[001] - Allegro 4.1.16 (Development)
  by Grzegorz Adam Hankiewicz (http://freshmeat.net/users/gradha/)
  Mon, Oct 4th 2004 23:53

Games/Entertainment
Multimedia :: Graphics
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Allegro is a multi-platform game library for C/C++ developers that
provides many functions for graphics, sounds, player input (keyboard,
mouse, and joystick), and timers. It also provides fixed and floating
point mathematical functions, 3D functions, file management functions,
compressed datafile, and a GUI.

Changes: This release fixes two problems with the keyboard driver on
Windows. It adds a set_allegro_resource_path() function, and hardware
cursor support to the X11 and DirectX window drivers. It fixes a crash
when initializing, deinitializing, and reinitializing Allegro on Windows.
There is a new MIDI input driver for the Windows port. The speed of
drawing primitives on X11 was improved and locking/unlocking for video
bitmaps was implemented. Bugs in set_palette() and remove_int() were
fixed, as was a bug where the X11 fullscreen driver would fail if no
virtual screen was reported. There are many other fixes to source,
examples, and documentation.

System :: Logging

About: epto is a small library and framework for industrial strength shell
script programming with sh. It features convenient error handling, tracing,
logging, option handling, documentation template, process level transaction
safety (sort of), and more. If one is used to shell programming, it takes
less than five minutes of learning to start using it (see the crash course
in the README file).

Changes: It is now poosible to tell epto scripts how long to wait for
cleanup after a timeout. See "-T" in a generated script. This means that
nested transactions are now fully supported. Concurrent transactions will
have to wait until a later release. Some bugs were fixed. Some cosmetic
changes were made to the documentation.

  Mon, Oct 4th 2004 07:07

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

About: HouseSpider is a Java applet that adds indexing and search
capability to Web sites. It can search by two methods: by spidering
through the site, or by searching a cached index file. Spider-searching is
slow, but very easy to set up and requires no maintenance. Cache-searching
requires only a little more attention to set up and is sometimes even
faster than CGI programs. HouseSpider also supports compression of the
index file and boolean searches. Translations for several languages are
provided, and it can handle Web sites in any language or encoding.

Changes: HouseSpider can now run as a stand-alone application (outside the

  Mon, Oct 4th 2004 08:26

Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: JayBird is JCA/JDBC driver suite for connecting to Firebird
database servers. It was based on Borland's InterClient JDBC driver and
uses the new JCA standard, which specifies an architecture in which an
application server can cooperate with a driver so that the application
server manages transactions, security, and resource pooling, and the
driver supplies only the connection functionality. It also supports JDBC.

Changes: This release features full JDBC 2.0 compatibility (by passing the
JDBC CTS 1.3.1 suite), new JDBC and X/Open specification features, and a
group of Firebird-specific interface features. The Type 2 driver support
now enables use of all of the supported Firebird client models. The JDBC
connection pool has been completely reimplemented, with multi-threaded

About: JBidwatcher is a powerful eBay-user tool implemented in Java. Its
features include tracking of auctions, bidding, sniping (automated bidding
in the last moments of an auction), and a unique multisniping feature that
allows you to snipe on a group of auctions, but stop the sniping as soon
as you win one. It also includes remote Web-based management,
XML-formatted save files, drag and drop support, some support for auction
sellers, and dozens of other useful auction features.

Changes: eBay's sudden change to require SSL login broke sniping and
bidding badly, requiring an emergency fix. The My eBay search wasn't
loading watched/bidding items properly, which has been fixed. A lot of UI
issues were cleaned up, and the UI made much more friendly. Behind the

[060] - Metapixel 0.11
  by Mark Probst (http://freshmeat.net/users/schani/)
  Mon, Oct 4th 2004 14:07

Multimedia :: Graphics

About: Metapixel is a program for generating photomosaics. It can generate
classical photomosaics, in which the source image is viewed as a matrix of
equally sized rectangles for each of which a matching image is substitued,
as well as collage-style photomosaics, in which rectangular parts of the
source image at arbitrary positions (i.e. not aligned to a matrix) are
substituted by matching images.

