  by Jay Beale (http://freshmeat.net/users/armitage/)
  Thu, Nov 4th 2004 01:29

Security

About: Bastille Linux aims to be the most comprehensive, flexible, and
educational Security Hardening Program for Red Hat, Mandrake, and Debian
Linux, as well as HP-UX and Mac OS X. Virtually every task it performs is
optional, providing immense flexibility. It educates the installing admin
regarding the topic at hand before asking any question. The interactive
nature allows the program to be more thorough when securing, while the
educational component produces an admin who is less likely to compromise
the increased security.

  by Nathan Angelacos (http://freshmeat.net/users/nangel/)
  Thu, Nov 4th 2004 10:21

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers
Software Development :: Interpreters

About: Haserl is a small CGI wrapper that lets shell scripts be directly
embedded into HTML documents. It exposes form elements from POST or GET
requests as environment variables, and anything inside tags is run as a
shell script. It is intended for environments where something like PHP is
too big, and compiles to less than 20 KB.

Changes: This release starts a subshell on startup, and all code is run in
this single subshell. Environment variables now survive past a code-block.
If installed suid, it will drop its permissions to that of the script
owner/group (like Apache's suexec). File uploads are now disabled by
default; a command line option allows them to be enabled on a
script-by-script basis.

[040] - log4j 1.2.9
  by Ceki Gulcu (http://freshmeat.net/users/cgu/)
  Thu, Nov 4th 2004 04:43

Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
System :: Logging

About: Log4j is a logging package written in Java. Log4j allows you to log
to a file, a java.io.Writer, a remote server, or a syslog daemon. The
package is designed so that log statements can remain in shipped code
without incurring a high performance cost. One distinctive feature of
log4j is the notion of hierarchical loggers. Using hierarchical loggers,
it is possible to select (at runtime) which log statements are output at
arbitrary granularity. Users can choose to implement their own log formats
and output strategies.

Changes: This version is identical to version 1.2.8, except that several
key methods have been deprecated in preparation for version 1.3.0, the
next major release of log4j. These changes are intended to enforce the
rule that client code should never refer to the Category class directly,
but use the Logger class instead. Similarly, client code should not refer
to the Priority class but to the Level class instead.

  Thu, Nov 4th 2004 19:24

Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: MUSCLE (Multi User Server Client Linking Environment) is an N-way
messaging server and networking API. It is portable to any OS with a POSIX
TCP sockets API and a modern C++ compiler. It lets programs communicate
over a network via streams of serialized Message objects (which are very
similar to BeOS's BMessages). The included server program ("muscled") lets
its clients message each other and store information in its server-side
hierarchical database. The database supports flexible queries via
hierarchical wildcarding, and "live" updates via a subscription mechanism.
It may also be customized via subclassing if application-specific
server-side logic is needed.

Changes: This version adds a CPULoadMeter multi-platform load- metering
class, a Win32FileHandleDataIO class, a deadlock- detector utility
program, a little TCP listener program, and some tweaks so that the code
runs correctly on 64-bit systems. It also tweaks the Qt support code so
that it compiles correctly under older versions of Qt.

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)

About: Nail is a mail user agent derived from Berkeley Mail. It provides
the functionality of the System V and POSIX mailx commands. Additional
features include support for MIME, IMAP (including caching and
disconnected use), POP3, SMTP, S/MIME, international character sets,
maildir folders, message threading, powerful search methods, scoring, and
a Bayesian junk mail filter. Nail can be used as a mail batch language in
nearly the same way as it is used interactively. It can thus act as a
mailbox filter, can fetch mail from remote accounts, and can send files as
attachments.

Changes: The MIME message decoding functions have been rewritten, leading
to improvements for decryption, handling of "multipart/alternative"
messages, the ~F and ~M escapes, and the "edit" and "visual" commands. A
deadlock that occurred when some thousand messages were deleted on an IMAP
server at once has been resolved. A "Z" command was introduced for more
convenient scrolling of the header summary when reading mailing lists. The
new "show" command displays the raw message text without any MIME decoding.

components much easier to use. This library differs from other Swing
libraries in that it displays any set of pre-existing objects or
JavaBeans, using the Java class code to determine information such as
attribute names and writeability. It uses standard Java features, such as
JavaBean introspection. The UIs that are produced have all the
configurability that programmers need, such as read-only or writeable
columns, support for custom renderers, column ordering, etc.

Changes: License headers were added to each file and the demo application
was condensed down into one frame.

About: OneFinger is a general-purpose GUI for composing CLI commands with
the mouse. Although entirely graphical, it does not attempt to hide the
underlying CLI language. It increases your productivity over classical
hand-typing by caching commands typed into terminals, which tend to be
highly repetitive. Repeated commands can be selected from a list,
ordered by last usage time. It includes an integrated file browser that
helps you insert filenames without typing them. and allows you to see
only those programs that make sense with a given file.

Changes: This release introduced a new "panels containing files from
multiple locations" interaction philosophy.

editions. There are several types of users: admins, moderators, and simple
users. Moderators and admins can edit ACLs to reduce the number of people
allowed to modify a particular page. They can remove comments or
particular version of the content. Admins can edit/delete users, create
groups, edit them, set global rights (anonymous post, anonymous comments,
etc.), change themes, etc.

Changes: This version features bugfixes, XHTML validity improvements (now
fully compliant), image handling, enhancements to the default theme along
with some IE fixes, RSS feeds, a plugin architecture, a UTF-8 conversion

About: wxGuide is a collection of guidelines for building cross-platform
applications with a well-designed, consistent look and feel. It gives
ideas and advice on how an application and its GUI could and should be
written. Development with these guidelines gives the GUI of an application
a standard set of base functionality. wxGuide also provides sample code for
each guideline written in C++ using the wxWidgets (formerly wxWindows)
framework. For a seasoned developer it shouldn't be difficult to adapt
these guidelines to other languages or frameworks. The Demo sample, which
applies all these guidelines, can even be taken as a starting base for
your own project to speed up your software development cycle. The
screenshot shows two windows of a single instance of the Demo sample.

Changes: Most important are the changes in the menu to make applications
more Mac OS compliant. A paragraph has been added about crash stack
printing and the necessary code (only for Linux and Windows). Included in
this release is the sample wxGuide-Demo 1.2.0.

Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: xmlif is a tool that interprets certain processing instructions in
XML documents to support conditional emission of specified sections of the
document. It is intended to be used as a stage in an XML tool-chain. Note
that this tool is included in Tim Waugh's xmlto(1) package.

Changes: The processing instruction xmlif uses had to be changed because
of a previously unexpected land mine in the XML standard.
