[001] - 2-Disk X window embedded Linux 1.2.13 binary (1disk)
  by mungkie (http://freshmeat.net/users/mungkie/)
  Tue, Oct 12th 2004 20:57

Desktop Environment
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Browsers

About: 2-Disk X window embedded Linux is a tiny net-centric Linux that
aims at portable secure remote system usage. It contains many utilities
including: X Windows, vncviewer, rdesktop, a Web browser, a file manager,
a text editor, a terminal, a window manager, a menu system, a dialog
system, X scripting facilities, and many others. It aims to work from 1 or
2 floppy disks in any remote location.

Changes: There are lots of updates in this release with the addition of a
paint application, a calculator, changes to video mode defaults, and many
minor script changes. There were also dependancy reductions, fixes for
bugs in desktop apps, and window manager enhancements in property change
handling. The kernel is now version 2.4.27.

[002] - Achievo ATK 5.0.5
  by Ivo Jansch (http://freshmeat.net/users/ivoibs/)
  Tue, Oct 12th 2004 10:33

Database :: API
Database :: Front-Ends
Information Management

About: Achievo ATK is an object oriented Web-application framework. It is
targeted at developers who wish to focus on business logic instead of
coding HTML. Where other application frameworks mainly provide a large set
of utility classes, ATK provides a complete framework that requires only
small amounts of code to get usable applications, while maintaining full
flexibility. In other words, even 10 lines of code get you a working
application, but everything that is generated for you can be completely
customized.

Changes: A generic CSV import feature was added so that all nodes can
import data. An atkFormatAttribute was added for entering formatted text.
Many bugs were fixed, and several API enhancements were added. A Slovak
translation was added, and the French, Italian, and Norwegian translations
were updated.

[003] - Ansel 2.1
  by Federico David Sacerdoti
(http://freshmeat.net/users/FedericoSacerdoti/)
  Tue, Oct 12th 2004 01:07

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation

About: Ansel is a picture gallery for web sites. It is a high quality,
information-rich photo gallery, designed to handle large numbers of images
and albums. It stores all its images in a database, making it both fast and
flexible. Ansel is similar in spirit to Shutterfly and Yahoo pictures, but
does not place restrictions on image size.

Changes: Safer defaults were included for album permissions, along with
various detailed interface refinements such as intelligent picture
ordering in large albums.

[004] - AudienceConnect 1.0.beta.17
  by Richard Harris (http://freshmeat.net/users/goosequill/)
  Tue, Oct 12th 2004 08:44

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: AudienceConnect is a revenue-generating Python CGI solution for
independent content providers. Requests for dynamic content or content
sets are routed through PayPal. Previews are generated as static HTML for
search engines to harvest. Demo site content is text for e-publishing, but
AudienceConnect can be easily extended to deliver other MIME types: sound
files, image files, etc. The related modules are completely independent
and require only access to Python 1.5.2 in your cgi-bin.

Changes: PublicStats was modified, and the WATCH_STATS const was added to
log stats views into AudienceWatch. AC_CONST was further annotated. A
type-detection bug in Editorial Queue was fixed.

[007] - Bash.Diff 1.6
  by William Park (http://freshmeat.net/users/opengeometry/)
  Tue, Oct 12th 2004 14:10

Database :: Front-Ends
System :: Shells

About: Bash.Diff is a patch against Bash that incorporates many useful
features from Awk, Python, Zsh, Ksh, and others. In the main core, it adds
the following: new brace expansion {a..b}, new parameter expansion
${var|...}, new command substitution $(=...), extended for, while, and
until loops, extended case statement, new try-block with integer
exception, and new here document <&lt+. As builtin commands, it adds the
following: sscanf(3), strcat(3), and strcpy(3) wrappers, a variety of
array and regex(3) operations, GDBM, SQLite, PostgreSQL, and MySQL
database interfaces, an HTML template engine (BASP), stack/queue
operations on positional parameters and arrays, Expat XML parser
interface, simple x-y character plot, DOS line support, and simple Awk
emulation.

Changes: Python-style [a:b] range is implemented in the parameter
expansion for string, and in the dynamic builtin for arrays and argument
lists. In general, the code has been cleaned up to make features more
consistent and orthogonal.

[008] - Basic Local Alignment Search Tool 2.2.9
  by imipak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imipak/)
  Tue, Oct 12th 2004 00:50

About: BLAST is a set of similarity search programs designed to explore
all of the available sequence databases regardless of whether the query is
protein or DNA. It uses a heuristic algorithm which seeks local as opposed
to global alignments, and is therefore able to detect relationships among
sequences which share only isolated regions of similarity. It can be run
locally as a full executable, and can be used to run BLAST searches
against private, local databases, or downloaded copies of the NCBI
databases. It runs on Mac OS, Win32, LINUX, Solaris, IBM AIX, SGI, Compaq
OSF, and HP- UX systems.

