[001] - abcm2ps 4.7.4 (Development)
by Guido Gonzato (http://freshmeat.net/users/goccia/)
Wed, Oct 6th 2004 11:48
Printing
About: abcm2ps is a package that converts music tunes from ABC format to
PostScript. Based on abc2ps version 1.2.5, it was developed mainly to
print baroque organ scores that have independant voices played on one or
more keyboards, and a pedal-board. It introduces many extensions to the
ABC language that make it suitable for classical music.
Changes: In addition to a few bugfixes, this release introduces the new
commands '%%dateformat', '%%stemheight', and '%%textoption'. Notes are
diplayed as tempo values in Q: fields changes, such as 'Q:1/4=3/8'.

by Afian (http://freshmeat.net/users/afian/)
Wed, Oct 6th 2004 04:47
Communications :: File Sharing
Information Management
Information Management :: Document Repositories
About: Afian is an elegant Web-based document manager. It is designed to
let non-technical people manage and share folders online from anywhere
with only a Web browser, bypassing the limitations of firewalls and e-mail
policies. It provides an easy-to-use interface for the existing files in
the file system, and it doesn't modify files and folders in any way. Users
can easily maintain their own private file repositories, and can choose to
make certain folders available over the Web to other users or to the
public. Afian has four different view modes, with larger or smaller icons.
Changes: Compatibility with Web hosting services has been improved. The
Web-based installation process has been simplified, and detection of
server types has been enhanced. The "publish folders to the Web" feature
has been removed to simplify the interface.

[003] - AudienceConnect 1.0.beta.13
by Richard Harris (http://freshmeat.net/users/goosequill/)
Wed, Oct 6th 2004 13:17
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
About: AudienceConnect is a revenue-generating Python CGI solution for
independent content providers. Requests for dynamic content or content
sets are routed through PayPal. Previews are generated as static HTML for
search engines to harvest. Demo site content is text for e-publishing, but
AudienceConnect can be easily extended to deliver other MIME types: sound
files, image files, etc. AudienceResponse and AudienceWatch are completely
independent and require only access to Python 1.5.2 in your cgi-bin.
Changes: The request log holds only today's and yesterday's requests.
Excess calls to Editor.__qfile have been eliminated. AudienceWatch calls
have been added to AC_remote.html and ac_remote.html.

About: cutmp3 is a small command line MP3 editor. It lets you select
sections of an MP3 interactively or via a timetable and save them to
separate files without quality loss. Silence and ID3 tag searching are
also possible. For playback it uses mpg123. The program works with VBR
files and files bigger than 2GB.
Changes: ID3 V1 and V2 tag importing, exporting, copying, and file naming
was greatly improved.

by Mario Viara (http://freshmeat.net/users/mviara/)
Wed, Oct 6th 2004 04:50
System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Mirroring
About: DirSync is a directory synchronizer. It takes two arguments: the
source directory and the destination directory. It recursively makes the
two directories identical. It can be used to make an incremental copy of
large data. For example, if your file server is in the /data you can make
a copy in /backup with the command dirsync /data /backup. The first time,
all data will be copied, but when you issue the command again, only the
changed files are copied.
Changes: This release improves performance on large directories entries
and adds new options.

Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: IMAP
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: POP3
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
About: Domain Technologie Control (DTC) is a Web-based control panel for
hosting that can delegate the task of creating subdomains, email, and FTP
accounts to users for the domain names they own. It has support for many
programs, including bind 8 and 9, MySQL, Apache, PHP 4, qmail, Postfix,
Courier, Dovecot, ProFTPD, Webalizer, and mod-log-sql. It can also
generate backup scripts, calculation scripts, and config files using a
single system UID/GID, and monitor all traffic accounting per user and per
service. It is fully skinnable and translated into several languages.
Changes: This version brings: a flag to show/hide passwords in the GUI,
htpasswd/.htaccess generation during install (which is also less verbose
and more secure [now using mktemp]), SASL for Postfix (SMTP with auth)
support, and 404 error and domain mismatch catching when there is no vhost
but the domain points to the server IP (before, it was taking the first
vhost in alpha order). The logs are now dumped chronologically, so
Webalizer runs better (a script is available on the project page to repair
your past logs and stats).

