Computer Cloning with Partition Image
by Vlad Setchin (mailto:v_setchin

Section: Tutorials
Sat, Nov 13th 2004 00:00
When you have over a hundred computers to install, you really start to
scratch your head and think that it would be nice not to do the same
installation a hundred times. When I faced this problem, I looked at
computer cloning as a solution. I did not want to spend big bucks on
commercial software like Norton Ghost. I know that some people might be
skeptical about using Open Source software, but I gave partimage a try and
found it to work very nicely.

Artistic Software
Communications
Communications :: BBS
About: alph implements and analyzes historical and traditional ciphers and
codes, such as polyalphabetic, susbstitutional, and mixed employing
human-reconstructable algorithms. It provides a pipe filter interface in
order to encrypt and decrypt block text to acheive transparency. The
program is meant to be used in conjunction with external programs that
transfer data, resulting in transparent encryption or decryption of
information. The program can thus be used as a mail filter, IRC filter, IM
filter, and so on.
Changes: This release removes the libpopt dependency and implements its
own command line options handling.

[002] - Astaro Security Linux 5.027 (Stable 5.x)
by astaro (http://freshmeat.net/users/astaro/)
Sat, Nov 13th 2004 00:26
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: Astaro Security Linux is an all-in-one network security gateway
that includes a firewall, intrusion protection, virus protection, spam
protection, URL filtering, and a VPN gateway. Features include stateful
packet inspection, deep packet filtering, application-level intrusion
detection, content filtering, virus detection for email traffic (SMTP and
POP3) and Web traffic (HTTP), whitelists and blacklists, IPSec and PPTP
VPN tunneling, spam blocking, logging and reporting. The software is built
on an embedded, especially hardened Linux distribution. The WebAdmin tool
and Up2Date service make it easy to install, manage, and update all six
security applications.
Changes: This Up2Date added a new kernel with a lot of bugfixes and extra
e100/e1000 drivers with NAPI support. It fixed problems with dynamic
packet filter rules not working correctly, with the IP address of HA
slaves always being 0.0.0.0, and with some Web sites not being accessible
over PPTP. Issues with Spam Score being visible in the body of an email
and the PPTP server giving out version information were fixed.

[005] - Cornfed SIP User Agent 0.4.9
by FWMiller (http://freshmeat.net/users/fwmiller/)
Sat, Nov 13th 2004 12:18
Communications :: Internet Phone
Communications :: Telephony
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Speech
About: The Cornfed SIP User Agent is a Session Initiation Protocol
(SIP)-based Softphone for your x86 Linux systems. It allows you to make
Internet phone calls using an Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA) or
Open Sound System (OSS) sound card with speakers and microphone as your
telephone handset.
Changes: A CLI argument was added to all the specifications of the local
IP address to be used by the client. The polling loop was replaced with
use of select() calls on various file descriptors. This change appears to
help with quality of sound playback. The ability to filter logging based
on level was added (see the log command in CLI for details). Additional
RTP statistics tracking was added to the CLI. Bugs where ACKs and CSeq
increments were not handled correctly when authentication is required was
fixed.

[006] - dbacl 1.9
by Laird Breyer (http://freshmeat.net/users/garch1/)
Sat, Nov 13th 2004 00:27
Communications :: Email :: Filters
Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence
Text Processing :: Filters
About: dbacl is a digramic Bayesian text classifier. Given some text, it
calculates the posterior probabilities that the input resembles one of any
number of previously learned document collections. It can be used to sort
incoming email into arbitrary categories such as spam, work, and play, or
simply to distinguish an English text from a French text. It fully
supports international character sets, and uses sophisticated statistical
models based on the Maximum Entropy Principle.
Changes: This release added a new MAP confidence score (-U, to complement
the -X switch), some new scoring types in mailinspect, and a new parsing
switch for trace headers in email (-T email:theaders). Category learning
now accepts directory names as well as file names, and preliminary work on
a new header mining tool (hmine) was performed. Category files are now
written in 'portable' format by default.

