by Emil Brink (http://freshmeat.net/users/emilbrink/)
Sun, Nov 7th 2004 05:53
Desktop Environment :: File Managers
About: gentoo is a file manager written in C. It uses the GTK+ toolkit,
and the two-pane concept, somewhat inspired by DOpus. gentoo strives to be
very configurable, and also to let you do all configuration from a GUI

gentoo determines how to display files in its listings, and also how to act
on them. The package includes a set of over 120 unique handcrafted icons,
for many different types of files.
Changes: A problem in GetSize that caused it to abort with false error
message was fixed. The Polish translation was updated. Later versions of
autoconf and automake were adopted, hopefully fixing an installation
issue.

Software Development :: Libraries
Text Processing
About: GNU Libidn is an implementation of the Stringprep, Punycode, and
IDNA specifications defined by the IETF Internationalized Domain Names
(IDN) working group. It is used to prepare internationalized strings (such
as domain name labels, usernames, and passwords) in order to increase the
likelihood that string input and string comparison work in ways that make
sense for typical users throughout the world. The library contains a
generic Stringprep implementation that does Unicode 3.2 NFKC
normalization, mapping and prohibition of characters, and bidirectional
character handling. Profiles for iSCSI, Kerberos 5, Nameprep, SASL, and
XMPP are included. Punycode and ASCII Compatible Encoding (ACE) via IDNA
are supported.
Changes: The reference API manual is now available in DevHelp format.

Internet
Security
About: GNU SASL is an implementation of the Simple Authentication and
Security Layer framework and a few common SASL mechanisms. SASL is used
by network servers such as IMAP and SMTP to request authentication from
clients, and in clients to authenticate against servers. The library
includes support for the SASL framework (with authentication functions
and application data privacy and integrity functions) and at least
partial support for the CRAM-MD5, EXTERNAL, GSSAPI, ANONYMOUS, PLAIN,
SECURID, DIGEST-MD5, LOGIN, NTLM, and KERBEROS_V5 mechanisms.
Changes: This release adds new examples for the new API. There are
documentation improvements, e.g. the API manual in DevHelp format. gnulib
files are updated. More self tests. Translation fixes. The EXTERNAL
mechanism now support authorization identities. A major internal overhaul
of the library to remove all fixed size buffers in the API, and to
simplify the callback interface. An update of the generic crypto layer. It
is now possible to add a new SASL mechanism during run-time. A few memory
leaks are fixed. Libtool's -export-symbols-regex is now used to only
export official APIs.

by Martin Shepherd (http://freshmeat.net/users/mshepherd/)
Sun, Nov 7th 2004 21:36
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: User Interfaces
System :: Shells
About: The Tecla library provides programs with interactive command line
editing facilities, similar to those of the Unix tcsh shell. It supports
recall and editing of previously entered command lines, TAB completion of
file names and application specific tokens, and in-line wild-card
expansion of filenames. The optionally reentrant modules which perform TAB
completion and wild-card expansion are also available separately for
general use. The library is smaller, more modular, makes more efficient
use of the heap, and has a less restrictive license than GNU readline.
Changes: This release fixes a few bugs, remedies a configuration problem
under Mac OS X, adds configuration support for IRIX, and adds a few minor
features. gl_get_line can now be forced to treat a terminal as a
non-interactive stream, by setting the TERM environment variable to the
word "dumb". The line-buffer returned by one call to gl_get_line can now
be passed as the initial input line of the next call for further editing.
There is a documented way for file descriptor and inactivity timeout
callbacks to safely suspend line editing, in case they need to interact
with the terminal.

contains the libraries, net support, and scanimage. The X frontends
xscanimage and xcam can be found in sane-frontends.
Changes: A new backend called "niash" has been integrated, which supports
the Hewlett-Packard ScanJet 3300c, 3400c, 4300c, and the Agfa SnapScan
Touch. A lot of backends have been updated. Many portability fixes
(especially for Mac OS X, NetBSD, OS/2, and 64-bit platforms) have been
applied. sane-find-scanner detects more chipsets now. A Finnish
translation has been added, and other translations have been updated.
Several saned fixes have been applied.

[066] - SpamProbe 1.1x2 (Experimental)
by Brian Burton (http://freshmeat.net/users/bburton/)
Sun, Nov 7th 2004 17:18
Communications :: Email :: Filters
About: SpamProbe is a spam detection program that uses a Bayesian analysis
of the frequencies of terms used in the email. Because it filters email
based on content rather than on general rules, it easily adapts itself to
the types of email that each individual user normally receives.
Changes: This release replaces the old parser with the newer, faster one.
Extensive refactoring has been done to improve maintainability. All of the
old functionality is now in place except for MBX file support. Header
processing has been improved.

[067] - spamresponder 0.4
by Stephan Schmieder (http://freshmeat.net/users/ssc_/)
Sun, Nov 7th 2004 06:13
Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Filters
Internet
About: Spamresponder is a very simple and radical spam filter. It will go
through all mail messages in /var/mail/$USER, looking for specific
"trusted" strings in the header and body parts of the mail. It will delete
and send an automatic reply to messages which have no "trusted" strings
inside them. Those replies will include one of the "trusted" strings, so
the recipient just needs to reply to this confirmation message. The
MailFrom-address of an email containing a trusted string becomes a trusted
string itself.
Changes: This version includes support for automatic whitelisting. It will
delete and send an automatic reply to messages which have no "trusted"
strings inside them. Those replies will include one of the "trusted"
strings, so the recipient just needs to reply to the automatically sent
message. The MailFrom-address of an email containing a trusted string
becomes a trusted string itself.

[070] - Units of measurement for Ada 1.6
by Dmitry Kazakov (http://freshmeat.net/users/kazakov/)
Sun, Nov 7th 2004 06:08
Scientific/Engineering
About: The library provides an implementation of dimensioned values for
Ada. Unit checks are made at run-time, if not optimized out by the
compiler. SI and irregular measurement units are supported. Shifted units
like degrees Celsius are supported too. Conversions from and back to
strings are provided for all various irregular units.
Changes: A bug was fixed in unit input, so the conflict between the SI
prefix and unit name in cases of P(petto) vs. Pa is now correctly
resolved. A platform-independent units converter sample for GTK was added.

[075] - zsync 0.0.6
by Colin Phipps (http://freshmeat.net/users/cph/)
Sun, Nov 7th 2004 21:32
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: zsync is a client-side implementation of the rsync algorithm. It
allows updating of files from a remote Web server without requiring a
full download or a special remote server application. It uses a metafile,
which must be created on the server, to determine which parts of a file
the user already has; it then downloads the remaining parts via HTTP. No
special server or Web server module is needed. It can also look inside
gzip files, allowing efficient update transfers even when files are
compressed.
Changes: Cleanup of code and documentation.
