[001] - AABrowse 0.0.7
by Grover (http://freshmeat.net/users/grover81/)
Sun, Oct 10th 2004 06:30
Games/Entertainment
About: AABrowse is a server browser for America's Army. It supports both
the Gamespy and Andromeda master servers, buddy lists, favourites, and
player search. It also optionally supports the GeoIP library, which allows
a country flag to be displayed for each server.
Changes: This update includes a few minor features and bugfixes. You can
now load and save sets of filters. The toolbars and menus have been given
a facelift. Querying servers should be faster and the pings should be more
accurrate. The way master server updates are done has also changed, so that
clicking the update button no longer deletes all your old servers, and
instead only adds new servers to the list.

Communications
Internet
Security
About: The Auditor security collection is a live-system based on KNOPPIX.
It provides tools for analyzing the security of a system. It features a
menu structure that reflects the stages of a security check:
foot-printing, analysis, scanning, wireless, brute-forcing, cracking. In
addition to about 300 security tools, the collection includes background
information regarding standard configuration and passwords, truly
extensive word lists, and more mundane productivity tools.
Changes: This version updates the boot and background graphics, and the
boot procedures. It adds boot parameters for skipping the keyboard
selection dialog. It disables the soundcard detection on default. The
size of the terminals of applications have been modified. A "Digital
forensics" section has been added, as has a "Honeypot" section. There are
massive changes in the wireless menu, new wireless tools for WEP cracking
and WPA bruteforcing. Many new tools were added and updated where needed.
Nessus plugins are now updatable using a memory stick.

[015] - Fast Logging Project for Snort 1.4.0
by DG (http://freshmeat.net/users/DirkGeschke/)
Sun, Oct 10th 2004 19:02
Communications :: Email
Database
Security
About: FLoP is designed to gather alerts with payload from distributed
snort sensors on a central server and to store them in a database
(PostgreSQL and MySQL are supported). On the sensor, the output is written
to a process called sockserv. This process is threaded; one thread receives
and buffers the alert packets, and the other thread forwards them to a
central server. The output is decoupled from snort, which can proceed in
sniffing instead of waiting for the output plugins. At the central server,
a process called servsock gathers all alerts from the remote sensors and
feeds them to the database. A short description of alerts with high
priority together with the database ID can be sent via email to a list of
recipients.
Changes: With a slight extension of the database, it is possible to
rebuild a stream of tagged packets with the program getpacket. rules.pl is
now able to work with rules without given priority/classification (this
happens mostly with some bleeding snort rules). A lot of minor bugs were
fixed. Some are essential for sensors with a small amount of RAM and
rebuilding large TCP packets within stream4. Log and error messages are
improved.

by mariuz (http://freshmeat.net/users/mariuz/)
Sun, Oct 10th 2004 13:30
Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: JayBird is JCA/JDBC driver suite for connecting to Firebird
database servers. It was based on Borland's InterClient JDBC driver and
uses the new JCA standard, which specifies an architecture in which an
application server can cooperate with a driver so that the application
server manages transactions, security, and resource pooling, and the
driver supplies only the connection functionality. It also supports JDBC.
Changes: It is now possible to specify both isc_dpb_lc_ctype and charSet
encodings. Previously, the driver used the default JVM encoding to convert
bytes into strings; now you can enforce the encoding you like and not
depend on the regional settings of the host OS. There should be no more
invalid statement handles, and result sets should be correctly released
when using the connection pool. The bug with "cannot start transaction,
local transaction active" is (hopefully) gone.

[021] - Keep It Secret! Keep It Safe! 0.12
by Tobias Buchloh (http://freshmeat.net/users/tbuchloh/)
Sun, Oct 10th 2004 06:24
Security
Security :: Cryptography
About: KisKis (Keep It Secret! Keep It Safe!) is an easy-to-use password
manager. It allows the user to manage passwords for many different
purposes, including network or Internet accounts, credit-card pin-numbers,
and password-secured files. The accounts can be grouped hierarchically
within a tree structure. Each account can be described by multiple
attributes (such as user name or URL), file attachments, and comments. The
history of each password change can be tracked. All passwords are stored in
a single XML file using OpenPGP messages.
Changes: A new cool and clear layout was added. Statistics which measure
how often accounts were viewed are gathered. The most recently viewed
accounts can be opened by shortcuts. The last selected tab-positions
within the account view will be remembered. User preferences can be
exported on program exit, which is important for USB sticks. The
OptionsDialog was refactored. The look and feel can be changed by
providing a new Look&Feel class name. A separate PIN can be assigned to
credit cards. Items can be renamed within the tree view by double-clicking
on them. Some bugfixes were made.

by Ben Martin (http://freshmeat.net/users/monkeyiq/)
Sun, Oct 10th 2004 08:42
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Filesystems
About: libferris is a virtual filesystem that exposes hierarchical data of
all kinds through a common C++ interface. Access to data is performed using
C++ IOStreams and Extended Attributes (EA) can be attached to each file or
directory to present metadata. Ferris uses a plugin API to read various
data sources and expose them as filesystems and to generate interesting
EA. Current implementations include native (kernel disk IO with event
updates using fam), XML (mount an XML file as a filesystem), DB4, xmldb,
LDAP, HTTP, FTP, eet, sockets, RDF/XML, RDF/bdb, and mbox. EA generators
include image, audio, and animation decoders.
Changes: The PostgreSQL eaindexing module now uses the libpqxx interface.
A single image object cache per process is used. A bug where not all
results would be returned for case insensitive odbc eaindex searches was
fixed. Changes were made to the meta eaindex code in order to speed up
additions to all eaindexes. Some eaindex and fulltext index modules are
now dynamically loaded instead of linked directly to libferris. The image
plugin interface was reworked to be more efficient.