[008] - DOM Tooltip 0.7.0
by Dan Allen (http://freshmeat.net/users/mojavelinux/)
Sat, Nov 13th 2004 00:19
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
About: DOM Tooltip allows developers to add customized tooltips to Web
pages. The tooltips are controlled through style class definitions and
respond to events such as "mouseover", and avoids possible collisions with
form elements such as select boxes and screen edges. While originally
designed to create context tooltips, it is also possible to create a wide
variety of dynamic layers, such as embedded windows, context menus, and
hidden blocks. Additional features include sticky tips, tooltip fading,
lifetime, relative positioning, class assignments, width adjustments,
mouse dragging, captions, directionality, offset adjustments, adjustable
activate/deactivate delay times, snapping to grid, fate adjustment (hide
or destroy), and references to created tips. It supports
Mozilla/Netscape6+, IE 5.5+, IE on Mac, Safari, Konqueror, and Opera 7.
Changes: Support was added for the Mac browsers, Safari and IE. Detection
of standards compliance mode now allows for screen offsets to be
calculated correctly regardless of DOCTYPE definition. Several
long-standing bugs and JavaScript errors were corrected.

[009] - drraw 2.1.1
by Christophe Kalt (http://freshmeat.net/users/kalt/)
Sat, Nov 13th 2004 22:26
About: drraw is a simple Web-based presentation front-end for RRDtool
that allows you to interactively build graphs of your own design. A graph
definition can be turned into a template which may be applied to many
Round Robin Database files. Unlike most other RRDtool front-ends, drraw
does not take care of collecting data and updating Round Robin database
files. Instead, it specializes in providing an easy means of displaying
collected data, making it a great complement to other RRDtool front-
ends.
Changes: This version only includes bugfixes.

[015] - fairly fast packet filter 1.3.3
by Willem de Bruijn (http://freshmeat.net/users/wdebruij/)
Sat, Nov 13th 2004 06:02
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux
About: The fairly fast packet filter (FFPF) is an approach to network
packet processing that adds many new features to existing filtering
solutions like BPF. It is designed for high speed by pushing
computationally intensive tasks to the kernel or even network processors
and by minimising packet copying. By providing both a richer programming
language and explicit extensibility, it is also considerably more
flexible than existing approaches. It provides a complete solution for
network monitoring that caters to all applications available today. Using
its extensibility, the language can even be used as a meta- filter to
"script" together filters from other approaches, such as BPF.
Changes: The last release lacked the kernelspace makefile. That file has
been reinserted from CVS. The build no longer fails on machines due to
"atomic.h" includes from userspace. This only happened on machines with
older (2.4) kernel headers.

Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search
Multimedia
About: libextractor is a library used to extract meta-data from files of
arbitrary type. It is designed to use helper-libraries to perform the
actual extraction, and to be trivially extendable by linking against
external extractors for additional file types. The goal is to provide
developers of file-sharing networks, file managers, and WWW-indexing bots
with a universal library to obtain meta-data about files. libextractor
contains a shell-command "extract" that, similar to the well-known "file"
command, can extract meta-data from a file and print the results to
stdout. Currently, it supports the formats HTML, PDF, PS, OLE2 (doc, xls,
ppt), StarOffice, OpenOffice, MAN, DVI, MP3 (ID3v1, ID3v2), OGG, WAV,
JPEG, GIF, PNG, TIFF, DEB, RPM, TAR(.GZ), ZIP, Real, QT, MPEG, RIFF (AVI),
ASF, and ELF. Various additional MIME types are detected. libextractor can
also be used to compute hash functions (SHA-1, MD5, ripemd160). A Java

[030] - MEEP 1.0.0
by Samuli Kärkkäinen (http://freshmeat.net/users/sak/)
Sat, Nov 13th 2004 05:59
System :: Archiving :: Backup
Utilities
About: MEEP takes a "versioned" disk to disk backup. "Versioned" means
that in each backup, unchanged files are hardlinks to the previous backup
version, hence typically at least 90% space is saved. Source directories
can be anything accepted by rsync, and the target must be a local
filesystem directory. The word MEEP is an abbreviation of Mobile
Enterprise Enabled Professional backup, none of which MEEP is.
Changes: This release removes the rsync option --whole-file. As meep has
been used by a handful of people for over a year and no one has reported
problems, it has been promoted to stable status.

