Fri, Oct 15th 2004 04:07
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About:
Mail is a fully-featured WebMail server, allowing users to send
and receive email via a Web browser or WAP device. It has full support for
IMAP/POP3 mailboxes, and an optional email-server mode that uses Exim as
the MTA. Features include a scheduler, MySQL backend support, spell-check,
addressbook, user preferences, multiple accounts, Spamassassin support,
migration scripts from other mail servers, a customizable interface, an
attractive DHTML interface, an optional group Calendar/Addressbook, an
Outlook 2000/2003 plugin to sync Contacts/Tasks/Calendar data between a
desktop client and Webmail.
Changes: This version adds various changes to the WebMail interface and
the server backend. It includes new translations (Danish, Hungarian, and
Norwegian), improves the Webmail interface support for OS X browsers,
adds updates to support popup-blockers, improves the LDAP address book
search, optimizes the Javascript functions, updates the Outlook to
WebMail sync utility for Calendar, Tasks, and Contacts, improves IMAP
folder support, and includes many minor bugfixes.

Internet
About: aKregator is a KDE RSS aggregator. It supports the best known
metaphors from existing aggregators. It also facilitates good integration
with KDE by maintaining an interface similar to Konqueror and KMail.
Changes: In this version, the archive size can be limited now so that one
can either set the maximum of articles to keep or expire articles whose
age exceeds a certain limit. Keyboard behavior is now similar to KMail's.
The article viewer can be scrolled via Up/Down, move in the feed list via
Alt+Cursors, etc. Some bugs regarding switching views and update were
fixed. Also, rendering a feed with many articles should be a lot faster
now.

Communications :: BBS
About: alph implements and analyzes historical and traditional ciphers and
codes, such as polyalphabetic, susbstitutional, and mixed employing
human-reconstructable algorithms. It provides a pipe filter interface in
order to encrypt and decrypt block text to acheive transparency. The
program is meant to be used in conjunction with external programs that
transfer data, resulting in transparent encryption or decryption of
information. The program can thus be used as a mail filter, IRC filter, IM
filter, and so on.
Changes: ENIGMA has been added, featuring rotors, reflectors, and ring
settings. A smasher function has been added instead of the normal analysis
method. A few libraries have been merged for convenience, and the main API
now consists of libalphCRYPT. The static build restriction has been
removed, and serious documentation has been added to the manpage. Several
other enhancements include corrections to already-included cyphers.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
About: AudienceConnect is a revenue-generating Python CGI solution for
independent content providers. Requests for dynamic content are routed
through PayPal. Previews of that content are generated as static HTML for
search engines to harvest. Self-publishers can upload and publish
remotely, or the editorial CGI can be used to view and publish
submissions. Demo site content is plain text, but AudienceConnect can be
extended to deliver any digital content: sound files, image files, etc.
Installation is very simple; no database technologies are used. The
related modules are completely independent and require only access to
Python 1.5.2 in your cgi-bin.
Changes: This release has a CONTENT_MAX constant to prevent oversized
submissions.

Multimedia :: Video :: Non-Linear Editor
About: Avidemux is a graphical tool to edit video. It can open AVI,
openDML, MPEG, Nuppelvideo, and BMPs. Most common codecs are supported
(M-JPEG, MPEG, DivX, Xvid, huffyuv, WMA, etc.) thanks to libavcodec and
libmpeg2. Video can be edited, cut, appended, filtered
(resize/crop/denoise), and re-encoded to either AVI (DivX/Xvid) or MPEG
1/2.
Changes: The audio chain has been partially rebuilt to handle VBR audio
properly. That led to MP3 VBR, AAC, and vorbis encoding. A lot of
endianness/alignment issues have been fixed to make it work properly on
PPC and Mac OS X. Ogm is better handled (reading and writing). Subtitle
support has been enhanced (shadow, kerning, and hinting), and it now
accepts UTF-8 subtitles.

Security
About: Generic Security Service (GSS) is an implementation of the Generic
Security Service API (GSSAPI). It is used by network applications to
provide security services, such as authenticating SMTP/IMAP, via the
GSSAPI SASL mechanism. It consists of a library and a manual, and a
Kerberos 5 mechanism that supports mutual authentication and the DES and
3DES ciphers.
Changes: gss_import_name and gss_duplicate_name no longer clone the OID,
to avoid memory leaks. This release fixes handling of sequence numbers in
gss_accept_sec_context for servers, a crash in gss_accept_sec_context for

About: GNU Libidn is an implementation of the Stringprep, Punycode, and
IDNA specifications defined by the IETF Internationalized Domain Names
(IDN) working group. It is used to prepare internationalized strings (such
as domain name labels, usernames, and passwords) in order to increase the
likelihood that string input and string comparison work in ways that make
sense for typical users throughout the world. The library contains a
generic Stringprep implementation that does Unicode 3.2 NFKC
normalization, mapping and prohibition of characters, and bidirectional
character handling. Profiles for iSCSI, Kerberos 5, Nameprep, SASL, and
XMPP are included. Punycode and ASCII Compatible Encoding (ACE) via IDNA

