[021] - ddrescue 0.7
by Antonio Diaz Diaz (http://freshmeat.net/users/ant_diaz/)
Tue, Nov 2nd 2004 06:54
System :: Recovery Tools
About: ddrescue copies data from one file or block device (hard disk,
CD-ROM, etc) to another, trying hard to rescue data in case of read
errors. It does not truncate the output file if not asked to. So every
time you run it on the same output file, it tries to fill in the gaps. The
algorithm will: read the non-damaged part of the disk, skipping the damaged
areas; try to read the damaged areas, splitting them into smaller pieces
and reading the non- damaged pieces, until the hardware block size is
reached; try to read the damaged hardware blocks until the specified
number of retries is reached, or until interrupted by the user;
optionally, write a list of bad blocks to a file.
Changes: If a badblocks file is used, ddrescue now can be interrupted at
any time and will be able to resume rescue at the same point later.

[022] - DIET Agents 0.95
by Erwin Bonsma (http://freshmeat.net/users/eriban/)
Tue, Nov 2nd 2004 02:57
Adaptive Technologies
Information Management
Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence
About: DIET Agents is a multi-agent platform in Java. A bottom-up design
is used to ensure that the platform is lightweight, scalable, robust,
adaptive, and extensible. It is especially suitable for rapidly developing
peer-to-peer prototype applications and/or adaptive, distributed
applications that use bottom-up, nature-inspired techniques.
Changes: Support has been added for agent persistence. In particular,
changes in the core layer enable serialization of agents while they are
running. Together with the newly added ability to pause agents by locking
them, this provides basic agent persistence. The ARC layer functionality
has been enhanced to facilitate external control of groups of agents. This
can, for instance, be used in order to save agents to file, as demonstrated
by the new "persistent sorting" demo application. Furthermore, the platform
now supports SSL sockets. Several minor bugs were fixed, mostly related to
remote communication.

[023] - Elektra Project 0.4.5
by Avi Alkalay (http://freshmeat.net/users/aviram/)
Tue, Nov 2nd 2004 05:41
Software Development
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
About: Elektra (formerly Linux Registry) provides a universal and secure
framework to store configuration parameters in a hierarchical key-value
pair mechanism, instead of each program using its own text configuration
files. This allows any program to read and save its configuration with a
consistent API, and allows them to be aware of other applications'
configurations, permitting easy application integration. While
architecturally similar to other OS registries, Elektra does not have most
of the problems found in those implementations.
Changes: A bug in the kdbGetKeyByParentKey() method was fixed. The
behavior of kdbSetKeys() was changed to let developers track errors more
easily. Small fixes in the doxygen documentation were made. The code
examples were improved. The documentation build was made more efficient.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
About: eZ publish is an open source content management system and

general Web development. Its stand-alone libraries can be used for
cross-platform, database independent PHP projects. eZ publish is also well
suited for news publishing, e-commerce (B2B and B2C), portals, and

[027] - File Service Protocol 2.8.1b21 (Beta)
by Sven Hoexter (http://freshmeat.net/users/hoaxter/)
Tue, Nov 2nd 2004 17:11
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
About: FSP is a UDP-based protocol for transferring files. It has many
benefits over FTP, mainly for running anonymous archives. It is usable on
lines with high packet loss ratio (70% WiFi), can go behind firewalls and
unoticed by port scans (because of UDP), does not overload networks when
hosting ISOs or movies, share files on modem lines without eating all of
the bandwidth, and keeps lamers away from your site (they don't know how
to get to it). This project is active continuation of the FSP code base
(abandoned for the last 5 years).
Changes: A rename command, fmvcmd, has been added to the client tools. The
use of password protection is possible again. Various updates have been
made to the PROTOCOL file.