[031] - Mini-XML 2.1
by Michael Sweet (http://freshmeat.net/users/easysw/)
Sat, Nov 13th 2004 13:28
Software Development :: Libraries
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
About: Mini-XML is a small XML parsing library that you can use to read
XML and XML-like data files in your application without requiring large
non-standard libraries. It only requires an ANSI C compatible compiler
(GCC works, as do most vendors' ANSI C compilers) and a "make" program. It
supports reading of UTF-8 and UTF-16 and writing of UTF-8 encoded XML
strings and files, and provides a hierarchical view of the file via a
linked-list tree structure of typed nodes and functions for managing,
traversing, indexing, and searching the tree.
Changes: This version adds support for custom data types and fixes a
number of small bugs.

by Jim Jozwiak (http://freshmeat.net/users/jozwiak/)
Sat, Nov 13th 2004 22:39
Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.
About: nut is nutrition software to record what you eat and analyze your
meals for nutrient composition. The database included is the USDA Nutrient
Database for Standard Reference, Release 17, which contains 6,839 foods and
128 nutrients. This database contains values for vitamins, minerals, fats,
calories, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, etc., and includes the essential
polyunsaturated fats, Omega-3 and Omega-6. Nutrient levels are expressed
as a percentage of the Daily Value, the familiar standard of food labeling
in the United States, but also can be fully customized. Foods can be added
from recipes or food labels, and nutrient intake can be graphed. The
program is completely menu-driven and there are no commands to learn.
Changes: This release contains a fix for wrong calories-per-gram values
when the program starts because it read a float as an integer from the
options file.

Communications :: Email
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: SMTarPit is a chrooted SMTP honeypot/tarpit. It attempts to
determine whether it is a person or a machine on the other (cracker) end
and adjusts itself accordingly.
Changes: This release uses a static table to make sure that the randomly
chosen server identity is consistent between calls - varying it could
lead to consistency checking in order to determine whether a site runs a
tarpit or a normal MTA. Also, it has the configuration option of whether
you want the detailed log or not. Not doing so means that you just have
the small log to go on. It also records the remote IP address in both the
quick and normal log files.

by Stephan Schmieder (http://freshmeat.net/users/ssc_/)
Sat, Nov 13th 2004 12:03
Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Filters
Internet
About: Spamresponder is a very simple and radical spam filter, combining
DNS validation with the challenge/response approach. It will go through
all mail messages in /var/mail/$USER, looking for specific "trusted"
strings in the header and body parts of the mail. It will delete and send
an automatic reply to messages which have no "trusted" strings inside
them. Those replies will include one of the "trusted" strings, so the
recipient just needs to reply to this confirmation message. The
MailFrom-address of an email containing a trusted string becomes a trusted
string itself.
Changes: DNS validation was implemented to minimize the amount of
confirmation messages, thus saving bandwidth and computing time. The FAQ,
README, and manpages were updated.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
About: Density provides a clean, powerful, object oriented environment
for developing Web applications in PHP. Designed to fill the gap between
large, powerful, tools like J2EE and lightweight tools that simply add a
little dynamic content to a page, it is geared towards writers of small
to medium sized Web applications.
Changes: This version added an embeddable interface that allows modules to
readily utilize functionality from other modules. An UploadedFile class
nicely abstracts the details of file uploads. Several method signatures
were changed to use references. The Administration module was redesigned
to allow for easier installation of modules using a packaging tool. The
Persister's class generation tool was reworked in far more modular
