[001] - aewm 1.2.4 (Stable)
by Decklin Foster (http://freshmeat.net/users/decklin/)
Sat, Oct 2nd 2004 11:22
Desktop Environment :: Window Managers
About: aewm is a minimalist window manager for X11. It has no nifty
features, but is light on resources and extremely simple in appearance. It
should eventually make a good reference implementation of the ICCCM. A few
separate programs are included to handle running programs, switching
between windows, etc.
Changes: Backslash quoting in rc files and zombie menu processes were
fixed.

[003] - ASPA 1.1
by Anakreon (http://freshmeat.net/users/anakreon/)
Sat, Oct 2nd 2004 07:18
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
About: ASPA attempts to automate the process of translating ASP pages into
PHP. The supported languages are JScript and VBScript.
Changes: This release adds support for VB classes and handles VB arrays
better. Information gathered from include files is now made available to
the main parser. The case statement of VB would accept only int or string
constants. Now, any expression which resolves to a value of the above
types is accepted. In the one-line syntax of the if statement of VB, only
expressions were allowed. Now, it accepts other statements as well.

[004] - ATutor 1.4.2
by Greg Gay (http://freshmeat.net/users/greggy/)
Sat, Oct 2nd 2004 07:31
About: ATutor is a standards-compliant Web-based Learning Content
Management System (LCMS) designed with accessibility and adaptability in
mind. Administrators can install or update ATutor in minutes and customize
it with their own look and feel. Educators can quickly retrieve repository
content, assemble, package, and redistribute their own content, and
conduct their courses online. Students learn in an adaptive learning
environment.
Changes: The Test Manager now includes a Likert question wizard for
creating surveys. Content can be secured outside the Web directory to
prevent unauthorized access. The search utility has been extended to
search all available courses and the course catalog. Themes can be
associated with course categories, to create a common look across related
courses. One-question polls can be created to quickly gather opinions. A
default language can be associated with a course. The source code
repository has been made available for checkout.

About: B-Forms is an easy to learn object-oriented PHP library for the
development of Web form-based applications. It supports tabular forms
with multiple records of the same type being edited simultaneously, and
provides security mechanism against data tampering.
Changes: The 1.1 release contains a number of goodies, such as automated
form layout generation, automatic detection of changes made by the user,
an improved saving procedure, and new property types. This is the second
and the last release candidate, so it is already pretty stable.

[006] - Beowulf 29cz-3
by imipak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imipak/)
Sat, Oct 2nd 2004 00:32
System
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux
About: Beowulf includes an enhanced Linux kernel, libraries, and utilities
specifically designed for clustering. Beowulf provides a single system
image through BProc, the Beowulf cluster process management kernel
enhancement. BProc makes the processes running on cluster "Computation
Node" computers visible and manageable on a front-end "Master Node".
Processes start on the front-end node and migrate to a cluster node.
Process parent-child relationships and UNIX job control are maintained
with migrated tasks. Cluster slave nodes are not required to contain
resident applications. Their hard disks are used for application data and
cache. This approach eliminates version skew common with previous
generation clusters.
Changes: Opteron support was added along with bugfixes and code cleanups.

[007] - Blob Wars: Metal Blob Solid 0.94
by Scarfy (http://freshmeat.net/users/Scarfy/)
Sat, Oct 2nd 2004 07:23
Games/Entertainment :: Arcade
About: Blob Wars: Metal Blob Solid is a 2D mission-based platform game.
Since their world was invaded by an alien race, the Blobs have faced a
lifetime of war. But now they have a chance to win the war once and for
all. In Episode I: Metal Blob Solid, you take on the role of a fearless
Blob agent, Bob. Bob's mission is to infiltrate the various enemy bases
around the Blobs' homeworld and rescue as many POWs as possible. But
standing in his way are many vicious enemies, other Blobs who have been
assimilated, and the evil alien leader, Galdov.
Changes: This release fixes some broken objectives, adds a Restart Level
option, adds more cutscene graphics, starts an update of the graphics
(including Blob animations), fixes final level saving (so the previous
level need not be replayed each time), fixes a "window losing focus" pause
bug, and fixes an "In game" menu bug.

[009] - Chess Training Tools 1.2.9
by dkappe (http://freshmeat.net/users/dkappe/)
Sat, Oct 2nd 2004 14:56
Games/Entertainment :: Turn Based Strategy
About: Chess Training Tools is a collection of chess training tools. It
includes a chess visualization trainer that teaches chess visualization by
drilling you on the color of a particular square, and also on your ability
to tell if two squares are the same color, if two (or three) squares are
on the same diagonal, if two squares are a knight move apart, or if two
squares are two knight moves apart. It includes a weak chess program
(called Vince) that lets you lag the display by several ply, hide all
pieces or all pawns, and block out quadrants of the board. Furthermore, it
includes an opening memorization trainer. The Palm & Pocket PC versions are
missing the mate, opening trainer, and Vince.
Changes: This release sees the addition of a larger opening book. While it
will make Vince a little stronger, it is really a bump up for the opening
trainer. Now you can choose which ECO codes you want to study. The
download is very large now, at over 5MB.

