About: AudienceConnect is a revenue-generating Python CGI solution for
independent content providers. Requests for dynamic content or content
sets are routed through PayPal. Previews are generated as static HTML for
search engines to harvest. Demo site content is text for e-publishing, but
AudienceConnect can be easily extended to deliver other MIME types: sound
files, image files, etc.
Changes: AC_PublicStats was added to show readers what is being read. The
size limit of each type's upload is controlled by AC_types.txt. Works
under 1000 lines are previewed with half their lines. The AC_Static init
call has gone away because it is no longer necessary. Numerous
typographical corrections were made in the boiler plates.

[010] - BasKet 0.5.0-beta1 (Development)
by Sebien (http://freshmeat.net/users/Sebien/)
Tue, Sep 28th 2004 20:43
About: BasKet is a desktop organization tool inspired by DropDrawers (from
www.sigsoftware.com). It uses baskets and drawers for organizing various
objects, such as text, URLs, images, sounds, or other documents. Objects
in a basket can be edited, copied, moved, dragged, and so on. This allows
you to stay organized and free your desktop, or to take notes with various
types of content (not only text) in an easy way.
Changes: This version fixes a lot of usability issues from the
OpenUsability.org review, and fixes lot of bugs. The main feature is the
addition of file (and sound) item types so that files can be copied/moved
to baskets.

Communications :: Chat :: AOL Instant Messenger
About: centericq is a text mode menu- and window-driven IM interface that
supports the ICQ2000, Yahoo!, AIM, IRC, MSN, Gadu-Gadu, and Jabber
protocols. It allows you to send, receive, and forward messages, URLs,
SMSes (both through the ICQ server and email gateways supported by
Mirabilis), contacts, and email express messages, and it has many other
useful features. An internal RSS reader and a LiveJournal client are also
provided.
Changes: The MSN group management problem was fixed. The source no longer
fails to compile when the SSL library is not found during the build.
Jabber server messages no longer come from a nick that is similar to the
server name with an "

Text Processing
Text Processing :: Filters
Utilities
About: cz2cz tools is software for converting texts between various
charset encodings that are used in the Czech language. The most important
feature is autodetection of the most-used encodings (ISO-8859-2, Win-1250,
cp850, and Kamenickych). There are both console non-interactive
(text-based) and interactive (curses) applications. cz2cz also allows you
to convert characters with diacritics to TeX (LaTeX) conventions. The
interactive part of cz2cz tools can be used for quick manual complementing
of diacritics to texts.
Changes: In this version, a new feature autodetects line ends, and
results about it are written when using the -a option (write detected
coding of file + line ending). Configure options are upgraded before
compiling (so that it is possible to compile only some parts of cz2cz).
There are also some bugfixes.

[018] - ddrescue 0.6
by Antonio Diaz Diaz (http://freshmeat.net/users/ant_diaz/)
Tue, Sep 28th 2004 07:54
System :: Recovery Tools
About: ddrescue copies data from one file or block device (hard disk,
CD-ROM, etc) to another, trying hard to rescue data in case of read
errors. It does not truncate the output file if not asked to. So every
time you run it on the same output file, it tries to fill in the gaps. The
algorithm will: read the non-damaged part of the disk, skipping the damaged
areas; try to read the damaged areas, splitting them into smaller pieces
and reading the non- damaged pieces, until the hardware block size is
reached; try to read the damaged hardware blocks until the specified
number of retries is reached, or until interrupted by the user;
optionally, write a list of bad blocks to a file.
Changes: Skipping over damaged areas is now done more quickly. The error
messages have been improved.

Internet
System :: Archiving :: Mirroring
About: debian-multimirror is a tool that eases and automates the creation
and maintenance of custom Debian mirrors. It uses parallel programming to
exploit redundancy between mirrors and download from several mirrors at
the same time for best performance and less mirror load. A custom
algorithm is used to select a consistent set of packages, and out of
sync or even broken mirrors can still be used. SHA1 and MD5 package
information is used to assure data integrity. It uses an XML file for
configuration of the local mirror, and writes the correspondent "Package"
files after finishing mirroring.
Changes: This version adds a Configuration writer module, and a
package-tool function to easily include or exclude a list of packages.
There were also minor bugfixes and cosmetic changes.

