Can Openness Save the Internet?
by Santeri Kannisto (mailto:santeri.kannistosot.com)
Section: Editorials
Sat, Oct 30th 2004 00:00

The usefulness of the Internet has been severely compromised by a
proliferation of spam, worms, crackers, and viruses. The Internet has been
stifled by harmful traffic (and its related expenses) which have increased
to a now intolerable level. According to the U.N., UNTAD, Symantec,
F-prot, MessageLabs, and several market analysts, the financial burden of
dealing with harmful Internet traffic reached tens of billions of Euros
this year. Next year will see this increase to hundreds of billions of
Euros if the problems worsen as forecasts predict. What is destroying the
Internet, and can its collapse be prevented?

[001] - Abstract User Interface Markup Language Toolkit 3.0.1
  by alphaWorks (http://freshmeat.net/users/alphaworks/)
  Sat, Oct 30th 2004 01:25

About: The Abstract User Interface Markup Language Toolkit is a
rapid-development tool that assists developers in writing GUIs to run as
either Swing applications or on the Web without any changes. It provides
rapid prototyping with an Eclipse-based Visual Builder, a DataBean
implementation, built-in data validation, built-in internationalization,
and more.

[002] - Apache 1.3.33 (1.3)
  by Patrick Lenz (http://freshmeat.net/users/scoop/)
  Sat, Oct 30th 2004 08:38

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers

About: Apache is the world's most popular HTTP server, being quite
possibly the best around in terms of functionality, efficiency, security
and speed.

Changes: This release fixes a potential buffer overflow with escaped
characters in the SSI tag string. Responses from a remote server are
rejected if sent an invalid (negative) Content-Length. Additionally, this
release fixes query string handling for proxied URLs, a 0 bytes write into
random memory position, nonce string calculation since 1.3.31 (which would
force re-authentication for every connection if AuthDigestRealmSeed was
not configured), and a trivial bug in mod_log_forensic that caused the
child to segfault with certain invalid requests.

  Sat, Oct 30th 2004 22:39

Database :: Front-Ends
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries

About: AppWrap is a self-organizing Content Management System. All data
managed is input and maintained by users, and the program provides access
and storage. It is designed so that an administrator can easily increase
the scope of data under management. The distribution includes sample
tables and reports for recording and displaying status for project
managers. These examples can be adapted for specific needs, and complete
documentation is included for adding new data sets and custom development.
AppWrap is intended for managing mildly dynamic data without the labor of
hand-coding and managing multiple CGI forms and templates, or the expense
of CRM systems.

Changes: Recently deprecated images and other files were deleted,
&column_meta and &isMysqlNumber were refactored for performance and
memory footprint, the INSTALL file was revised, and a bug attributed to a
missing "use foo" statement was fixed.

  by Matthew Weier O'Phinney (http://freshmeat.net/users/weierophinney/)
  Sat, Oct 30th 2004 22:40

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: Cgiapp.class.php is a port of CGI::Application to PHP. It utilizes
Smarty as its default templating engine, much as CGI::Application uses
HTML::Template, due to its prevalence and acceptance in the PHP community.
Due to PHP's built-in session support, it also adds two methods, s_param()
and s_delete(), to handle session parameters. A number of static methods
have also been included to facilitate error handling and array/hash
conversion.

Changes: mode_param() was duplicating work from run() which caused a
breakage when using a method or function as a mode_param() callback; this
has been fixed. query() has been re-introduced; it creates and returns a
combined array of $_GET and $_POST. query() is now used by run() to
determine the current run mode when the run mode is expected in a form
parameter.

[012] - Common UNIX Printing System 1.1.22
  by Michael Sweet (http://freshmeat.net/users/easysw/)
  Sat, Oct 30th 2004 00:34

Internet
Printing
Software Development :: Libraries

About: CUPS provides a portable printing layer for Unix(r)-based operating
systems. It has been developed to promote a standard printing solution for
all Unix vendors and users. CUPS provides the System V and Berkeley
command line interfaces, and uses the Internet Printing Protocol ("IPP")
as the basis for managing print jobs and queues. The Line Printer Daemon
(LPD) Server Message Block (SMB), and AppSocket (a.k.a. JetDirect)
protocols are also supported with reduced functionality. CUPS adds network
printer browsing and PostScript Printer Description ("PPD") based printing
options to support real world printing under UNIX. It includes an image
file RIP that supports printing of image files to non-PostScript printers.
A customized version of GNU Ghostscript 7.05 for CUPS called ESP
Ghostscript is available separately to support printing of PostScript
files within the CUPS driver framework. Sample drivers for Dymo, EPSON,
HP, and OKIDATA printers are included that use these filters.

Changes: This release fixed device URI logging, file descriptor and memory
leaks, crashes related to printer browsing, and error handling in the
browsing code. It also added support for PostScript files from other
Windows PostScript drivers.

  by John Ogness (http://freshmeat.net/users/jogness/)
  Sat, Oct 30th 2004 14:32

Security
System :: Monitoring
System :: Operating System Kernels

About: Dazuko provides a device driver allowing 3rd-party (userland)
applications to execute file access control. It was originally developed
by H+BEDV Datentechnik GmbH to allow on-access virus scanning. Other uses
include a file-access monitor/logger or external security implementations.
It operates by intercepting file access calls and passing the file
information to a 3rd-party application. The 3rd-party application then has
the opportunity to tell the device driver to allow or deny the file access.
The 3rd-party application also receives information about the access event,
such as accessed file, type of access, process id, and user id.

Changes: The Linux 2.6 LSM support has been completely rewritten for
proper integration and to support stacking. The "configure" script has
been enhanced to correctly extract Linux kernel configurations. The
FreeBSD extensions now support events for non-existent files, and can post
events based on dup() and dup2() calls. The FreeBSD extensions now also
correctly identify events for symbolic links within observed paths.