Text Processing :: Filters
About: DSPAM is a server-side statistical anti-spam agent for Unix email
servers. It masquerades as the email server's local delivery agent and
effectively filters spam using a combination of de-obfuscation techniques,
specialized algorithms, and statistical analysis. The result is an
administratively maintenance-free, self-learning anti-spam tool. DSPAM has
yielded real-world success rates beyond 99.9% accuracy with less than a
0.01% chance of false positives.
Changes: A central dspam.conf file has been created to house most of
DSPAM's configuration. libdspam has been made thread-safe. An attributes
API has been added. The original message encoding is now preserved when
used with header-based signatures. The libdspam API now allows open
database handles to be attached.

by Jdfr (http://freshmeat.net/users/Jdfr/)
Sat, Oct 2nd 2004 13:21
About: Herenow is a small utility based on the locate system. It combines
commands and file types. You don't have to input the file's path, and you
don't have to input the desired command. You give a keyword or full file
name, and it finds the file for you and executes the command specified in
the config file. In a file of configuration, you can specify the commands
according to the types of files. (ex: command editor ; type text)." Also,
hn can be recived command as argument.
Changes: A new option "-c", which allows the user to deactivate searching
in the "locate" database, was added. If the file to be treated is in the
working directory, it is useless to use the "locate" utility. This option
also allows the user to only take advantage of the association between
commands and types. The README and config files are now in English.

About: Jakarta Lucene is a high-performance, full-featured text search
engine library written entirely in Java. It is suitable for nearly any
application that requires full-text search, especially cross-platform.
Changes: A memory leak and a logical error that could lead to duplicate
results have been fixed in the sort code. Fuzzy searches now have a
configurable fuzziness. Search speed has been optimized for "OR" queries
that search for common terms.

[030] - jpegpixi 1.0.0
by Martin Dickopp (http://freshmeat.net/users/mdickopp/)
Sat, Oct 2nd 2004 12:43
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics Conversion
About: "Jpegpixi" is short for "JPEG pixel interpolator". It is a
command-line utility which interpolates pixels in JFIF images (commonly
refered to as "JPEG images"). This is useful to correct images from a
digital camera with CCD defects. Jpegpixi is unique in that it tries to
preserve the quality of the JFIF image as much as possible. Most graphics
programs decode JFIF images when they are loaded, and re-encode them when
they are saved, which results in an overall loss of quality. Jpegpixi, on
the other hand, does not decode and re-encode the image, but manipulates
the encoded image data, protecting the quality of the image as much as
possible.
Changes: Native language support has been provided. The package contains a
message catalog with German translations.

Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search
Multimedia
About: libextractor is a library used to extract meta-data from files of
arbitrary type. It is designed to use helper-libraries to perform the
actual extraction, and to be trivially extendable by linking against
external extractors for additional file types. The goal is to provide
developers of file-sharing networks, file managers, and WWW-indexing bots
with a universal library to obtain meta-data about files. libextractor
contains a shell-command "extract" that, similar to the well-known "file"
command, can extract meta-data from a file and print the results to
stdout. Currently, it supports the formats HTML, PDF, PS, OLE2 (doc, xls,
ppt), StarOffice, OpenOffice, DVI, MP3 (ID3v1, ID3v2), OGG, WAV, JPEG,
GIF, PNG, TIFF, RPM, ZIP, Real, QT, MPEG, RIFF (AVI), ASF, and ELF.
Various additional MIME types are detected. libextractor can also be used
to compute hash functions (SHA-1, MD5, ripemd160). A Java binding (JNI) is
available.
Changes: This release adds support for the DVI format. Plugins are now
stored in a separate directory.

[046] - nut 10.6
by Jim Jozwiak (http://freshmeat.net/users/jozwiak/)
Sat, Oct 2nd 2004 19:17
Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.
About: nut is nutrition software to record what you eat and analyze your
meals for nutrient composition. The database included is the USDA Nutrient
Database for Standard Reference, Release 17, which contains 6,839 foods and
128 nutrients. This database contains values for vitamins, minerals, fats,
calories, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, etc., and includes the essential
polyunsaturated fats, Omega-3 and Omega-6. Nutrient levels are expressed
as a percentage of the Daily Value, the familiar standard of food labeling
in the United States, but also can be fully customized. Foods can be added
from recipes or food labels, and nutrient intake can be graphed. The
program is completely menu-driven and there are no commands to learn.
Changes: This release fixes minor bugs related to the "Carb/Prot/Fat"
field. Values for alcoholic beverages have been corrected. Also, an error
was fixed that led to different fat values based on whether the user input
changes to the protein and carb "Daily Values" in percentages or grams. If
the two operations led to the same number of grams of protein and carbs,
there should have been no difference in the fat value.

by Quentin Anciaux (http://freshmeat.net/users/allcolor/)
Sat, Oct 2nd 2004 03:20
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
About: Yawda is an MVC Web development application framework based on
Struts. With it, you can easily output HTML, SVG, PNG, JPEG, PDF, RTF,
XML, JS, CSS (and any text file) with data from several sources. It uses
cayenne ORM (or another tool like jaxor, hibernates, or jdbc) and rhinoJS
or Java for the model, Struts for the controller, and Velocity/iText/Batik
for the view component.
Changes: A deadlock in the class loader's findClass method was corrected
along with a StackOverflowError in the findResources() method. The
padawan module now uses ShaniDomParser to validate user entry. A bug in
the CJavaModelConfig that prevented runtime compilation was fixed.
