[001] - AudienceConnect 0.1.3 (RemoteEditor)
  by Richard Harris (http://freshmeat.net/users/goosequill/)
  Thu, Oct 21st 2004 15:36

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: AudienceConnect is a revenue-generating Python CGI solution for
independent content providers. Requests for dynamic content are routed
through PayPal. Previews of that content are generated as static HTML for
search engines to harvest. Self-publishers can upload and publish
remotely, or the editorial CGI can be used to view and publish
submissions. Demo site content is plain text, but AudienceConnect can be
extended to deliver any digital content: sound files, image files, etc.
Installation is very simple; no database technologies are used. The
related modules are completely independent and require only access to
Python 1.5.2 in your cgi-bin.

Changes: An improperly named constant has been fixed.

[004] - Bacula 1.36.0
  by Kern Sibbald (http://freshmeat.net/users/kern/)
  Thu, Oct 21st 2004 01:39

System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: Bacula is a set of programs that allow you to manage the backup,
recovery, and verification of computer data across a network of different
computers. It is based on a client/server architecture and is efficient
and relatively easy to use, while offering many advanced storage
management features that make it easy to find and recover lost or damaged
files.

Changes: This release featured a tray monitor program, a rescue CD-ROM for
emergencies, a CD Image Manager, bugfixes, and improved stability. UTF-8 is
now supported in conio. Certain open files (such as those opened by Word)
can now be saved on Win32 systems. Sending a SIGHUP to the Director now
causes it to reload its configuration file. The termination clause of the
license was modified.

  Thu, Oct 21st 2004 10:15

Games/Entertainment :: Arcade
Games/Entertainment :: Puzzle Games

About: Bastet ("bastard tetris") is an ncurses Tetris clone which is
harder than every other tetris released. It is based on a heuristics
engine which tries to detect which block you need or don't need, and then
gives you the blocks that you don't need. For instance, if you usually
play by leaving long "canyons" one square wide and then waiting for the
long "I" block, you'll have to wait till eternity before you see it. The
heuristics have been worked on for some time and are quite nasty.

Changes: Minor bugfixes. Thanks to those who reported them. There is a
brand new AI that should provide much less boring gameplay and avoid some
flaws of the old one.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Perl Modules

About: The Benchmark::Timer class allows you to time portions of code
conveniently, as well as benchmark code by allowing timings of repeated
trials. It is perfect for when you need more precise information about the
running time of portions of your code than the Benchmark module will give
you, but don't want to go all out and profile your code.

Changes: get_report was renamed to report, and the reports method was
added. The documentation was clarified.

[014] - Conary 0.10.11

  Thu, Oct 21st 2004 10:27

Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup

About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather then having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.

Changes: Chained dependency resolution (A depends on B, which depends on
C) is faster by more than an order of magnitude in many cases. A bug in
the client that prevented source files from being properly flagged in the
repository is now fixed. The conary query command now prints flavor
information when multiple flavors of the same version of a trove are
installed, and the conary repquery command's --all option now provides
better-formatted output. Absolute changesets are converted to relative
changesets more efficiently.

arguments check was added to TableStructure and WriterList. A new
"test.dbf" sample was included along with "tolowercase" and "touppercase"
rendering filters and a SqlMultipleFileWriter writer. A
SqlInsertRendererFromDBF function was added. A check is now performd to
ensure that the number of values equals the number of fields. Better
exception handling was implemented. "removedoublequotes" now only remove

  by Zionly (http://freshmeat.net/users/zionly/)
  Thu, Oct 21st 2004 07:40

System :: Systems Administration

About: Diogene87 is a powerful job scheduling system. It features
centralized management, jobs dependencies, start conditions, planning, a
log of job activity job monitoring, statistics for job durations, and
resource control.

Changes: New features are available. You can use lock-variable properties
of a task to describe critical session. You can change cyclical properties
of a task to execute a task more than one time in a day. You can rename
referentials ("rsn"), tasks ("rtsn"), jobs ("rjsn"), and rules ("rrsn") in
dg87d. You can disable a task to temporarily avoid the selection of a task
when a day is created ("rtse" command). Jobs whose paths are empty or
whose queues are not specified are deleted. For the first time, Fedora

[021] - Dnsmasq 2.16
  by Simon Kelley (http://freshmeat.net/users/simonkelley/)
  Thu, Oct 21st 2004 15:43

Internet :: Name Service (DNS)

About: Dnsmasq is a lightweight, easy to configure DNS forwarder and DHCP
server. It is designed to provide DNS and (optionally) DHCP to a small
network. It can serve the names of local machines which are not in the
global DNS. The DHCP server integrates with the DNS server and allows
machines with DHCP-allocated addresses to appear in the DNS with names
configured either in each host or in a central configuration file. Dnsmasq
supports static and dynamic DHCP leases and BOOTP for network booting of
diskless machines.

