Games/Entertainment :: Turn Based Strategy

About: Chess Training Tools is a collection of chess training tools. It
includes a chess visualization trainer that teaches chess visualization by
drilling you on the color of a particular square, and also on your ability
to tell if two squares are the same color, if two (or three) squares are

squares are two knight moves apart. It includes a weak chess program
(called Vince) that lets you lag the display by several ply, hide all
pieces or all pawns, and block out quadrants of the board. Furthermore, it
includes an opening memorization trainer. The Palm & Pocket PC versions are
missing the mate, opening trainer, and Vince.

[009] - Conary 0.10.2

  Mon, Sep 27th 2004 13:45

Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup

About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather then having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.

Changes: The Conary repository codebase is now included. Large responses
from the server to the client are now compressed, for a significant
increase in speed. The "conary showchangeset" command now can provide more
information about changesets. Several small bugs were fixed.

  by Achim Westermann (http://freshmeat.net/users/achimwestermann/)
  Mon, Sep 27th 2004 03:39

Communications
Information Management
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

About: cpdetector is a small yet clever framework for codepage detection
that integrates different strategies. It may be used as a library for
third party software that accesses textual data over network. It also
includes a best-practice implementation in form of a command line tool
that allows sorting and transforming large collections of documents based
on their codepage. Available strategies include: jchardet (exclusion,
frequency analysis, and guessing), detection of the HTML charset property,
and detection of the XML encoding declaration.

Changes: The framework now additionally detects XML encoding declarations
in documents. This allows a speed up when handling mostly XML, as the
fallback to the jchardet guessing and exclusion is more expensive.

Software Development :: Documentation
Software Development :: Interpreters

About: Cpptools is a set of C/C++ development tools. This package contains
a C++ scanning class coded both in C++ and Python. CppFSMDoc.py is the
Finite State Machine diagrammer which uses FSM comment tags inside
sourcefiles. CppClassHierarchy.py parses C/C++ sourcefiles and generates a
graphical dependency tree using Graphviz, and CppColorize.py scans
sourcefiles and generates a highlighted HTML version.

Changes: This version was completely rewritten, and now correctly
identifies float numbers beginning with ".". A CppTokenizer.py script was
created which shows how the compiler's lexical analyzer breaks a program
into pieces (tokens).

About: DirSync is a directory synchronizer. It takes two arguments: the
source directory and the destination directory. It recursively makes the
two directories identical. It can be used to make an incremental copy of
large data. For example, if your file server is in the /data you can make
a copy in /backup with the command dirsync /data /backup. The first time,
all data will be copied, but when you issue the command again, only the
changed files are copied.

  by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
  Mon, Sep 27th 2004 16:41

Security
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: fwknop is a flexible port knocking implementation that is based
around iptables. Both shared knock sequences and encrypted knock sequences
are supported. In addition, fwknop makes use of passive OS fingerprinting
signatures derived from p0f to ensure the OS that initiates a knock
sequence conforms to a specific type. This makes it possible to allow,
say, only Linux systems to connect to your SSH daemon. Both the knock
sequences and OS fingerprinting are completely implemented around iptables
log messages, and so a separate packet capture library is not required.

Changes: An init script for Fedora systems has been added. --Kill,
--Restart, and --Status modes have been added (this fixes the generic init
script that depends on these arguments).

  Mon, Sep 27th 2004 00:21

Desktop Environment :: GNUstep
Software Development :: User Interfaces

About: Gorm (Graphic Object Relationship Modeller) is a GNUstep
application for building user interfaces and application objects
relationships. Its major features include drag-and-drop creation of GUI
elements from palettes, run-time loading of additional palettes, direct
on-screen manipulation of GUI elements, manipulation and examination of
objects via inspectors, and creation of connections between objects using
mouse. It is a clone of the former NeXTstep (currently OS X) "Interface
Builder" application.

Changes: This release featured full custom palette support, a palette
preferences panel for configuring the palettes to load, an experimental
standalone view for creating views without the need for a containing
window, an improved table column inspector, and improved layout for some

[029] - Gujin 0.9
  by Etienne (http://freshmeat.net/users/etiennelorrain/)
  Mon, Sep 27th 2004 06:24

System :: Boot :: Init

About: Gujin is a PC boot loader which can analyze your filesystems. It
finds the Linux kernel images available, as well as other bootable
partitions (for *BSD, MS-DOS, Windows, etc.), and displays a graphical
menu for selecting which system to boot. Because it understands the
structure of Linux kernel images, Gujin does not need LILO and can even
load very big kernels. There is no need to execute anything after making a
new kernel: just copy the kernel image file into the "/boot" directory.
Gujin is written almost entirely in C with GCC, and it fully executes in
real mode to be as compatible as possible.

Changes: Booting from CD or DVD is now supported with the ability to boot
from ATAPI devices and read ISO filesystems. Linux kernel 2.6.5 or later
may now be booted. The source may be compiled using GCC-3.4.2
bootstrapped, with binutils-2.15. Bugfixes were made.