[029] - jpegpixi 1.0.3
by Martin Dickopp (http://freshmeat.net/users/mdickopp/)
Fri, Oct 15th 2004 11:37
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics Conversion
About: "Jpegpixi" is short for "JPEG pixel interpolator". It is a
command-line utility which interpolates pixels in JFIF images (commonly
refered to as "JPEG images"). This is useful to correct images from a
digital camera with CCD defects. Jpegpixi is unique in that it tries to
preserve the quality of the JFIF image as much as possible. Most graphics
programs decode JFIF images when they are loaded, and re-encode them when
they are saved, which results in an overall loss of quality. Jpegpixi, on
the other hand, does not decode and re-encode the image, but manipulates
the encoded image data, protecting the quality of the image as much as
possible.
Changes: French translations of the manual pages and the message catalog
have been included in the package.

[035] - LogiLogi.org Make 0.2.0
by Wybo Wiersma (http://freshmeat.net/users/wybow/)
Fri, Oct 15th 2004 07:37
Software Development :: Build Tools
About: LogiLogi.org Make is yet another make replacement, but one that
allows you to create your makefile in C++. A header and footer are added
to it, and it's then compiled using your C++ compiler. Afther that it's
run, and that's the point where your other sources are being compiled.
Thanks to the lakeUsr extension library (which is included), many
(possibly complex) compile commands can be given with one simple function
call. The lakeUsr library features compilation of source trees,
compilation of static libraries, installation of libraries and headers,
and cleaning. LogiLogi.org Make was inspired by Icmake.

[038] - MIB Smithy SDK 3.1b1 (Development)
by Muonics (http://freshmeat.net/users/muonics/)
Fri, Oct 15th 2004 14:07
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Libraries :: Tcl Extensions
About: MIB Smithy SDK is a dynamic extension to Tcl/Tk (8.1+) that allows
development of custom scripts for controlling SNMP agents, manipulating
SMI definitions, doing conversions, and more. It is based on the core of
Muonics' MIB Smithy, and the SDK supports SMIv1 and SMIv2, as well as
SNMPv1/v2c/v3 with HMAC-SHA-96 and HMAC-MD5-96 authentication and CBC-DES
privacy. It also provides complete read-write access to all elements of
SMI/MIB Module definitions, unlike similar extensions that provide only
read access to a limited subset. The SDK allows multiple discrete SMI
databases and SNMP sessions, and provides all of the built-in validation
and error recovery capabilites of the full product, without the visual MIB
development environment.
Changes: Support for Mac OS X was added. New memory management in the MIB
parser and database requires less memory and fewer allocations/copies,
which improved MIB loading speed by 15 - 20%. Other optimizations were
made. Support for Scotty's nmtrapd/straps trap daemons was added so that
traps can be received on port 162 without requiring root access, and a
replacement that is compatible with both is provided. Some compiler
messages were clarified and redundant ones removed.

Terminals :: Terminal Emulators/X Terminals
About: ROTE is a simple C library for VT102 terminal emulation. It allows
the programmer to set up virtual 'screens' and send them data. The virtual
screens will emulate the behavior of a VT102 terminal, interpreting escape
sequences, control characters and such. The library supports ncurses as
well so that you may render the virtual screen to the real screen when
you need to.

[062] - Ryan's In/Out Board 2.0-5
by Crimperman (http://freshmeat.net/users/crimperman/)
Fri, Oct 15th 2004 11:48
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Office/Business
About: Ryan's In/Out Board (formerly known as Whosin) is a simple and
quick Perl-driven Web-based in/out board for use on intranets and
extranets. Users can change their status by clicking their name or calling
the script with a name parameter, allowing for desktop shortcuts which give
single click "check-in/out" links. Custom and/or default comments can be
added to their status. No database system is required, you just need a Web
server and Perl. A script to check all staff out is also provided, which is
handy if called as an overnight cron job. It uses the Date::EzDate Perl
module.
Changes: Bugfixes to search and the main script to facilitate personalized
header files.