Changes: This release has some minor new features; RFC 3397 support,
better CNAME caching, and a few more flexible options. It fixes an
interaction with Linux kernels after 2.4.19 or so, where receiving a UDP
packet with a bad checksum can cause dnsmasq to hang. It also fixes a bad
interaction with the Polipo Web cache. Compilation under OpenBSD works
again, and the NetBSD configuration has been updated.

System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: filewatcher is a Perl program that uses RCS to maintain a local
file archive repository. A configuration file details which files and
directories to monitor and to whom reports should be delivered.

Changes: A new 'transform-report' option leaves the archived file intact
and only changes the report content. The 'mailto-subject' option has been

Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
System :: Networking

About: MIB Smithy is an application for SNMP and COPS developers, MIB and
PIB designers, and Internet-draft authors. It provides a GUI-based
environment for designing, editing, and compiling MIB and PIB modules
according to the SMIv1, SMIv2, and COPS-PR-SPPI standards. It accelerates

[058] - Port Scan Attack Detector 1.3.4
  by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
  Thu, Oct 21st 2004 08:08

System :: Networking :: Firewalls
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: Port Scan Attack Detector (psad) is a collection of three
lightweight system daemons written in Perl and C that are designed to work
with Linux iptables firewalling code to detect port scans and other suspect
traffic. It features a set of highly configurable danger thresholds (with
sensible defaults provided), verbose alert messages that include the
source, destination, scanned port range, begin and end times, TCP flags
and corresponding nmap options, email alerting, DShield reporting, and
automatic blocking of offending IP addresses via dynamic configuration of
iptables firewall rulesets. In addition, psad incorporates many of the
TCP, UDP, and ICMP signatures included in Snort to detect highly suspect
scans for various backdoor programs (e.g. EvilFTP, GirlFriend, SubSeven),
DDoS tools (mstream, shaft), and advanced port scans (syn, fin, Xmas)
which are easily leveraged against a machine via nmap. Psad also uses
packet TTL, IP id, TOS, and TCP window sizes to passively fingerprint the
remote operating system from which scans originate.

Changes: Bidirectional iptables auto-blocking support was added for all
chains except for the INPUT and OUTPUT chains. Syslog message support was
improved when run in auto-blocking mode. An iptables auto-block rules
section was added to --Status output. An init script for Fedora systems
was added. The default_log() function was added to IPTables::Parse. This

[059] - PyX 0.7
  by André Wobst (http://freshmeat.net/users/wobsta/)
  Thu, Oct 21st 2004 10:30

Multimedia :: Graphics
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization
Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules

About: PyX is a Python package for the creation of encapsulated PostScript
figures. It provides both an abstraction of PostScript and a TeX/LaTeX
interface. Complex tasks like 2D and 3D plots in publication-ready quality
are built out of these primitives.

Changes: This release adds support for inclusion of bitmaps. The path
system has undergone a major revision and cleanup. The handling of short
path elements was enhanced considerably to prevent numerical
instabilities. The data and style handling in the graph system was
completely reorganized. It is now possible to combine several graph styles
within a single plot instruction.

Software Development :: Embedded Systems
Software Development :: Quality Assurance
Software Development :: Testing

About: RTAI Testsuite LiveCD allows you to determine whether your system's
hardware is capable of being used as a hard real-time system. The
accompanying Web site provides information about the real-time performance
of various systems, which might help you when buying hardware for building
hard real-time systems. The LiveCD is based on RTAI (Realtime Application
Interface) and provides easy-to-use menus that guide users through running
the test suite and submitting the results and system configuration
information to an Internet database.

Changes: A submitter identifier now now optionall by submitted. UP and
LXRT preempt test results are now submitted, and the output during test
runs is now cleaner and more consistent. The test now reports if the
database submission was succesful or not, and progress bars are shown for
operations that take a while to complete. The program now warns if a
floppy disk is not available. After running the tests, you can now get
multiple shells.

[063] - SafeHTML 1.2.0.
  by kukutz (http://freshmeat.net/users/kukutz/)
  Thu, Oct 21st 2004 08:28

Internet
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries

About: SafeHTML is an anti-XSS HTML parser, written in PHP. It strips down
all potentially dangerous content within HTML: opening tags without closing
tags, closing tags without opening tags, certain attributes (on*, data*,
dynsrc, javascript:/vbscript:/about:, etc.), protocols, expressions or
behavior in styles, and any other active content.

Changes: The "id" and "name" attributes were added to the list of
dangerous attributes, because a malefactor can break legal Javascript by
spoofing the ID or NAME of an element. The new parse() method allows you
to do the whole parsing process in two lines of code. The examples were
updated. SafeHTML now produces more XHTML compliant code (li and p are
closed correctly). "webcal" was added to the white list of protocols for
users of calendar programs (Mozilla/iCal/etc). SafeHTML now strips down
table elements when not inside a table.

