by Jules Colding (http://freshmeat.net/users/colding/)
Wed, Oct 13th 2004 07:49
Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Address Book
Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
About: Brutus is an Exchange connector and development framework that
offers access to all of MAPI and therefore to all versions of Microsoft
Exchange from version 5.5 onwards. It is a complete wrapping of all of
MAPI into a (large) set of CORBA interfaces. It enables any groupware
client to integrate seamlessly into any organization with large Exchange
deployments on an equal footing with MS Outlook. Being based on CORBA, it
is platform independent, and works equally well on Linux, the BSDs,
Windows, or wherever there is a CORBA implementation available.
Changes: The sample code now demonstrates how to add an advise sink, so
that the client application is informed about events on the Exchange
server. A few bugs has been fixed as well.

Wed, Oct 13th 2004 03:45
Software Development :: Embedded Systems
System :: Boot :: Init
About: BusyBox combines tiny versions of many common UNIX utilities into a
single small executable. It provides minimalist replacements for most of
the utilities you usually find in GNU fileutils, shellutils, etc. The
utilities in BusyBox generally have fewer options than their full-featured
GNU cousins; however, the options that are included provide the expected
functionality and behave very much like their GNU counterparts. BusyBox
provides a fairly complete POSIX environment for any small or embedded
system.

[008] - C->Haskell 0.13.2
by Chilli (http://freshmeat.net/users/ChilliX/)
Wed, Oct 13th 2004 06:37
Software Development :: Code Generators
About: C->Haskell is an interface generator that simplifies the
development of Haskell bindings to C libraries. The tool processes
existing C header files that determine data layout and function signatures
on the C side in conjunction with Haskell modules that specify Haskell-side
type signatures and marshaling details. Hooks embedded in the Haskell code
signal access to C structures and functions; they are expanded by the
interfacing tool in dependence on information from the corresponding C
header file.
Changes: This version generates binding code which complies with version
1.0 of the Haskell FFI Addendum. It can handle C function bodies in header
files. The target directory for generated files is now selected in a
consistent manner. A major space leak was fixed. A couple of minor
bugfixes were made.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
About: Elektra (formerly Linux Registry) provides a universal and secure

pair mechanism, instead of each program using its own text configuration
files. This allows any program to read and save its configuration with a
consistent API, and allows them to be aware of other applications'
configurations, permitting easy application integration. While
architecturally similar to other OS registries, Elektra does not have most
of the problems found in those implementations.

About: Folding
home simulates protein folding. We do not entirely
understand how proteins actually operate, but one important step is to
study how proteins self-assemble or "fold." This is an extremely
computationally intensive task since proteins take in the order of
microseconds to milliseconds to fold, yet we can only routinely simulate
over nanosecond to microsecond time scales. This system provides a new way
to simulate protein folding that can break the millisecond barrier by
dividing the work between multiple processors. Thus, with 1000 processors,
we can break the millisecond barrier and help unlock the mystery of how
proteins fold.
Changes: This release added more features and more science.

[035] - Hermes JMS Browser 1.7RC2
by Colin Crist (http://freshmeat.net/users/colincrist/)
Wed, Oct 13th 2004 21:06
System :: Networking
About: Hermes JMS Browser is a Java/Swing application for interacting
with and monitoring queues/topics. In addition to normal JMS
functionality, it supports plugins for gaining access to provider
administrative functionality. This could be used to efficiently query
queue depths. It is especially useful when dealing with a very mixed
environment of messaging providers and need a single tool to interact and
monitor them all.
Changes: A JNDI browser was added, letting you browse and then create
sessions from the ConnectionFactory instances bound. The administration
plugin has been extended for WebSphereMQ, JBossMQ, WebLogicMQ, ArjunaMQ,
and ObjectWeb JORAM. Regular expressions may be used to search for
messages on queues. Queues and topics may be discovered automatically from
supported providers. Queue and topic statistics are now displayed for
supported providers. A built-in renderer for FIX messages was added.
Messages may now be displayed in hexadecimal.

About: HTML Forms generation and validation is a PHP class that generates
HTML forms supporting keyboard navigation, has many built-in validation
types on server and client sides, prevents security attacks by discarding
spoofed values, has multiple submit protection, outputs HTML for fields
displayed as fully accessible or in read-only mode, has field value
filtering based on regular expressions, and has automatic capitalization
of field text. It can be extended with custom input control plug-in
classes. A calendar date plug-in control is available.The form output can
be defined with templates using HTML with embedded PHP or the Smarty
template engine.
Changes: The super-globals values are now checked first to retrieve the
submitted form values, so the class can work correctly with the PHP
register_globals option Off. The placement of read-only labels and inputs
was fixed. The order of evaluation of the different types of validation
performed by the Validate function was documented.

[063] - Rhizome Wiki 0.4.1
by adam souzis (http://freshmeat.net/users/aszs/)
Wed, Oct 13th 2004 13:20
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
About: Rhizome is a Wiki-like content management and delivery system that
exposes the entire site including content, structure, and metadata as
editable RDF. This means that instead of creating a site with URLs that
correspond to a page of HTML, you can create URLs that represent just
about anything. It was designed to enable non-technical users to create
these representations in an easy, ad-hoc manner. For developers, this
allows both content and structure to be easily repurposed and complex Web
applications to be rapidly developed.
Changes: Rhizome gains full-text indexing, browsing and grouping by
keyword, summary views, better support for RDF/XML, diffing of revisions,
and several usability enhancements. Raccoon has several improvements to
performance, security, and error handling. RxML and ZML have been made
more user-friendly with simpler syntax and better documentation. RxPath
adds support for RDFLib. There is better support for non-ASCII content
throughout all sub-systems.

