Fri, Oct 22nd 2004 06:11
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: Astaro Security Linux is an all-in-one network security gateway
that includes a firewall, intrusion protection, virus protection, spam
protection, URL filtering, and a VPN gateway. Features include stateful
packet inspection, deep packet filtering, application-level intrusion
detection, content filtering, virus detection for email traffic (SMTP and
POP3) and Web traffic (HTTP), whitelists and blacklists, IPSec and PPTP
VPN tunneling, spam blocking, logging and reporting. The software is built
on an embedded, especially hardened Linux distribution. The WebAdmin tool
and Up2Date service make it easy to install, manage, and update all six
security applications.
Changes: This Up2Date increases the HTTP proxy performance and fixes bugs
in mixed L2TP/non-L2TP environments, username and password for FTP, a
failure with Windows Update if virus scanning is activated, and an issue
with MiddleWare restart.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
About: AudienceConnect is a revenue-generating Python CGI solution for
independent content providers. Requests for dynamic content are routed
through PayPal. Previews of that content are generated as static HTML for
search engines to harvest. Self-publishers can upload and publish
remotely, or the editorial CGI can be used to view and publish
submissions. Demo site content is plain text, but AudienceConnect can be
extended to deliver any digital content: sound files, image files, etc.
Installation is very simple; no database technologies are used. The
related modules are completely independent and require only access to
Python 1.5.2 in your cgi-bin.

Communications :: Email :: Filters
Internet
Text Processing :: Filters
About: DSPAM is a server-side statistical anti-spam agent for Unix email
servers. It masquerades as the email server's local delivery agent and
effectively filters spam using a combination of de-obfuscation techniques,
specialized algorithms, and statistical analysis. The result is an
administratively maintenance-free, self-learning anti-spam tool. DSPAM has
yielded real-world success rates beyond 99.9% accuracy with less than a
0.01% chance of false positives.
Changes: A SQLite storage driver has been added. Windows build support has
been added. A central dspam.conf configuration file in now used to
configure most operations. Sparse Binary Polynomial Hashing has been
added. A preferences extension API has been added, allowing the storage of
preferences in some databases. An attributes API has been added to
libdspam, allowing developers to configure the storage driver and other
options internally. Many other enhancements and bugfixes have been made.

by Andreas Klauer (http://freshmeat.net/users/aklauer/)
Fri, Oct 22nd 2004 12:58
Internet
Internet :: Proxy Servers
System
About: Fair NAT is a script for configuring NAT on dedicated Linux
routers. It's designed to be highly customizable and therefore well
documented. A configuration file lets you specify which clients on your
LAN should be allowed to use the router, which ports are to be forwarded
to which client, and much more. It uses the kernel's Traffic Shaping
capabilities to share bandwidth in a fair manner among users. Some kernel
patches are recommended for better performance. Experimental support for
peer-to-peer traffic detection is available.
Changes: It's now possible to specify maximum upload and download rates
other than the total available bandwidth. This is useful, for example, if
you don't want any single user to get more than 300kbit/s on a 500kbit/s
line. User-specific rates are still not possible.

Fri, Oct 22nd 2004 07:27
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Software Development :: Libraries
About: GiNaC (GiNaC is Not a CAS (Computer Algebra System)) is a C++
library for symbolic calculations. It is designed to allow the creation of
integrated systems that embed symbolic manipulations together with more
established areas of computer science (like computation-intense numeric
applications, graphical interfaces, etc.). Contrary to other CASes it does
not try to provide extensive algebraic capabilities and a simple
programming language but instead accepts a given language (C++) and
extends it by a set of algebraic capabilities.
Changes: Basic symbolic and numeric integration facilities have been
added, the Clifford classes have been significantly extended, and multiple
polylogarithms can now be evaluated numerically for arbitrary arguments.

[035] - MoSSHe 1.1.6
by Volker Tanger (http://freshmeat.net/users/vtanger/)
Fri, Oct 22nd 2004 17:16
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: MoSSHe (MOnitoring with SSH Environment) is a simple, lightweight
(both in size and system requirements) server monitoring package designed
for secure and in-depth monitoring of a number of typical Internet
systems. It was developed to keep the impact on network and performance
low, and to use a safe, encrypted connection for in-depth inspection of
the system checked. It is not possible to remotely run (more or less
arbitrary) commands via the monitoring system, nor is unsafe cleartext
SNMP messaging necessary (yet possible). A read-only Web interface makes
monitoring and status checks simple (and safe) for admins and helpdesk.
Checking scripts for remote and local systems (disk space, load,
processes, users), common services (SMTP, POP3, HTTP) and SNMP queries are
included.
Changes: A disk check in LOCALCHECK has been correted so that hanging
network mounts do not hang MOSSHE. An SSH v1 remote check has been added.

[067] - YACY Proxy 0.29
by Michael Christen (http://freshmeat.net/users/Orbiter/)
Fri, Oct 22nd 2004 06:19
Communications :: File Sharing
Information Management
Internet :: Name Service (DNS)
About: The YACY Proxy is a caching HTTP/HTTPS proxy. Pages that pass
through the proxy are indexed and can be searched using a built-in HTTP
server. Proxies connect each other and form a P2P-based index exchange
network based on distributed hash tables. The proxy can therefore be used
as a global search and distributed indexing engine for the Web. It also
provides URL filtering with blacklist sharing among other proxy peers,
individual Web/servlet page hosting, a file sharing zone, and a database
engine.
Changes: This release includes an option to start explicit crawling and
indexing jobs, a monitoring interface for crawling activities, and a new
caching procedure for database requests on the filesystem level.
