Thu, Oct 28th 2004 03:59
Database :: Front-Ends
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Compilers
About: Eleven is a programming language for creating robust, scalable Web
applications. Eleven reduces code size by roughly 20 to 1 over traditional
server programming languages like PHP, ASP, and mod_perl. From high-level
source code with a C-like syntax, the Eleven compiler generates
database-backed Web applications that are fault-tolerant, offer a high
level of data security, and can be scaled through replication. The
compiler produces complete mod_perl programs that run under the Apache Web
server, so no special runtime support is required.

[022] - fairly fast packet filter 1.3.2
by Willem de Bruijn (http://freshmeat.net/users/wdebruij/)
Thu, Oct 28th 2004 10:18
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux
About: The fairly fast packet filter (FFPF) is an approach to network
packet processing that adds many new features to existing filtering
solutions like BPF. It is designed for high speed by pushing
computationally intensive tasks to the kernel or even network processors
and by minimising packet copying. By providing both a richer programming
language and explicit extensibility, it is also considerably more
flexible than existing approaches. It provides a complete solution for
network monitoring that caters to all applications available today. Using
its extensibility, the language can even be used as a meta- filter to
"script" together filters from other approaches, such as BPF.
Changes: This release adds a script that automatically builds libpcap and
tcpdump with FFPF as the backend instead of LSF and removes code that led
to deprecated warnings.

a number of existing standards related to markup languages, including the
XML standard, Namespaces in XML, XML Base, Relax NG, RFC 2396, XPath,
XPointer, HTML4, XInclude, SGML Catalogs, and XML Catalogs. In most cases,
libxml tries to implement the specifications in a relatively strict way. To
some extent, it provides support for the following specifications, but
doesn't claim to implement them: DOM, FTP client, HTTP client, and SAX2.
Support for W3C XML Schemas is in progress. It includes xmllint, a command

[046] - Magellan Metasearch beta-5
by badibouzouk (http://freshmeat.net/users/badibouzouk/)
Thu, Oct 28th 2004 10:55
Communications
Information Management
Information Management :: Records Management
About: Magellan Metasearch is a modular meta search engine, enabling users
to monitor as many search engines as they want and use a complex query
language with full boolean syntax and proximity operators, which is much
more elaborate than languages provided by Google, Altavista, etc. It can
be fed any sources, since its abstraction layer manages the search results
and their meta tags in a uniform way. In conjunction with the local process
scheduler (such as "cron"), Magellan enables you to save your requests and
replay them later automatically: new results are sent through email in
real time.
Changes: This version fixes several bug conditions while monitoring search
engine results. The results interface has been improved in order to
separate the metadata from the description. Most recent search results are
now shown first, and all the existing drivers now include error checking
code to eliminate bogus URLs returned by some search engines.

About: Mantaray is a serverless messaging fabric, based on peer-to-peer
technology and 100% pure Java. It supports JMS 1.1 and 1.02, and
integrates with WebLogic and WebSphere. It provides guaranteed message
delivery, security, and supports transactions.
Changes: It is now possible to enter 0.0.0.0 as the IP for MantaRay in
world.xml. MantaRay will then automatically detect the computer's IP and
bind to it. Additionally, automatic discovery has been modified to
advertise the real IP and not the 0.0.0.0 which appears in world.xml.

Thu, Oct 28th 2004 11:51
Communications :: Email :: Filters
Security
About: MIMEDefang is a flexible MIME email scanner designed to do all
kinds of email processing, including anti-virus scanning, anti-spam
scanning, replacing parts of messages with URLs, adding boilerplate
disclaimers, and so on. It can alter or delete various parts of a MIME
message according to a Perl-based policy filter. It can also bounce
messages with unacceptable attachments and modify SMTP response codes on
the fly. It works with the Sendmail 8.11 and newer "Milter" API, which
makes it more flexible and efficient than procmail-based approaches.
Changes: This release has a mechanism for Perl slaves to report back their
status to the multiplexor. This allows you to see exactly what each
scanning slave is doing at a given point in time. This release also
features support for the "csav" virus-scanner from Command Software, and
better support for Trend Micro's command line scanner. The algorithm that
reconstructs MIME messages after modification is greatly improved and
avoids creating useless multipart containers with only a single sub-part.

