[001] - 3rd Edition Dungeons & Dragons Character Generator 2.5
by Slicer (http://freshmeat.net/users/slicer/)
Mon, Nov 8th 2004 00:06
Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing
About: 3rd Edition Dungeons and Dragons Character Generator is an
HTML/JavaScript Web page that allows the user to quickly and easily create
new Dungeons and Dragons characters. The characters can be of any of the
eleven classes, any of the playable races, and may start at any level from
1 to 220. Generation requires some simple input, after which the character
is displayed on a basic character sheet. It allows you to select your
starting stats, add ability points, and pick skills, equipment, feats, and
spells. It runs on most operating systems with most modern browsers.
Changes: This release adds the ability to "level up" a pre-existing
character. The generator now allows you to pick a class in which to gain
a level, then calculates your new hit points, skill points, spells, feat
points, etc for you. There have been minor code cleanup and bugfixes
also.

by PlanetMan (http://freshmeat.net/users/PlanetMan/)
Mon, Nov 8th 2004 00:07
Database :: Front-Ends
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
About: AppWrap is a content management system for enterprises. It is built
on a template engine that includes a framework for building SQL tables and
allowing users to populate and maintain these tables. Reports using data
from these tables can be easily created using another template. It is
ideal for quickly Webifying Excel and Word files shared among workgroups
and rapidly providing advanced data management and presentation
capabilities. It is intended for managing mildly dynamic data without the
labor of hand-coding and managing multiple CGI forms and templates, or the
expense of CRM systems.
Changes: The table namespace was cleaned up to reduce potential conflicts
with private tables, code was refactored in support of the namespace
cleanup, "people" and "contactinfo" tables were added for better support
in enterprise environments, and a bug in the history writing function was
squashed.

by imipak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imipak/)
Mon, Nov 8th 2004 17:38
About: BLAST is a set of similarity search programs designed to explore
all of the available sequence databases regardless of whether the query is
protein or DNA. It uses a heuristic algorithm which seeks local as opposed
to global alignments, and is therefore able to detect relationships among
sequences which share only isolated regions of similarity. It can be run
locally as a full executable, and can be used to run BLAST searches
against private, local databases, or downloaded copies of the NCBI
databases. It runs on Mac OS, Win32, LINUX, Solaris, IBM AIX, SGI, Compaq
OSF, and HP- UX systems.
Changes: Bugfixes to threading, error handling, masking of translated
queries, and sorting/inclusion. Various speedups and code cleanups. A new
modular BLAST engine. An anonymous CVS repository has been added.

About: Bid Monkey is a command line and GUI tool that automatically bids
on eBay auctions at the last possible moment ("sniping"). It will run in
the foreground or background, and only requires basic information from the
user, such as username, password, item number, and the maximum bid to
place. Among its more unique features, Bid Monkey abstracts the URL scheme
and regular expressions into a separate "patterns" database, allowing for
easy Web-based updates.
Changes: eBay started requiring SSL logins and true session tracking. This
release swaps custom HTML routines with cURL to handle those changes.

[018] - Conary 0.11.0
by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
Mon, Nov 8th 2004 11:18
Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup
About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather then having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.
Changes: The mechanism for file identification has been reworked to better
support flavors. It is now possible to populate and view metadata from the
commandline. Trove requirements are now functional. There have been small
bugfixes.

Changes: This release features universal argument support, the
switch-to-buffer defaults to the last visited buffer, the kill- buffer
prompts for a buffer, there is improved window splitting, C-RET now opens
the numbered link in new buffer, and there were improvements to save-link.

[022] - darcs 1.0.0
by Mark Stosberg (http://freshmeat.net/users/markjugg/)
Mon, Nov 8th 2004 17:41
Software Development :: Version Control
About: Darcs is an advanced revision control system along the lines of CVS
or arch. It has two particularly distinctive features which differ from
other revision control systems: each copy of the source is a fully
functional branch, and underlying it is a consistent and powerful theory
of patches. In spite of its power, darcs is simple to use, in part because
of the symmetry that is restored by making each copy of the repository a
branch.
Changes: Little has changed since the last release candidate. The big news
is that it is being declared stable now.

