[001] - abcm2ps 4.7.7 (Development)
by Guido Gonzato (http://freshmeat.net/users/goccia/)
Tue, Oct 26th 2004 05:25
Printing
About: abcm2ps is a package that converts music tunes from ABC format to
PostScript. Based on abc2ps version 1.2.5, it was developed mainly to
print baroque organ scores that have independant voices played on one or
more keyboards, and a pedal-board. It introduces many extensions to the
ABC language that make it suitable for classical music.
Changes: This release improves the PostScript Level 1 emulation, so the
output is now readable by the free version of the Rops PostScript
interpreter. The "%%dateformat" command is treated as an ABC string. The
"hyphen" PostScript function was added. Several bugs were fixed.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players
About: AppleRecords is a DAAP (digital audio access protocol) client fully
capable of streaming music from DAAP servers, including iTunes 4 and 4.5 as
well as daapd on Linux. It automatically finds all DAAP libraries on the
local network via Rendezvous, and can play any MP3 that they may contain
(support for other media types is forthcoming).
Changes: This release completely reworks the codebase, adding a new,
better UI with more info displayed in a nicer layout, continuous text
search of the library (ala iTunes), and song downloading.

by Richard Harris (http://freshmeat.net/users/goosequill/)
Tue, Oct 26th 2004 10:59
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
About: AudienceConnect is a revenue-generating Python CGI solution for
independent content providers. Requests for dynamic content are routed
through PayPal. Previews of that content are generated as static HTML for
search engines to harvest. Self-publishers can upload and publish
remotely, or the editorial CGI can be used to view and publish
submissions. Demo site content is plain text, but AudienceConnect can be
extended to deliver any digital content: sound files, image files, etc.
Installation is very simple; no database technologies are used. The
related modules are completely independent and require only access to
Python 1.5.2 in your cgi-bin.
Changes: This release adds password generation as with SecureEditor for
broader secure access. Handling of existing HTML has been fixed. The
unused example_page method has been removed. There are minor documentation
fixes.

[006] - Bash.Diff 1.9
by William Park (http://freshmeat.net/users/opengeometry/)
Tue, Oct 26th 2004 14:19
Database :: Front-Ends
System :: Shells
About: Bash.Diff is a patch against Bash that incorporates many useful
features from Awk, Python, Zsh, Ksh, and others. In the main core, it adds
the following: new brace expansion {a..b}, new parameter expansion
${var|...}, new command substitution $(=...), extended for, while, and
until loops, extended case statement, new try-block with integer
exception, and new here document <<+. As builtin commands, it adds the
following: sscanf(3), <string.h>, and <ctype.h> wrappers, a variety of
array and regex(3) operations, GDBM, SQLite, PostgreSQL, and MySQL
database interfaces, an HTML template engine (BASP), stack/queue
operations on positional parameters and arrays, Expat XML parser
interface, simple x-y character plot, DOS line support, and simple Awk
emulation.
Changes: This release adds shell versions of isupper(3), islower(3), and
other C functions from <ctype.h>. Now that Bash has pretty good coverage
of <string.h> and <ctype.h>, similar features in parameter expansion
${var|...} have been eliminated or moved to dynamically loadable
built-ins.

[016] - Cpsed 0.2
by Giuseppe Torelli (http://freshmeat.net/users/gt67/)
Tue, Oct 26th 2004 03:01
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors
About: Cpsed is a Linux OpenGL 3D scene editor built with the Qt library.
It allows the user to import .3ds model files and to position, rotate, and
scale each of them. The 3ds loader also loads the textures in JPEG, BMP, or
TGA format. The DFF Renderware format is also supported. The save file
format is pure ASCII with comma separated values.
Changes: DFF RenderWare support added with texture loading, and basic
light was added in the scene. std::string is now used for better handling
of strings in the TextureLoader class. A small bug with setting the scale
when loading the scene was fixed along with a problem in the handling of
the vector array containing the coordinates. Targa images compressed with
the RLE algorithm are now supported.