Thu, Oct 28th 2004 06:45
Communications :: Email :: Mailing List Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: PHPlist is a mailing list and newsletter manager that allows
posting via a Web page. It works well when used for announcements, and can
handle very large email address lists. Users can sign up to multiple lists,
but will only receive a single copy of cross-posted messages. When signing
up, users can identify their geographical location, and messages can be
targetted to these. You can add place holders in your email that will be
replaced with personal details (such as the person's name). Users can
update their own information, and unlike many other mailing list systems,
they can change their email address. HTML emails are supported.
Changes: This release added external admin authentication to facilitate
integration with other projects. A date type was added for user
attributes. It is now possible to specify exclusions for lists, which is
useful when you wnat to send a message to users on a list except for those
that are members of another list. Blacklisting was added and bugfixes,

by OpenGroupware.org (http://freshmeat.net/users/helge5/)
Thu, Oct 28th 2004 10:55
Software Development :: Libraries
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
About: The SOPE package is an extensive set of frameworks (16 frameworks,
~1500 classes) which form a complete Web application server environment.
Besides the Apple WebObjects compatible appserver extended with Zope
concepts, it contains a large set of reusable classes: XML processing
(SAX, DOM, XML-RPC), MIME/IMAP4 processing, LDAP connectivity, RDBMS
connectivity, and iCalendar parsing. The parts of the package can be used
stand-alone (e.g. in Cocoa applications) and do not require the appserver
parts. For MacOSX developers, the package includes SOPE:X, which contains
special Xcode and Cocoa support for SOPE.
Changes: The two major changes are the replacement of iCalSaxDriver with
versitSaxDriver, which drops the dependency on libical, and the addition
of a configure script that allows for compilation without the GNUstep
environment being loaded. There are various improvements in the IMAP4
client, the WebDAV server code, and in SoMethod support for WODirectAction
objects. It is available as Debian SID and Sarge packages and as RPMs for
Fedora Core 2, Mandrake, and various SuSE versions.

[090] - TreeLine 0.10.1
by Doug Bell (http://freshmeat.net/users/Doug101/)
Thu, Oct 28th 2004 04:04
Other/Nonlisted Topic
About: TreeLine is used to organize and store text data in a tree
structure. It is well suited to keeping track of many different types of
information. Each node of the tree can contain several defined fields,
forming a mini-database. The format of each node can be defined, and the
output can be shown on the screen, printed, or exported to HTML. The tree
structure is navigated and edited in the left pane of the window, while
various views of the child data are shown and editable in the right pane.
The data is stored in XML text files. TreeLine is based on the PyQt
library.
Changes: A major bug that caused the program to hang or fail to start when

by Christos Dimitrakakis (http://freshmeat.net/users/olethrosdc/)
Thu, Oct 28th 2004 11:00
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Editors
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Sound Synthesis
About: Virtual Sound provides unlimited effects and modulation for
sophisticated audio generation, with unique instrument simulation
capabilities to craft your own unique soundscapes. All effects are
parametrized and their parameters may be controlled through the outputs of
other effects, through samples, or through special modulators. Instrument
simulation is based on recursively-linked filter networks. Actual
instruments can also be simulated through the statistical learning library
incorporated in VSound.
Changes: The stale file test_decoding.c (prevented compilation) and
useless file accounting.c have been removed. Work has begun on a simple
multiple-text search/clustering algorithm that will utilise the Graph
class and belief propagation. This has nothing to do with sound, but it is
an interesting application of probabilistic estimation. It will probably
make sense to split the probabilistic and machine learning library in the
future from the sound-related code.

About: Web Performance Trainer is a load testing and stress testing tool
for Web servers. Its statistical analysis takes your site's performance
criteria, and determines the number of users your Web site can handle.
Because data is collected at the URL level, it not only identifies slow

the problem. Web Performance Trainer includes hard-to-find features such
as IP spoofing, client certificates, multiple simultaneous test cases,

acceleration with OpenGL, and the sound engine works better (the stop
function works and it supports another frequency than 44.1 kHz).

[095] - wyoEditor 2.1.5
by Otto Wyss (http://freshmeat.net/users/wyo/)

Software Development
Text Editors
Text Editors :: Integrated Development Environments (IDE)
About: wyoEditor is a cross-platform editor based on the Scintilla editor
component. The editor has the usual features like fast editing, unlimited
undo/redo, syntax colouring, and folding for many different programming
languages. It also has a class browser, currently only for C++, and keeps
the class/function display updated. The editor allows editing of files in
tabbed notebook pages and/or separate top level windows. It supports
context-sensitive help of any kind of documentation (e.g. programming
framework descriptions) if provided as help files. The editor conforms to
the wxGuide guidelines using the wxWidgets framework.
Changes: This release adds changes to make the source code
MacOS-compatible, adds printing of a stack trace in case of a crash (Linux
and Windows), disables all dynamically-changed combo boxes under GTK since
wxWidgets/GTK has a fatal bug there, fixes handling of empty filenames,
and cleans the code.

[098] - zsync 0.0.1
by Colin Phipps (http://freshmeat.net/users/cph/)

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: zsync is a client-side implementation of the rsync algorithm. It
allows updating of files from a remote Web server without requiring a
full download or a special remote server application. It uses a metafile,
which must be created on the server, to determine which parts of a file
the user already has; it then downloads the remaining parts via HTTP. No
special server or Web server module is needed. It can also look inside
gzip files, allowing efficient update transfers even when files are
compressed.