[063] - Simplebackup 1.4.0 RC1 (Release Candidates)
by Miguel Angelo (http://freshmeat.net/users/miguelangelo/)
Fri, Oct 15th 2004 16:59
System :: Archiving :: Backup
About: Simplebackup builds simple backups of directories. It reads a
configuration file, one per backup directory, then builds a compressed
file from the directory and places it in another directory. The target
directory can be a network-mapped drive in Windows, an NFS-mounted drive
in Unix, another hard disk, or an FTP server.
Changes: A performance increase in incremental and differential modes
(windows). Support for tape backups (Unix only). Code to log the size of
the current backup and of all backups. An option to allow rejecting files
by filename. Two new options that allow debugging of the mail/FTP
conections. Better control over weird characters in the conf file. A
compatibility problem with some external commands (Oracle exp/imp), an
obscure bug in FTP backups, and a bug in the mail reporting have been
fixed. Previous configuration files remain 100% compatible.

by Smilehouse (http://freshmeat.net/users/smilehouse/)
Fri, Oct 15th 2004 08:21
Information Management
Internet
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: Smilehouse Workspace is a Java based e-commerce application for
product, order, and customer information management. It can be used for
building and managing product catalogs, online stores, Webshops, and
b-to-b extranets. It currently runs on Tomcat and has two Web-based
interfaces. The first is a themed interface visible to the public, and the
second is a separate administration interface for managing both the
appearance and content of the published service (users and customers,
product information and related files, order information).
Changes: This release adds improved customer registration, including
functionality for sending forgotten passwords to registered customers. The
new Direct Link feature enables making easy and stable HTML links to
individual products and product groups from outside. Workspace's HTML
template tag system has also been improved, and tag naming has been
unified. A WYSIWYG HTML editor has been embedded in the product group
editor.

Communications :: Email :: Filters
About: SpamProbe is a spam detection program that uses a Bayesian analysis
of the frequencies of terms used in the email. Because it filters email
based on content rather than on general rules, it easily adapts itself to
the types of email that each individual user normally receives.
Changes: This release adds exec and exec-shared commands to allow
manipulation of the database using external programs. Other improvements
include a compilation option to force big-endian data storage, Debian
compatibility fixes, and minor bugfixes.

Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
About: The Freiburg project is an infrastructure to replace shared
libraries with a client/server interface. This system converts a shared
library into a "service" using Unix or inet domain sockets for
communication. The "service" will be usable by any programming language
without additional C programming requirements. An application is a
composition of multiple services using an event-based message bus for
communication. A service can reside locally or remotely using the "client"
or the inetd super-server for startup.

[069] - Transcend Game 0.2-IGF-2
by Jason Rohrer (http://freshmeat.net/users/jcr13/)
Fri, Oct 15th 2004 08:11
Games/Entertainment :: Arcade
Multimedia :: Graphics
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Sound Synthesis
About: Transcend can best be described as retro-style, abstract, 2D
shooter. The graphics are geometrical, and the pace is sometimes
frenzied. Two features set Transcend apart from other games. First, its
dynamic graphical engine, which can smoothly morph from one complex shape
to another in realtime, produces striking displays. Combining these
dynamic shapes with subtle randomizations ensures that each new play
through a level is visually different from the last. The second novel
feature is the musical power-up system. As you play through a level, you
are simultaneously assembling an abstract visual collage and arranging a
unique piece of music.
Changes: This release includes a new level (for a total of three). A
portal now appears after the major anti-glyph has been destroyed; you can
explore the Elements in a level without enemies before moving on to the
next level. Zoom effects have been added to level transitions. Strafe keys
have been added per popular request.

[070] - TreeLine 0.10.0
by Doug Bell (http://freshmeat.net/users/Doug101/)
Fri, Oct 15th 2004 08:49
Other/Nonlisted Topic
About: TreeLine is used to organize and store text data in a tree
structure. It is well suited to keeping track of many different types of
information. Each node of the tree can contain several defined fields,
forming a mini-database. The format of each node can be defined, and the
output can be shown on the screen, printed, or exported to HTML. The tree
structure is navigated and edited in the left pane of the window, while
various views of the child data are shown and editable in the right pane.
The data is stored in XML text files. TreeLine is based on the PyQt
library.
Changes: New internal link fields can now be clicked to select nodes with
matching reference text; keywords can link different areas of the tree. An
initial field data value can be specified for new nodes. File encryption is
available to password protect TreeLine files. An interface to plugin
extension modules now allows coders to add custom functionality. Tree and
edit view fonts can now be changed. Printing page breaks now avoids
separating a parent from its first child node. Unicode handling has been
improved. Bugs have been fixed, including some file-info field dialog
issues and view state consistency problems.

[076] - Zinc 3.3
by mertz (http://freshmeat.net/users/mertz/)
Fri, Oct 15th 2004 14:09
About: Zinc is a Tk widget developed with Perl/Tk, Tcl/Tk and Python/Tk
bindings. Zinc widgets are very similar to Tk canvases in that they
support structured graphics. Graphical items can be manipulated, and
bindings can be associated with them to implement interaction behaviors.
But unlike the canvas, zinc can structure the items in a hierarchy, and
has support for affine 2D transforms. Clipping can be set for sub-trees of
the item hierarchy and the item set is quite more powerful, including
field-specific items for Air Traffic systems. Zinc is fast enough to allow
the implementation of 2k2k radar displays with smooth animations. It is
structured enough to allow the implementation of direct manipulation
desktop GUIs.
Changes: Installation on Linux and Windows should be more straightforward,
for both Perl/Tk and Tcl/Tk. There are many bugfixes.