Text Processing
Text Processing :: General
Text Processing :: Markup
About: deplate is a tool for converting documents written in an
unobtrusive, wiki-like markup to LaTeX, DocBook, HTML, or "HTML slides".
It supports embedded LaTeX code, footnotes, citations, bibliographies,
automatic generation of an index, etc. In contrast to many wiki engines,
it is made for "offline" use as a document preparation tool. In this
respect it is similar to tools like aft or txt2tags. It aims to be
modular and easily extensible. It is the accompanying converter for the
Vim viki plugin.
Changes: Many small changes were made to make the tool more consistent and
stable. The standard markup for emphasis and code was changed, though a
module was provided to re-enable the old markup. You can now define simple
regions, macros, and commands inline without writing any Ruby code. Regions
can be indented. An improved navigation bar for HTML slides was included.
Arguments to regions, macros, and commands can now be put in double
quotes. Support for Russian was added and Chinese support was improved.
New macros, commands, and elements were added.

for offline and dialup sites.
Changes: Uses random source ports in DNS queries to increase security and
avoid some problems related to NATing. It is now possible to disable the
use of the PID file to allow more than one process running on the same
host. This is useful in split DNS configurations.

About: JExpress Professional lets you create multiplatform, multilingual
installers and auto-updaters. An easy-to-use Swing interface lets you
design your installers quickly without requiring any programming. You can
build a single installer for multiple products or install types. It allows
you to efficiently customize your installers using Java. JExpress
Professional goes beyond just building Java installations; it can also
select the exact classes your Java app uses, build your directory tree,
and produce JAR files. JExpress Professional can even use a sophisticated
algorithm to upload your software to your Web site without user
intervention. It can create native installers for Windows, Linux, Mac OS
X, and Solaris that install the JVM if it isn't already installed.
Changes: JExpress installers are now more robust when installing on a
system that has a bad JVM installed. Additionally, they better organize
menus and scripts on the various platforms (Windows, Unix, and Mac). While
creating an installer project, JExpress now warns about more common
configuration errors that could prevent the installer from working as
desired. The API for customization has also been enhanced.

through displaying full screen (rescaled if necessary) random images from
the directory until the "q" key is pressed or the frame is killed.
Changes: In addition to use as simple but effective slideshow program, the
program can now be used to rewrite images with the date superimposed or to
reduce the file size by increasing compression. This is useful for when
sending out for digital prints and compressing images on your electronic
picture frame. This release included a more logical interface, a pause
mode that works as expected, and minor internal changes.

[072] - Nettle library 1.11
by Niels Möller (http://freshmeat.net/users/nielsm/)
Tue, Oct 26th 2004 14:23
Security :: Cryptography
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Nettle is a cryptographic library that is designed to fit easily in
more or less any context: in crypto toolkits for object-oriented languages
(C++, Python, Pike, etc.), in applications like LSH or GNUPG, or even in
kernel space. In most contexts, you need more than the basic cryptographic
algorithms; you also need some way to keep track of available algorithms
and their properties and variants. You often have some algorithm selection
process, often dictated by a protocol you want to implement. And as the
requirements of applications differ in subtle and not so subtle ways, an
API that fits one application well can be a pain to use in a different
context, which is why there are so many different cryptographic libraries
around. Nettle tries to avoid this problem by doing one thing, the
low-level crypto stuff, and providing a simple but general interface to
it. In particular, Nettle doesn't do algorithm selection. It doesn't do
memory allocation. It doesn't do any I/O. The idea is that one can build
several application- and context-specific interfaces on top of Nettle and
share the code, testcases, benchmarks, documentation, etc.
Changes: Automake is no longer used. Support for arctwo. Fixes to the
libdes compatibility code. By default, the static library is compiled as
position independent code. This is needed on some systems to make it
possible to link nettle into a dynamically loaded module. Stricter
constness typing for the sexp_iterator_assoc and sexp_iterator_check_types
arguments. Minor tweaks of arcfour on x86 CPUs, to speed it up on older x86
variants such as PII and PPro. The shared library is intended to be binary
compatible with nettle 1.8 through1.10.