Mon, Nov 8th 2004 17:57
Communications :: Email
About: Mail Avenger is a highly-configurable, MTA-independent SMTP
server. It allows you to reject spam during mail transactions, before
spooling messages in your local mail queue. You can specify site-wide
default policies for filtering mail, but individual users can also craft
their own policies by creating avenger scripts in their home directories.
It includes many features not supported by other SMTP servers, including
mail-bomb protection, integration with kernel firewalls, TCP SYN
fingerprint and network route recording, SMTP-level analysis of client
implementations, SMTP callbacks to verify sender addresses, per-user mail
scripts that run during SMTP transactions, virtual domain to user mapping
for the purposes of filtering, SPF (sender policy framework), dynamic SPF
query construction in mail filter scripts, support for easily issuing
multiple concurrent, asynchronous DNS and SPF queries from filter
scripts, and the ability to run spam filters such as spamassassin on
message bodies before replying to SMTP DATA commands.
Changes: Many new utilities, including smtpdcheck (for secondary MX
servers to make sure the primary is really down), dotlock and deliver (for
manipulating mailspool files), and avenger.local, an experimental local
delivery agent with a qmail-like approach for sorting mail to different
extension addresses. A new AllowPercent option (off by default) makes it
harder accidentally to misconfigure the system to act as an open mail
relay.

[063] - MoSSHe 1.2.1
by Volker Tanger (http://freshmeat.net/users/vtanger/)
Mon, Nov 8th 2004 02:08
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: MoSSHe (MOnitoring with SSH Environment) is a simple, lightweight
(both in size and system requirements) server monitoring package designed
for secure and in-depth monitoring of a number of typical Internet
systems. It was developed to keep the impact on network and performance
low, and to use a safe, encrypted connection for in-depth inspection of
the system checked. It is not possible to remotely run (more or less
arbitrary) commands via the monitoring system, nor is unsafe cleartext
SNMP messaging necessary (yet possible). A read-only Web interface makes
monitoring and status checks simple (and safe) for admins and helpdesk.
Checking scripts for remote and local systems (disk space, load,
processes, users), common services (SMTP, POP3, HTTP) and SNMP queries are
included.
Changes: This version fixes an HTTP check which did not always notice a
server that had gone completely, and adds "UNDEF" alerting to alerts and
the Web interface.

About: mozCC is an extension for browsers which are based on Mozilla Gecko
(Mozilla Suite, Mozilla Firefox/Firebird, and Netscape) which provides an
easy way to view Creative Commons license metadata embedded in Web pages.
mozCC displays license information about the current page in the status
bar using the Creative Commons' license attribute icons. It also provides
a button on the toolbar which displays the embedded license's RDF in more
detail.
Changes: This release fixes bugs related to license detection. In previous
releases, pages which specified valid RDF that did not contain a License
element were not properly marked as licensed. This has been corrected. The
external JsLib dependency has been removed.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Perl Modules
About: Net::Whois::RIPE is an object-oriented Perl module that provides
methods to query, retrieve, and update RIPE-157 formatted objects from
whois servers that support this format. In particular, both the Asian and
European Internet Registries (whois.ripe.net and whois.apnic.net) support
this format.
Changes: Two changes were made in this release. The _connect method call
was moved out of ->new() because it was already being called in other
methods and was problematic for testing. The test cases were revised to
handle the possibility that there is no local whois server to test
against. localhost will be tried by default, but you can now change that
in the test.cfg file.

Communications
Desktop Environment
Software Development
About: NoMachine NX is a fast terminal server system based on the X11
protocol. In addition, NX also translates and embeds the MS Windows
Terminal Server and VNC protocols into X/NX. NX is an order of magnitude
faster than VNC or X11 and can run on bandwidth as narrow as 10 kBit/sec.
By embedding RDP and RFB, it enables users to compress and accelerate
remote Windows and VNC sessions. NX lets you work fluently even across
slow links like modems. The NX project provides a suite of libraries and
X11 proxying agents implementing efficient compression and optimized
transport of X11, SMB, IPP, HTTP, and arbitrary protocols like audio over
the Internet.
Changes: This version introduces many major features, among them a
completely rewritten handling of SSH tunneling, better security, support
for local printers, persistence of sessions, and improved international
keyboard support. In addition, new distributions have been added to the
list of supported platforms, such as Solaris 8 and 10, Red Hat Enterprise
Linux, Mandrake 10.1, and SuSE 9.1. Multiple enhancements and various
bugfixes are included.