About: Freelords is a rewrite of the well-known Warlords II. It mainly
resembles Warlords, but also extends the game, e.g. units have hit points
and the save, and configuration files have an easy-to-read XML format.
Changes: Large user interface enhancements (keyboard usage, more buttons,
and deselecting stacks is possible). Several grave bugs have been fixed.
Items and medals of honour have been implemented. The AI has been

[030] - FsPHPGallery 1.2
by Chris Howells (http://freshmeat.net/users/chowells/)
Tue, Nov 2nd 2004 03:11
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
About: FsPHPGallery is a filesystem-based image gallery. Instead of
requiring a vast number of dependencies (e.g., MySQL and ImageMagick) and
requiring every single image to be imported into a specific gallery,
FsPHPGallery simply reads the filesystem directly and generates its
galleries based on this. It automatically generates thumbnail- and other
-sized images as required on the fly, and these are cached to speed up
delivery the next time that they are requested. JPEG and PNG images are
supported, and other image types could be supported if there was demand.
FsPHPGallery is very easy to set up, with changes needed to only one or
two configuration options.
Changes: The session handling stuff was removed because it didn't work
well. A potential security fix was made for the path sanitization code.
The size to which the images can be resized was limited to prevent
potential DOS attacks against the server. The header and footer stuff were
split up into header.inc and footer.inc to reduce the size of index.php
slightly. The gallery browser and the viewer were split from index.php,
and the viewer was put into view.php.

Tue, Nov 2nd 2004 13:42
Software Development :: Pre-processors
About: Logtalk is an open source object-oriented extension to the Prolog
programming language. Integrating logic programming with object-oriented
and event-driven programming, it is compatible with most Prolog compilers.
It supports both prototypes and classes. In addition, it supports
component-based programming through category-based composition.
Changes: A new compiler flag, "events", can be used to switch off
event-driven programming support when not needed on a per-object basis,
improving message sending performance. The runtime creation of dynamic
objects, protocols, and categories has been optimized. The error handling
code of the built-in predicates create_object/4, create_protocol/3, and
create_category/4 has been updated to throw an instantiation error when
called with a non-instantiated argument. The benchmarks example has been

by Peter Bienstman (http://freshmeat.net/users/pbienst/)
Tue, Nov 2nd 2004 05:30
Education
Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)
About: MemAid is like a traditional flashcard program to help you memorize
question/answer pairs, but with an important twist: it uses a neural
network to schedule the best time for an item to come up for review.
Difficult items that you tend to forget quickly will be scheduled more
often, while MemAid won't waste your time on things you remember well.
This means that your learning process becomes much more efficient, because
the neural network gradually adapts to your personal memory model.
Changes: Compatibility was improved when importing from other MemAid
versions. The SuperKaramba widget was fixed to work with recent versions
of KDE and SuperKaramba. Unicode characters are still a problem, which is
probably a bug in SuperKaramba. An option to add a vice versa question was
added. Scheduling of inverse questions was improved. Tooltips for grades
were added. A digest crash for a Unicode question was fixed.

Information Management :: Workflow Frameworks
About: OpenWFE is a workflow engine. It is written in Java and is robust,
extensible, and scalable. An access library for Python is available,
making it easy to write custom interfaces or agents (automatic
participants) for a workflow-enabled system.
Changes: The development done on this release comprises different efforts.
The first of them focused on the process definitions, where the concept of
variable substitution was generalized and now allows nested references. A
command-line tool named "validate-flow.sh" has been created for early
validation of a flow definition, to eliminate errors that were until now
only detected at runtime. The last effort was put into making sure that
droflo was usable in edit mode also when not running as a root Web
application.