About: NoMachine NX is a fast terminal server system based on the X11
protocol. In addition, NX also translates and embeds the MS Windows
Terminal Server and VNC protocols into X/NX. NX is an order of magnitude
faster than VNC or X11 on bandwidth as narrow as 10 kBit/sec. By embedding
RDP and RFB, it enables users to compress and accelerate remote Windows and
VNC sessions. NX lets you work fluently even across slow links like modems.
The NX project provides a suite of libraries and X11 proxying agents
implementing efficient compression and optimized transport of X11, SMB,
IPP, and arbitrary protocols like audio over the Internet.

Changes: The snapshot releases are only intended for development purposes.
The 1.4.0 version introduces two major features: support for local printers
and session persistence. Session persistence allows users to suspend the
X11 session and restart it, on the same or a different computer, at a
later time. This snapshot introduces fixes for sporadic session
reconnection failures and erroneous keyboard layout management. It also
sports various improvements in agent and cleaner error messages in
nxserver.

[056] - OpenCSG 1.0.1
  by Florian Kirsch (http://freshmeat.net/users/FlorianKirsch/)
  Mon, Sep 27th 2004 10:58

Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Rendering

About: OpenCSG is a library that does image-based CSG rendering using
OpenGL. CSG is short for "constructive solid geometry" and represents a
modeling technique for composing shapes with 3D-primitives which are
combined using volumetric boolean operations. Image-based CSG rendering
means rendering CSG shapes without calculating their surface in
object-space. Instead, the image of a CSG shape is composed directly in
the frame-buffer of the graphics hardware by rather sophisticated
stenciling and z- buffer operations.

Changes: For CSG rendering, the settings of the OpenGL scissor test are
now respected. When scissoring is used, this can lead to a substantial
performance gain.

[062] - PCP: Fast Cluster File Replication 0.3.3
  by Brent N. Chun (http://freshmeat.net/users/bnc/)
  Mon, Sep 27th 2004 05:53

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks

About: PCP is a system for replicating files on multiple nodes of a PC
cluster. Replication is done by building an n-ary tree of TCP sockets and
using parallelized, pipelined data transfers which use RSA authentication.
For large file transfers or replication on many nodes, PCP provides highly
efficient data transfers when compared to existing alternatives (e.g.
NFS).

Changes: This release includes small workarounds for bugs in LinuxThreads
to allow GEXEC to work with newer distributions of Linux, such as Red Hat
9.

Security
Utilities

About: Revelation is a password manager for the GNOME 2 desktop. It uses
multiple account types which can be organized in a hierarchy (using
folders) and stored in a secure, encrypted file. User-friendliness and HIG
compliance are important design goals, and most of the expected

account searching, and more. It can also import data from and export data
to foreign file formats like Figaro's Password Manager.

Changes: This release fixes a couple of bugs: a crash when editing an
entry on Python 2.2 systems, and the name for domain fields was
accidentally replaced with the field tooltip. There are also a couple of
minor UI improvements.

  Mon, Sep 27th 2004 03:36

System :: Archiving
System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Compression

About: Star is a very fast, POSIX-compliant tar archiver. It saves many
files together into a single tape or disk archive, and can restore
individual files from the archive. It includes command line interfaces for
the "tar", "Sun-Tar", "cpio", "pax", and "gnutar" command-line syntax. It
includes a FIFO for speed, a pattern matcher, multi-volume support, the
ability to archive sparse files and ACLs, the ability to archive extended
file flags, automatic archive format detection, automatic byte order
recognition, automatic archive compression/decompression, remote archives,
and special features that allow star to be used for full and incremental
backups. It includes the only known platform independent "rmt" server
program.

Changes: New man pages were included for smt, scpio, suntar, gnutar, and
spax. The man pages from scpio and spax are based on the IEEE/OpenGroups
Standard (with permission). Support for AMD-64 with the non
automake-aware GNU make was added. star -diff diffopts=data now also
detects different sizes. A bug with Linux xattr handling was fixed along
with a problem with scpio -p dir. Scpio block size handling was
corrected, and it now correctly supports the SVR4 -C option and defaults
to -Hodc.

About: sdelta is a dictionary compressor that analyzes the differences
between two files and outputs a very small delta that is highly
compressible. It is optimized to produce deltas of source tarballs. The
patches it produces are larger than xdelta patches, but are often
between 30% and 60% smaller after bzip2 compression.

Changes: Matching was honed to create smaller deltas when using a
dissimilar dictionary file. This change slightly increased the size of
sdelta patches where the dictionary file is a previously released version
of the same source. Overall performance is significantly better than
xdelta for source tarballs and even compressed binary files.

permitting retention of specific events, while eliminating false positives.
ZoneMinder supports both directly connected and network cameras and is
built around the definition of a set of individual 'zones' of varying
sensitivity and functionality for each camera. This allows the elimination
of regions which should be ignored or the definition of areas which will
alarm if various thresholds are exceeded in conjunction with other zones.
All management, control, and other functions are supported through the Web
interface.