[064] - sg_utils and sg3_utils 1.09 (Linux 2.4)
  by Douglas Gilbert (http://freshmeat.net/users/dpgilbert/)
  Thu, Oct 21st 2004 21:32

About: sg_utils and sg3_utils are packages that contain tools for working
with devices that use the SCSI command set. They include variants of the
Unix dd command called sg_dd and sgp_dd that speed copies to, from, and
between SCSI disks and CDROMs. sg_map and sg_scan supply information about
SCSI devices and how they are related to other drivers. There are utilities
for timing and testing SCSI devices and retrieving mode and log page data.
The sg3_utils package is for the Linux 2.4 and 2.6 series, while sg_utils
is for the 2.2 series with some support for the 2.0 series.

Changes: This release adds four utilities: sg_ses, sg_verify, sg_requests,
and sg_emc_trespass. sg_ses allows SCSI enclosures to be queried, while
sg_verify verifies SCSI disks. This release also includes a new libsgutils
library, which all the utilities now rely upon.

[065] - sherpa 0.1.7
  by raind0g (http://freshmeat.net/users/raind0g/)
  Thu, Oct 21st 2004 23:47

Security

About: sherpa is a tool for configuring and then checking system security
via the console. Written in perl, it allows an admin to maintain a custom
database of file and directory permissions and ownership attributes as
local needs dictate. Any changes from the prescribed layout will be
detected each time sherpa is run. Also, sherpa does some basic system
checks (world-writable files, .rhosts and hosts.equiv files, etc.) that
help the busy admin keep on top of a system.

Changes: This release includes a couple of minor bug fixes, new checks for
orphaned files, some documentation changes and cleanup, and a Slackware 9.1
version of perms.lst.

[066] - SMS Server Tools 1.14.7
  by Stefan Frings (http://freshmeat.net/users/sfrings/)
  Thu, Oct 21st 2004 08:46

Communications

About: The SMS Server Tools were made to send and receive SMS from one or
many GSM modems. They include a send/receive daemon and some sample
scripts to build an SMS email gateway and for logging into an SQL
database. The daemon waits for files in an outgoing spool directory and
sends them. It puts all received SMS in an incoming spool directory, and
can call any external program for incoming or outgoing notification.

Changes: The program and all its sub-programs are now running in an
individual process group. Previously, smsd killed some other programs
accidentally on exit. This does not happen anymore.

[067] - Socat 1.4.0.3 (Stable)
  by Gerhard Rieger (http://freshmeat.net/users/rieger/)
  Thu, Oct 21st 2004 18:54

Utilities

About: Socat is a relay for bidirectional data transfer between two
independent data channels. Each of these data channels may be a file,
pipe, device (terminal or modem, etc.), socket (Unix, IP4, IP6 - raw, UDP,
TCP), a client for SOCKS4, proxy CONNECT, or SSL, etc. It provides forking,
logging, and dumping, different modes for interprocess communication, and
many more options. It can be used, for example, as a TCP relay (one-shot
or daemon), as a daemon-based socksifier, as a shell interface to Unix
sockets, as an IP6 relay, for redirecting TCP-oriented programs to a
serial line, or to establish a relatively secure environment (su and
chroot) for running client or server shell scripts with network
connections.

Changes: A format string vulnerability has been found and fixed that
might have allowed a local or remote attacker to execute arbitrary code
in the context of the socat process.

[070] - Templatized C++ Command Line Parser 1.0.0
  by mes5k (http://freshmeat.net/users/mes5k/)
  Thu, Oct 21st 2004 10:29

About: Templatized C++ Command Line Parser is a simple library for parsing
commandline arguments. It provides a simple, flexible, object-oriented
interface to the commandline that automates the parsing, USAGE creation,
and type casting common with commandline handling.

Changes: The implementation of the library is moved entirely into the
header files, eliminating the need for a separate library. New
constructors have been added to the various Arg classes that allow them to
be constructed with a CmdLine reference. You can now easily change the
output of the library by overriding CmdLine and the relevant methods.
Several style changes have been made in the code base to conform better to
C++ best practices. Project files for the building the examples in
Microsoft Visual Studio are included.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Wi.Ser is a Java/XML server-side GUI-framework which enables an
application to run as either a monolithic Swing app, a client/server Swing
app, or as a Web app without any change. It includes a mixed deployment
mode, which supports one server to serve Swing clients and Web clients at
the same time. The framework uses XML to define an application's GUI. It
provides a common widget-based, object-oriented programming interface for
Web and Swing GUIs, which prevents the developer from struggling with HTML
and HTTP or with the internals of Swing. For Swing client/server
applications the client/server split as well as the client/server
communication is handled transparently by the framework. The project
includes a GUI builder that is based on the framework's functionality
(screenshot, deployed as a Web/HTML application).

Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers

About: Wodan is an Apache module for reverse proxying and caching of

cached through a custom HTTP header, which makes it very flexible. It
caches on the local filesystem, which makes it very easy to create custom
purging systems. Expiration of cachefiles is also supported, as well as
no-caching options.

Changes: Web objects from the backend such as pages and graphics are no
longer stored in memory but are written to the client and cache file
immediately. Cache files are now written into different directories,
cutting down on the size of the directories holding them. Many code
cleanups were made.