About: POP 3 client is a PHP class that allows you to access mail boxes
using the POP3 protocol. It can access servers using normal and APOP login
methods, authentication mechanisms via PHP SASL library such as PLAIN,
LOGIN, CRAM-MD5, NTLM (Windows or Linux/Unix via Samba), calculation of
mailbox statistics, listing of message sizes and identifier numbers,
retrieval of messages separating the headers from the body, limits on the
number of message lines that may be retrieved at once, marking messages to
be deleted, and issuing of the protocol NOOP command to avoid connection
shutdown while in an idle state.
Changes: A problem with the addition of whitespace when requesting the
list of messages, which was making the LIST and UIDL commands fail with

Communications :: Email :: Filters
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: POP3
Internet :: Proxy Servers
About: Pop 3 scan is a full transparent proxy server for POP3 clients. It
runs on a Linux box with iptables (for port redirection). It can be used
to provide POP3 email scanning from the Internet to any internal network,
and is ideal for helping to protect your "Other OS" LAN from harm,
especially when used in conjunction with a firewall and other Internet
proxy servers. It is designed to enable scanning of incoming email
messages for viruses, worms, trojans, spam, and harmful attachments.
Because viewing HTML email can enable a spammer to validate an email
address (via Web bugs), it can also provide HTML stripping.
Changes: This version added a "broken" option that causes the proxy to
send timeout "lines" instead "characters", which is required for clients
such as Outlook and Outlook Express clients. A cleanup function for
erasing p3scan/children/* directories after errors was included, along
with "graceful death" when a client terminates the connection while a
message is still being processed.

[085] - Smarty PHP template engine 2.6.6
by emrox (http://freshmeat.net/users/emrox/)
Tue, Nov 2nd 2004 03:29
Software Development
About: Smarty is a template engine for PHP. Many other template engines
for PHP provide basic variable substitution and dynamic block
functionality. Smarty takes a step further to be a "smart" template
engine, adding features such as configuration files, template functions,
and variable modifiers, and making all of this functionality as easy as
possible to use for both programmers and template designers. Smarty also
converts the templates into PHP scripts, eliminating the need to parse the
templates on every invocation. This makes Smarty extremely scalable and
managable for large application needs.

About: Gallery is a slick Web-based photo album written using PHP. It is

Multimedia :: Graphics
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: Vector Visuals provides an easy-to-use, object-based API for
creating and manipulating Java2D-rendered shapes and images. It features
object embedding, dynamic connectors, and multithreaded task support.
Changes: This release features a number of small improvements, including
smoother animation and a better connector interface. The most significant
change, however, is "under the hood" in the form of a complete conversion
to the new language features of Java 5.0.

[097] - Webcockpit 1.3.0
by Peter Klauser (http://freshmeat.net/users/pjk/)

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization
About: Webcockpit is a Web application generator for reporting and
monitoring applications. It generates complete JSP-based Web applications
which contain charts and tables whose contents are retrieved using
database queries. The charts and tables can be configured to link to each
other, enabling master detail-like drill-down. You can provide your own
HTML or JSP template files which are mixed with the generated JSP to
provide a final Web application.
Changes: A major enhancement has been made to webcockpit to allow for
creating charts with a customized 'look and feel'. All aspects of chart
coloring, fonts, and line styles have been made easily customizable. This
is a significant improvement to standard Cewolf chart images. Grid lines
can be switched on or off for xy charts. HTML tables can be configured to
have alternating styles for odd and even rows for easier readability.

[098] - Wi.Ser Beta 0.5.4
by dvdw (http://freshmeat.net/users/dvdw/)
Tue, Nov 2nd 2004 03:13
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: Wi.Ser is a Java/XML server-side GUI-framework which enables an
application to run as either a monolithic Swing app, a client/server Swing
app, or as a Web app without any change. It includes a mixed deployment
mode, which supports one server to serve Swing clients and Web clients at
the same time. The framework uses XML to define an application's GUI. It
provides a common widget-based, object-oriented programming interface for
Web and Swing GUIs, which prevents the developer from struggling with HTML
and HTTP or with the internals of Swing. For Swing client/server
applications the client/server split as well as the client/server
communication is handled transparently by the framework. The project
includes a GUI builder that is based on the framework's functionality
(screenshot, deployed as a Web/HTML application).
Changes: Menus and buttons of the GUI builder are now context sensitive.
The HTML menu automatically calculates the width of the menu, and the XML
source editor now works correctly.