Changes: This release can take default values for its settings from a
configuration file in the user's home directory (".metapixelrc"). The
tables files must now always be in the directory where the small images
reside, and that directory is now called a "library". Several bugfixes.
Metapixel is now in feature-freeze for version 1.0.

[073] - OpenWFE 1.4.4
  by John Mettraux (http://freshmeat.net/users/jmettraux/)
  Mon, Oct 4th 2004 07:38

Information Management :: Workflow Frameworks

About: OpenWFE is a workflow engine. It is written in Java and is robust,
extensible, and scalable. An access library for Python is available,
making it easy to write custom interfaces or agents (automatic
participants) for a workflow-enabled system.

Changes: This version introduces variable substitution, an important new
feature in its process definition language. When used in the attribute
value of a tag, "${myvar}" is resolved to the content of the "myvar"
variable. Coupled to an iterator or a concurrent-iterator, it can simplify
definitions dramatically. The webclient and drolo are now avaible as WARs
to drop in your Tomcat webapps/ tree or whichever Java webapp server you
are using. Lots of small bugs were fixed, leading to a very innovating but
robust release.

  Mon, Oct 4th 2004 23:59

Scientific/Engineering :: Geographical
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization

About: Quantum GIS (QGIS) is a Geographic Information System (GIS) for
Linux/Unix. It will offer support for vector and raster formats. It
currently supports spatially enabled tables in PostgreSQL using PostGIS
and common GIS vector formats such as Shapefiles. Due to the complexity of
creating a feature-rich GIS application, support for various data stores
will be added in a phased approach. Ultimately, QGIS will be able to edit
shapefiles and display geo-referenced rasters (TIFF, PNG, and GEOTIFF),
create map output, and support database tables. A plugin feature to
dynamically add new functionality is planned.

Changes: This release includes a Windows version. Preliminary digitizing
support for shapefiles is included. The GRASS plugin now supports editing
of GRASS vector layers. A unique value renderer allows symbolizing
features based on the content of any attribute field. A layer definintion
query can now be specified when loading PostGIS layers. This release

[091] - Shared Crypto System 0.6
  by Bart Somers (http://freshmeat.net/users/zon4jou/)
  Mon, Oct 4th 2004 14:06

Communications :: File Sharing
Security :: Cryptography

About: Shared Crypto System gives the user option to effectively
transparently encrypt files on a shared network filesystem, without
directly knowing which communication partner will open the file, without
needing to share a keypair. It uses Blowfish encryption and one "key"
(the passphrase) to decrypt the files. This prevents the hassle of
sharing lots of keys and choosing which key to use. It also has an option
to recode using a new "key", if for some reason the old key is no longer
trusted.

Changes: This release adds options to work with wildcards, both in store
and recode. This makes it possible to batch-process your files. This
option does not work for decoding to prevent decoding too much at one
time. Checking for Vim backup files is also added. There are more strict
sanity checks on several files.

[099] - TeXfig 0.2
  by gebi (http://freshmeat.net/users/gebi/)
  Mon, Oct 4th 2004 09:42

Multimedia :: Graphics
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization
Text Processing :: Markup :: TeX/LaTeX

About: TeXfig is a small tool which uses LaTeX for setting the text in
xfig documents. This is useful for producing figures with complicated text
elements like formulas.

Changes: This release fixes some bugs, such that texfig can be called by a
different directory example: texfig ../file.fig. A -watch option has been
added that calls gv with the watch enabled. The options -ams and -amsmath
include amsmath and amssynb in the source latex file so that more
complicated math can be used. A -times option changes the fonts by using
the mathptmx, helv, and courier packages (just like the old but obsolete
times package does). There is a check to see if FILE is an empty string.