[076] - PFconf 0.8.0
by Volker Tanger (http://freshmeat.net/users/vtanger/)
Mon, Nov 8th 2004 18:17
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: Most ACLs (packet filters) don't work with "group" objects where
one can list tables of IP addresses and networks for which one rule is
applied. OpenBSD's "pf" is the notable exception to this rule. So if you
have three email servers and 5 protocols (SMTP, POP3, POP3s, IMAP, and
IMAPS) you will need to write 15 rules instead of one, and not forget a
single permutation. With PFconf you only need one rule, and the script
will take care of the necessary permutations. These scripts are designed
to be fairly simple, leave way room for comments (who ordered that, why is
this rule here, etc.), and the usual quartet: small, efficient, portable,
and easy to use.

[092] - RLog 1.3.5
by Valient Gough (http://freshmeat.net/users/vgough/)
Mon, Nov 8th 2004 17:54
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Logging
About: RLog provides a flexible message logging facility for C++ programs
and libraries. It is subscription based, meaning you can subscribe to
messages of your choice in an number of ways: by hierarchical channel
name (e.g. "debug", "debug/ special", "error", etc.), or filename,
component name, etc. Log messages are individually enabled. It is meant
to be fast enough to leave in production code - even where it may be
called many times, as both the GCC and Intel compilers reduce the logging
overhead a few clock cycles if they are dormant (with no subscribers).
Other add-on components can extend subscriptions to external programs,
allowing you to enable and collect debugging messages remotely.
Changes: The autoconf build has been updated to work with newer versions
of the automake tools (needed for the SuSE 9.2 build). There are changes
to support compilers that lack any form of variadic macros in C++ (based
on changes to support Visual C++).

[099] - SQL Uniform 1.3.0
by SQL Uniform Software Team (http://freshmeat.net/users/sqluniform/)
Mon, Nov 8th 2004 02:02
Database :: Front-Ends
About: SQL Uniform is a general interface and helper application for
relational databases of various types. It can be used for queries,
maintenance, data comparison, exporting, and conversion. It supports ODBC
and JDBC databases. It has been tested on the following databases:
Access, Adabas D, DaffodilDB, dBASE, Excel, HSQL, IBM DB2, Interbase
(Firebird), JDataStore, Linter (Relex), McKOI, Mimer, MSSQL, MySQL,
Openlink Virtuoso, Oracle, Paradox, Pervasive (Btrive), Pointbase,
PostgreSQL, Quadcap QED, Solid, SQLITE, Sybase, ThinkSQL, and Yard.
Changes: Selected tables structure and data export is now possible with
any second database server or in any text file. SQL statements containing
text files can now be completed, and imported into the given database.
Data compare can be influenced through expressions. There is connection
help to the DaffodilDB server. It is now also possible to search in
result amount word part, start of word, end of word, in complete word,
start of line, end of line, and exact value. Some minor bugfixes,
modifications, and features were added.

[100] - SQLgrey 1.2.0
by Lionel Bouton (http://freshmeat.net/users/GyverLB/)
Mon, Nov 8th 2004 17:55
Communications :: Email :: Filters
About: SQLgrey is a Postfix greylisting policy service with auto-
whitelisting and an SQL database as storage backend. It is based on
postgrey, refining auto-whitelisting and storing whitelists and
connection attempts in a database. Its goal is reducing the amount of spam
reaching user mailboxes.
Changes: Previous releases were vulnerable to SQL code injection, and a
DoS attack (no mail delivery) may have been possible. Proper quoting of
the strings Postfix hands to SQLgrey now prevents this. The grey-listing
process is now more tolerant of a database restart, and SQL errors are
properly reported via syslog. Updated VERP heuristics from postgrey have
been integrated.

[101] - SquidClamAV Redirector 1.6
by Michael Lang (http://freshmeat.net/users/nuddelaug/)
Mon, Nov 8th 2004 21:46
Internet :: Proxy Servers
About: SquidClamAV Redirector is a Squid helper script which adds virus
scanning for defined filename extensions. It has been tested with Python,
pyclamav, ClamAV, and Squid. Squid has to be configured to use
"redirect_program" and to either deny access to a URL defined in the SCAVR
configuration or to redirect to a remote Site which displays an error (and
some information). SCAVR handles the request as given from Squid,
downloads the URL, and scans it for known viruses. It rewrites the URL
from Squid to a blocked URL or an information page with information about
the scanning results.
Changes: This release fixed a problem where urllib requests were performed
twice. Redirect handling was implemented along with a MIMEType feature,
which is used if Content-Length is unknown.

Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers
About: Wodan is an Apache module for reverse proxying and caching of

no-caching options.
Changes: This release can cache 404 results from the backends, enabling
the administrator to significantly lower the load on the backend. Two
major bugs have been fixed. It no longer stops Apache's KeepAliveTimeout