About: Rx4RDF is a set of technologies designed to make W3C's RDF less
complex and easier to use. It includes RxPath, which enables one to use
familar XML technologies like XPath, XSLT, and XUpdate to query,
transform and update an RDF model, Raccoon, an application server that
uses an RDF model for its data store and RxPath to translate arbitrary
requests to RDF resources, and ZML and RxML, alternative text formats for
XML and RDF that were designed to allow novices to write XML and RDF with
(nearly) the same ease as a Wiki entry.
Changes: Rhizome gains full-text indexing, browsing and grouping by
keyword, summary views, better support for RDF/XML, diffing of revisions,

[065] - SCMxx 0.7.4
by Hendrik Sattler (http://freshmeat.net/users/hsattler/)
Wed, Oct 13th 2004 08:30
Communications :: Telephony
About: SCMxx is a console program that allows you to exchange certain
types of data with mobile phones made by Siemens. Some of the data types
that can be exchanged are logos, ring tones, vCalendars, vCards, phonebook
entries, and SMS messages. It works with the following phones: S25, C35i,
M35i, S35i, ME45, S45, SL45, M50, and probably some others, too. It
basically uses the AT command set published by Siemens (with some other
additional resources).
Changes: There is now support for configuration files (.scmxx/config in
the home directory) and support for gettext. There is a complete German
translation and a partially complete Russian translation. Locks can now be
toggled, and current lock status can be displayed. To dial a number from
the computer phonebook, there is a new option --dial that behaves the same
as if you pressed the buttons on the phone itself.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Pre-processors
About: Stunnix Perl-Obfus is a unique solution for protecting your
valuable intellectual property from possible Perl source code
piracy/studying/rework. It's an advanced and extremely reliable obfuscator
for the Perl source code. It converts the Perl source files (.pl and .pm)
into highly mangled and obfuscated forms, making them extremely difficult
to study, analyse, reuse, or re-work for competitors or customers, while
fully retaining functionality of the original source code. It's not a
compiler to machine code, and the obfuscated form will still be the usual
Perl source code, and so will work on all platforms the original source
worked on.

[070] - sudosh 1.1.0
by Doug Hanks (http://freshmeat.net/users/dhanks/)
Wed, Oct 13th 2004 01:05
System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring
System :: Operating System
About: sudosh is a filter that takes advantage of PTY devices in order to
sit between the user's keyboard and a program, in this case a shell. It
was designed specifically to be used in conjunction with sudo, and allows
the execution of a root shell with logging. Every command the user types
within the root shell is logged as well as the output. It also has the
ability to only log the user's keystrokes to syslog. The effect of this is
a root shell with per-command logging that is sent to syslog so it looks as
if sudo itself called the command.
Changes: This release corrects a keystroke bug in sudosh.c, and corrects
the BS and DEL characters so that syslog is understandable when the user
issues BS or DEL keys. ^H^H^H was too ugly. This version also adds
support for AIX (removing MALLOC and REALLOC in configure.in), support
for ~/.sudosh_input for the keystrokes, and a "DD/ MM/YYYY HH:MM:SS LLL"
format for ~/.sudosh_input.

[071] - sysstat 5.1.1
by Sébastien Godard (http://freshmeat.net/users/godard/)
Wed, Oct 13th 2004 15:10
System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration
About: The sysstat package contains the sar, mpstat, and iostat commands
for Linux. The sar command collects and reports system activity
information. This information can also be saved in a system activity file
for future inspection. The iostat command reports CPU statistics and I/O
statistics for tty devices and disks. The statistics reported by sar
concern I/O transfer rates, paging activity, process-related activites,
interrupts, network activity, memory and swap space utilization, CPU
utilization, kernel activities, and TTY statistics, among others. Both UP
and SMP machines are fully supported.
Changes: sar now reads CPU data, number of context switches, number of
sectors, and total number of interrupts as 64-bit unsigned values. It also
reads the number of running processes as unsigned long instead of unsigned
int. sadf, a system activity data formatter command, has been added. The
options -h and -H have been removed from sar. "sar -h" is replaced by
"sadf -p", and "sar -H" is replaced by "sadf -d". A minor buffer overrun
has been fixed in iostat. A sadf manual page has been added.

Internet
Software Development :: Libraries
About: WvStreams is a library set composed of a number of parts. Among
them are WvIPStreams (WvTCPStream and WvUDPStream), WvStrings (yet another
C++ String class), WvCrypto Streams (including an easy way to add SSL
support to applications), WvConf (a configuration file handler), WvLog
(nice, simple handling of log files), and a whole host of other goodness.
These are the base classes used to build programs such as the ever popular
WvDial, TunnelVision, FastForward, KWvDial, and retchmail.
Changes: This release uses pkg-config for libraries and compiles with GCC
3.4. UniConf is much more complete and stable with the addition of many
new generators, backends, and monikers. The UniConf Daemon does
authentication and was ported to Windows. WvSSLStream now does certificate
validation. The UnitTesting framework has been updated to more completely
test the entire library. A base library, libwvbase, was created. This
means that WvStreams programs using the most common parts of the API will
link against only one shared library. There were many bugfixes.