About: Distributed BEAGLE is a master-slave distribution extension of the

robustness, fault tolerance, adaptability for heterogeneous networks, and
transparency for the user.
Changes: Restarting the server now gives the correct number of jobs still
needing to be crunched. The monitor now gives better information (demes
information, generations, jobs to do/total, etc.). Signal handling works
with the new threading model of Linux kernel 2.6.x (and backported to

Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence
System :: Hardware
About: The Distributed Hardware Evolution Project allows the distribution
of a genetic algorithm evolving hardware designs across the Internet by
setting up an island on each client's PC which will evolve during idle
time. Individuals from these islands will migrate between each other as
they compete for survival. All source code is available at Sourceforge
under the projects named JaGa, DistrIT, and IslandEv. The source code is
generalizable to any genetic algorithm or distributed processing task.
Changes: A new module in JaGa has been developed for the evolution of
Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) configurations. DHEP is evolving FPGA
configurations, which will increase the reliability of satellites and
rovers deployed in space. Statistics collection in the project now allows
the same username to be used for multiple islands. This allows people to
be members of a team but still collate statistics from several islands
under one username. Usability of the statistics interface has been greatly
improved.

About: JTB is a syntax tree builder to be used with the Java Compiler
Compiler (JavaCC) parser generator. It takes a plain JavaCC grammar file
as input and automatically generates a set of syntax tree classes based on
the productions in the grammar, utilizing the Visitor design pattern, two
interfaces, Visitor and GJVisitor, two depth-first visitors,
DepthFirstVisitor and GJDepthFirst, whose default methods simply visit
the children of the current node, and a JavaCC grammar jtb.out.jj with
the proper annotations to build the syntax tree during parsing. New
visitors, which subclass DepthFirstVisitor or GJDepthFirst, can override
the default methods and perform various operations on and manipulate the
generated syntax tree.

to remotely administer the file systems of multiple Unix machines. At its
core, radmind operates as a tripwire. It is able to detect changes to any
managed filesystem object, e.g. files, directories, links, etc. However,
radmind goes further than just integrity checking: once a change is
detected, radmind can optionally reverse the change. Each managed machine
may have its own loadset composed of multiple, layered overloads. This
allows, for example, the operating system to be described separately from
applications. Loadsets are stored on a remote server. By updating a
loadset on the server, changes can be pushed to managed machines.
Changes: This releases fixes some daemon stability issues, an lapply SUID
and GUID bug, and adds -% to lapply, lcksum, and lcreate. This is a
recommended upgrade for all users.

Utilities
About: Run provides a command line tool (run) and library service
(mpadvise) for controlling CPU biasing of processes along with other
per-process scheduler environment parameters (policy, priority, time
quantum, etc).
Changes: This release adds proper support for thread-specific operations.
Process-level operations now affect all threads in the process. The
mpadvise code now handles the three main /proc implementations. The build
has been migrated to use autoconf and automake. A source RPM is now
generated. Some bugfixes and tweaks were made.

[067] - s11n 0.9.15
by stephan beal (http://freshmeat.net/users/s11n/)
Tue, Sep 28th 2004 06:39
About: s11n ("serialization") is a C++ library for easily serializing a
wide variety of objects, including PODs, arbitrary streamable types, and
user-defined Serializable types. It is completely data-format agnostic and
currently supports 8 data formats, including three XML dialects and one
MySQL-powered back-end. Its author, with atypical hubris, truly believes
s11n to be the most advanced, most flexible, simplest-to-use, and utterly
most powerful serialization framework ever implemented in C++.
Changes: This release is primarily minor fixes and additions to the
supplemental libraries upon which s11n depends. Minor documentation
updates were made. A s11n::util::node_tree class was added, to aid client
apps which manipulate trees of data nodes.

[068] - schedtool 1.2
by Freek (http://freshmeat.net/users/thefreek/)
Tue, Sep 28th 2004 14:48
System
About: schedtool interfaces with the Linux CPU scheduler. It allows the
user to set and query the CPU-affinity and nice-levels of processes, as
well as all scheduling policies, like batch or real-time (RR/FIFO) classes
and their priorities.
Changes: An affinity-compiled schedtool should now also work on a
non-affinity capable kernel instead of simply refusing to query processes.

