[001] - 3rd Edition Dungeons & Dragons Character Generator 2.4
  by Slicer (http://freshmeat.net/users/slicer/)
  Sun, Oct 17th 2004 13:31

Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing

About: 3rd Edition Dungeons and Dragons Character Generator is an
HTML/JavaScript Web page that allows the user to quickly and easily create
new Dungeons and Dragons characters. The characters can be of any of the
eleven classes, any of the playable races, and may start at any level from
1 to 220. Generation requires some simple input, after which the character
is displayed on a basic character sheet. It allows you to select your
starting stats, add ability points, and pick skills, equipment, feats, and
spells. It runs on most operating systems with most modern browsers.

Changes: This release allows the user to save/load characters for later
use. Once a character has been finished, the character's data can be
saved, then reloaded for editing or reprinting.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: AudienceConnect is a revenue-generating Python CGI solution for
independent content providers. Requests for dynamic content are routed
through PayPal. Previews of that content are generated as static HTML for
search engines to harvest. Self-publishers can upload and publish
remotely, or the editorial CGI can be used to view and publish
submissions. Demo site content is plain text, but AudienceConnect can be
extended to deliver any digital content: sound files, image files, etc.
Installation is very simple; no database technologies are used. The
related modules are completely independent and require only access to
Python 1.5.2 in your cgi-bin.

Changes: Writing of the author's Paypal account file has been made more
secure. Editor file management and other functions are split between admin
access and normal editors' access.

[009] - bash programmable completion 20041017 (Stable)
  by Ian Macdonald (http://freshmeat.net/users/ianmacd/)
  Sun, Oct 17th 2004 03:50

System :: Shells
System :: Systems Administration
Utilities

About: Since v2.04, bash has allowed you to intelligently program and
extend its standard completion behavior to achieve complex command lines
with just a few keystrokes. Imagine typing ssh [Tab] and being able to
complete on hosts from your ~/.ssh/known_hosts files. Or typing man 3 str
[Tab] and getting a list of all string handling functions in the UNIX
manual. mount system: [Tab] would complete on all exported file-systems
from the host called system, while make [Tab] would complete on all
targets in Makefile. This project was conceived to produce programmable
completion routines for the most common Linux/UNIX commands, reducing the
amount of typing sysadmins and programmers need to do on a daily basis.

Changes: This version fixes scp completion for file names, both local and
remote, that contain shell metacharacters. gzip has been fixed for files
whose names contain spaces. apt-cache improvements have been made.
Targets in included Makefiles are now processed during make completion.
New dhclient, lvm, and bittorrent (contrib) completions have been added.
CVS completion has been fixed to allow better handling of files and
directories whose names contain whitespace. Many other minor fixes have
been made.

  by CA (http://freshmeat.net/users/CA/)
  Sun, Oct 17th 2004 23:24

Communications :: Email :: Filters
Text Processing :: Filters

About: Bogofilter is a Bayesian spam filter. In its normal mode of
operation, it takes an email message or other text on standard input, does
a statistical check against lists of "good" and "bad" words, and returns a
status code indicating whether or not the message is spam. Bogofilter is
designed with fast algorithms (including Berkeley DB system), coded
directly in C, and tuned for speed, so it can be used for production by
sites that process a lot of mail.

Changes: This version revises the "-QQ" output so it can be used
(unchanged) in a config file, and removes an obsolete "-- with-db" option
from configure.ac.

[015] - Clam AntiVirus 0.80
  by Luca Gibelli (http://freshmeat.net/users/nervous/)
  Sun, Oct 17th 2004 13:39

Communications :: Email :: Filters
Security
Utilities

About: Clam AntiVirus is an anti-virus toolkit for Unix. The main purpose
of this software is the integration with mail servers (attachment
scanning). The package provides a flexible and scalable multi-threaded
daemon, a commandline scanner, and a tool for automatic updating via
Internet. The programs are based on a shared library distributed with the
Clam AntiVirus package, which you can use in your own software.

Changes: This release introduces many new features. The most important one
is the new scan engine with support for 3 algorithms: a multipattern
variation of a Boyer-Moore algorithm for static signatures, an extended
Aho-Corasick algorithm with support for simple regular expressions, and
POSIX compatible regular expression automata which will be used to scan
some specific places with complex signatures. A new very lightweight
version verification method (using TXT records) was added to freshclam.
It's now possible to discover when a new database has been released with a
single UDP packet.

[017] - DRBL 1.2-10drbl (Testing)
  by Steven (http://freshmeat.net/users/stevenshiau/)
  Sun, Oct 17th 2004 03:53

About: Diskless Remote Boot in Linux (DRBL) provides a diskless or
systemless environment for client machines. It works on Debian, Mandrake,
Red Hat, and Fedora. Unlike LTSP, it uses distributed hardware resources
and makes it possible for clients to fully access local hardware. It also
includes Clonezilla, a partitioning and disk cloning utility similar to
Symantec Ghost.

