About: ddnsu is a dynamic DNS updating client that aims to be simple,
reliable, and above all very small. It works with services such as
DynDNS.org.

Changes: This release adds a rc.ddnsu script and a ddnsu.conf.sample, and
fixes a segfault in error reporting. When an error occurs, both the error
code and the error word are reported for the dyndns.org service. Config
file support was added. Disabling it does not seem to decrease the size
of the binary. The Makefile was fixed; earlier when CFLAGS was specified

[014] - FinchTV 1.2.0
  by saragwyn (http://freshmeat.net/users/saragwyn/)
  Tue, Sep 21st 2004 14:22

Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization

About: FinchTV is a utility for viewing chromatogram files that
researchers use to easily view sequencing data with dynamic interactivity.
It supports both the .ab1 and .scf chromat file formats. It can display the
entire trace in a multi-pane view with or without the base sequence (A, C,
T, or G), the associated quality values, and the sequence positions. It
allows dynamic adjustment of the vertical scale to expand the heights of
peaks (allowing more detailed analysis), dynamic adjustment of the
horizontal scale (allowing visualization of extended or condensed
sequences), and display of the chromatogram trace as a single pane or in a
wrapped view. It allows the user to view additional chromatogram data
details when available, including the format, sample ID, plate label, run
start, run stop, spacing, mobility, lane number, number of lanes, and
more.

Changes: A Solaris build is now available with this release. The new
version provides full featured editing, allowing you to edit your base
calls, insert or delete bases, change a range of base calls to N's or X's,
or convert them to upper or lowercase. You can select and copy sequence
data for use in other applications, and save your edits to a new
chromatogram file for later use. The ability to search your sequence data
using regular expressions or simple base queries has been added.

  Tue, Sep 21st 2004 07:39

Scientific/Engineering

About: Gwyddion is a modular SPM (Scanning Probe Microsope) data
visualization and analysis tool. It can be used for all most frequently
used data processing operations including: leveling, false color plotting,
shading, filtering, denoising, data editing, integral transforms, grain
analysis, profile extraction, fractal analysis, and many more. The program
is primarily focused on SPM data analysis (e.g. data obtained from AFM,
STM, NSOM, and similar microscopes). However, it can also be used for
analyzing SEM (scaning electron microscopy) data or any other 2D data.

Changes: An OpenGL 3D data view (bringing a dependency on GtkGLExt),
document history with TMS-compatible previews, and fractal data
interpolation were added. Data display problems with recent Gtk+ versions
were fixed. Crashing in the Calibrate module was fixed. Data views no
longer completely redraw on partial exposes, improving responsiveness over
a network.

[027] - histbackup 2004-09-21
  by Cameron Simpson (http://freshmeat.net/users/cameron/)
  Tue, Sep 21st 2004 02:05

Desktop Environment :: Tools
System :: Archiving :: Backup
Utilities

About: histbackup makes incremental backups of a directory tree in a set
of directories named by dates, or date-time if the date already exists.
Its companion script histbackup-prune controls the archive growth. The
new backup is prepopulated by hardlinks of each file from the previous
backup and then updated with rsync(1). This arranges that the only new
content of each new backup is fresh copies of the changed files. In this
way each backup directory is a full copy of the source directory but the
disk space cost is that of an incremental backup. Because it uses rsync,
it is possible to efficiently backup remote directories in this manner.

[046] - MP3Gain 1.4.4 (Development)

  Tue, Sep 21st 2004 02:35

About: MP3Gain analyzes and adjusts mp3 files so that they have the same

Instead, it does some statistical analysis to determine how loud the file
actually sounds to the human ear. Also, the changes MP3Gain makes are
completely lossless. There is no quality lost in the change because the
program adjusts the mp3 file directly, without decoding and re-encoding.

  Tue, Sep 21st 2004 10:37

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: screen-scraper is a tool for extracting data from Web sites. It
consists of a proxy server that allows the contents of HTTP and HTTPS
requests to be viewed, and an engine that can be configured to extract
information from Web sites using special patterns and regular expressions.
It handes authentication, redirects, and cookies, and contains an embedded
scripting engine that allows extracted data to be manipulated, written out
to a file, or inserted into a database. It can be used with PHP, Java, or
any COM-friendly language such as Visual Basic or Active Server Pages.

Changes: Scraping sessions and scripts can now be "hot deployed" while the
app is running in server mode. SSL is now handled transparently in the
proxy server. Local files can be scraped. A search feature was added to
the "response" tab. DataSets can be automatically written to a delimited
file. Support for Basic, Digest, and NTLM Authentication was added.
Extensibility support was included for more easily adding custom code that
can be invoked in scripts. The proxy server can now be scripted.