System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: links2world Firewall is an iptables script generator for Linux
2.4.x or newer kernels. The configuration file is very human readable and
easy to understand and write. It does not matter if you have one, two,
three, or twenty network interfaces; it is able to generate stateful
iptables rule sets that control the packet flows between all the networks
your machine is attached to.
Changes: A bug in the default rule source/destination definition was
fixed. When the source or definition was not specified, the firewall used
the "anywhere" object by default. This forced the ruleset engine to use
the FORWARD iptables chain, thus denying access to the local machine when
you write rules like: 'accept "ssh" from "anywhere";'.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Object Brokering
About: MQS (Minimalist Queue Services) is a minimalist queueing system
that provides a set of basic methods in order to offer asynchronous
messaging for program/application. Applications can use this type of
services in order to store and retrieve messages to a dedicated queue in
the queue services. This allows you to avoid direct connection between
applications and provides a simple asynchronous communication system. It
provides a simple set of XML-RPC methods for pushing and getting messages
in a specific queue (so you can use the system with any application that
can talk XML-RPC). The queues are stored in a database (e.g., MySQL) or in
dedicated db files (e.g. QDBM).
Changes: Minor fixes were made in the documentation and the code. The MQS
URL definition was added in the documentation.

can be encrypted with a master-password or with a key-card (a.k.a.
chipcard or smartcard).
Changes: Entry of meta information was implemented. Some functions were
reimplemented to execute in O(1) time instead of O(n). In cases where O(1)
was not possible, the functions were made much faster. Flicker was heavily
reduced when updating listView. More crypto algorithms (libgcrypt) are
supported. The "dirty-status" of a document is displayed in the MainWindow

Communications :: Email :: Filters
About: renattach is a stream filter that can identify and act upon
potentially dangerous e-mail attachments. It's a highly effective way of
protecting users from harmful mail content (virii and worms) by disabling
or removing attachments that may be accidentally executed by the user. It
is written in pure C and can quickly process mail with little overhead.
Unlike a conventional virus scanner, there are no specific virus or worm
definitions. Instead, it identifies potentially dangerous attachments
based on filename extension and on encoded body content. It can be used
from within sendmail, postfix, procmail, or pretty much anywhere else.
Changes: The potentially insecure --pipe feature has been rewritten to
eliminate shell interpretation/escape risks. The RFC 2047 decoder has
been improved and a base64 decoding bug has been fixed, improving support
for non-ASCII filenames. Several improvements were made to help with
non-Unix builds and eliminate compiler warnings.

[045] - sudosh 1.0.0
by Doug Hanks (http://freshmeat.net/users/dhanks/)
Sun, Oct 10th 2004 00:27
System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring
System :: Operating System
About: sudosh is a filter that takes advantage of PTY devices in order to
sit between the user's keyboard and a program, in this case a shell. It
was designed specifically to be used in conjunction with sudo, and allows
the execution of a root shell with logging. Every command the user types
within the root shell is logged as well as the output. It also has the
ability to only log the user's keystrokes to syslog. The effect of this is
a root shell with per-command logging that is sent to syslog so it looks as
if sudo itself called the command.
Changes: This version was ported to C. It now only logs input (command
lines) to syslog, and logs input and output (same as the script) to
~/.sudosh_history.

by Dr. Java (http://freshmeat.net/users/drjava/)
Sun, Oct 10th 2004 00:24
Software Development :: Version Control
About: Superversion is a multi-user distributed version control system
based on change sets. A major focus in its development is efficiency and
ease-of-use. Features include a graphical user interface, branches,
conflict detection and resolution, a history tree view, export and report
functions, CVS-compatible keyword substitution, overridable file type
autodetection and a transactional internal database.
Changes: Synchronization is now much faster and truly atomic even over
unreliable connections. File type patterns can be imported and exported
as a text file. The history of marker movements can be inspected. Commits
typically require fewer mouse clicks. A number of small bugs have been
fixed; most notably, large files in the work area no longer cause an out

[047] - swbis 0.411
by Jim Lowe (http://freshmeat.net/users/jhlowe/)
Sun, Oct 10th 2004 00:23
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
About: Swbis aims to implement the POSIX packaging standard with useful
extensions. Working utilities include swpackage(8), swverify(8),
swcopy(8), and swinstall(8). GPG/PGP signing and verification of tar
archives is supported as well as an installed software catalog form that
allows direct use of gpg(1) for verification of the GPG signature in the
package database. swcopy and swinstall are network transparent by direct
use of SSH and support multiple SSH hops for easy access to hosts behind a
firewall. Neither has to be installed on the remote target host.
Changes: This release fixes extended option processing for swinstall and
swcopy. It also fixes various bugs in swpackage, the most notable being
an invalid owner/group name in the INFO file when certain extended
definitions were used. A texinfo manual in Info and HTML formats is now
included. Duplicate files are no longer allowed by swpackage.