Changes: This release fixed memory leaks, NULL pointer handling,
uninitialized variables, database corruption, and Linux file-handling
bugs. Long search strings now work correctly. Major speedups were
achieved. The database is restricted to 1GB on 32-bit platforms.

[009] - BasicLinux 3.32
  by ichi (http://freshmeat.net/users/ichi/)
  Tue, Oct 12th 2004 00:52

System :: Operating System

About: BasicLinux is a mini-Linux distribution designed specifically for
old PCs. It provides a slim 2.2.16 kernel, a user-friendly shell and a
good assortment of utilities. It includes a Web browser, a comm program,
an email client, a telnet client, wget, DHCP, and dial-up PPP. It also
includes a small footprint GUI, and is able to run remote X (via network)
with as little as 4 MB RAM. BasicLinux is particularly suitable for old
laptops: it comes with PCMCIA capability and includes the MagicPoint
presentation program.

Changes: Major improvements were made to X. AbiWord, Sylpheed, and
Xfreecell now work. More space is available in the loop file.

About: bsc finds the Blackjack strategy through the Monte Carlo method. It
analyzes each situation with adaptive depth, and is generally optimized for
speed. The rules are hard coded for the author's local casino; adding
others or changing them is left for others to do. It seems to find the
correct strategy, but the house edge appears a bit wrong.

[011] - Bug-A-Boo 1.05
  by Thomas F (http://freshmeat.net/users/psypath/)
  Tue, Oct 12th 2004 01:45

Software Development :: Bug Tracking

About: Bug-A-Boo is a bug reporting and tracking system that runs on any
Web server that supports CGI. It helps you to keep an eye on bugs reported
to you by users of your software products. It can handle any number of
projects, users, and bug classifications, and is really flexible in their
setup. It features fast fulltext search, query storage, themes, and bug
watches. It uses the tdbengine as a database backend.

Changes: The program was internationalized and a German translation was
included. The administration functions were debugged and improved and the
overview now displays a small statistic showing all projects and the sums
of their bug reports statuses.

  by Bruce Merry (http://freshmeat.net/users/bmerry/)
  Tue, Oct 12th 2004 14:14

Multimedia :: Graphics
Software Development :: Debuggers
Software Development :: Libraries

About: BuGLe is a tool for debugging applications that use OpenGL. It
supports the validation of calls, breakpoints on calls or sets of calls,
examination and modification of state, logging of calls, and more.

Changes: This is a fairly major update to the internals, although not much
of it is visible to the user. The biggest changes are the ability to pass
options to the program that gldb will run, and a 'screenshot' command
within gldb to take screenshots on request. See the README for upgrade
instructions. Simply installing over an older version will break things.
You will also need to add the 'trace' filter-set to your existing
configuration files if you want the tracing functionality originally
provided by the 'log' filter-set.

  Tue, Oct 12th 2004 20:48

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Ripping

About: cdname.py names MP3 files and generates M3U playlists from
CDDB/freedb INF files. (These are often retrieved with cdda2wav -L). MP3s
and playlists can be named using any combination of artist name, track
title, album name, track number, etc. Many aspects are configurable via
command line options. It should complement most ripping/encoding
pipelines well.

Changes: This release adds the ability to generate M3U playlists. It also
fixes bugs when the delimiter contains invalid characters and when both
the -d and -l options are specified.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: Ruby Modules
Software Development :: Object Brokering

About: Copland is an Inversion of Control (Dependency Injection)
container for Ruby. It borrows architectural concepts from the HiveMind
Jakarta project, but implements them in significantly different ways.

Changes: Cycles in dependencies are now reported legibly when they result
in errors. Substitution symbols in configuration points work correctly
now. Services may be declared with either public or private visibility, to
restrict their visibility outside of their package. Log message formats are
now customizable, with formats similar to those offered by Log4j. A more
practical intro to Copland was added to the manual. The MagicPoint source
for the RubyConf 2004 presentation on Copland was added to the docs
subdirectory.

About: distcc is a parallel build system that distributes compilation of
C/C++/ObjC code across machines on a network. It can be set up in just a
few minutes and makes builds up to ten times faster. It does not require
machines to share a filesystem or have the same libraries or header files,
and installation does not need superuser privileges.

Changes: This release fixed a crash bug related to timeouts, a bug with
file timestamps, and various smaller problems. As a security feature, IP
access control is now mandatory for the server.