[088] - rearview 0.2.0
by Johannes Hanika (http://freshmeat.net/users/jhanika/)
Tue, Oct 26th 2004 10:56
Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Rendering
About: Rearview is a three dimensional computer graphics engine which fits
both human perception and the shape of the real world better than common
polygon renderers do. It is not meant to be a very sharp-shaped,
high-contrast engine. Rearview's strength are grown things, dirty things,
and bumpy things, like smooth hills and old walls. To achieve this,
rearview uses a raytracing algorithm to visualise voxels stored in an
octree. This data structure makes it possible to easily switch levels of
detail and potentially even generate more detail on the fly with some
fractal method.
Changes: Most of the important functions have been rewritten since the
last release. There is now a new raycasting algorithm that makes it
possible to use a more compact tree format, so the tree generator has been
reimplemented. It is now faster due to bounding boxes and should not create
leaks anymore. The camera now uses an adaptive, interruptible sampling
technique and the radiosity algorithm is based on a Monte-Carlo method.

[094] - SquidClamAV Redirector 1.3
by Michael Lang (http://freshmeat.net/users/nuddelaug/)
Tue, Oct 26th 2004 03:25
Internet :: Proxy Servers
About: SquidClamAV Redirector is a Squid helper script which adds virus
scanning for defined filename extensions. It has been tested with Python,
pyclamav, ClamAV, and Squid. Squid has to be configured to use
"redirect_program" and to either deny access to a URL defined in the SCAVR
configuration or to redirect to a remote Site which displays an error (and
some information). SCAVR handles the request as given from Squid,
downloads the URL, and scans it for known viruses. It rewrites the URL
from Squid to a blocked URL or an information page with information about
the scanning results.
Changes: The Urlfetch code was rewritten to use the URLopener Object from
urllib. It now sets the "User-Agent" String and no seperate temporary file
handling is used. As the URLopener takes advantage of caching, a "when to
cleanup the cache" option was added to the script. A Debug section was
added to the Config, which makes it possible to control what is logged.
The possible options are "Infected", "Clean", "Ignored", and "Error".

About: Steel Bank Common Lisp is a development environment for Common
Lisp, with excellent support for the ANSI standard: garbage collection,
lexical closures, powerful macros, strong dynamic typing, incremental
compilation, and the famous Common Lisp Object System (multimethods and
all). It also includes many extensions, such as native threads, socket
support, a statistical profiler, programmable streams, and more. These are
all available through an integrated, interactive native compiler which
feels like an interpreter. SBCL is unique in being a multiplatform native
compiler which bootstraps itself completely from source, using a C
compiler and any other ANSI Common Lisp implementation.
Changes: Support for saving runtime cores with foreign code loaded has
been added for x86/NetBSD and SPARC/Linux. Loop detection and register

[096] - SwingSet 0.9.0-beta
by Brian E. Pangburn (http://freshmeat.net/users/Yoda2/)
Tue, Oct 26th 2004 10:58
Database :: Front-Ends
About: SwingSet is a Java toolkit that allows the standard Java Swing
components to be made database-aware. The SwingSet feature set includes
database binding for text boxes, combo boxes, and checkboxes, masked
editing of text boxes, binding of a "hidden" numeric column for combo
boxes with text choices (e.g. 0, 1, and 2 are stored for "Yes," "No," and
"Maybe," respectively), population of combo boxes based on columns in a
database query (can also be used for combo box-based record navigation), a
graphical record navigator (allows for database traversal, insertion,
deletion, commit, and rollback), and a data grid component (with support
for spreadsheet cut & paste) for creating datasheet/spreadsheet/table
views of queries.
Changes: A datasource abstraction layer has been added. All of the
SwingSet components are now based on a new SSRowSet interface rather than
Sun's RowSet interface. The SSRowSet differs from RowSet in two important
ways. First, SSRowSet extends Serializable, which greatly facilitates
serialization/deserialization in the rest of the SwingSet components.
Secondly, SSRowSet only contains methods necessary to support the data
types in used by SSTextDocument, which will make writing SSRowSet
implementations for non-updatable RowSets and other non-database
datasources much easier.