[016] - DynChap 0.1
  by wvw (http://freshmeat.net/users/wvw/)
  Sat, Oct 30th 2004 19:40

Security

About: DynChap provides an additional pseudo hardware token based
authentication layer for PoPToP virtual private networks. The
authentication uses the user's mobile phone to generate a hash that needs
to be entered along with the user's password in a custom connection
dialogue. Upon connecting, the VPN verifies the authenticity of the hash.
The hash is generated from a serial (by default 32 printable characters)
stored in the J2ME based mobile phone and the current time; the VPN
server compares this hash against the serial and current time, minus or
plus a small deviation (by default 2 minutes). If the username, password,
and hash match, access is granted and the custom dialer is closed, the
connection can now be controlled like an ordinary VPN connection.

[031] - High Level Assembly Language 1.72
  by linux (http://freshmeat.net/users/brainless/)
  Sat, Oct 30th 2004 00:30

Software Development :: Code Generators

About: The High Level Assembly Language (HLA) was designed to allow
advanced assembly language programmers to write more readable and
powerful assembly language code. It makes it possible to write code by
leveraging knowledge of high level languages like C, C++, Pascal, and
Delphi. HLA compiles into 80x86 assembly language, which is assembled by
MASM, TASM, or Gas.

Changes: Several defects in the HLA parser for FASM code generation were
corrected. Symbol table initialization was modified to properly include
the REAL80 type in the search. Several of the zstring routines in the
Standard Library were modified to correct problems with accessing bytes
beyond the end of a source string when using DWORD operations. Several
code generation bugs were fixed in movdq2q, movss, movapd, movaps, movdqa,
movdqu, movupd, movups, movntdq, movntpd, movntps, cvtpd2pi, movnti, and
most other SSE2 instructions. GLOBAL and GLOBAL2 macros were added to FASM
output to correct duplicate symbol problems.

[038] - Kernel TCP Virtual Server 0.0.16
  by Wensong Zhang (http://freshmeat.net/users/wensongzhang/)
  Sat, Oct 30th 2004 22:43

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Networking
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: Kernel TCP Virtual Server is a Layer-7 switching software in the
Linux Virtual Server framework. It can do application-level load balancing
(such as content-based scheduling) inside the Linux kernel. The reason for
implementing it inside the kernel is to avoid the overhead of context
switching and memory copying between user-space and kernel-space. Although
the its scalability is lower than that of IPVS (IP Virtual Server), it is
flexible, because the content of the request is known before the request
is redirected to the real server.

Changes: This version adds a new HTTP scheduler which sends requests to
the server based on the hash value of matched request, and adds a
--listen option in the tcpvsadm program.

[043] - Marathon GUI Test Tool 0.90
  by Dakshinamurthy K (http://freshmeat.net/users/kdmurthy/)
  Sat, Oct 30th 2004 12:38

Software Development :: Quality Assurance
Software Development :: Testing

About: Marathon is a GUI test tool that allows you to play and record
scripts against a Java Swing UI. It's written in Java, and uses Python as
its scripting language (the emphasis being on an extremely simple,
readable syntax that customers/testers/analysts feel comfortable with).

Changes: Marathon now supports multiple windows open with same title.
Previously, this was only supported only when there was a parent-child
relationship between the windows. A getWindow() call was added to

primary classification is to classify traffic depending on how much a
connection has downloaded. This is a very effective generic way of
improving fairness. No connection can dominate the link. The script is
further optimized for browsing (HTTP traffic). It also includes support
for add-on classifications to netfilter: the ipp2p match and l7-filter
match. This makes it possible to classify certain types of traffic
precisely. A special queue is reserved for p2p traffic.

Changes: Normal traffic wil now never end up in the lowest priority band.
This has to be specially specified by using band8ports, ipp2p, or
l7-filter. A l7_filter bug in the configuration file was also fixed.

[075] - Wi.Ser Beta 0.5.3
  by dvdw (http://freshmeat.net/users/dvdw/)
  Sat, Oct 30th 2004 12:53

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Wi.Ser is a Java/XML server-side GUI-framework which enables an
application to run as either a monolithic Swing app, a client/server Swing
app, or as a Web app without any change. It includes a mixed deployment
mode, which supports one server to serve Swing clients and Web clients at
the same time. The framework uses XML to define an application's GUI. It
provides a common widget-based, object-oriented programming interface for
Web and Swing GUIs, which prevents the developer from struggling with HTML
and HTTP or with the internals of Swing. For Swing client/server
applications the client/server split as well as the client/server
communication is handled transparently by the framework. The project
includes a GUI builder that is based on the framework's functionality
(screenshot, deployed as a Web/HTML application).

Changes: This version corrects the positioner tool in Wi.Ser GUI Builder.
The HTML menu renderer works correctly now, and a quick editor for widget
properties has been added. Cut & paste functionality for widget trees has
been added to the GUI builder.

[078] - zsync 0.0.2
  by Colin Phipps (http://freshmeat.net/users/cph/)
  Sat, Oct 30th 2004 19:35

Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: zsync is a client-side implementation of the rsync algorithm. It
allows updating of files from a remote Web server without requiring a
full download or a special remote server application. It uses a metafile,
which must be created on the server, to determine which parts of a file
the user already has; it then downloads the remaining parts via HTTP. No
special server or Web server module is needed. It can also look inside
gzip files, allowing efficient update transfers even when files are
compressed.

Changes: This version now uses HTTP/1.1 and pipelining. It also cleans up
the network code somewhat, along with some bugfixes and portability
improvements.