[069] - ShaniDomParser 0.3
by Quentin Anciaux (http://freshmeat.net/users/allcolor/)
Tue, Sep 28th 2004 02:59
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
Text Processing :: Markup
About: ShaniDomParser is an XML/HTML DOM parser that can be validating. It
is not based on an underlying SAX parser, and hence will never throw a
SaxException. It can parse badly formed XML files. It can parse files with
inverted tags and bad escaped &,< and >. It expands all HTML entities. It
is well suited to parse HTML files. It is up to 3 times faster than the
internal JDK 1.5 xerces parser and as fast as the internal JDK 1.4 Crimson
parser, compliant with the jaxp/w3c DOM interfaces, and very small.
Changes: The reading of Inputstream and Reader has been greatly improved.
A DTD parser was added but it is not currently used by the XML parser. An
HTML parser which implements 'org.w3c.dom.html.*' was added.

Communications :: Email :: Filters
Desktop Environment :: Gnome
About: Spam Trainer makes it easier for GNOME users to train spam
filtering software (e.g. Spambayes or SpamAssassin) that "learns" how to
tell the difference between real email (ham) and unsolicited messages
(spam). Not all email clients have spam filtering (and training) built
in, and training external filtering programs can be fiddly. Spam Trainer
provides easy (drag and drop) training from the Evolution mail client, and
should work just as well with any email client that supports the drag and
drop protocol implemented by the GTK+ toolkit.

Communications :: Ham Radio
About: The SvxLink project aim to develop a flexible general purpose voice
services system for ham radio use. The server consists of a core that
handles the connection to the tranciever. The transceiver audio is
connected to the PC through the sound card and the PTT is controlled by a
pin in the serial port. The voice services are loaded into the core as
modules. Examples of existing voice services are a help system, a module
that plays back everything you say, a module to connect to other EchoLink
stations. The project also includes an EchoLink client GUI application
(Qtel).
Changes: Most development effort has gone into the SvxLink server for this
release. In Qtel, there are only small changes and bugfixes. The biggest
news in the SvxLink server is the addition of EchoLink conferencing. That
is, multiple EchoLink stations are now able to connect to the same node.
Another new feature is the anti-flutter mode in the DTMF detector.

[081] - YajaLife 2.0 Beta
by linux (http://freshmeat.net/users/brainless/)
Tue, Sep 28th 2004 20:51
Games/Entertainment :: Simulation
Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence
About: YajaLife ("Yet another Java A-Life") is a cross-platform artificial
life/cellular automaton simulator game written in Java. It is inspired by
several principles and ideas used in the well-known a-life programs Tierra
and Avida. It is a world of resources (subroutines) and "bugs" (program
loops) that utilize the resources. The more capable a bug is at utilizing
the resources in the world, the more fit it is and the longer it has to
pass on its genes to the next generation.
Changes: This version fixes the formula used to calculate Standard Error
in various statistics parameters. It implements a new analyze function,
AVERAGE_MODULARITY, and adds three new events to modify the topology of a
population. It also adds the new functions "AnalyzeComplexity" and
"AnalyzePopComplexity" to analyze source code, and introduces changes to
arrays in analyze mode so that they use tArray and tMatrix to make them
easier to use with variable sizes.

[082] - ^txt2regex$ 0.8
by Aurélio Marinho Jargas (http://freshmeat.net/users/verde666/)
Tue, Sep 28th 2004 14:54
Software Development :: Code Generators
About: ^txt2regex$ is a Regular Expression "wizard", written with bash2
builtins, that converts human sentences to regular expressions. With a
simple interface, you just answer questions and build your own regexp for
a large variety of programs, such as awk, ed, emacs, grep, Perl, PHP,
procmail, Python, sed, and vim (there are more than 20 supported
programs). As it is written in bash, no compilation is required.
Changes: This release adds support for OpenOffice.org regexes, and new
translations for Romanian/Spanish/Italian languages. There is a new man
page, and the bash-3.x bug was fixed.