Changes: This version uses "rsync -a -u" to update files for clients, so
that it's not necessary to reboot clients when running "drblpush -i". The
sshd and other auth mechanisms still work without rebooting.

  Sun, Oct 17th 2004 23:35

Database :: Front-Ends
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Compilers

About: Eleven is a programming language for creating robust, scalable Web
applications. Eleven reduces code size by roughly 20 to 1 over traditional
server programming languages like PHP, ASP, and mod_perl. From high-level
source code with a C-like syntax, the Eleven compiler generates
database-backed Web applications that are fault-tolerant, offer a high
level of data security, and can be scaled through replication. The
compiler produces complete mod_perl programs that run under the Apache Web
server, so no special runtime support is required.

Changes: This release contains an important bugfix, enabling the table
editor and navigation bar functions to work under Internet Explorer. (The
fix uses Javascript to work around problems in IE's implementation of the
HTML BUTTON tag.) Also included are various other minor bugfixes and page
layout improvements.

[020] - Enblend 2.0
  by Andrew Mihal (http://freshmeat.net/users/mihal/)
  Sun, Oct 17th 2004 23:20

Multimedia :: Graphics

About: Enblend is a postprocessing tool for creating panoramic images.
After you align image features using a program like Hugin, there are often
photometric problems that lead to ugly seams in the final composite.
Enblend blends away these seams using a multiresolution spline. This
technique gives good results on both low spatial frequency objects (sky
and clouds) and high spatial frequency objects (trees and houses).

Changes: This release features support for 8-bit, 16-bit, 32-bit, single-
and double-precision floating point images, gigapixel-sized images, the
CIE L*a*b* color space, and more. Banding artifacts in the sky have been
fixed, and there is a sophisticated memory/disk balancing system to
improve performance on smaller images.

[021] - fakeroot 1.1.5
  by CA (http://freshmeat.net/users/CA/)
  Sun, Oct 17th 2004 23:25

Software Development

About: Fakeroot runs a command in an environment were it appears to have
root privileges for file manipulation, by setting LD_PRELOAD to a library
with alternative versions of getuid(), stat(), etc. This is useful for
allowing users to create archives (tar, ar, .deb .rpm etc.) with files in
them with root permissions/ownership. Without fakeroot one would have to
have root privileges to create the constituent files of the archives with
the correct permissions and ownership, and then pack them up, or one would
have to construct the archives directly, without using the archiver.

Changes: This version includes fixes for --key.

About: Java Fortune Teller is a Java version of the famous fortune game
from BSD.

Changes: Array lists are used again but they are used more effeciently
this time around. jfortune now assigns probability to each file, gets a
random number, checks that number against the probabilities assigned, and
prints a quote. This way, larger files will have a higher probability for
having a quote printed from them. You can tell it to consider all files
equally when printing out a quote. The output mechanism is more modular
now with one method being sent all the output. This method knows if the
output is to be returned as a string or is to be printed out on the
console.

  by Christian Grothoff (http://freshmeat.net/users/grothoff/)
  Sun, Oct 17th 2004 23:22

Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search
Multimedia

About: libextractor is a library used to extract meta-data from files of
arbitrary type. It is designed to use helper-libraries to perform the
actual extraction, and to be trivially extendable by linking against
external extractors for additional file types. The goal is to provide
developers of file-sharing networks, file managers, and WWW-indexing bots
with a universal library to obtain meta-data about files. libextractor
contains a shell-command "extract" that, similar to the well-known "file"
command, can extract meta-data from a file and print the results to
stdout. Currently, it supports the formats HTML, PDF, PS, OLE2 (doc, xls,
ppt), StarOffice, OpenOffice, MAN, DVI, MP3 (ID3v1, ID3v2), OGG, WAV,
JPEG, GIF, PNG, TIFF, DEB, RPM, TAR(.GZ), ZIP, Real, QT, MPEG, RIFF (AVI),
ASF, and ELF. Various additional MIME types are detected. libextractor can
also be used to compute hash functions (SHA-1, MD5, ripemd160). A Java
binding (JNI) is available.

Changes: This release adds support for man pages, tar and tar.gz
archives, and deb packages. The dimensions for JPEG images are now
extracted. Support for 64-bit files was added. Some minor bugs in the
extractors for JPEG and ID3 2 were fixed.

About: mod-xslt is an Apache module that converts XML files into HTML
files using XSLT stylesheets. It was written to overcome most of the
limits of similar modules and uses a standard API, which could easily be
used for other applications or to support more servers. It is able to
parse dynamically generated documents, both in POST and GET requests,
includes a fully featured language to choose the stylesheet to load from
both configuration files and from .xml files, and allows stylesheets to
access server variables. It supports redirects, dynamically generated
stylesheets, and both Apache 1 and 2.