About: Duper is a GUI tool that scans directories for identical files,
allowing users to easily locate and delete duplicates wasting hard disk
space.

Changes: An (optional) persistent MD5 cache was implemented. An optimized
MD5 algorithm was incorporated. Regular expression file name exclusion
filters were added. Memory-mapped I/O is now optional, along with a more
aggressive garbage collecting policy. More efficient memory handling and
better data structures were added to make scanning large file sets much
faster. User preferences (such as exclusion filters and scan directories)
are stored persistently in an OS-specific way.

  Tue, Oct 12th 2004 09:27

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: Dwarf is a modular Java framework for developing network server
applications based on Internet standards. While focused on building
service-based applications like Web servers, mail servers, and messaging
services, it can also be used for other applications. The core consists of
several packages, which provide a multithreaded kernel, security based on
the standard Java 2 Platform Security architecture and the JAAS, logging,
configuration, and a management system. Modularity and a fine-grained API
allow one to extend the server, to reuse the existing services for a new
application, or even create new services based on the existing ones.

Changes: A static client and a dynamic service for simple DNS lookups was
added. Transparent dumping of the network stream content to file was
added. Support for IP-based and hostname-based filtering of network hosts
was added. The service tree is traversable in a way similar to using the
"cd" command on a filesystem.

[027] - Easysoft ODBC-Oracle Driver 2.1
  by John Kos (http://freshmeat.net/users/JohnKos/)
  Tue, Oct 12th 2004 03:48

About: The Easysoft ODBC-Oracle Driver provides ODBC access to Oracle for
Linux and major Unix platforms. The driver supports Oracle 8.1.6 or
higher, Oracle 9i, and Oracle 10g. It supports the latest SQL syntax and
additional datatypes provided in Oracle 10g, as well as Oracle RAC and
grid computing. It uses Instant Client and provides full OS
authentication. It is easy to install and configure, and is compatible
with unixODBC Driver Manager.

Changes: This version added major performance improvements and new
optimization options that will benefit all users. Oracle statement caching
and support for serialised transactions, session pooling, OCI connection
pooling, and static cursors are now fully supported. New no-threading and
no-parse options that can further improve performance under specific
circumstances were added. Several minor bugs were resolved.

Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
Internet
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: This is a PHP class that attempts to validate a given e-mail
address at three levels: matching the address against a RFC compliant
regular expression, verifing the existence of the destination SMTP server
by verifying the respective DNS MX record, and connecting to that server
to see if the given address is accepted as a valid recipient. The class
also features a debugging output option that lets you see the remote SMTP
server connection and data exchange dialog to see the real cause why an
apparently valid address may not be accepting messages.

Changes: The class now uses the Perl-compatible regular expression
functions to accelerate the validation of many email addresses in the
same script execution.

the script with a name parameter, allowing for desktop shortcuts which give
single click "check-in/out" links. Custom and/or default comments can be
added to their status. No database system is required, you just need a Web
server and Perl. A script to check all staff out is also provided, which is
handy if called as an overnight cron job. It uses the Date::EzDate Perl
module.

Internet :: Log Analysis

About: Stager is a system for aggregating and presenting network
statistics. Though tailored for using NetFlow data from the flow-tools
package, it is generic and can be customized to present and process any
kind of network statistics. The backend collects data with flow-tools
and stores reports in a database, automatically handling the aggregation
of hourly statistics into days, weeks, and months. The Web frontend
presents data in tables, matrices, or plots. The reports are fully
customizable, and their definitions are stored in the database.

Changes: This release included great performance improvements for
plotting, support for report aliases, new UI navigation, interface
improvements, support for Internet Explorer, and 100% frontend CSS and
XHTML conformance. Bugfixes were made to plotting, documentation, the

[082] - Wi.Ser Beta 0.5.0

  Tue, Oct 12th 2004 01:46

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Wi.Ser is a Java/XML server-side GUI-framework which enables an
application to run as either a monolithic Swing app, a client/server Swing
app, or as a Web app without any change. It includes a mixed deployment
mode, which supports one server to serve Swing clients and Web clients at
the same time. The framework uses XML to define an application's GUI. It
provides a common widget-based, object-oriented programming interface for
Web and Swing GUIs, which prevents the developer from struggling with HTML
and HTTP or with the internals of Swing. For Swing client/server
applications the client/server split as well as the client/server
communication is handled transparently by the framework. The project
includes a GUI builder that is based on the framework's functionality
(screenshot, deployed as a Web/HTML application).

Changes: This release included support for internationalization and an
example. The creation of WebWidgets is now up to three times faster and
the framework uses template caching. The startup of Swing applications is
now 15% faster and the memory consumption was reduced by 20%.