  Tue, Sep 21st 2004 02:19

Database
Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: Serving XML provides a markup language for declaratively adapting
content to XML, transforming it through a chain of XSLT stylesheets and
SAX filters, and producing a stream of output to a local or remote
destination. The accompanying console app supports reading content as XML
files, flat files, SQL queries, or SAX events, and writing it as XML,
HTML, PDF, or mail attachments. This software is especially suitable for
converting flat files to XML, with its support for variant record types,
multi-valued fields, namespaces, hierarchical grouping of records,
row-by-row validation with XML Schema, and much more. There is also an
API for embedding the software in a Java application.

Changes: This release supports more general grouping of XML tags when

  Tue, Sep 21st 2004 04:02

Communications :: File Sharing
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Capture/Recording
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players :: MP3

About: streamripper records shoutcast-compatible streams. For shoutcast
style streams it finds the "meta data" or track separation data, and uses
that as a marker for where the track should be separated. For live365
streams it hits the Web site and finds when a track has changed. Either
way, the MP3 data will be decoded and scanned for a silent point which is
where tracks will be created.

Changes: This release uses the latest libmad, adds an option to rip to a
single file and to also rip streams even if they don't have an icy-name,
adds an authentication code, includes track splitting enhancements, adds
partial multibyte character support, fixes crashes on very long

[084] - SwingSet 0.8.2-beta
  by Brian E. Pangburn (http://freshmeat.net/users/Yoda2/)
  Tue, Sep 21st 2004 14:24

Database :: Front-Ends

About: SwingSet is a Java toolkit that allows the standard Java Swing
components to be made database-aware. The SwingSet feature set includes
database binding for text boxes, combo boxes, and checkboxes, masked
editing of text boxes, binding of a "hidden" numeric column for combo
boxes with text choices (e.g. 0, 1, and 2 are stored for "Yes," "No," and
"Maybe," respectively), population of combo boxes based on columns in a
database query (can also be used for combo box-based record navigation), a
graphical record navigator (allows for database traversal, insertion,
deletion, commit, and rollback), and a data grid component (with support
for spreadsheet cut & paste) for creating datasheet/spreadsheet/table
views of queries.

Changes: This release addresses some issues with the SSDataNavigator,
SSDBComboBox, and SSComboBox. These issues are primarily related to
tracking the "current" record number and keeping track of custom combo box
mappings. It is recommended that anyone using 0.8.1-beta upgrade

Desktop Environment :: Tools
Other/Nonlisted Topic
System :: Shells

About: viewglob is a tool to increase the usability of the Unix shell by
leveraging the expressiveness of graphical environments. It sits as a
layer beneath an xterm and watches your bash or zsh shell activity as you
type. A GTK+ display shows the layout of relevant directories and
highlights file selections and potential name completions.

Changes: The display can now be toggled on and off from the terminal.
There were also some bugfixes in command line tracking and display
resizing.

[091] - VisIt 1.3.5
  by Jeremy Meredith (http://freshmeat.net/users/meredith/)
  Tue, Sep 21st 2004 12:28

Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization

About: VisIt is an interactive parallel visualization and graphical
analysis tool for viewing scientific data. Users can quickly generate
visualizations from their data, animate them through time, manipulate
them, and save the resulting images for presentations. VisIt contains a
rich set of visualization features so that you can view your data in a
variety of ways. It can be used to visualize scalar and vector fields
defined on two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) structured and
unstructured meshes. It was designed to interactively handle very large
data set sizes in the terascale range, and works well down to small data
sets in the kilobyte range.

Changes: VisIt can now read data directly from a running simulation
(instead of from disk) for codes that use the included libvisitengine.
Operations on multi-domain problems can intelligently avoid creating ghost
zones and receive a big speed boost. Queries have been organized by type
and now also work on point meshes and histogram plots. VisIt can now pick
on all variables at once if you enter "all" for "secondary variables".
Support has been added for global zone and node numbers. Other
improvements include support for more file formats, improved usability and
performance, and dozens of bugfixes.

Internet
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization
Security

About: VisualRoute combines the tools traceroute, ping, and whois into an
easy-to-use graphical interface that analyzes Internet connections and
provides quick and essential data points for finding connectivity
problems. It identifies the geographical location of IP addresses and Web
servers -- highly valuable information for security purposes to help
identify network intruders and Internet abusers. It also provides email
tracking for troubleshooting email problems, and a ping grapher for
analyzing connectivity over time. The network service provider is
identified for each hop, and instant domain and network whois information
enable quick problem or abuse reporting.

Changes: German whois lookups now use the correct server, and there is a
new database.

  Tue, Sep 21st 2004 02:28

Desktop Environment :: File Managers
System :: Filesystems

About: xdiskusage is a user-friendly program to show you what is using up
all your disk space. It is based on the design of the "xdu" program
written by Phillip C. Dykstra. Changes have been made so it runs "du" for
you, and can display the free space left on the disk, and produce a
PostScript version of the display.

Changes: In this release, the Postscript output scales down very long
filenames so they fit. When compiled with fltk 2.0 the print dialog now
works.