Changes: This version corrects some bugs in handling the Content- Encoding
and Content-Length headers, while providing a new XSLTAddRule parameter
both for the Apache 1.3.x and Apache 2.0.x SAPI. An overall cleanup of
the code has started, and usage of libxml and libxslt API has been

About: Motiontrack is a set of tools that detects motion between two
images. It is able to successfully distinguish random flicker from real
object movement by applying a set of filters to the images, and can
optionally ignore given colors and/or image regions. The roadmap provides
for being able to identify objects by pattern detection and AI routines.
Currently, this part is able to turn line-art images into ASCII-art text
as a fun/demo feature.

Changes: Motiontrack can now auto-normalize and auto-align to be compared

  Sun, Oct 17th 2004 07:29

System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: MultiTail lets you view one or multiple files like the original
tail program. The difference is that it creates multiple windows on your
console (with ncurses). Merging of 2 or more log files is possible. It can
also use colors while displaying the log files (through regular
expressions) for faster recognition of what is important. It can also
filter lines (again with regular expressions). It has interactive menus
for editing given regular expressions and deleting and adding windows. One
can also have windows with the output of shell scripts and other software.
When viewing the output of external software, MultiTail can mimic the
functionality of tools like 'watch'.

Changes: The stable version 3.2.3 was merged with development version
3.3.8. Context sensitive help was added (press F1 or ^H at any time). The
terminal resize code was fixed. One can now have a description instead of
a filename in the status lines. One can now monitor filepatterns (if a
file's modification date is more current than the current file, multitail
will start monitoring that one). Multiple compilation fixes were made, so
it should compile on CygWin and Mac OS X again. One can now specify a
configuration file explicitly.

About: OpenSSH Heartbeat/Watchdog Patch adds a heartbeat (keepalive)
function to ssh(1). If the output channel has been silent for more than a
specified time, a null message (SSH_MSG_IGNORE) is sent to the server as a
heartbeat. The heartbeat is useful for keeping connections over IP
masquerade/NAT boxes, firewalls, etc. This patch also adds a watchdog

watchdog timeout is very useful for detecting a link which is down over
unreliable connections such as a wireless network.

  Sun, Oct 17th 2004 23:19

Software Development
Utilities

About: PStreams allows you to run another program from your C++
application and to transfer data between the two programs, similar to
shell pipelines. In the simplest case, a PStreams class is like a C++
wrapper for the POSIX.2 functions popen(3) and pclose(3), using C++
IOStreams instead of C's stdio library. The library provides class
templates in the style of the standard IOStreams that can be used with any
standard-conforming C++ compiler on a POSIX platform. The classes use a

Communications :: Email :: Filters
Desktop Environment :: Gnome

About: Spam Trainer makes it easier for GNOME users to train spam
filtering software (e.g. SpamBayes or SpamAssassin) that "learns" how to
tell the difference between real email (ham) and unsolicited messages
(spam). Not all email clients have spam filtering (and training) built
in, and training external filtering programs can be fiddly. Spam Trainer
provides easy (drag and drop) training from the Evolution mail client, and
should work just as well with any email client that supports the drag and
drop protocol implemented by the GTK+ toolkit.

[070] - Unix Mobile Agents 1.5
  by Christopher Dahn (http://freshmeat.net/users/chrisdahn/)
  Sun, Oct 17th 2004 18:45

Information Management
Scientific/Engineering
System :: Logging

About: Unix Mobile Agents is a generic, flexible, easy to use mobile
agent architecture implemented in a set of bash scripts. This design is
made to be trivial to deploy and setup. Agents can be configured to
traverse the network in sorted order, in user defined order, or as a
random walk. They can also run in a repeated loop, or in a single pass
through the network. Connections are made via public-key SSH
authentication, and the screen utility is used to allow agents to run
without requiring terminals.

Changes: The generic agent script now pulls from $0 the name of the agent
to run, making agent_functions more generic, and usable by homemade agent
scripts. An inter-agent messaging feature has been added, allowing agents
to pass multi-line messages to each other on the agent PID level, or
broadcast on the agent task level.

[078] - Yawda 0.9.2
  by Quentin Anciaux (http://freshmeat.net/users/allcolor/)
  Sun, Oct 17th 2004 06:57

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: Yawda is an MVC Web development application framework based on
Struts. With it, you can easily output HTML, SVG, PNG, JPEG, PDF, RTF,
XML, JS, CSS (and any text file) with data from several sources. It uses
cayenne ORM (or another tool like jaxor, hibernates, or jdbc) and rhinoJS
or Java for the model, Struts for the controller, and Velocity/iText/Batik
for the view component.

Changes: A race condition in the CRequestWrapper addEndRequestListener
method was corrected. A custom HTTP sessions implementation is used, so
sessions can be serialized on the file system or in a blob field in the
database. A bug in the CNavigationItem class where form parameters were
not set correctly was corrected. The cache system is directly checked in
the filter before the request goes on to the application. A bug was
corrected in the CDatasourceRealm which occurred when sometimes it
couldn't find the datasource.
