 15th 2004 21:30

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio

About: XMMS Root Visualization Plugin is a little XMMS plugin that draws
a spectrum analyzer directly to the background (root window) of X.

Changes: A segfault that occurred on startup was fixed along with a
problem where GNOME and KDE icons were overdrawn at startup and when
quitting. A workaround was implemented for cases where XMMS had problems
with the plugin being enabled on startup. Drawing issues involving falsely
drawn peaks and bars were fixed. The data manipulation config variables
were made stereo capable and an experimental "display" config was added
for specifying the X server.