[025] - MIME Email message class 2004.10.05
by Manuel Lemos (http://freshmeat.net/users/mlemos/)
Wed, Oct 6th 2004 12:35
Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
About: The MIME Email message class composes and sends MIME encoded email
messages. It features user-definable headers and body parts, support for
plain text and HTML body, headers with non-ASCII text, HTML messages with
embedded images, file attachments with content type detection, forwarding
of messages as attachments, setting the error delivery address with the
Return-Path header, and sub-classes for different delivery methods: mail,
SMTP, Qmail, Sendmail, and Microsoft IIS or Exchange pickup folder. It
also supports sending personalized bulk mail by replacing the message
parts that differ for each recipient.
Changes: A function named SetBulkMail has been added to hint the class to
optimize its behavior to be more efficient during bulk deliveries like
newsletters and other types of mass mailing campaigns. For deliveries
using an SMTP sub-class, this means it reuses the same SMTP server
connection to deliver to all recipients, thus avoiding reconnection
overhead. For deliveries using a Sendmail sub-class, this means that it
uses the "queue only" mode to let bulk mail scripts run in less time. The
SMTP sub-class has now support for setting NTLM authentication credentials
for Windows domain and workstation names.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Editors
About: mpgedit is an MPEG 1 layer 1/2/3 (MP3), MPEG 2, and MPEG 2.5 audio
file editor that is capable of processing both Constant Bit Rate (CBR) and
Variable Bit Rate (VBR) encoded files. mpgedit can cut an input MPEG file
into one or more output files, as well as join one or more input MPEG
files into a single output file. Since no decoding or encoding occurs
during editing, there is no audio quality loss when editing with mpgedit.
mpgedit features command line, curses-based, and graphical interfaces. The
curses and graphical versions feature an interactive playback mode for fast
selection and verification of edit begin and end times.
Changes: This release enhances the behavior of the waveform editor by

by David Eder (http://freshmeat.net/users/pinhole/)
Wed, Oct 6th 2004 13:15
Internet
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
System :: Monitoring
About: phpSNMP is an implementation of SNMP in pure PHP as an alternate to
the UCDSNMP/NETSNMP extension. It returns MIB-independent data that should
be a uniform format across platforms, and should be more thread-safe than
the extension. It supports threadless parallel gets, walks, and sets for
extremely fast (compared to sequential) polling of an entire network.
Traps and bulk gets are supported.
Changes: This release adds a simple MIB compiler and support for
non-numeric OIDs. CPU load during polling loops has been reduced.

Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization
About: R is a language and environment for statistical computing and
graphics. It is similar to S, which was developed at Bell Laboratories by
John Chambers et al. It provides a wide variety of statistical and
graphical techniques (linear and nonlinear modelling, statistical tests,
time series analysis, classification, clustering, etc.). R is designed as
a true computer language with control-flow constructions for iteration and
alternation, and it allows users to add additional functionality by
defining new functions. For computationally intensive tasks, Fortran and C
code can be linked and called at run time.
Changes: Many things have changed since 1.0. The R language has acquired
namespaces, exception handling constructs, formal methods and classes,
much improved garbage collection, generalized I/O via connection objects,
and considerable improvements in the graphics area. The user workspace has
been reorganized, and so has the set of packages that ship with R. Several
"recommended packages" deemed indispensable in a statistical system are
bundled. In addition, there has been a large number of more specific new
functions, tweaks, and bugfixes.

[045] - The Nice programming language 0.9.9 (Development)
by Daniel Bonniot (http://freshmeat.net/users/bonniot/)
Wed, Oct 6th 2004 13:16
Software Development :: Compilers
About: Nice is a new object-oriented programming language based on Java.
It incorporates features from functional programming, and puts into
practice state-of-the-art results from academic research. Among the
advanced features: parametric types, anonymous functions, multi-methods,
tuples, optional parameters to methods, design by contract, detection of
many errors during compilation (in particular, concerning casts and null
references). This results in more expressivity, modularity, and type
safety.
Changes: This release introduces several type checking improvements.
Assertions about the type of variables are used by the typechecker, so
that casts are not necessary. There are new library methods for list
slicing (l[1..2]), indexing relative to the end, and filtering (l[test]).
Underscores are allowed and ignored in literal numbers, like in 'long x =
1_000_123_000_456;'. The nicedoc tool is also much more usable than
before.

Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Documentation
About: XML to DDL is a set of Python programs that converts an XML
representation of a database into a set of SQL or DDL (Data Definition
Language) commands. In addition, it can examine the difference between two
XML files and output a sequence of SQL statements (normally ALTER
statements) to bring one database up-to-date with the XML schema. You can
also download the XML schema directly from the database. Finally, there's
a tool to convert your schema into HTML for documentation purposes. XML to
DDL currently supports the most recent versions of PostgreSQL, MySQL, and
Firefox databases.
Changes: You can now download the schema from PostgreSQL, MySQL, and
Firefox. Autoincrement now does the right thing for each DBMS. Relation
constraints like "ON DELETE CASCADE" are now supported. The documentation
has been updated.

Text Processing :: Markup :: XSL/XSLT
About: XOM is an XML object model. It is a tree-based API for processing
XML with Java that simultaneously supports streaming. In many use-cases,
it can process arbitrarily large documents with effectively constant
memory sizes. It strives for correctness, simplicity, and performance, in
that order.
Changes: Improved support for Turkish locales. Special characters in the
internal DTD subset are escaped as necessary. The deprecated
setNodeFactory() method in XSLTransform has been removed. The toString
methods in Comment, ProcessingInstruction, Attribute, and Text now
truncate long output and escape any embedded line breaks and tabs as \n,
\r, and \t. SAXConverter no longer converts XOM xml:base attributes into
SAX attributes. Instead, the xml:base attributes are used to determine the
